Latest CyanogenMod 9 Nightlies Now Include Theme Engine Support – AOKP Gets In On The Action As Well

If you’re currently running a rooted device that happens to be blessed with CyanogenMod 9 support, you’ll be glad to know that the world famous custom ROM now includes theme engine support in their latest “nightlies.”

Just like we saw back in CM7 (their previous Gingerbread custom ROM), users can once again take their customizing to new heights with the option to change everything from the color and icons of their favorite ROM. Very unlike CM7 however, is the Theme Chooser app has been kicked to the curb in favor of the new “Themes” option, accessed straight from within the settings app.

Also added in the latest CM9 nightlies are custom lockscreen shortcuts (picture above) that can be tweaked to launch your favorite and most used apps. Oh — and if you’re an AOKP fan, one of the devs from that project let everyone know via his Twitter today that this new themeing engine will also be making its way into their ROMs as well.

I always felt ICS could use a little more pink in it. Definitely excited to give this a go. Here’s a quick video showing off this fresh new feature in action.

Feel Like An Avenger With These Super Hero Minimal Wallpapers [Download]

If you were some of the many who helped Marvel/Disney’s The Avengers rack up $200 million at the box office this past weekend, you’ve no doubt been bit by the super hero bug (or should I say — radio active spider?). Well, DeviantArt member Bloop might be able to scratch that itch with his super hero wallpapers perfect for your Android devices. While these walls are a little more tailored for use on a desktop (the faces are all off in the corners), when applying them to your Android device, cropping makes it easy to center, or off center, the images appropriately. Here’s the end result of Sentinel being applied to my Galaxy Nexus.

Pretty snazzy right? In the download pack, you’re sure to find at least a few of your favorite super heroes and even a few surprises thrown in there as well (read: The Tick). The minimal design and textured background go great on your ICS running or themed device and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

If you’re downloading the 47MB zip file (below) straight to your phone, just make sure you have a file manager app to unzip the file and view/apply the wallpaper of your choosing.

And since I get so many questions/comments about it. Here is the clock widget from my screenshot: BobClockD3

Samsung Galaxy S III passes through the Bluetooth SIG

Posted: 07 May 2012 02:38 PM PDT

Samsung’s latest flagship device, the Galaxy S III, has just passed through the Bluetooth SIG. The trip is a necessary step towards the eventual release of the device, which has been touted as “in time for summer” in more than one place. If “in time for summer” translates to later this month or early next, the timing is about right. We should note that we’re looking at the international version of the phone here and that the listing doesn’t reveal anything we didn’t already know. We should see a few more regulatory approvals before launch, all a part of the phone release cycle those of us mobile geeks obsess over.

Google ad reveals June launch for AT&T’s Sony Xperia Ion?

Posted: 07 May 2012 12:36 PM PDT

It looks like Google may have unleashed an ad campaign for the Sony Xperia ion prematurely, stealing AT&T’s thunder in the process. The handset, which was announced earlier this year at CES, has yet to be pegged with a release date by the carrier. The ad that has started to appear on Google when performing a search for the Xperia Ion wasn’t so coy. It reads “Come Exclusively to AT&T in June.” As always, we’ll wait for official confirmation, which should be coming soon from the sound of it.

NPD: Android now on 61 percent of US smartphones

Posted: 07 May 2012 12:12 PM PDT

The latest research from NPD Group is showing big gains for Android during the first quarter of 2012 at the expense of the mobile operating systems biggest rival. Android, which dipped to 49 percent towards the end of 2011, weathered an iOS surge brought about by the release of the iPhone 4S to reach a dominating 61 percent share of the market. Apple’s iOS saw a drop from a 49 percent share during Q4 2011 to hold less than a third of the market in Q1 2012 at 29 percent.

While various firms will give varying reports on the specific number of Android handset vs. iOS handset, the latest trend points toward Android continuing to grow its hold as the number one smartphone platform. Still, the quick rebound from Apple’s record breaking iPhone 4S sales is something most would not have anticipated.

Google found guilty of infringement in Oracle suit, but questions remain

Posted: 07 May 2012 11:45 AM PDT

It looks like a minor snag in deliberations this morning wasn’t enough to keep a jury from reaching a decision in the first leg of Oracle’s trial against Google, and things aren’t so rosy for the tech giant behind Android. A ruling of guilty was passed down in regards to allegations of infringement on Oracle’s Java API. Still, there was no decision on whether the infringement fell under the rules of fair use or not.

While the verdict seems damning for Google, things aren’t all that bad. Based on the jury’s inability to conclude unanimously on all questions asked of them, Google is moving for a mistrial. The outcome looks to be several more months of courtroom hijinks before the true implications of any decision will be known, and in all likelihood things will move towards a tidy (and potentially pricy) out of court settlement between the two parties.

Juror accused of discussing trial temporarily halts Oracle v. Google deliberations

Posted: 07 May 2012 11:21 AM PDT

Today information came to light that a jury serving in the Oracle vs. Google trial may have discussed the case outside of the courtroom over the weekend, a big no no that caused deliberations to be suspended temporarily after signs pointed to a conclusion coming this week. The juror made mention today of discussions with her husband over the weekend involving patent law. A concerned member of the jury brought the issue to the presiding judge’s attention who in turn spoke to the accused juror. It was originally believed that the juror’s husband may have been an attorney but she confirmed to the judge that this was not the case.

In fact, the husband was only marginally schooled in patents based on the filing of a few of his own, and the information he gave his wife in regards to patent law over the weekend was apparently false. Despite the discussions between the juror and her husband, she told the judge that she had already reached a decision on the case last week.

After clarification the remaining jurors concluded that the snafu would not have an effect on their ability to reach a verdict and returned to deliberations. A decision is expected to be reached as soon as later today.

Best Buy’s off-contract price for the EVO 4G LTE? You’d have to be in the top 1 percentile to justify it [Humor]

Posted: 07 May 2012 08:43 AM PDT

Yikes. I mean, the phone looks great and all, but jeez. There are a lot more things I can think of to spend $100,000 on, like creating the world’s biggest Ice Cream cone or taking a lifetime of yoga classes. This, however, is just ludicrous. [Best Buy, thanks Felecity!]

May 18th looking likely for EVO 4G LTE arrival

Posted: 07 May 2012 08:36 AM PDT

Without formally announcing it, Sprint’s confirmed that the EVO 4G LTE should be arriving right around the previously rumored May 18th date. Those who took the time to preorder the device this morning were met with messages that devices would begin shipping May 15th, and delivery to their doorstep would occur in 1-3 business days.

Sprint preorderers tend to receive devices earlier than the phone is due, so those first two days beyond May 15th could probably be disregarded and May 18th should be the day that everyone will be able to just walk into a store and buy it. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

HTC announces HTC One V to come to US carriers this summer

Posted: 07 May 2012 08:15 AM PDT

Looks like HTC have announced that the One V is coming to America, as well. They’re apparently bringing the device to several US carriers and/or retailers this summer, but going beyond that leaves us with no clue in terms of specifics. The fact that they should be showing it at CTIA shows that they’re confident enough that it’s coming, though, so we’ll just elect to take their word for it.

The HTC One V isn’t poised to be the most impressive out of the three, but it still gives a lot of high-end smartphones a run for their money. With a 4 inch display and an S4 processor, I find it difficult to shove this one into the “entry-level” category even though it sits on the low end of the “One” spectrum. Circle back with us to see what we should be expecting stateside as we go hands-on. [Engadget]

Amazon offering Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus for $150

Posted: 07 May 2012 08:02 AM PDT

Anyone waiting on a solid chance to upgrade to the Sprint Galaxy Nexus should look Amazon’s way. They’re offering the phone $50 cheaper than it’s on-contract MSRP, making it $150 for any new customer or any customer upgrading. The discount is an eye-popper, but who doesn’t love the chance to save as much money as they can? It can help ease the pain of any activation fees you might incur, and at least you get free two-day shipping on top of that. If all of this sounds like something you don’t want to pass up, head to Amazon.

HTC One X source code now available (unless you’re with AT&T)

Posted: 07 May 2012 07:42 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

Developers can now be a bit more flexible when they create beautiful Sense 4.0-based ROMs for the HTC One X as the device’s source code has been made available for download. Over 2 dozen carriers/regions are supported for this code drop, but AT&T – the lone US carrier offering the device right now – is nowhere to be seen. We don’t like jumping to conclusions, but considering AT&T won’t allow you to unlock your bootloader on this phone it’s probably not a good idea to get excited for source code. If you develop for any of the religions listed at the source link: have it it! [via HTCDev]
