HTC One V to come to several US carriers this summer

Posted: 08 May 2012 02:44 AM PDT

htc-one-v

After the HTC One X and HTC One S, the last of the One series, HTC One V, has finally received a release window in the US. Aiming to grab a good slice of the low to mid-end range smartphone market in the US, HTC announced today that the One V will be launched this summer at "a variety of US partners."

Despite packing the least exciting set of specs, the One V bears the hallmarks of HTC's superfine build quality, much like the other One phones. The phone's aluminum unibody is complemented by a 3.7-inch display protected by scratch-resistant reinforced glass, a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon S3 processor, a microSD card slot, and 1,500mAh battery.

The same great shooter found on the more expensive members of the One series can be found on the HTC One V, though it's been scaled-down to a 5MP, f/2.0, back-illuminated sensor. Along with the omnipresent Beats Audio enhancement software, owners of the HTC One V get up to 25GB of Dropbox storage. And let's not forget that the phone ships with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4. Some of the phone's downsides include its paltry 512MB of RAM, a smallish 4GB of internal storage, and the lack of a compass sensor.

While HTC hasn't mentioned any specific pricing for the One V in the US, judging from how much the phone is selling for in other countries, we can probably expect it to retail for about $300 with no contract, which is also the rumored price for the HTC One V in Canada.

It does appear that the phone is heading towards the prepaid path, because soon after its introduction at Mobile World Congress in February, the names of budget carriers like Metro PCS, Virgin Mobile, and US Cellular have been thrown around as HTC's partners in the US. The list is yet to be confirmed by the Taiwanese manufacturer and there's a solid chance it will land on bigger carriers as well.

So, do you think the HTC One V is a keeper?

Verizon employees get their exclusive red DROID RAZR MAXX

Posted: 08 May 2012 02:01 AM PDT

moto-razr-maxx

From time to time, Verizon employees are offered a special deal, whether it’s cool insider information on future phones or early releases ahead of the public market. Either way, they are usually informed what is going on in Verizon territory. Well the folks that work at Big Red now have the chance to obtain a phone which will not be available to the public at all. Specifically, Verizon employees are able to purchase a "Limited Edition" red DROID RAZR MAXX.

The DROID RAZR MAXX is definitely a phone to remember, one that stands out of the crowd of juice-thirsty 4G LTE phones. I mean, no other phone in its generation comes even close to the RAZR MAXX’ amazing 21.5 hours of talk time. And all that power is delivered without sacrificing the phone’s slim figure.

Back to the Verizon-only MAXX, the phone sports a black and red color scheme, with red accents on the kevlar back and the power button on the side. Not very different from the “original” MAXX, but, after all, it does say "Limited Edition" on the back. So how could you go wrong?

Droid Life reports that the exclusive devices have began arriving to the employees who ordered them ($199 and $99 for the 32GB or 16GB). What is unfortunate is that the general public can not grab these babies, as they are employee exclusive. However, don't fret about it, because there have already been cases of employee's offering their black and red phones on EBay or Craigslist, even before he or she received the device. I am sure that the red edition will be seen on eBay soon. Just don't expect it to sell at a regular price.

So what do you think about this red RAZR MAXX? Will you try to snatch one off on eBay? Do you think it should have been available to the public? I would love to hear your comments.

Gameloft announces Men in Black 3 and Asphalt 7: Heat, coming soon

Posted: 08 May 2012 01:28 AM PDT

If you had plans for any kind of outdoors activity over the following weeks or so, you should either cancel them entirely or make sure you're always near a power source to plug in your mobile device. You will certainly need more "juice" than usual, because Gameloft is preparing to hit us with three exciting new titles.

We have already talked extensively about N.O.V.A. 3 and how cool the first few trailers look, but the third iteration of the successful action game franchise will not come solo. Asphalt 7: Heat and Men in Black 3 will also be released by Gameloft very soon, and both games are already on my to-download list.

Asphalt 7: Heat

While I don't think that the Asphalt game franchise needs any kind of introduction, let's mention that the first title of the series dates from way back in 2004. Ever since, Gameloft has been spoiling us with a new edition every year, and, like a good wine, the franchise has become better and better in time. The first edition to have an Android version was Asphalt 5, while Asphalt 6: Adrenaline is the latest title to hit the market.

The seventh episode of the racing saga was revealed during the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S3 last week in London. Although we have pretty much no official information about the game, it's safe to assume that we will see Asphalt 7: Heat released in a matter of weeks.

Most likely, Asphalt 7 will  not be a free title, and it could cost as much as $5.99. It's true, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline goes for just $0.99 in Google Play right now, but that’s after several discounts. Also, given the fact that we saw the game at the S3 unveiling, we suspect it might be pre-installed on Sammy's new flagship device or be available exclusively for the S3, for a while.

Men in Black 3

I don't know about you, but I had so much fun watching the first MIB movies years ago that I am willing to give the series' (hopefully) final episode a whirl. That’s despite the fact that I'm not sold by the things I've heard about it – Tommy Lee Jones comes back in a smaller role and the movie's trailer hasn't been that funny, in all honesty.

We're not here to talk about the movie, though, because a "Men in Black 3" video game will hit Android on May 25. Gameloft has already released a teaser trailer, which once again doesn't look great. There are only a couple of seconds of in-game "action" shown in the clip, and it's pretty obvious that MIB 3 will be a more basic game, lacking stunning visuals or action packed gameplay.

On the other hand, the game will be released for free, so I am willing to give it a chance after all. The black suits are coming (again) and, hopefully, the movie and the game won't make us forget about all the fun we’ve had watching MIB and MIB 2.

Check out the MIB 3 for Android teaser trailer below and tell us if you think the game will be any good! Also, what are your thoughts on the upcoming release of Asphalt 7: Heat? How do you think it will measure up against its very popular predecessors?

Diagnosis – System Information: Android app for monitoring your phone system

Posted: 08 May 2012 01:00 AM PDT

The more powerful the device, the more tasks it’s capable of. Unfortunately, that also means that it’s more vulnerable to slowing down. With too many apps packed into a limited space, any Android device, no matter how powerful, can suffer performance issues. After all, it’s hard to resist running a million things at once when you fee like your device can handle anything you throw at it. When you start feeling your device slowing down, you’ll need to cut back on how many apps you’re running but with no idea which one in particular is eating up all your speed.

Since Android is all about customizability and what the Android development community wants is what the Android development community gets, it’s now possible to stay on top of your Android device’s performance. Introducing Diagnosis – System Information, an app that allows you to get into the nitty-gritty of your device’s processes.

Basically an Android version of the Windows’ Task Manager, Diagnosis makes sure that you don’t need to suspend any of your apps to check on how your device is performing. You can check how much CPU resources a certain app is using, as well as if the battery is getting too hot. You can even check what apps are running in the background or if the lag you’re experiencing might have been caused by another app.

Diagnosis gives you the option to keep information displayed at all times, even while you’re using other apps. When Diagnosis is turned on, small customizable text is shown on the screen and provides you the information that you need. You can choose to display a variety of information, such as CPU use, memory, active apps, and CPU speed.

Maybe you want to see a list of applications using anything between 40% to 70% of your CPU. You can tailor the information display to show you the information that matters. Need help figuring things out? Head on over to the Settings > About menu to access Diagnosis’ extensive help file.

Diagnosis’ free version gives you the choice of 33 general information items. If you still want to know more about your Android device, purchasing Diagnosis Pro – Unlocker will give you 33 bits of information that are far more specific in nature.

For Diagnosis to function at its best, you’ll need to grant it a few permissions. “Storage” is required to write the database to the SD card rather than letting it clog up internal memory. “System Tools” is needed to show the information on top of the screen and to keep it displayed while loading data. To be able to send anonymous bug reports and display network latency, you’ll also need to give “Internet” permission. There are a few more permissions that Diagnosis needs and they’re explained in detail on the Google Play Store page.

Diagnosis is free and doesn’t contain any ads. Even if you may not foresee yourself utilizing this app everyday, it’s comforting to know that you can monitor your processes easily and at any time you need to. Download Diagnosis from the Google Play Store today.

Another N.O.V.A. 3 trailer pops up, the game looks outstanding!

Posted: 07 May 2012 10:57 AM PDT

We've pretty much suspected that Gameloft will be doing everything possible to promote the heck out of its upcoming N.O.V.A. 3 action game, but we're still surprised to see how aggressive their advertising campaign has been over the past few weeks.

First, there was a teaser trailer that didn't allow us to catch more than a short sneak peek of the future game. Less than a week ago, a more “conventional” trailer came out, followed shortly after by a multiplayer trailer. Both of the videos looked great and it became obvious that the game's launch would be scheduled by the end of May.

And just when we started thinking that Gameloft would cool things down a bit, a new trailer came out, one that looks even more spectacular than the previous two. The "producer trailer" features Arnaud Bonnard, one of N.O.V.A. 3's executive producers, walking us through a 90 second clip with real gameplay images.

Bonnard sums up the visual improvements and upgrades N.O.V.A. 3 brings to the table, in comparison with the second iteration of the game franchise. I don't want to spoil the fun of watching the video, but you will get a taste of what Bonnard calls "the woo effect" of the game.

New distortion effects, shadows, dynamic lighting, and motion blurs will probably make N.O.V.A 3 one of the most realistic mobile video games ever. The "movie-like depth of field" should allow you to get in touch with your character on a deeper level than ever. The scenery in the trailer looks breathtaking, which could be a problem for some users that might end up admiring the surroundings and forget about their opponents.

There's still no release date confirmed for Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance 3, but it's pretty obvious that we will be able to play the game in just a few short weeks. As far as pricing goes, we don’t have anything official to report either, but most rumors point towards a $6.99 retail price, both for the Android and for the iOS version of N.O.V.A. 3.

I already told you a couple of weeks back that I will be one of the first to purchase N.O.V.A. 3 for my Android device, as I am a longstanding fan of the franchise. How about you? Has Gameloft managed to lure you in with their aggressive marketing campaign?

If you happened to miss the first trailers, I took the liberty to embed the three videos below, so watch, enjoy and let us know what you think!

Samsung Galaxy S3 shipping early in the Philippines?

Posted: 07 May 2012 10:47 AM PDT

Galaxy-S3 official

Aside from the confirmed European release date of the Samsung Galaxy S3, Sammy hasn't set a specific release date for the flagship phone in other regions. At times like these we have to crank up our efforts to dig up more information from the local reps in each country with some help from our friends.

Now, the good news. If you live in the Philippines, there's a good chance you will be one of the first in the area to play with the Samsung Galaxy S3. Techpinas, a local gadget blog, has apparently received word from the officials at Samsung Mobile Philippines concerning the expected release date of the Samsung Galaxy S3 in the country. According to the insider, the Galaxy S3 will be launched in the Philippines by the last week of May. Yes, this very month. If accurate, this puts the Philippines launch ahead of the supposed June launch date slated for some other regions.  The date has also been reported and confirmed by several other tech blogs in the country.

Although the insider couldn't share any price details about the Samsung Galaxy S3, the phone is expected to be sold for PHP 30,000 or about US$700. It is at the lower range of our own predictions, but apparently that's the price that the Samsung Galaxy S2 debuted for last year in the Philippines. One would assume that the price for a 4.8-inch super phone would be different from a 4.3-inch one though.

In case you're wondering how your country fares relative to others, here are our reports on Samsung Galaxy S3's expected release date in Europe, US, Canada, India, and Southeast Asia. Australia, apparently, won’t get any early love from Samsung. Don't forget to share the joy with our readers if you do get the Samsung Galaxy S3 early.

Facebook Messenger app gets read receipts and locations features; ignoring people just got harder

Posted: 07 May 2012 10:40 AM PDT

For those that can't resist the lure of profile hopping on Facebook, there's a stand-alone Facebook Messenger app that still allows you to engage in conversation with your Facebook friends, without the usual distractions. In a bid to become the messaging platform of choice, Facebook has updated its Messenger app for both Android and iOS, bringing them closer to competing platforms, in terms of looks and functionality.

The updated mobile Messenger application now comes with a "read receipts" feature, which lets you see whether the messages you send to your friends have been read or not. Since it works both ways, this feature may lead to that awkward moment when you can no longer lie about not receiving or reading messages from people you're actively ignoring. In addition to the read receipts, there's now a real-time typing indicator showing the name of the person who is typing to you.

Next, Facebook has updated the Messenger app so that it shows your location to your friends, making use of the rather specific GPS coordinates that most modern smartphones can give out. You'll see the place from where the messages you received were sent right on the main screen.

These are two handy features for stalkers, but might prove downright creepy for others. Although you can turn off the location feature on the updated Facebook Messenger app, which is especially useful for people who want to maintain some privacy, the message receipt feature can't be turned off at all.  Hide all you want from your friends, but they’ll still see if you've read their messages or not.

Since the update hasn't made its way to the main Facebook app yet, you can use that one instead for the time being. But Facebook plans to roll out the new changes to the main app in the near future as well.
