Rogers Samsung Galaxy S II LTE ICS update now available through Kies

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 04:34 PM PDT

Rogers Samsung Galaxy S II LTE

As we're all looking toward the Samsung Galaxy S III, Rogers in Canada has managed to slip out the Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich update to the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE available on their network. Sadly, there is no OTA update to be found here though meaning, you'll have to fire up Kies on your computer to get the party started but overall that's a minor issue. Need to know the process for updating via Kies? No worries, head on over to the Samsung site using the link below. You'll see the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE SGH-I727R (Android 4.0.3) PDF available for download.

HTC gets official with ICS for the Rezound, no word on an OTA just yet

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 04:20 PM PDT

Rezound

HTC has posted the official news that ICS is available for the Rezound, but we can't find anyone who has found it yet. Version 3.14.605.10 710RD should be hitting devices shortly according to HTC and will update devices running the stock firmware to Ice Cream Sandwich, and is installed like any other OTA update through the settings menu.

It's worth noting that this is the same build as the last leak, and one that's been kicking around from HTC in RUU form for those who don't want to wait for an OTA. That's where the Rezound forums come into play, where folks live and breathe this sort of thing and can point you in the right direction for any assistance you might need. In any case, we'll update when we hear news that it's pushing out over-the-air.

Stitcher Radio for Android updated with new features, bug fixes

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 04:09 PM PDT

Stitcher

Stitcher Radio has been serving up podcasts and internet radio for quite some time now on Android but it's been a while since the app was last updated with a new subset of features. Apparently, it was all for good reason as there is a new update available right now that shows off some new features and a slightly redesigned user interface:

  • Smart Station – Never be in the dark about which shows and programs you should be listening to. An industry first for talk radio, the Stitcher Smart Station makes recommendations based on your listening activity. By culling your listening history, favorite shows and thumbs up, the Smart Station recommends shows you’re most likely to enjoy.
  • Lock Screen Album Art – Make your listening experience more visual. See the currently playing show on your phone’s lock screen while you’re listening to Stitcher.
  • Sleep Timer – Set Stitcher to automatically stop playing after you nod off. With Stitcher’s most requested feature, you can set specific sleep settings to have your shows automatically stop. Whether you’re setting it for sleep or for your regular morning commute, your Stitcher app is more in-tune with your listening habits.
  • Easier Sharing on Twitter – Keep the sharing alive. With pre-populated show descriptions and sources, Stitcher is now making it easier and ever to share your favorite shows.

The Smart Station feature is certainly my favorite addition to the app. I find that if I go looking for podcasts on my own, I never end up listening to any. Instead, just look around until I give up. With Smart Station, it shows me stuff I may be interested in based on what I am listening to so there is more likelihood that once I'm done listening to the Android Central podcast on Stitcher I can then move onto something else closely related and just as interesting.

Sprint says demand outweighs inventory for the Galaxy S III, working with Samsung on a delivery schedule

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 02:02 PM PDT

Sprint Galaxy S III

Sprint just given us word with news about the Galaxy S III launch. It pretty much mirrors their posting on the matter yesterday, and the short version is that they just won't have enough handsets to go around.

Due to overwhelming demand for Galaxy S III worldwide, Samsung has informed us they will not be able to deliver enough inventory of Galaxy S III for Sprint to begin selling the device on June 21. We are working closely with Samsung on a delivery schedule to support our launch.

We have begun shipping pre-orders for the 16GB version of Samsung Galaxy S III and anticipate they will be delivered by June 21. We hope to begin shipping pre-orders for the 32GB version next week as we receive inventory. Customers can check the status of their pre-order at www.sprint.com/myorder.

Having people buying your product as fast as you can produce it is a problem every company would like to have, but that doesn't ease the sting for those with money in hand waiting for the new hotness. Now that Sprint and AT&T (and T-Mobile unofficially) have pushed back the release date, it looks like the US will face the same shortage that Canada will. Sprint just got Samsunged.

T-Mobile's Galaxy S III to cost $arm.leg

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 01:26 PM PDT

ZOMG that's expensive!

Pricing for the T-Mobile Galaxy S III has been leaked out, and it matches pretty well with previous rumors (and fears) -- expensive. The 16 GB version is shown above (we're almost afraid to see a 32 GB version) and it's going to cost either $230 bucks up front and $20 monthly on the Value Plan, or $280 after a $50 mail-in rebate on the Classic Plan. If you're willing to extend your equipment-free contract, you can snag it for $450 after rebate with an early upgrade.

If all those plans confuse the hell out of you (it's OK, they confuse everyone), you can just buy it outright for $630. That's a lot of folding money for a phone that is carrier locked and possibly won't have world-wide 3G bands. Sometimes, the best things in life are not always free.

Android tops LGBT 'buzz list' in the U.S.

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 01:14 PM PDT

Android Pride tee

Android has been chosen as the "best perceived brand" among the LGBT community in the latest BrandIndex rankings. This is the first year Android has made the list, and it edged out the iPhone by just a couple points. The folks at BrandIndex tallied up scores for over 1,100 brands, and asked “If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?” The negative was subtracted from the positive, and after filtering results for those who identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender, Android got a score of 38.2.

We're not exactly sure what this means, except that it's pretty fabulous, and we know Google and the guys and gals on the Android team support all folks without caring about who or how they love. And that's the way it should be.

Light Flow LED Control v3.0 brings new user interface and notification volume controls

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 11:49 AM PDT

Light Flow

Looking to gain better control of your LED notifications? If so, Rage Consulting has now released the latest update to their popular Light Flow LED control app. We reviewed it not all that long ago but v3.0 brings some welcomed changes to the mix including a new user interface because honestly, the old one was rather bland. In addition to the new UI, you can now also adjust notification volumes individually so you'll no longer have to deal with all notifications set at the same volume. Those are just two of the changes within. The full change log is rather lengthy and contains plenty of bug fixes, app additions and more:

  • Volume controls - each notification can be set with its own volume (either fixed or relative to the standard notification volume)
  • Notifications can be configured to play a sound even when the phone is in silent mode (for those very important notifications)
  • ICS devices can have a different notification volume set to the ringtone volume.
  • Widgets - 2 styles of basic widget for viewing and resetting notifications.
  • New custom color picker with HEX input available
  • New camera flash method selector with additional support for some Motorola phones
  • New Labs section: currently with Instant Alert to vibrate the phone when picked up for important messages
  • Added Chinese language
  • Control sleep time via near field communications - toggle by tapping a NFC tag

There are two versions of Light Flow available, lite and full. The lite version is available as a free download but only offers limited features while the full version costing $1.99 opens up the full functionality. Important to note, Light Flow will not work on all devices so best to give the lite version a go first to ensure compatibility.

Microsoft rolls its own Wallet solution for Windows Phone, does Google Wallet one better

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 09:46 AM PDT

Microsoft Wallet

One digital wallet to rule them all? Not so much, apparently. Microsoft today at its Windows Phone Summit in San Francisco announced Windows Phone Wallet, which appears to take the best of Google Wallet and Apple's new Passbook and roll it into a single app.

Oh, and it throws in PayPal for good measure.  Wowzers.

Just like Google Wallet, Windows Phone Wallet uses NFC for the transaction. But Microsoft's solution appears to dive deeper than just a basic way of linking your credit card to your phone. It'll also serve as a direct link for in-app purchasing and store personal information, all on the phone. Again, the best of both worlds.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: Google's got to get rid of this Sprint exclusivity for Google Wallet, pronto.

AT&T Galaxy S III shipping date slips a week

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 09:05 AM PDT

AT&T Galaxy S III

Just a quick heads up that while we're waiting on official word from AT&T regarding actual availability of its Galaxy S III (you'll recall that Sprint and possibly T-Mobile have pushed things back a little), do note that the arrival date for preordering devices is now showing "on or before June 28" instead of June 21. (It's unknown whether that affects previously preordered devices, or new ones. We'll update you here when we find out.)

We'll likely be told any change is due to the unprecedented popularity of the phone. Or, if you're like us and would really like to give someone some money for a phone or two, you'll start to wonder what the holdup is, and whether it links back to previous production problems.

Anyway, looks like we'll be waiting an extra week on AT&T.

Slightly redesigned Android launcher sneaks out in screenshot from Google

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 08:58 AM PDT

Android Central

Eagle-eyed Google Play Store-goers will have noticed something mildly interesting in this screenshot from the Google IO 2012 Android app listing. It's the stock Android 4.x launcher, but what's that at the top? A redesigned Google Search bar? Sure looks like it. It's a transparent square in Google's screenshot, as opposed to the white-bordered dealie that we know from the Galaxy Nexus.

To be clear, this isn't merely a redesigned widget -- in ICS, the Google search bar is part of the launcher itself, meaning that the change must also be of the launcher. Sure, it'd be easy to mock up this sort of image using a custom launcher, or even Photoshop, but remember this is a screenshot from Google, from an official Google app listing.

This naturally leads to some speculation that the image comes from a future version of Android, perhaps Jelly Bean. And when you consider the image's source and subject matter, it's easy to connect the dots and conclude that we might see a new version of Android (albeit one with only minor visual changes) at next week's Google IO conference in San Francisco. There's already been plenty of speculation that we'll see Jelly Bean next week, and that it'll be Android 4.1.

Also of interest, is the time in this pic -- 25:10. Obviously that's not a real time. Some have speculated it's a reference to a date -- October 25 -- but we don't think it's likely that Google would tease an announcement so far out.

So perhaps this is our first look at the next version of Android, or maybe Google's just trolling the blogosphere. If you've got any theories, let us know what you think down in the comments.

Samsung Galaxy S III flip case

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 08:44 AM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S III flip case

Here's a quick look at Samsung's devilishly simple flip case for the Galaxy S III. Some of you might remember this guy from the Galaxy Note as well, and the premise remains the same. You get a pretty slick way of protecting the phone's display while adding very little bulk to the device.

That's achieved by having the cover attached to a replacement battery door via a hinge made of the same material. The inside is suede-like, and the exterior of the cover is done in a textured sort of vinyl or plastic. It folds over the display and lays nearly flat (or, more likely, will lay nearly flat after a little more time in our pockets), covering the screen and the buttons below it. There's a cutout for the earpiece, so you can close the cover while on a call, which will save you from those unsightly oil slicks. (On the other hand, we're not sure what it'll do for the cover itself. Who wants to walk around with a yellow phone?)

The battery door part of the flip case is nearly identical to what came with your phone. If you've got a carrier-branded phone in the U.S., you'll lose that logo, though, and have Samsung's instead. (That'll be a feature for a number of you, we imagine.)

The whole thing adds just a tiny bit of thickness to the phone, which at 8.6 mm maybe could stand to eat a sammich anyway. We've got a slew of pics and some hands-on video after the break.

Amazon invites developers to ready their apps for international expansion

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 08:09 AM PDT

Amazon

Amazon announced this morning that they are close to expanding their Appstore for Android to international locations and are inviting developers to participate using the Amazon Mobile App Distribution Portal. Countries that will be included are the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. The Appstore will role out to these places 'later this summer'.

If you're a developer, you can select specific countries that you want to include and set the price. If you're already a part of the distribution program, your app will automatically be submitted to the new markets. Amazon will not require multiple languages, but highly encourages the use of them.

Amazon also announced two changes to the distribution agreement:

  • Beginning July 1, developers will earn 70% of list price for each paid app sale. This differs from the previous agreement which stated that the income would be either 70% of the app's sales price or 20% of the list price.
  • Developers will now control which apps are made available to purchase and to which markets they go on sale to.

It's always good to see more markets being served by the Amazon Appstore and a simplification of developer agreements.

Waze unveils version 3.2, with waypoints, voice control, and real-time gas pricing

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 07:15 AM PDT

Waze

Waze has taken the wraps off the latest version of their über-popular social navigation app, and there's some pretty cool new features thrown into the mix. For starters, you can now find the things you're looking for along the route your traveling with the new waypoints feature, where you can search for gas stations (more on that in a minute), parking, auto repair and more that are on your way. Then there's the addition of full voice control for reporting incidents to the rest of the community for Android phones, and an inbox for updates from the Waze community. The big news is the real-time gas search, which allows you to say a couple of bucks when you're at the pumps. In addition, Waze has partnered with Kum & Go, Hess, Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores (BP and Exxon stations) and Vintners Distributers (Shell) locations to bring in-app discounts on gas to users. As outrageous as gas prices are getting, this is something everyone should try.

Of course everything else you love (or heard about everyone else loving if you haven't tried Waze yet) is still there -- real-time traffic, social integration, speed trap reports, and fun. The best part is that it's all free!

Hit the break for a short video, a handful of app screenshots, and Waze's press release

Major Swype beta update released with syncable dictionary, personalized prediction

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 06:17 AM PDT

Android Central

Swype developer Nuance has announced -- and released -- a major update to the beta version of the popular Android keyboard. The new Swype beta, which is available to download now from the official site, adds in several new abilities designed to make word prediction more accurate. Among these is a feature more commonly associated with rival SwiftKey -- personalized prediction based on social networking accounts, SMS and email.

The devs have also added in the ability to sync your personal dictionary across multiple devices, and download new languages from within the app. On top of that, a more intelligent prediction engine is promised, based on Nuance's XT9 tech, which the developers say will make Swype smarter based on historical usage. Dragn dictation is also included, if you prefer talking to typing.

All in all, this looks like a worthy update to one of the most popular Android keyboards, so if you're a fan of Swype, you'll definitely want to check it out. The new version of Swype is available now over at the source link for English and Spanish users.

We've got the presser after the break.

Google Developers Live aims to bring I/O to developers all year round

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 03:20 AM PDT

Android Central

Naturally, excitement is building as we get ever nearer to Google I/O 12. Alongside the release of the new Google I/O 12 Android application, Google has kicked off the Google Developers Live page over on the Google Developers site. Say Google; "we want to bring you knowledge, tools, and people from the Google Developers community, all year round–not just three days in June."

Google already publishes regular video sessions, such as Office Hours on YouTube, but keeping track of what's out there and when it's available can be challenging. Google Developers Live aims to bring all that content under one roof effectively, and provide an easy portal complete with calendar, to find the sessions that interest you.

And, to kick-start the I/O all year round message, the first, starter-level sessions on various topics to prepare eager developers for next weeks more advanced material.

Motorola and Alitalia pair up, Xoom 2 tablets to appear on board

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 02:48 AM PDT

Motorola Xoom 2 with Alitalia

Motorola Mobility has announced a partnership with Italian airline, Alitalia, that will see the Motorola Xoom 2 start to appear on board Alitalia flights. The on-board crew will have access to the tablets with a custom manifest application built in, on which they can view detailed information about passengers, their meal requests, travel history and any previous 'inconvieniences' -- whatever they might be. The benefit to staff is the ability to have real-time information at their finger tips, as well as easy access to the aircrafts manuals.

Additionally, the Xoom 2 will be introduced into Business and Magnifica class cabins, initially only a selection of mid and long-range flights to Russia and the Middle East that don't currently carry an in-flight entertainment service. Movies, games, magazines, music will all be pre-loaded for passengers to take advantage of.

Back on the ground, the tablets will also start to appear in 10 Alitalia lounges as well. The full presser can be found after the break along with a short, and Italian, promotional video

Some Sprint Galaxy S IIIs seem to be shipping out tonight

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 10:07 PM PDT

Sprint

Sprint was serious when they said they would still be shipping out pre-orders of the 16GB versions of the Galaxy S III on time. Even though there's some sort of delay in the chain, users in the Sprint GSIII forums are getting their shipping notifications, much like RawisTheGameHhH's who you see above.

The timing is perfect, you can read both our Sprint GSIII review as well as Alex's primer on the new Touchwiz while you're waiting and refreshing the UPS tracking number. Afterwards, be sure to dive in the forums feet first -- half the fun of having a new Android phone is finding ways to fiddle around with it, and there's some pros in there who think outside the box. Now hurry UPS trucks!

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III review

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 09:01 PM PDT

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III

Behold, the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III!

That's all we need to write, right? The Galaxy S III really doesn't need too much preamble at this point, having been released overseas for several weeks now. We covered the launch event in London. It's a big, sleek, powerful phone. And it's coming to AT&T this week. And it's doing so in exactly the same form factor as we see abroad.

It's not quite that simple, of course. While it looks exactly the same on the outside (and on the software side as well) AT&T -- like the other U.S. carriers and a few in Canada -- has a slightly different version under the hood. And this is AT&T we're talking about, so we'd better open things up to make sure nobody's hidden anything up their sleeve.

Ready for some more Galaxy S III goodness? Dive on in for our AT&T Galaxy S III mini-review.
