Samsung Galaxy S III review

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 02:12 PM PDT

What we liked: The Samsung Galaxy S III is heavy on hardware, but even heavier on experience. The leading-edge specs easily put it at the top of the Android mountain, however its the personal touches that will see this phone selling like hotcakes.

Room for improvement: A little slipperier than we'd like, the phone backside is also quick to pick up smudges.  And, even though it's more narrow than other large display handsets, it's still not easy to operate with one hand. Some of the front-facing camera features could be more accurate.

Review at a glance: Putting the fanboy-imposed expectations aside and looking at the phone from a general consumer standpoint, the Galaxy S III is an all-around winner.  The Android 4.0 experience only gets better with Samsung's custom features.  Sharing is the name of the game here and mobile users will be sharing their love of the Galaxy S III this summer

Before we go any further

As one of the most anticipated samrtphones of all time, the Galaxy S III has a lot to live up to.  In case you missed it, rumors and speculation were rampant this spring over what hardware was going to be for Samsung's flagship device.  When it was announced, it featured pretty much all of the upper-tier stuff we expected, and the masses were sufficiently pleased.  Yet, despite its top of the line hardware, all the dual-core this, 2GB that, and other hardware won't be what gets people chatting.  For the first time since the G1, it's what this phone does that makes me show it off.

I love to take review phones out in the wild to see what friends and family say about them and the Galaxy S III was no different.  Would people see its white design and massive screen and ask me about it? Yes.  Would I end up talking about its 2GB RAM and 8-megapixel camera?  Only to show off burst mode, best shot, and other cool tricks.  It's not that the hardware was embarrassing or second-rate, it's just that's not what average users care about.  Because of that, this review will largely focus on the "stuff" that Samsung did with this phone that separates it from other higher end smartphones.

A bit on the hardware

What's not to love here?  The dual-core 1.5GHz CPU is quicker than anything your typical consumer needs and it shines when doing your mundane stuff like downloading apps, playing games, checking calendar, and playing with media.  Paired with 2GB RAM, the Galaxy S III is ultra-fast and more than able to handle whatever you throw it at.

The 4.8-inch 1280x720 display is downright gorgeous and will grab the attention of anyone within range.  Surrounded by its white shell, the handset looks clean, classy, and sophisticated. The screen is is protected by Gorilla Glass so I know it's going to handle pockets and purses just fine.  We sincerely missed the Gorilla Glass tech on the Galaxy Nexus and were only too pleased to learn it made the trip.

Colors are more natural than in previous Super AMOLED models and the clarity cannot be overstated.  Sure, there's IPS stuff out there on other models but you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn't appreciate the Galaxy S III display.

Even with its 2100mAh battery inside, the Galaxy S III feels light, yet never cheap.  Yes, you can bend that battery cover in all sorts of taco shapes, but it's pretty strong and resilient stuff.  Feeling like a shinier, more expensive version of last year's Galaxy S II, the handset is taller and slimmer than its predecessor.  Speaking of  battery, we've been pleasantly surprised at how well it holds up over the course of a day. It's not a Droid Razr Maxx, but we expected less time with the 4.8-inch display and all the goofing around.  Off the charger, we were able to go all day long, five days straight.  The first two days were weekend and the times we really installed our apps, took a chunk of photos and video, and more.  A normal workday?  Should be more than fine, if not as good as your current smartphone.

The 8-megapixel camera marries the tech from the Galaxy Nexus with the higher resolution stuff from other Samsung models.  What's more, the addition of new features makes sure that it's not just pixel count that folks worry about.

The experience that matters

Staying with the camera, we really love the near-zero shutter lag, 8 picture burst mode, and Best Shot.  We tested the various features over the weekend with kids playing in the pool and were impressed with the single shots around the water.  Switched to Best Shot and Burst Shot, we grabbed dozens of candid shots of children jumping off diving boards, playing with squirt guns, and going down the slide.  It was perhaps the camera features alone that had friends and family asking to see what we were doing.  Handing the phone off to demo for a moment, the general reaction when giving it back was, "That's my next phone!"

Resized from 3264x2448 but not edited or retouched.

There are also other features in the camera and its app that we really dig, including the smile detection, panoramic mode, HDR, and Buddy Photo Share face tagging. Upon taking a photo of various people, the phone will ask if you'd like to identify the person(s) in the photo.  Once you tell it who is in the picture, the Galaxy S III will automatically tag and sort images around them.  Similarly, it's easy to access all of those specific photos in your gallery and share them with contacts.  The front-facing 1.9-megapixel camera was great for self-portrait shots and video chat, however we didn't spend too much time on this front.

The Samsung Galaxy S III has a terrific feature called Smart Stay, which utilizes the front-facing camera to keep a watch on your eyes while browsing the internet, read documents, and other apps.  Designed to keep your phone from falling asleep on you, it ensures you don't have to tap the screen to keep it awake while you try to figure out what OMGWTFBBQKTXBAI means.  Results varied here however the brighter environments always worked better than dimly light bedrooms or living rooms.

Much will be said about the "wannabe-Siri" in S Voice and how it's almost as good of an experience.  I loved it and think the average user will be pleased with the way it handles voice requests and commands.  There's a sizable list of things that can be done here, including checking weather, Google searches, countdowns, timers, alarm clocks, appointments, phone settings, navigation, messages, emails, and more.  No, you can't ask if the Red Sox are winning right now, but it's more handy than anything else you've used so far.  We found the feature able to recognize commands and questions in ways that we were comfortable.  In other words, we didn't have to learn how to ask it questions with particular phrasing or pacing.

NFC and other sharing features

With so many devices coming with NFC support, it was not a surprise to learn that the Galaxy S III had an NFC chip inside.  What pleased us, however, was how Samsung was able to take the tech beyond mobile payments and the narrow perception it carries.  With TecTiles, users can program these postage-stamp sized stickers with whatever commands or tasks they'd like.  Put one on your nightstand and tap it before you go to sleep to turn off the ringer and Wi-Fi.  Stick one in the car and enable driving mode with the a simple bump.  Parents should set one of these in the house and program it to send off a "I'm home and safe" message for kids getting home from school. There's a seemingly endless number of things you could make TecTiles do and at $14.99 for 5-pack, it's a cheap way to smarten things up.

Introduced as Android Beam with Android 4.0, Samsung takes the sharing option to another level with S Beam. Paired with Wi-Fi Direct connection, this lets users share all kinds of content to other devices with a simple tap.  Once paired, it's a breeze to share pictures, video, web content, contact info, and more.

Along those same lines, AllShare gives users the ability to share movies, photos, music, and more with Samsung Smart TV's, DLNA-capable devices, and other options. Watching a movie on your phone?  Why not push it out to the projector or television?  The same goes for files you've got store in the cloud, or outside of your home.  Just look for the logo in the corner and share it!

Bottom line

Hype confirmed.  This handset is everything we'd expect out of Samsung's flagship device on just about every front imaginable.  Thanks to a unified branding and singular form factor, across multiple providers, there will be no mistaking one of these as better than the other.  And, since it's so widely available, the Galaxy S III stands as good a chance as any to knock the iPhone down another notch.  With Samsung's new smartphone you'll come for the gorgeous and stay for the experience.  Yes, some of the features can be found in third party apps or on other devices, however it's presented in a total package with which we've fallen fast in love.

EDITOR NOTE: We reviewed the AT&T and Sprint versions of the Galaxy S III and found them to be identical in every facet, save for data speeds.  Look for the Galaxy S III at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, U.S. Cellular, and C Spire Wireless.

Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile Galaxy S III launch delayed

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 11:15 AM PDT

Wow. Looks like 3 of the 4 major U.S. Carriers - Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T - have delayed their launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III. We're getting scattered reports, but here's what we've got.

Sprint has seemingly pushed back their launch by a week on their 32GB models, but are saying users who ordered the 16GB version should get theirs "a day or two behind", according to IBTimes. Sprint is noted as saying "we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate the patience of our customers as we work through this minor delay in availability". Customers can track their availability online.

AT&T is also supposedly delaying orders, with users getting messages saying their GS3 will be available "on or before June 28th", a definite push back from the initial June 21st. We have yet to hear back from AT&T as to whether or not this is official.

Finally, T-Mobile has announced that they are experiencing a backlog of orders, forcing them to push back the launch to June 29th for major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and San Francisco. There isn't any word yet on other markets, but we know that at least the big cities will be affected.

Be sure to sound off with your comments below.

Amazon Appstore preps for European distribution

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 08:43 AM PDT

Android developers looking to distribute their apps through Amazon's Appstore will be pleased to learn of the company's newly expanded portal.  It is now possible to submit applications for international distribution across select European countries.  Set to go live later in 2012, the AppStore will see its reach move into UK, Germany, Spain, France, and Italy. Look for the same great features, including in-app purchases, test drive, and more. If you're an Android developer who is already using the Amazon Appstore, check out the Portal today.  The same goes for prospective Android developers; head to  https://developer.amazon.com/home.html.

Amazon Opens Portal for International Mobile App Distribution

Developers around the world are invited to start submitting apps today for international distribution later this year, beginning with the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain

Change in developer agreement simplifies revenue share model and increases flexibility for developers

SEATTLE, Jun 20, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) - Amazon.com, Inc. today announced that developers can now submit apps for distribution this summer in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, with plans for further global expansion in the near future. Developers can get started by visiting the Amazon Mobile App Distribution Portal.

The Amazon Appstore in the U.S. has grown to tens of thousands of apps and games in just one year. As a result of features like 1-Click purchasing and Test Drive (which allows customers to try apps before purchasing them), developers report strong monetization from the apps they offer through Amazon. Amazon recently introduced an In-App Purchasing service that is simple for developers to integrate and helps monetize their apps and games even better than before, while still offering customers a seamless and secure 1-Click purchasing experience. Many developers have seen revenue skyrocket as a result of Amazon In-App Purchasing and are excited to offer their apps to even more customers outside the United States.

"We've seen that Amazon gamers are hungry for great content and are willing to open up their digital wallets to pay for it," said Niccolo de Masi, CEO and President of Glu Mobile. "Our latest title launched on Amazon, Frontline Commando, has seen both revenue per daily active user and lifetime value metrics exceed averages as compared to other devices and platforms. Taking a successful platform like Amazon's and expanding it across the globe is going to give us an even broader customer base and create an opportunity to generate even more revenue--something we are very excited about."

"We are delighted with the strong relationship that we've cultivated with the U.S. Amazon Appstore since its launch, and Kindle Fire has been hugely successful for our titles," said Peter Vesterbacka, CMO and Mighty Eagle of Rovio. "As a strong global brand with an international fan base, we are very excited to expand our offerings to Amazon's customers worldwide."

"With fan-favorite games like Plants vs. Zombies and SCRABBLE topping the charts, the U.S. Amazon Appstore has been a fantastic avenue for EA to reach an entirely new segment of consumers," said Bernard Kim, Senior Vice President of Global Social & Mobile Publishing for EA. "Amazon's international expansion marks an exciting opportunity to bring our interactive entertainment experiences to even more consumers around the world."

"Amazon is a key distributor for us, delivering users who prove to be loyal and prolific in their usage," said Evan Conway, OneLouder Apps President. "International adoption is critical to our business and we are excited to broaden our reach through Amazon's new global channel providing great mobile experiences for customers around the world."

"Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner is the #1 cooking app for the U.S. Amazon Appstore and Kindle Fire, and our community engages with our apps 45 percent more on Kindle Fire devices than any other device, so we know they love and trust the Amazon app platform," said Lisa Sharples, President of Allrecipes.com. "Allrecipes is a trusted global brand with successful international apps and we are very excited to have Amazon help us connect with new international home cooks."

"We are thrilled at the success our developers have experienced on the Amazon platform in the last year," said Jim Adkins, Vice President of the Amazon Appstore. "Some developers have seen revenue double since the launch of In-App Purchasing. We're excited to open the door to even more opportunity by expanding app sales outside the U.S. We see tremendous potential for current developers in our distribution program to grow with the international expansion. We also encourage new developers to join and participate in the platform's growth."

Developers should visit the distribution portal to learn about localizing apps with localized resource files for different regions, as well as other tips on how to prepare their apps for international distribution. Developers have the ability to select the countries where they would like to sell their apps. They can also set their list prices by marketplace. Those already participating in the program will automatically have their apps made available for sale internationally by default. And developers can easily change international availability for their apps via the distribution portal if they don't wish to sell in select countries. Developers who are new to the program can sign up at the Amazon Mobile App Distribution Portal.

New Amazon Mobile App Distribution Terms

Today Amazon is also announcing two changes to the Amazon Mobile App Distribution agreement. First, building on the success of the April In-App Purchasing launch, and to simplify our global terms, Amazon is aligning the revenue share for paid apps with that for in-app products sold using Amazon's In-App Purchasing Service. Starting on July 1, developers will earn 70 percent of list price on each paid app sale. This is a change from the prior terms under which developers earned either 70 percent of the app's sales price or 20 percent of list price (whichever was greater).

Second, the terms of the agreement have been adapted to provide even more flexibility around timing of app submissions. Developers can now better control which apps they will make available to Amazon customers, and when.

Developers can review the full agreement by visiting the Amazon Mobile App Distribution Portal now.

Jelly Bean Sneak Peek in I/O 2012 App?

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Last night, Google released its companion app for its yearly developer conference, 'Google I/O'. While the conference is mainly for developers, Android fans all over the world get excited for the event, due to the Keynote - which showcases what's next for Android. Many people are expecting to see something related to the next version of the OS  - code named 'Jelly Bean' - with a tentative version number of 4.1.

We may have just had our first peek at Jelly Bean in the form of screenshots for the I/O app; as you can see, the only change we notice is to the search bar, suggesting a small move away from the Holo theme - currently found in ICS - towards a more flat, minimalist  design. The sneak peek also seems to be intentional, as you can see the clock is displaying an invalid time, which could possibly be a date. The 25th of October would also roughly line up with Google's release cycle of major OS updates and a new Nexus phone.

What do you guys think? If the rest of the OS were to mimic this subtle change, would you be happy? Or would you prefer to stick with the Holo theme?

Nuance debuts next-gen Swype keyboard for Android

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 07:02 AM PDT

Nuance Communications today announced that they've released a brand new version of their Swype keyboard for OEMs in the Android hardware business.  Also available for beta testers, the new release features four significant features and improvements designed to offer a more robust keyboard experience.  On the whole, the new Swype keyboard gets smarter each time it is used and adapts to the user.

The four new features in Swype:

  • Next Word Prediction: Swype's next word prediction is amazingly intelligent as Nuance has integrated capabilities from its renowned XT9 portfolio. Swype gets smarter based on historical usage, so prediction becomes more accurate with each use.
  • Voice-Text Dictionary Syncing: Swype now includes a personal dictionary. Every new word a user enters on the keyboard gets added to their personal dictionary for speech and text, and you can even have Swype learn from emails, texts and posts. These updates are then mapped into Swype's unified language model, so people can immediately speak or write that same word no matter how unique or specialized.
  • Language Downloads: Swypers everywhere can communicate in any language they speak, as Swype now supports the download of over 55 languages right from the device.
  • Four-in-One Keyboard: Swype now delivers a four input modalities in one keyboard. People can swype from letter to letter; type rapidly with predictive text input powered by XT9; speak their text naturally through a fully integrated Dragon button; or, simply write letters, words and symbols using their fingertip. Further, users can switch back and forth between modalities on the fly – providing the ultimate in keyboard personalization.

We can't wait to get our hands on the new Swype keyboard and look forward to seeing it implemented in next generation Android smartphones.  In the meanwhile, we'll be playing around with the beta version and suggest you do, too!
