iHome iC50 FM Stereo Alarm Clock review

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 01:20 PM PDT

What's the last thing you do before you fall asleep at night?  Assuming you make it to bed and have the presence of mind, you generally do the same thing each night.  Chances are good that you plug your phone in and/or set your phone alarm.  Why not do both, and more, with iHome's iC50 FM Stereo Alarm Clock?

Doesn't matter if it's Samsung, HTC, Motorola...

We've spent the last few nights falling asleep next to the iC50 and have come to like having it on the nightstand.  Designed to work with any Android handset with a headphone jack and microUSB port, the device charges you up and plays your music at the same time.  The SmartSlide dock lets you plug in your phone in landscape or portrait mode and fits everything we threw at it.  The lip of the stand could be a little bigger but we're happy nonetheless.

Thanks to built-in speakers with 'Reson8 speaker chambers and EXB bass enhancement", you'll be drifting off to sleep with a Slacker Radio lullaby that sounds louder and clearer than your phone. Prefer to listen to some local radio instead?  The iHome iC50 has you covered there, too.

How big is the iC50?  Picture one of those square tissue boxes that you send to school and you've got a good reference point. It's compact and clean with responsive buttons and a cord long enough to reach behind the table or bed.  While the sound is not loud enough to fill a room, it's plenty for a sleeping environment or...ahem, you know.

Like any other alarm clock, the iC50 lets you wake up to music or notification tones, however there's a bit more play with a physical device.  The clock face has a couple of dimmer options to choose from and looks great from a distance.  For an added experience you can also download the iHome app from Google Play and set up some custom alarms.

Normally priced at $59.99, we were able to find the iHome iC50 ten bucks cheaper at Amazon. Seeing that it falls under $50, this would make a good gift for that Android lover headed off to college this fall.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD photos and specs leaked

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 08:49 AM PDT

About two months ago, we saw the first shot of the Droid RAZR HD, and now Droid-Life is back with some more images and information about Verizon's next big monster. The image above tells us that it's coming to Verizon for sure, and it will also feature Verizon's 4G LTE. Also, it's rumoured that it will feature a 13.1 megapixel camera with LED flash. According to the Droid-Life source, the display on the device is "amazing", and we heard that it's a 4.6 inch 720p display. There's also a 3300mAh battery behind the battery cover. Rumor has it that it's running on Qualcomm's 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, but we would like to wait to make this claim, as it's not confirmed yet.

There's a micro-USB and micro-HDMI port on the side, and hopefully we will see it sometime later this summer. No mention on the price right now, but it will probably cost around $200-$250 on a contract. Who's interested in this upcoming monster from Verizon? Tell us what do you think in the comment box below.

Rubin: Android activations eclipse 900k per day

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 08:05 AM PDT

Android activations keep moving forward a little more each day and have now crossed a new milestone.  According to a tweet from Google's own Andy Rubin, Android now sees more than 900,000 new activations every single day.  Quick math tells us that this comes out to more than 328 million phones per year.  Although the figure takes worldwide numbers into account, this equates to more than one phone for every U.S. citizen.  Where will the figure be by the time we hit the holiday shopping season?  We're just spit-balling here but we say 10 million a day.  No?

Samsung’s GT-B9120, a Gingerbread-powered flip phone

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 07:20 AM PDT

A new Android-based Samsung smartphone has been unearthed for the Chinese market which features a very unorthodox form factor.  Called the GT-B9120, the Android 2.3 Gingerbread handset provides an old school clam shell design, but with the world's most popular mobile OS.  Aside from the occasional knock off or no-name phone, we've yet to see any flip phone Android phones.

Hardware includes a pair of 3.5-inch 480x800 displays, a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260, 5-megapixel camera, 16GB internal storage, and HSPA, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth connectivity.  Pricing and exact launch details are not immediately clear however we cannot imagine this one coming to the United States anytime soon.  The dual-screen stuff just doesn't have much of a market and we've yet to hear anyone clamoring for the clam. That said, if you want one bad enough, you'll find a way to get your hands on it.

Some HTC One X phones having Wifi antenna problems, fix involves partial teardown

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 05:53 AM PDT

The HTC One X is currently one of the most popular (and powerful) Android devices on the market. Now, however, we're seeing some reports surface from users that there may be a very specific WiFi problem on the device, which adds to the reports of very bad lag while playing games. XDA user bigoliver decided to check it out for himself, and found out some specifics.

Click here to view the embedded video.

What did you just watch? The video above demonstrates how to find out if your One X is affected. According to bigoliver:

Gently squeeze the side back of your phone, between the camera lens and the volume buttons, if your WIFI signal strength improves only to drop back down when you stop squeezing then you have this seemingly common fault.

If you're affected, issues can range from terrible battery life to a simple inability to connect to WiFi at all. The advice is, if you can, simply return the phone and get it replaced... because the alternative, if your exchange period is over, isn't pretty:

1. Remove the Sim and Sim-Tray

2. Duck tape up the power and volume buttons, to save time fiddling with putting them back in afterwards.

3. Out of the recommended methods to open your phone below I would prefer to use my finger nail and or a guitar plectrum, I imagine this to be the best way to avoid scratches and damaging the case/screen. BE CAREFUL not to push the tool used too far inside the phone as this will cause damage.

4. I would probably use a soldering iron to make a secure connection between the pins, I fear that just bending the pins up slightly might develop the same issue again later on.

If this sounds scary, that's because it is. Even bigoliver himself backed away from this. HTC, however, is currently aware of the problem; there's even an HTC rep monitoring the thread in XDA. Moreover, while this may sound like Apple's "you're-holding-it-wrong" scenario, this is where HTC comes out above: if you're experiencing an issue, the rep would like a PM from you on XDA, so the support team at HTC has as much info to go off of as possible.

Check out the XDA source thread below for more info, specifics on the fix, and everything else related to this issue. Be sure to let us know in the comments if your One X is affected, and how you got it resolved.

Note: AndroidGuys is not help responsible for any damage done to your device.

Trolldroid: Robert Scoble says Andy Rubin leaving Android, U mad bro?

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 05:29 AM PDT

How to keep Android fans busy: start a rumor on Google+ about Andy Rubin leaving Google for a startup. That's exactly what happened yesterday, went Robert Scoble posted this:

Today I heard that the head of Android, +Andy Rubin, will soon leave Google and head to a new startup called http://www.cloudcar.com/

Now, that rumor has two purposes: one, it might be true, in which case I start thinking about what that means for Android. I certainly will be looking for those signs when I attend the Google IO conference.

Universe imploding! Worldwide doom approaching! Wait... just kidding. Andy Rubin then posted:

How a rumor gets factualized: Cloudcar are a group of friends who I give free office space to in my incubator in Los Altos.  Revel Touch (Mar Hershenson's company: www.reveltouch.com) is another cool company that shares this space.  I'm not joining either one and I don't have any plans to leave Google.  See you on the 27th!

And so, if you happen to see the former post on Google+, be sure to take into consideration the latter. The more you know...
