Sandisk 64GB Mobile Ultra microSDXC card review

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 02:14 PM PDT

Need more space on your Android phone or tablet?  Of course you do.  Even with the number of apps and services moving users to the cloud, nothing beats having a bunch of local storage for pictures, videos, games, and apps.  Assuming your Android device allows for microSD expansion, you'll likely buy a card at some point or another.  Our advice?  Go big.  Real big.  But keep it affordable.

We've had the privilege of using Sandisks' 64GB Mobile Ultra microSDXC card for the last few weeks and have seriously come to appreciate the peace of mind that comes with so much storage.  There's nothing quite like opening your camera app to record 1080p HD video and seeing more than 15 hours of recording time available.

Thanks to its Class 6 rating, the Sandisk Ultra microSDXC card reads and writes at a very quick clip, never stuttering or slowing.  We've streamed movies on our phone (Epic 4G Touch), both on the handset's display and out via MHL to a large TV.  No matter what we were running or doing, the HDMI experience was just as good as the in-hand.

A word of caution - not all devices can handle this type of card yet.  Tossed into a Motorola XOOM, the card didn't work at all.  When passed around a few smartphones we saw that some of them wanted to recognize it, but couldn't.  Doing a little bit of Googling we learned that a simple format of the card would fix things in most cases.

As most Android devices come with microSD and the memory technology improves over time we suspect you'll see these becoming more popular.  Priced well under $100 it's more storage than you'll ever need.  Just kidding, we don't make promises like that.

In all seriousness,  the $65 price tag is not bad at all and makes more sense than buying multiple 16GB and/or 32GB cards.  Plus, there's only one to use/misplace.  And, thanks to the SD adapter, this guy will work in most digital cameras, DSLRs, and other devices.

FixYa debuts slick HTML5-based product support site

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 01:47 PM PDT

FixYa launched a brand new HTML5-based mobile website this week which is designed to help users with pretty much any product issues you've ever had.  The site itself is not new, having already already established itself with 650,000+ community experts and millions of answers.  No, the new HTML5 design is the key here and it looks great on Android smartphones and tablets. The decision to create a more mobile-friendly web experience came naturally as 17 percent of FixYa's traffic comes from mobile devices.

We can imagine that many of you might not know exactly what FixYa does or why you might want to use the site.  To that we say there are plenty of reasons to use FixYa.  Ever owned a car?  A DVD player?  A gaming console? We're not exaggerating when we say that it's essentially a community-based FAQ service that encompasses nearly every "product" you can think up.  A quick glance at the questions and answers on FixYa's homepage yields results in ceiling fans, ice machines, printers, a weed whacker, and external hard drive.

This is exactly the sort of site you should direct your parents to when they have questions about why the TV isn't working right.  On the other hand, it's also perfect for that 16 year old who can't understand why the car is leaking a green fluid.

How does one get all this wonderful help?  Point your Android device to www.FixYa.com  and enjoy!

Motorola Dinara image leaks, smacks of AT&T’s Atrix 3

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 10:46 AM PDT

A new press-ready render of a Motorola handset has just arrived online, hinting at one of AT&T's next big Android handsets.  Tied with a codename of Dinara, the phone has the look and feel of an Atrix successor for summer 2012.  The Verge, who obtained the details and image, advise that the smartphone includes a 720p HD display and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

As to when this handset makes its way to AT&T is unclear however The Verge suggests the July 26 date listed on the screen might be worth watching.  We see nothing to refute the suggestion at this point but caution against getting your hopes up.  The dates  that accompany press renders is more often not the actual release.

Rumors of a Motorola Dinara are nearly a year old now and have even been tied to Verizon in the past.  We're not sure what the other specs are for the presumed Atrix 3 but we'd hope for dual-core 1.5GHz or better, 4G LTE connectivity, 16GB storage, and maybe a 3300mAh battery.

Huawei intros 4G LTE-ready Activa 4G for MetroPCS

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 07:08 AM PDT

Huawei takes another step in its expanding U.S. presence today announcing its first 4G LTE smartphone for MetroPCS. The 3.5-inch Activa 4G runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, features an 800MHz processor, 5-megapixel camera, and 4GB storage (microSD).  While it's not a top of the line set of hardware, you'll appreciate that it only costs $149.99 without a contract.  MetroPCS taps the Activa 4G with a list price of $249.99 so it's not clear how long the limited time instant discount and mail-in rebate will last.  Even without its rebates, the Huawei comes in lower than other 4G LTE handsets on the carrier's lineup, besting LG's and Samsung's offerings.

Vodaphone UK now shipping pebble blue Samsung Galaxy S III

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 07:19 PM PDT

Late to the party, but at least it's showing up. The infamous "pebble blue" Samsung Galaxy S III is coming out of it's shell a little more, shipping for Vodaphone UK customers... finally. Stock first started being delivered in Australia and Europe earlier this month. It should definitely be noted that the 16GB version is the one shipping to waiting hands, while we have no news on the 32GB version, which - in the UK - is exclusive to Vodaphone. According to the over-the-pond carrier:

We have now received stock of the pebble blue 16GB Samsung Galaxy SIII, all customers who pre-ordered this device before 7pm on Tuesday 29 May will start to receive their phones from tomorrow (8 June).

We're continuing to work closely with Samsung to secure stock of the 32GB pebble blue Samsung Galaxy SIII as soon as possible, and will update this thread as soon as we have more information.

If any of our friends in the UK are either getting theirs or not, be sure to let us know in the comments.

Virgin Mobile launching the HTC One V within two weeks?

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 07:06 PM PDT

The HTC One V has been around for a long time, and it was scheduled to be launched in USA this summer, and we heard that all three regional carriers will be getting it, including Virgin Mobile. Now, Droid-Dog is reporting that Virgin Mobile will start selling the device in the next two weeks, and the image above is probably how the Virgin's One V will look.

Word on the street is that it comes with a $200 price tag, and that's without any contract whatsoever. It comes with Android 4.0 ICS, Sense 4 UI, a 3.7 inch WVGA display, 1GHz single-core processor, Beats Audio, 5MP rear camera with LED flash and 720p video recording, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory, and MicroSD card support. For just 200 bucks? I think that's a fair deal.

Do you think that One V is the best "affordable" device right now? Tell us about it in the comments below.

Acer announces budget quad-core tablet Iconia Tab A110 at Computex for under $200

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 04:45 PM PDT

Computex is going in Taipei right now, and a bunch of companies introduce new devices there, such as ASUS and Computex. Now, its Acer's time to shine at the event by introducing a quad-core tablet with a smashing price tag. Acer introduced the Iconia Tab A110 featuring an Nvidia Tegra chipset, 1GB of RAM,  7-inch display with 1280 x 800 resolution, a microSD card slot, a front-facing camera, HDMI connectivity and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.  That's not all: the speechless thing here is the price, as Acer is planning to launch it in market for under $200.

What I see here is Acer is trying to jump in the "affordable tablets with bells and whistles" bag; the Kindle Fire is already a part of it, and we all know that it was a real deal breaker for all other Android tablets. Also, ASUS and Google are planning to launch a similar tablet, except it will be the first to rock Android 4.1 - A.K.A.: Jelly Bean.

However, Acer is planning to launch this gem in the third quarter of the year, so mark your calenders, and try to be patient. As a tablet lover, I am really impressed by Acer's strategy, and I am definitely looking forward to it. How about you? Tell us what do you think about this new upcoming tablet in the comments below.

Intel says Android is not ready for quad-core devices

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 04:15 PM PDT

We recently saw the first ever Android phone with 'Intel Inside' power, and it was launched in India a short time ago. Intel is one of the most famous companies in the world when talking about processors and computer hardware; they are the leaders in the field, and they recently entered the world of smartphones to compete with other companies like Qualcomm, Nvidia, Samsung, Texas Instrument etc.. Every company loves criticizing their competitors (no, we don't, of course!), and Intel also spilled some of the beans about theirs as Mike Bell, GM of Intel's Mobile and Communications Group, said:

The way it's implemented right now, Android does not make as effective use of multiple cores as it could, and I think – frankly – some of this work could be done by the vendors who create the SoCs, but they just haven't bothered to do it.

What it seems he's actually trying to say is that Android isn't ready for quad-cores right now, and other companies should focus to improve the operating system multi-tasking support... instead of just focusing on the hardware. For example: even there are six cores, if the software isn't properly optimized and well-managed with it, there's merely no advantage.

When Intel will launch quad-core processors, I think that will be the right time for Android to have quad cores. The market is very strong right now, and what the customer believes is "more cores, more speed" - Do you think that's right? tell us about it in the comment box below.
