Facebook Wants To Recommend More Than Just Friends, Introduces New App Center

As Facebook continues to evolve as a social networking platform, so does its services offered to all users. You already know that Facebook knows anything and everything about you when it comes to friends and families, so now it’s turned its attention to your friends and families with smartphones and their apps by introducing the App Center. Basically— the App Center will identify users’ existing apps of your Facebook contacts and recommend similar apps for users to use. The App Center is by no means small either— it’s expected to launch with over 500 apps between web, iOS and Android users, while also providing users with nothing but “high-quality” apps.

The App Center will be built-in to the iOS and Android apps in addition to the main Facebook website. Once users see an app they may like, Facebook will have a “send to mobile” feature to get content on a device and when installation is required, users will get a link to the Play Store for download. You folks excited about Facebook getting to know you even better than it already does?

T-Mobile Offering Another ‘All Phones Free’ Sale on Fathers Day Weekend

It appears that we can look forward to another impressive T-Mobile Fathers Day sale as TmoNews has gotten a hold of some leaked promo material spilling the juicy details. The sale will go live next Friday and Saturday, the 15th and 16th, and will be another one of those great “All Phones Free” sales. It’s a real shame that the Galaxy S III will launch the following week because that would be one hell of a deal that I am sure many of you would appreciate. Although, if you have been holding out on getting a new HTC One S, this might be the prefect opportunity to snag one for free so mark you calendars because these sales only happen once in a blue moon.

Verizon Announces New LTE Markets To Launch Soon

Verizon announced a slew of new markets to be added to their already massive LTE network starting June 21st.  Verizon claims that 2/3 of the US population are now covered by LTE service.  The new markets include:

  • Sharon, PA
  • Bedford, PA
  • Burlington, NC
  • Jacksonville, NC
  • New Bern, NC
  • Gillette, WY

Verizon also announced future expansions in some already existing markets:

  • In North Carolina the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area (“The Triangle”, for you locals)
  • Areas of Colorado including Boulder and Ft. Collins areas
  • The vicinity of Indiana, PA
  • Portions of Florida including Panama City and Palm Beach
Great news for Verizon customers in those areas, it’s good to see Verizon pushing its network into smaller towns and communities.   For some of you, it may be time to start looking at the Incredible 4G LTE that’s coming soon.

Angry Birds Space Utopia Gets Treated To New Levels In New Update

One of the greatest games in the world has just been made even sweeter. Angry Birds Space Utopia has gotten a small, but fairly significant update which brings additional levels and means more fun for players. Developer Rovio pulls no stops either as it gives you all the sweets, junk and unhealthy food you can handle. The levels are available for you now, just make sure you eat a big meal before— otherwise you may find yourself suddenly craving for a sweet, sweet donut.

Vodafone Begins Shipping The Samsung Galaxy S III Phones To Customers

Despite the well-known delays plaguing the anticipated arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S III in the UK, the superphone is one step closer to arriving in owners’ hands thanks to Vodafone UK. The mobile wireless carrier has announced through its Twitter page that it has received a shipment of Galaxy S III phones and have begun rolling them out to customers who preordered the device. More specifically– customers who ordered the device on or before May 29th will receive the phone from today, June 8th. While you can’t help but smile, there is a major catch to the smartphones being shipped— actually two catches. The first is the only version being shipped is the Pebble (Metallic?) Blue version of the smartphone. The second is the 16GB model is the only one in stock… this means those of you who are expecting the white 16GB model or 32GB blue/white models are out of luck for the time being. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take too long before we see the other versions make its way out to customers’ hands.

Judge Dismisses Apple vs. Motorola Patent Case

Monday was supposed to see the Apple vs. Motorola trial begin, but Judge Richard Posner has decided to tentatively dismiss the case altogether, saying that “neither party can establish a right to relief.” Basically, he’s saying that neither Apple nor Motorola have presented a valid case.

Judge Posner has been cranky about this case from the start, even warning Apple at one point to stop filing so many motions. He says that neither side have been able to prove exactly how much the alleged infringements have cost anyone, and since the whole thing boils down to money, he doesn’t see a reason to block either company from selling products. Sounds to me like he’s saying “you’ll each be better off just getting back to business.”

His dismissal order is temporary, however, giving Posner some time to work up a formal opinion which he will issue next week. In other words, he could still change his mind. Most likely, if this ruling stands, an appeal will be made. But apparently Motorola is feeling confident with this order, making the following statement:

“We are pleased by the Illinois trial court’s tentative ruling today dismissing Apple’s patent claims and look forward to receiving the full decision.“

I say hallelujah for Judge Posner. It seems like every other day there’s a tech lawsuit of some sort, and honestly it’s getting a little tiresome. Who’s with me?

Kickstarter Project Pocket TV Makes Your TV Smart With Android 4.0 [Video]

Smart TV set top boxes, as well as full-on integrated Smart TV sets, are becoming very popular these days. But how do you make your existing TV smart without adding another bulky box to your entertainment center? Kickstarter project Pocket TV could be the answer.

Pocket TV is a small computer running Android 4.0, with an HDMI output to connect to your TV or monitor. It supports 1080p output, Wi-Fi, has 4GB of storage, a microSD slot, and is small enough to fit in your hand. It has a 1GHz Cortex A9 processor, 512MB RAM, and a USB port for connecting a keyboard or external hard drive.

Since the device runs standard Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, it behaves more like a giant touchless tablet. To get around the fact that your TV is not a touchscreen, the makers of Pocket TV have come up with an interesting way to control the device. While a standard IR remote will work, as will a smartphone remote app, you also have the option to use their Air Remote, which is basically a keyboard about the size of a phone, with gyroscopic controls. Wave it around to control the screen, like a Wii.

This novel device already passed its $100,000 goal on Kickstarter with 31 days left, so things are looking good for this to ship in October. Get your Pocket TV and Air Remote bundle for pitching in $135 now, or wait until it’s released and pay $190.

Oracle Slapped with Google’s Legal Fees

Oracle has received another slap in the face as a result of its fight with Google over Java and Android. Judge William Alsup set as one of the conditions for filing the case against Google, that Oracle had to pay Google’s legal fees if they lost.  This was intended as a deterrent to avoid wasting the court’s time.

It looks like this was forward thinking on the part of the judge since Oracle lost the case and is now strapped with paying what is believed to be upwards of $300,000, the result of being dragged through the courts multiple times.
