HTC: Desire HD to stay on current software, no ICS update

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 05:06 PM PDT

Android Central

After all the confusion surrounding the status of the HTC Desire HD's Android 4.0 update, we have confirmation from HTC that it's completed its analysis of the software and reached a decision. Unfortunately, it's disappointing news for Desire HD owners -- the manufacturer has decided not to update the phone to Ice Cream Sandwich, saying it has the best software experience possible for its hardware on the current Android 2.3/Sense 3 ROM.

Here's the company's statement in full --

"After extensive testing, HTC has determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD.  When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers."

So it's sad pandas all around this evening. It looks like Desire HD owners will need to rely on the custom ROM community if they want a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean. In any case, the device already has several unofficial Android 4.x ROMs available, so at least those brave enough to root won't be short of options.

Jelly Bean is now running on the (wait for it) Optimus S via a CyanogenMod 10 port

Jelly Bean for the Optimus S Jelly Bean for the Optimus S

The LG Optimus One line will never die. I have a feeling that one day, far into the future where apes control the planet and man is farmed like livestock, The little Optimus that could will still be going strong and folks will be hacking them with their stubby, apish hands. As proof, I offer Android Developer drewwalton19216801's CyanogenMod 10 (Jelly Bean) port for the Optimus S.

It's not perfect, as Drew puts it "There will be bugs, and things may crash from time to time", and the usual suspects like camera and MMS still need some work, but I'd wager that more than a few of the folks using and loving the Optimus S will be more than happy to run this as their daily driver.

We're still waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich on some of last years best phones (hello there, HTC Rezound) but this is proof positive that a little bit of source code and some awesome developers can make magic happen. Whether you're using the Optimus S, or just a fan of all things awesome, hit the link below and have a look. Be sure to give Drew a little well-earned love!

Linux Foundation E.D. Jim Zemlin: 'Android is going to continue to gain traction in the enterprise'

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 03:33 PM PDT

Jim ZemlinLinux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin sat down with the Wall Street Journal to talk about Android and the enterprise market, and needless to say he's pretty confident about the future. Zemlin may be a bit biased towards Android, as are most of us here, but he does have a history with large corporate environments, having worked previously with companies like Western Wireless (now T=Mobile) and Covalent Technologies.

Zemlin seems confident that as HTML 5 application deployment moves forward, Android and the diverse group of OEMs that bring a selection of hardware at all price points are uniquely situated to provide "a better way to provision, manage and deploy their application infrastructure." In short, choice equals strength here, too. We'll have to agree, and throw in that the ability to customize the system to better suit the needs of your company has to sound awfully good to those CIO's who are thinking of the future of mobile enterprise. We heard yesterday during Google's quarterly earnings report that G is eyeing the enterprise market, so we expect to see more features roll out across Google's services -- including Android.

He also has a few words to say about the Google buyout of Motorola Mobility, and the idea that the Nexus 7 is a service, not a product. It's a great read from someone held in high regard in the open-source community, and paints a pretty bright future for our favorite mobile OS. Hit the source link below and take a gander.

Google confirms Nexus S Jelly Bean roll-out, lists carriers

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 02:32 PM PDT

Android Central

We broke the news yesterday that some GSM Nexus S models were starting to see their Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update rolling out, and now we have the official confirmation from Mountain View. Google took to its +Nexus Google+ account to bring news that Jelly Bean is currently pushing out to customers on at least five carriers around the world, as well as the unlocked GSM models, presumably. Here's the official word --

"We've started rolling out Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, to Nexus S phones on a number of carriers including T-Mobile, H3G [Three], O2, Rogers as well as Vodafone in most countries, with more to come. Enjoy!"

No word on Sprint's Nexus S 4G just yet, but given that phone's history with updates, owners could be in for a fairly long wait. If you've already gotten Jelly Bean on your Nexus S, shout out in the comments and let us know how you're doing.

Google Play Music is not compatible with the new Sony NSZ-GS7/GX70 units

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 02:28 PM PDT

NO!!!!!!

Heads up if you're thinking about grabbing one of Sony's new Google TV set-top boxes -- unfortunately Google Play Music is not compatible with the device(s). The UPS man dropped one off here earlier, and I've been setting things up to replace my aging Logitech Revue, and just hit this, which is a showstopper for me. I'll have more thoughts and some first impressions of the device for you guys and gals tomorrow, but I wanted to spread the word in case you're a music lover and thinking of picking one up with today's paycheck.

We've got no idea whether we should point our fingers at Sony or Google over this one, but hopefully it can be rectified shortly. I've reached out to both parties, and will update everyone when I have something to share. For now, I'm switching inputs and going back to the Nexus Q so I can let Black Sabbath relax my tension away.

Dead Trigger now free and updated with new content

Dead Trigger now free and updated with new content

Yesterday we heard that Dead Trigger would be offering a bunch of new weapons for dealing with the zombie apocalypse, but what we didn't know is that the game would be going free to play. This is great news, considering how much the game leans on in-app purchases. Here's a recap of the new features.

  • New weapons: Chain Saw, Lewis Machine Gun, Marine Engine with blades and American West Rifle
  • New gadget: Head-Flator X100 to inflate the heads of zombies to XXXL size!
  • New zombies: mutated mobsters or armoured SWAT members
  • New environments: underground car park or secret research base
  • Survival arena, that is tailor-made for massacre of hordes of zombies
  • Daily rewards
  • Casino: try your luck with a slot machine
  • Save game data with cloud backup
  • Support Adreno 205, including Sony Xperia Play

Madfinger Games warns that folks with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus or a Nexus 7 running 4.1.1 shouldn't install due to an issue on Google's side that causes the game to force close after opening. As for other devices, the developer promises that they're gradually adding more and more support as fast as they can. iPhone and iPad owners can expect this updating landing on the iOS side sometime next week.

You can get downloading at the link below, or check out my review of the game over at iMore. It's an awesome, action-packed game with stellar graphics and more than a little bit of goofiness. Anyone else eager to try out the Head-Flator X100?

Jet Set Radio skating onto Android 'this summer'

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 10:27 AM PDT

Android Central

Here's a blast from the past for everyone. Sega has been pretty good at bringing us some of our favorite games from yesteryear to play on our Android devices, and this summer we get to play another one. It's been announced today that the HD remake of Jet Set Radio, due to land on consoles, will also be coming to Android.

Anyone who owned a Sega Dreamcast will quite possibly remember, fondly, Jet Set Radio from the first time around. In my case, I've still got a copy. The mobile version will have some mobile-centric features too, one of which is Openfeint integration. Apparently, players will also be able to use pictures taken on their device as the in-game graffiti. Now that's a nice touch. Just don't do anything rude with it, OK, kids.

We're really looking forward to this one, and despite no more accurate date than "this summer," we're sure it's going to be worth waiting for. Check out the full press release after the break.

Hailo branches out, can now hail a cab with your Android device in Dublin, Ireland

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 10:10 AM PDT

Hailo Dublin

Hailo has been something of an overnight success since its launch towards the end of 2011. The idea was so simple, but truly a way in which Londoners could use their Android devices in actual, real world, day-to-day situations. By making a sometimes unpleasant experience -- trying to flag down a cab -- and getting your Android device to do the work. Anyone in London for the Olympics, seriously, download a copy of this app while you're there.

Today the Hailo team marks another milestone since the launch of the service, in their first expansion outside of London. The second city to go live, is the Irish capital, Dublin. This is fantastic news, and hopefully the start of a bright, and widespread future for the service. There's a whole lot of cities around the world that could benefit from something as useful as this.

How to: Activate the Google Sound Search widget in Jelly Bean if it's not in the drawer

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 09:55 AM PDT

Android Central

One of the many added goodies within Jelly Bean, is the Google Sound Search widget, sometimes referred to as Google Ears. It's really simple, but also a really nice touch to have built in to the OS.

For some reason -- quite possibly some licensing stuff -- it isn't always there to choose from in the widget drawer for everybody. True, that when both my own Galaxy Nexus got the 4.1 update, and my new Nexus 7 arrived, neither had this widget. Being based in the UK, I imagine that it's got something to do with location. There are alternative apps, Shazam, Soundhound for example, but why should you have to use an alternative application when Google supposedly builds the functionality into the OS.

Installing the apk that's been doing the rounds for a while doesn't do the trick either. On Jelly Bean it doesn't seem to like installing, but it works great on ICS. The app itself isn't missing from the device, it's just frozen so you can't use it. As too is Google Play Magazines, and Google Wallet.

So, how do you use it? Well, to unfreeze it requires root. But from there, it's real simple. Titanium Backup is a fantastically useful root application, and is what we'll be using here to make things happen. If you're not sure on what freezing and unfreezing is, we'll walk you through it.

Once you've opened Titanium Backup, and all the application data has loaded, go ahead and hit the "backup/restore" button at the top. You should then be presented with a comprehensive list of every single application installed on your device. Including, all the system apps. Scroll through until you see "Sound Search for Google Play" -- which will also be highlighted by a purple bar -- click on it, and hit the defrost button. Next time you go into the widget drawer, there it will be, ready and waiting.

Also, remember that clicking on a song once it's been identified won't do anything either, other than take you to the main Google Play Store front page. One day, maybe, Google will bring the full range of content to non-U.S. users. We can hope.

The same tactic also applies to Google Play Magazines, and Google Wallet. But, outside of the U.S. there's not really anything you can use these for anyway, and Google Wallet will tell you so if you try to launch it.

The only downside -- when you reboot your device, things will be reset and the app will be frozen again. But, if you're like me, your device rarely gets rebooted unless you're going in and out of recovery. So it's inconvenient, but not massively.

Sony Google TV box on sale in the UK, marks the long awaited arrival of the the platform

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 09:48 AM PDT

Android Central

Google TV has finally made it to the UK. The first Google TV device to go on sale on these shores, is the Sony NSZGS7B -- catchy isn't it -- which despite a different, er, name, is the same box as Sony just started shipping in the U.S

The Dixons group has it up for sale at £199.99, as does Sony direct, which isn't necessarily going to break the bank. And, with no Nexus Q to catch the eye over here, it's potentially more worth checking out. With the UK launch too, comes UK specific on-demand content such as the BBC iPlayer and 4OD.

Otherwise, it looks to be the same Google TV experience our American cousins have been getting all this time. What the future truly holds for Google TV is a mystery, but at least us Brits finally got to be a part of it.

Google snags e-mail genius Sparrow

Sparrow and Google

Those of you dreaming of a better Android e-mail client might one day get your wish -- Google has acquired Sparrow. Sparrow's been an iOS/OSX staple, and we can only hope it'll bring its talents to Android, along with Gmail at large.

Writes Sparrow:

We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience.

Now we're joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.

We’d like to extend a special thanks to all of our users who have supported us, advised us, given us priceless feedback and allowed us to build a better mail application. While we’ll be working on new things at Google, we will continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users.

We're still way early into this one, but this much is clear: This is nothing but good for Gmail, and here's to hoping Android gets a boost as well.

Update: Our pals at iMore.com, who have a good bit more experience with Sparrow, have penned a few thoughts. Read them here.

Google updates maps for selected European, African and Asian countries, now with more detail than ever

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 08:14 AM PDT

Android Central

Your Android device, coupled with Google Maps -- in particular the new, offline features -- is a pretty powerful way of finding your way around when you visit another country. Google never settles for 'good enough' though, and today has announced a slew of more detailed maps across selected European, African and Asian countries.

The affected nations are; Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lesotho, Macau, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican City.

The added details cover a pretty broad spectrum too, from coastlines and bodies of water, to more accurate names and locations for points of interest, and several places in between. One example given is that now, when you look down on St Marks Square in Venice on Google Maps, you'll see accurately aligned canals, 3D buildings and a whole heap of labels on different points of interest.

Ferry routes also get a mention, as for many places Google has gone and tidied these up and added better, and more clearly labelled ferry routes. Local roads are now more accurately distinguished from the main highways, and multi-lingual names are available for larger number of roads in these countries.

For the full rundown, hit up the source link below. As for me, I'm going off to explore Venice some more -- albeit only from a Nexus 7.

SanDisk 16 GB microSDHC card review

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 08:14 AM PDT

SanDisk 16 GB micro SDHC card

That little empty slot inside your Galaxy S3 is just waiting to be filled by a high capacity microSD card – what are you waiting for?

The Samsung Galaxy S III (S3) has been lauded in the press, praised here at Android Central and generally loved by its users.

Of the many great features, one that separates the Galaxy S3 from many of its competitors (like the HTC One X or the iPhone 4S) is that the back comes off. A removable back means removable batteries and removable storage.

Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD trailer emerges, could release be approaching?

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 06:26 AM PDT

Huawei announced the MediaPad 10 FHD all the way back at February at Mobile World Congress. That feels like an age away, but it seems that the 10.1 inch tablet may be due to release sooner rather than later. The above promotional video has shown up on Huawei's YouTube channel today, and it looks the marketing guys have done a great job with a flashy promo video for Huawei's flagship tab.

The metallic MediaPad 10 FHD will come packing a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, LTE support (on some models), 16GB of storage and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It's 10.1 inch HD IPS display (1920 x 1200 pixels), and as we mentioned in our MWC hands-on, it's a fantastic-looking panel. An 8MP camera is also onboard partnered with a dual LED flash, along with a lower-res front-facer.

Huawei certainly isn't short on high-end Android devices at the moment. With the Ascend P1 now available, the and Asecnd D Quad just around the corner, the company will be hoping its new MediaPad will be able to compete alongside the likes of ASUS's Transformer Pad Infinity. Keep watching for further developments as the 10 FHD approaches release.

Gameloft's The Dark Knight Rises released in Google Play today

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 06:16 AM PDT

Android Central

Ed. note: We're all painfully aware of what happened in Aurora, Colo. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved. And we're turning off the comments on this post. - Phil

Today is a pretty huge day for Batman fans around the world. Finally, the long awaited third Christopher Nolan adaptation, The Dark Knight Rises, hits movie theaters around the world. And, as promised, Gameloft's official companion game also sees release today into the Google Play Store.

We're talking a premium title here, and as such, it carries a premium price. In the UK it'll set you back £4.99, and in the U.S. that equates to $6.99. But one look at the visuals alone, and it pretty much justifies the asking price. If you're still carrying some of that free Google Play credit around, what better device to play it on than your new Nexus 7?

Be prepared though, the download is big. Actually, it's huge -- 1.7GB. But the visuals, and the huge Gotham City maps taken into account, you can see why it's so big. We're just getting started with this one, and we'll no doubt be back with more when we've spent some real game time with it. To grab it for yourselves, head on over to the Play Store, hit download, and go make a coffee while you wait.

Update: Seems we were a bit keen in wanting to play this on our Nexus 7. Doesn't look like it's compatible at the moment. Darn shame.

Uncertainty surrounds Desire HD ICS update as HTC issues revised statement

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 04:27 AM PDT

Android Central

It seems there’s a little more confusion than there should be surrounding the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update (or lack thereof) for the HTC Desire HD. Last week Canadian carrier TELUS released an update roadmap stating that HTC had canceled the update. Then a few days back, we reached out to HTC and received a statement indicating that updates for the Desire HD, and similarly-spec’d Desire S, were still on the table.

Since then we’ve been in touch with TELUS, which insists that it’s been informed that the update had been suspended, and that it was an HTC decision unrelated to TELUS’s network, testing or software. TELUS said that if HTC was to go ahead with the ICS update after all, it'd gladly test it and put it out for its customers. And after seeking further clarification from HTC, we were given a revised statement indicating that it’s still examining the Desire HD’s ability to run ICS --

"HTC is committed to providing the best customer experience on our devices and are currently determining the ability to support Ice Cream Sandwich on the HTC Desire HD.  We'll provide more information when we've completed our analysis."

So it looks like the future of ICS on the Desire HD is currently hanging in the balance, and that HTC is in the process of working out if it can support Android 4.0 without compromising the user experience. This could also be worrying news for owners of the Desire S and Thunderbolt, which sport almost identical internals, and which are also due to receive an ICS upgrade.

Whatever happens, we’ll keep you posted with any further developments on HTC ICS updates.

Samsung SCH-i200 'Jasper' spotted wearing Verizon branding

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 03:49 AM PDT

Android Central

Those looking for a a Samsung equivalent to the Droid Incredible 4G LTE may soon be in luck -- the image above has surfaced via the @evleaks Twitter account, along with a purported list of specifications. Supposedly the device in the image is the Samsung "Jasper" (likely a codename), a phone with the product number SCH-i200. Inside it's said to be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, with a WVGA screen, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the new Samsung TouchWiz Nature UX. As you'll be able to tell from the branding on the back, it's a Verizon 4G LTE device.

Design-wise, it's definitely channeling some of the Galaxy S III, and it shares its curvaceous chassis and other design cues with Samsung's current flagship. The button setup is also of interest -- as we've seen on some LG phones, "Jasper" sports four capacitive keys, including a dedicated multitasking key.

There's no complete spec list available just yet, nor is there any info on pricing or availability, but we'll keep you posted as further details of this mid-range beast emerge.

Sky Go Android app gets ICS support on Galaxy Nexus, Note and S III

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 03:34 AM PDT

Android Central

Just as was promised a few weeks back, British broadcaster Sky has opened up its Sky Go on-demand video app to certain Android devices running 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above, including the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III. The update brings ICS support to the Sky Go app for the first time, allowing Sky subscribers with these devices to view the same streaming content available on approved Gingerbread devices like the Desire S and Desire HD. Unlike many other app vendors, Sky tailors its offerings to specific phones, usually high-selling models, so Sky Go remains restricted to a small number of handsets for now.

As we reported a few weeks back, Sky Go recently launches new streaming content across its range of Sky Go apps, including entertainment channels Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Living and Sky Arts 1. An app update also allowed subscribers to view and manage their accounts on-the-go.

If you find yourself in possession of both a Sky subscription and one of the supported devices, you download the Sky Go app for Android via the Google Play web interface linked below.

HTC confirms Jelly Bean updates for One X, XL and S, we feign surprise

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 03:08 AM PDT

Android Central

We had the first hints of an announcement on HTC Jelly Bean updates yesterday by way of Aussie carrier Telstra, but now the manufacturer is sending out a statement confirming what many already expected with regards to Android 4.1 upgrades. Unsurprisingly, HTC says the One X, One S and One XL (that's the Snapdragon S4-powered One X with LTE, sold on AT&T as the One X) are all due for a bump up to the latest version of Android --

"We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean."

So it looks like there'll be more updated to follow, and we'd certainly expect phones like the EVO 4G LTE, Dinc 4G LTE and (maybe) Rezound to be among the list of HTC phones that eventually get Jelly Bean. Fingers crossed, guys. In the meantime, check out our predictions of which devices will be getting Android 4.1 in the months ahead.
