Five for Friday: Android apps for NPR fans

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 02:35 PM PDT

You might already know this, but we're huge fans of NPR, podcasts, and other on-demand news and tech shows. As such, we're constantly on the lookout for ways to keep up to date with shows and programs from stations out of New York, Chicago, and more.  Over the years we've grown from simply loving Terry Gross and Fresh Air to anxiously awaiting new episodes of Freakonomics, This American Life, StoryCorps, and RadioLab.

Below you will find five apps for listening to NPR and other similar programming from your Android device.  While we recognize that there are more apps available (NPR official app), we happen to like these particular titles well enough to share them with you. We can also appreciate that you've got your favorite apps to listen to on-demand shows and programs so to that end we ask that you share with us in the comments!

This week's topic: Android apps for NPR fans

Radiolab

Listen to new episodes each week as well as your favorite shows dating all the way back to the beginning.  Have one you really love and want to share?  Put it on Facebook or Twitter, or send an email to your friends letting them know what they are missing.  Keep up with the blogs and show updates whenever the notion strikes you or enable the push notifications and stay on top op news, new episodes and Radiolab events. Just for fun, you can make your own audio effects, or texts and photos based on requests from Jad and Robert.

WNYC

Not tied to any singular show, this one offers live streams from shows such as Radiolab, Morning Edition, and All Things Considered. Grab news articles and podcasts across a variety of topics and programs, including On the Media, Freakonomics Radio, Fresh Air, and This American Life.  Additional details include an event calendar, show alarm clock, schedule of upcoming episodes, and more.  Like you would expect, there's an option to donate or support to keep things rolling along.

Stitcher Radio

Perhaps one of our favorite Android apps ever, Stitcher lets users listen to more than 10,000 radio shows, podcasts, and live stations. No matter what you're into, there's something to listen to.  All your favorite NPR stuff is there, but so are shows from Tedtalks, SModcast, Slate, MSNBC, and thousands of others. Additional details include breaking news, a custom election center, user-generated favorites, and a smart station that learns your habits. Bonus points for a seamless web experience and SONOS integration!

WBEZ

Centered around the Chicago-based radio station, this app gives users quick and easy access to shows like Morning Edition,  All Things Considered, Marketplace, and This American Life. Although not as good-looking as other apps in this space, it's an intuitive way to listen to streams or check out news from the blog. Like other crowd-funded stations and services, there's a shortcut to donate.

Public Radio International

Listen to shows on demand and stay up on your dose of Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know?, The Tavis Smiley Show, or broadcasts from the BBC and other players. Create a custom playlist and hit up everything you want to listen to, share your shows and news with others, and pull up a live show anytime you want.  Although it has been nearly a year since its last update, the app looks better than most radio stations but could use a bit of Android 4.0 aesthetics.

Your Turn

What apps are you using to check out NPR and its related shows?  Is it one of the above or something we overlooked?  Leave a comment below with your picks!

Samsung reportedly set to deliver 4.1 for Galaxy S III as early as August

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 11:13 AM PDT

Samsung is fast at work with an Android 4.1 update for their Galaxy S III line and could deliver it as soon as August, according to unofficial Samsung blog, Sammobile.  It's not as if we didn't expect the hardware maker to deliver the update but it's nice to have a time frame to look forward to.  Going back a generation, Samsung is also rumored to be putting together Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S II series.  Considering the sheer volume of those devices running around, we'd certainly hope that Samsung wants to them some love.

Without naming any other specific models, Sammobile's  source also claims that other high end Samsung models (ex: Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 2.0, Galaxy Tab 7.7) will see Jelly Bean.  Again, not a stretch, but it's reassuring nonetheless.

First images of S4-powered Samsung Jasper appear online

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 10:12 AM PDT

It has been a while since we last talked about the Samsung SCH-I200 'Jasper' smartphone however it appears we should be ready to get back into the swing of things.  The first images of the handset have appeared online, giving us a look at what should be a decent mid-range device of the Samsung camp.

Details, as we've learned over the last few months, are said to include a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 chipset, a WVGA display, and support for Verizon's 4G LTE network.  The design is pretty simple, if not a little plain and Nexus S-like. As far as software goes, the image tells us that we're in for an Ice Cream Sandwich experience with a bit of TouchWiz poured on top. You'll notice that the navigation includes the standard three software buttons and what may be a dedicated multi-tasking key as well.

Considering the images are online now and the rumors of the phone have been around for months now, we figure we're in for an announcement before too long.

HTC confirms Android 4.1 for One X, One XL and One S

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 09:20 AM PDT

So you bought yourself a shiny, new HTC One series phone this summer and now you're wondering about Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.  Worried that you won't get the latest and greatest version of the platform?  HTC has put those fears to rest, somewhat, announcing the update is coming for the line of smartphones.

We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean. - HTC statement

Bear in mind that this is not to say that our U.S. versions are included, however we fully expect to see the local editions to see 4.1 Jelly Bean in due time.  Our guess is that we'll get our update within a few weeks or so after the international models. We'll be curious to see what is said of the EVO 4G LTE and Droid Incredible 4G.
