Looks like Acer isn’t about to abandon their Android smartphone business and is gearing up to release a new low-end device for the masses. The Acer Liquid Gallant Duo (duo is for dual-SIM) is an affordable Android phone designed to give customers adequate specs in return for rock bottom low pricing. $230 off-contract is all it will take for someone to get a hold of an Android smartphone running Ice Cream Sandwich. Rest of the specs are as follows:

  • CPU speed: 1GHz, MTK 6575
  • Platform: Android Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Network: HSPA/WCDMA 900/2100 MHz / Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz / (Band frequency, HSPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent)
  • Dual SIM
  • Memory: Internal phone storage: 4GB / RAM: 1GB / microSD slot (up to 32GB)
  • Display: 4.3-inch touch screen with qHD resolution
  • GPS: Internal GPS antenna
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, Digital compass, Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth® 3.0 + EDR / Wi-Fi®: IEEE 802.11b/g/n / 3.5 mm stereo audio jack / Standard micro-USB
  • Camera: 5 megapixel camera, LED flash
  • Battery: Li-ion battery 1500 mAh
  • Weight: 145 grams with battery
  • Dimensions: (LxWxT): 129 x 65,9 x 9,9 mm

I know the single-core MTK processo may not sound like much, but it was more than snappy in that counterfeit Galaxy S3 video we showed you last week. The device is currently up for pre-order from the online retailer Expansys and is looking to launch next month.

Verizon LG Optimus Vu Images Leaked – More Confirmation of the Phoneblet’s Impending Launch

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 05:31 PM PDT

LG and Verizon have had a pretty good relationship when it comes to the Big Red pushing their devices on their network. Given Verizon has yet to launch the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note (aka Galaxy “Journal”), it looks like LG is moving in for the kill, beating their South Korean rivals to the punch with their own 5.3 “phablet” (I prefer the term “phoneblet”). Images of the LG Optimus Vu with Verizon branding were leaked today, which didn’t come as much of surprise seeing how the phone was recently revealed in an FCC filing late last month.

Everything here is pretty much what we’ve seen from the Vu at Mobile World Congress 2012. The Vu’s claim to fame is its 5-inch 720p-ish IPS display which, may not sound too big to you, but keep in mind that’s a diagonal measurement of a phone with a 4:3 aspect ratio. What that means is you’re looking at a screen with an almost perfectly square display, making it look huge when compared to the long, rectangular 16:9 aspect ratio displays we’re currently used to. Inside the device is said to pack a Qualcomm S4 processor (with regular Adreno 220 GPU), 1GB of RAM, 8MP camera and comes running on LG’s new UI with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich underneath.

Overall, I’d say the device is pretty sexy and sure to turn a few heads when on display next to the rest of Verizon’s Android lineup. A bit awkward, yes, but still interesting and powerful enough to handle all the media, apps and web browsing you can throw at it. I guess the real question is whether or not you’ll buy it with the Galaxy Note 2 launching later this year…

Sprint has officially released more details on the software upgrades coming to the HTC EVO 3D and the HTC EVO Design 4G. Both devices will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich come early August according to the Now Network.

It’s not Jelly Bean (and we’re not sure if that’ll ever be placed on the roadmap) but at least it’s a lot more modern than Gingerbread. By the way, have you seen the new /r/Android?

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 02:19 PM PDT

For those of you who frequent Reddit but haven’t been to /r/Android in the past week or so, listen up: it’s gotten a brand new redesign. While the old /r/Android had minor theme work done to it (green hues and an Android logo), the redesigned sub-reddit now mimics the Ice Cream Sandwich/Jelly Bean user interface in things like tabs, the settings/preferences button, and more. Now if only we could get Reddit to make an actual Android application… [/r/Android]

Instagram for Android adds Nexus 7 support, Flickr sharing

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 01:07 PM PDT

It was once believed that Instagram for Android wouldn’t be avialable for the Nexus 7 due to absence of a rear camera on the device. After all, what good is a photo app on a device that doesn’t have a main camera? Fortunately, the folks at Instagram realized that a front-facing camera was still a camera, and that the device should be supported for those who are into self-portraits. Instagram also has the ability to share photos to Flickr, functionality I’m sure many people won’t mind having. Get on over to the Google Play Store and grab the 13MB download.

T-Mobile confirms the Galaxy Note will be headed to its shelves

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 11:54 AM PDT

T-Mobile has confirmed the longstanding rumors of the Samsung Galaxy Note being bound for its store shelves. After months of rumors they broke the news via Twitter, and with 140 characters comes the unfortunate limitation of details: no date or pricing was given along with news that it’s coming.

Not even a generic “in the coming weeks” estimate. But it’s nice to know they’ll finally be getting the 5.3 inch device even if it does seem a bit too late to the party. Anyone checking up on this or are you going to go with Samsung’s other hot option instead?

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises for Android launching July 20th

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 11:22 AM PDT

Earlier this summer we learned that Batman and his raspy voice would be soaring to the Google Play Store. Batman: The Dark Knight Rises will come to Android July 20th and coincides with the official opening of the film in theaters.

Despite thousands of people already seeing the film in screening we’re sure there are tons who decided not to spoil themselves if they were unable to get to one of those screenings. That said, we’re not sure if the game itself is a spoiler but it’s probably best to hold off until after you watch the film.

But if you find yourself craving the bat come July 20th then you’re free to dig in. We’re guessing it’ll cost somewhere between $5 and $10, but no details have been given on pricing just yet. Check out the trailer for the mobile game above.

Nexus 7 receives minor OTA update

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 10:54 AM PDT

It’s not uncommon to see an OTA update roll out to a device before or on the day of its launch (or within a few days of its launch either way). The Nexus 7 is no exception as it appears a minor OTA update is rolling out to users. Build JRO03D doesn’t seem to do much to change the experience.

Aside from a more fleshed out About Tablet screen it appears to be some uneventful update. There may be more things under the hood, of course, but there’s no telling what those changes are, and because we tend to trust Google to never inject malicious code into their own software we can’t say we’re not grateful.

Some users are already having fun with their tablets as it began shipping to pre-orderers late last week. As the week moves on more of you should be just as privileged to have the device as anyone. Be sure to hit up the Nexus 7 section at AndroidForums.com to discuss everything about the device, including this OTA. [via IntoMobile]

Sprint officially flips the switch on 4G LTE in 15 cities spanning Georgia, Texas, Missouri and Kansas

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 08:06 AM PDT

If you count yourself among the many Sprint users who purchased a 4G LTE handset in advance of the high-speed network’s official launch, today you can realize the full potential of your device. Sprint has activated their next-gen coverage in 15 cities spanning four states, extending from initial pilot markets of Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, and San Antonio. At the moment only folks residing in Georgia, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas have the pleasure of experiencing data speeds in the range of 6-8Mbps for downloads and 2-3Mbps for uploads, with more regions promised by the end of 2012.

Much to the dismay of residents like myself, Sprint has not passed along word of an activation of their network in Baltimore, though the city was listed among the initial lineup when the carrier unveiled its plans to rollout their LTE network. Check out the press release below for a full list of new 4G markets.

Sprint 4G LTE Launch Extends to 15 Cities Throughout Portions of Georgia, Kansas, Missouri and Texas
The all-new, high-speed data network rollout - known as Network Vision - spreads to communities surrounding Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio and is also now available in Waco, Texas

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. Sprint plans to launch additional 4G LTE markets in the second half of 2012, which will be announced later this year. By the end of 2013, Sprint expects to have largely completed the build out of its all-new 4G LTE nationwide network - with an all-new enhanced 3G network - covering 250 million people across the United States.

Network Vision Means an All-New 3G & 4G Network

To better meet the growing voice and data demands of wireless customers, Sprint is building an all-new, nationwide 3G and 4G LTE network through the Network Vision program. Whether a Sprint customer is using a smartphone to share a picture or to check the Web, Sprint 4G LTE will make it faster.

Coupling the speed of 4G LTE with the industry’s only truly unlimited data plan for smartphones makes Sprint the best choice in wireless.* Additionally, the new network will provide significant enhancements to Sprint 3G service once the improvements are completed.

Customers are expected to experience better signal strength, fewer dropped/blocked calls, faster data speeds, expanded coverage and better overall performance as the improvements roll out across the country. Sprint has a history of innovation, as it was the first national wireless carrier to offer 4G service with the launch of the Sprint 4G (WiMAX) network in 2008.

The launch of these 15 cities demonstrates the continued commitment by Sprint to invest in its network through Network Vision. For the most up-to-date details on Sprint’s 4G LTE portfolio and rollout, please visit www.sprint.com/4GLTE.

HTC One V update enables Media Link HD compatibility

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 07:14 AM PDT

A new update is available for HTC One V owners in the UK that will enable support for the HTC Media Link HD, a wireless media streaming box that was launched concurrently with the company’s One Series devices. The 46.77MB update brings the One V’s software version to 2.08.401.2 and enables the ability to stream HD content from the One V to a larger display, such as an HD television. To check if your device is eligible for the new software, a system update check can be performed under the Settings menu of the phone. There is no word on how widespread this release is, but it should spread to other areas soon.

New update in testing for Motorola XOOM WiFi, timing hints at Jelly Bean release

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 06:34 AM PDT

Motorola is petitioning members of their Feedback Network to take part in a software upgrade test for the WiFi edition of their XOOM tablet, an event that all the more worth noting given its proximity to the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update Google promised during the I/O keynote presentation. The Motorola XOOM was listed alongside the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S as the first group of devices to receive the updated Android OS. With an delivery timeframe of July, there is reason to believe this may be the software upgrade Moto is currently seeking to test.

If this round of testing does indeed signal the beginning of the Jelly Bean update process for the XOOM it will fall in line as the second tablet to officially feature the latest version of Android, and the first to do so in a 10.1-inch form factor. This will presumably also make it the first device to feature a landscape orientation as the default presentation. Once the update is approved the process shouldn’t take too long. As a WiFi-only device there is no carrier partner to do any meddling.

Verizon’s Galaxy S3 Developer Edition shows up as ‘coming soon’ on Samsung’s site

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 05:30 AM PDT

How much is an unlocked bootloader worth to you? That’s the questions you will have to ask yourself as you behold the landing page for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Developer Edition for Verizon, which looks to set you back at least $599. The site appeared online over the weekend and features the ever popular “coming soon” tag but few other details aside from the rundown of standard Galaxy S3 specs.

For one reason or another, Verizon’s subsidized edition of the Galaxy S3 has been set up in a manner that is not so friendly to outside development and Samsung promised to provide the Developer Edition to meet the needs of hardcore users. The choice now is between purchasing the special edition of the phone at full price or waiting for a possible unlock tool, whether it be through official or unofficial means. There have been some whispers that Samsung will provide such a software tool in the future, but these remain unconfirmed.

Now Available: Motorola Atrix HD for AT&T

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 05:12 AM PDT

If you want a great deal on a new Android device, you might look no further than the Motorola Atrix HD. Available as of the weekend over on AT&T’s website and in stores, the phone features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.5-inch HD display, and 8MP camera. It runs Android 4.0, which may no longer be the latest version of the operating system, but it provides a clear path for an upgrade to Jelly Bean. The original Motorola Atrix was AT&T’s first 4G LTE device, and the Atrix HD continues the trend. Considering what you get for half the price of a phone like the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Atrix HD is well worth your consideration.
