Galaxy S III to come in more colour options, Quad-Core version coming soon to U.S?

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 02:59 PM PDT

Few days ago, AT&T officially and exclusively started taking pre-orders for the beautiful Garnet Red Samsung Galaxy S III, but according to Pocket-Lint, Samsung is looking forward to launch Galaxy S III in more colours. They were told by a Samsung's spokesperson that "We will be announcing potential colour variants in due course," which means sooner or later, we might see a Galaxy S III in a new colour.

But that's not all, there's another good news which is telling us about the quad-core Galaxy S III. It's a known fact that the international Galaxy S III is a quad-core, however the U.S variants are dual-core, thanks to 4G/LTE. But that doesn't mean States will never see the face of quad-core Galaxy S III. According to a leaked shot of BestBuy computer screen, which is showing order details of the Samsung Galaxy S III i9300, BestBuy is stocking the pebble blue version of the international version of Samsung Galaxy S III. The listed price is $799.99, which is somehow going to bring an earthquake in your wallet.

Well, I just hope to hear some official words from BestBuy, till then just take it with a grain of salt. But if BestBuy officially launches it, are you planning to buy it for a hefty price tag? Tell us in the comment box below.

Developer gives update, Carbon twitter app is coming for free in premium flavor

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 02:19 PM PDT

If you don't already know, the Google Play Store doesn't allow ALL countries from around the world the ability to publish paid applications. Carbon was waiting for this year's Google I/O to see if all that changed, which it didn't. So they decided to... well, read it for yourself:

So, we finally decided to make it a free app. Yep, a premium free app. No Ads(we believe that Ads cripple the experience no matter how efficiently done, it's just wrong on an app that users use all day long). Going free, doesn't mean watering the app down, but a mean to get the app that we've been working on for a long time, designs that went through endless iterations and tweaking to be experienced out there by our eager friends who've been waiting for months.

Yep, so that means we will be getting a Free, but PREMIUM twitter client for Android! They are not putting ads in the app, nor watering it down (like they said). Simply just a Free, amazing Twitter client. The app has been in private testing for weeks now, so it should be bug free by the time we get it!

The app will be released on July 22nd.

I am so excited for this new release! How about you? Leave your questions or comments below.

Meizu MX 4-core is now available globally

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 01:41 PM PDT

The original (dual-core) Meizu MX is one of the most popular smartphones in China. Shortly after the launch there, it was quietly made available around the world from various retailers. Later, after the huge success of the MX, Meizu announced a quad-core version, the MX 4-core. For a time, the MX 4-core was only available in China, much like its predecessor.

Well, the MX 4-Core is now available for purchase globally. Unfortunately for some, it's only available in 32GB and 64GB model, with hefty price tags of $650 and $750, respectively. Granted, the device is running a quad-core Cortex A9 processor, with ICS and a nice 8MP camera. Do those specs make the device worth $650-$750? We'll leave such judgments up to you. If you do feel like shelling out the cash for a Meizu MX 4-core, you can find one on Amazon.

In the meantime, do you think the price is too steep? Would you buy this phone? Drop a comment below!

HTC Vertex tablet showed up in benchmarks, Tegra 3 under the hood

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT

We recently reported that HTC is planning to come out with a new Android phone which will feature a 1.7 GHz Quad-Core processor, and also there is word on the street that HTC will make a comeback in the tablet market by launching a tablet with a "unique" factor. Now a tablet known as HTC Vertex, showed up at two separate benchmark tests site and with some hardcore stuff under the hood, this is probably the "unique" tablet we heard about before.

On the time of the benchmark, the tablet was spotted with a Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and it's running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. According to latest reports and rumors, it will feature a 10.1 inch display with resolution of 1280x786, and it will be only 9mm thick. Most probably, there will be a 2MP camera on the back, and a 1.3MP on front for video chatting. And of course it will support Beats Audio.

No words on the launch of this tablet, but hopefully HTC will be launching it later this year. Are you looking forward to HTC's upcoming tablet? Tell us what do you think about this in the comment box below.

HTC cancels ICS update for Desire HD, blames “poor device performance”

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 12:29 PM PDT

HTC may be stepping on a few toes with this one, but Telus Canada has just released a document, that shows the Desire HD ICS update has been cancelled. The only reason that's given was that

HTC has cancelled the HTC Desire HD ICS upgrade due to poor device performance during testing.

Of course, we can't say that this comes as a huge surprise, since the device is running a single-core 1GHz processor along with HTC's infamously choppy Sense UI. It's one thing to get Sense and ICS running on something like a Sensation 4G, but it appears that the Desire HD just couldn't keep up with the devices of today.

So now that we know the Desire HD won't be getting any 4.0 love, is anyone planning to upgrade? Who's disappointed by this decision? Sound off in the comments!

T-Mobile officially confirms Galaxy Note, more details in coming weeks

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 11:59 AM PDT

We are hearing it from a long time that T-Mobile will be launching the Samsung Galaxy Note and the latest news was that it will be launched on August 8. We also saw some press images of it which made us believe that it's really headed to T-Mobile. Now after all the leaks and rumors, T-Mobile finally let the cat of the bag by announcing it on Twitter that " We are excited to confirm the Samsung Galaxy Note will be coming to T-Mobile! More info to come."

Though that's all we know right now, and hopefully more will be confirmed in the coming weeks, that's what T-Mobile told Engadget. Galaxy Note is almost a year old device, and we all know that Samsung will be launching the Samsung Galaxy Note II soon, so all I got to say is that launching it now is not the best move, but if T-Mobile is planning to launch it with a low price tag e.g. below $100 then I think it would be a fair deal.

Anyway, tell us what do you think. Would you like to wait for the Galaxy Note II or you are planning to grab T-Mo Note? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

Nielsen has published a report on U.S. smartphones and their operating system. Of course, Android is in the lead, running on 51.8% of all smartphones. iOS came in second with 34.8%, which is a 17.5% difference between the two. It's interesting that Android and iOS combined make up for over 85% of the entire smartphone market, as RIM and "others" come in at a cool 14%

Android shows no signs of slowing down on this growth with the past 3 month's 54.6% of people have purchased there smartphone with Android on it!

Verizon says Galaxy SIII bootloader will be unlocked via OTA update [UPDATED: FALSE]

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 06:20 AM PDT

EDIT: It turns out that Verizon customer service was misinformed, and the bootloaders will NOT be unlocked via an OTA (or any other) update. The OTA update mentioned is for the GSM Radio on the device. The bootloader is to remain locked, and the developer version will continue to be the only unlocking option. via droid-life

Yes, you did just read that correctly! After all that stress, and the tweets blaming Samsung, Samsung came out with a developer edition of the Galaxy S III for Verizon Wireless customers wanting that unlocked bootloader. Now, Verizon is saying that the GSIII's bootloader will be unlocked in an OTA update. I feel really bad for anyone who already purchased that developer edition with that hefty price tag!

Friday, a customer received an email from Verizon Wireless Support:

My name is Levar and thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless about the boot loader for the Galaxy S3. I know this may be frustrating but there will be a solution soon coming. Samsung will be releasing a software update to unlock your device. Right now, we do not have a date for the release but it shall be soon.

Verizon Wireless appreciates you as a customer and your patience in this matter.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Levar
Verizon Wireless
Customer Service

Kellex from Droid-life.com went in to the Verizon Support Chat on the VZ website, and this is the response:

And last but not least an email response from Samsung:

Even thought this isn't official, what do you think about it? Did they not like the idea of the developer edition? Is a refund of developer edition SIII's in order? How long do you think it will be before we do see that OTA update? Let us know in the comments.

CyanogenMod 9 running on the Nexus Q [video]

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 04:57 AM PDT

The Nexus Q has been slated by Google as a "developer's media device" since it's inception at Google I/O. In the same vein, is there anything that screams "developer" like CyanogenMod? Well, put the two together, and here's what you get.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Jason Parker has made a build of CM9 that runs on the Nexus Q. He started with a Galaxy Nexus base, and now has a bootable ROM... complete with bluetooth and wifi working. While it's not ready for the public yet, it's still pretty cool.

Get the Jelly Bean keyboard for your ICS device running 4.0.3 or higher

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 04:47 AM PDT

If you're running ICS, at least version 4.0.3, on your Android device, then you should really check this out. A developer by the name of "Beansoft" has released a beta port of the Jelly Bean keyboard - and its prediction engine - that runs on Android 4.0.3 and above. According to the app in the Play Store, here are some details:

Limitations
* Full next word prediction and auto correction of missing spaces only supported for English. (Normal word prediction/correction and bigram prediction is working for all other supported languages though)
* Only English, German, French, Spanish, Portugese (Brazil) and Russian supported
* FC issue on some devices when adding a word to the user dictionary

-------
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The installation procedure consists of 2(!) steps.

In the "language and input" settings of the general Android settings:
1. Check "Jelly keyboard" or "Rapid Keyboard" (for the new version)
2. Select "Jelly Bean keyboard" (or "Rapid Keyboard" for the new version) as your new default input method in the "Default" option (Alternatively, you can select the keyboard icon in your notification bar and switch to the keyboard. Note that the keyboard icon only shows up when a input method is active)

In other words, you're looking at a standard installation of a new keyboard. I personally downloaded this keyboard and have been using it for the last 24 hours, and the prediction engine is amazing, and can easily compete with the best of them.

Hit the source link below to check it out for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Sprint users, it's time to rejoice! I'd be dancing in the streets if I didn't mind getting stared at / hit by cars / arrested for indecent exposure (wait, what?), because Sprint has finally rolled out their 4G LTE network.

The rollout has happened in Kansas City, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston (Whoop whoop!), and Atlanta. Many Sprint users have been reporting LTE off and on for the past couple days, but now the LTE lights are officially on.

If you're a Sprint user in any of these markets and have an LTE device such as the Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S III, or HTC EVO 4G LTE, be sure to let us know how your data is below!

AT&T: Family Data Plans Ready to Roll Out?

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 04:29 AM PDT

Heads up all you AT&T users! The screenshot above shows "Group Data" usage, so does this mean we will be getting that new Family Data Plan?

Back in May, Ralph de la Vega, CEO of AT&T Mobile, said:

"The company has a firm hold on what type of plan it will offer and intends to offer one soon. I'm very comfortable with the plan that will be offered to our customers."

So, hopefully in the next few days, AT&T customers will be having some new data plan choices. What are your thoughts on a shared data plan? Do you think it will cheaper than Verizon's Share Everything plan? Let us now in the comments below!
