Matrix One 7″ tablet review

Click here to view the embedded video.

We recently had the pleasure of spending the weekend with the Matrix One tablet and documented our experience for your consideration. While it may not be the most glamorous or luxurious tablet on the market, at $149 some shortcomings can be quickly forgiven. We spoke with Vice President of North American Retail Distribution, Raymond Pelosi, who informed us that retailers should have an opportunity to get their hands on this unit within the next few weeks. We find this to be an interesting alternative to some of the "big boy" brands, at an economic price point. Will you consider this as an additional tablet in your household? Let us know your thoughts.

This was my first opportunity to use the Antec Advance screen-cleaning spray on a device other than the Galaxy SIII or Galaxy Tab, and my opinion stands : this stuff is great! Grab a bottle, if you get the chance.

(Please forgive the sub-par video quality. We began shooting on our Galaxy SIII and dropped it! We quickly switched over to a backup Creative Vado, which left the image a bit hazy.)

For device specs and company contact information, please see below:

Six months ago, this tablet would have stood a little higher in a crowd, however the Nexus 7 is only $50 more and is easily worth the money. We like to root for the little guys whenever possible, but it's getting harder now that there are Tegra 3 devices with full Google Play support at a similar price range.  On the other hand, this one does have microSD, USB,  and HDMI output.

Which way would you go?

comScore: Android inches to 50.9 percent U.S. market share

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 10:39 AM PDT

Samsung continues to lead all smartphone manufacturers and Android is still the king of the mobile landscape, according to the latest comScore report.  Inching up .8 percent over the previous quarter, Android now commands 50.9 percent of the U.S. smartphone market.  Apple, for its part, grew 1.8 percent to arrive at 31.9 percent overall and far ahead of third place RIM (11.4 percent).

The comScore report pulled in data from the three-month average period ending in May and accounts for 234 million Americans age 13 and older.  They found that there are now nearly 110 million people using smartphones, up 5 percent versus the February time frame.

In terms of vendors, Samsung has a 25.7 percent share of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG who owns 19.1 percent share. Apple ranks third at 15.0 percent, followed by Motorola with 12.0 percent and HTC with 6.1 percent.

Amazon’s Flow blends barcode scanning, QR codes, and augmented reality shopping

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 08:53 AM PDT

Amazon subsidiary A9.com today announced that they've released Flow for Android.  Blending barcode scanning with augmented reality, the app lets shoppers scan common items such as DVDs, CDs, video games, and toys and see product details, pricing, and more.  While it's not the first or only barcode scanning app available for Android, it's much more fun than simply handing things off to a Google search.

The future is rife with possibilities for Flow on Android.  Next time you're reading a magazine, why not scan a page to launch a website?  Instead of looking at that movie poster, scan it to watch a trailer. The Android version of the app allows for QR code reading, something yet to make its way into the iOS counterpart.

With Flow customers can explore, discover and receive detailed information on products by simply pointing their Android phone towards any desired product with a UPC barcode or including, books, toys, video games and millions more. Upon visual recognition of the item, the app overlays Amazon.com product information, including pricing, availability and the option to play multimedia content or even read customer reviews.

In addition to letting customers learn more about products, the new QR code support also offers access to many forms of other content, from opening websites, connecting to WiFi networks, or adding contacts to their address book.

Flow is available for free in both the Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore.

Samsung GT-B5330 to be Android 4.0-powered portrait QWERTY

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 08:11 AM PDT

A new Samsung handset has landed on our radar which looks to feature Android 4.0 and a portrait-style QWERTY keyboard.  Tied to a GT-B5330 model number, it's a design we don't expect to see arrive on any major U.S. carrier.  According to details found on a Chinese certification website, the GT-B5330 will presumably come in with a very low price point as it features 3G connectivity, a 320x240 QVGA display, and CPU in the range of 850MHz.  No whispers on pricing or availability as of yet but we cannot imagine it being all that far off.

Sony rumored to refresh Xperia S with Xperia SL

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 07:21 AM PDT

A Sony Xperia SL has been spotted online, hinting at a refreshed version of the Xperia S for later in the year.  Bearing a LT26ii model number, it is strikingly similar to the LT26i that accompanies the Xperia S.  Thus far the details are still a mystery however we suspect a chief difference will be in the form of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preloaded.

The Xperia S was, and still is, a very powerful device, with feature such as a 4.3-inch (1280x720) display, 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, and 12.1-megapixel camera.  We wouldn't mind 2GB RAM for the Xperia SL nor would we turn our nose at a little quad-core action either.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note reportedly pushed to August 8

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 06:06 AM PDT

The T-Mobile version of the Samsung Galaxy Note has been pushed back to August 8, according to details on TmoNews.  Initially rumored with a July 11 arrival, there's no indication as to what might be the cause of the nearly month-long delay.  It will be interesting to see what happens on this front come fall for T-Mobile, especially as details of a Galaxy Note II have started surfacing.  The successor to this year's tablet/phone hybrid is currently tied to September launch, only weeks after the carrier is expected to get the Galaxy Note.  Of course, that could just be the international version... We'll see soon enough, eh?

Adobe will not support Flash for Jelly Bean Devices, ends Flash for Android completely on August 15

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:25 AM PDT

We Android users have had the advantage of using flash on our devices for a very long time. However, Adobe has come out and announced two things. First off, they will not be supporting Flash on any Jelly Bean devices, which brings us to the second announcement: Installs of Flash for Android will end completely on August 15th.

On Adobe's website, they wrote:

"We will use the configuration settings in the Google Play Store to limit continued access to Flash Player updates to only those devices that have Flash Player already installed. Devices that do not have Flash Player already installed are increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store after August 15th."

Adobe will, however, continue to develop Flash on PCs. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

GameStop to carry the Nexus 7, now taking preorders

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:00 AM PDT

I'll say this of GameStop: they've done an excellent job of seeing the writing on the wall regarding the future of gaming and adapting their sales structure accordingly. Recognizing the growing trend of mobile gaming and then carrying the products that play those games was a smart move. In that vein, the company has announced that they'll be carrying Google's new Nexus 7 tablet and they've got the device up for pre-order, though the only one I saw was the 16 GB version for $249.99. While I would personally rather get it from Google at the source, it's great to see that there's going to be plenty of mainstream purchase options to get the device into as many hands as possible. Remember, more market share equals more development!

Hit up the link below to preorder your Nexus 7 from GameStop, and let us know in the comments: Have you already ordered your Nexus 7 and if not, are you planning on getting one?
