Featured Play Store Review: Mental Math – Multiplication Table [Education]

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 02:04 PM PDT

This one is for your child who might be learning multiplication. It’s a very simple game that is very Tetris-like, but it’s strictly about multiplication. I always loved math when I was a child, but it was boring just doing the calculations in assignment form from school. With Mental Math you get a simple game that’s not too complicated to entice any child to further increase their skills.

Overall, there are 11 levels of play and 5 speeds within each level. The game consists of bars falling from the top. Each bar consists of a multiplication problem and all you need to do is enter the answer before it gets to the bottom.  Now you’re only given one chance to get the answer correct. If you do, the bar disappears and the next bar starts. If you get it wrong, it falls to the bottom creating a “construction.” This is what I meant by it being Tetris-like.

The playing field has enough room for about 4 columns of bars (depending on how big each problem is) and 12 rows of contruction. If one of the pieces makes it to the bottom, the next bar will begin one column to the left and so on. If the construction reaches the top, the game is over, but you can avenge yourself from your past mistakes. If you get 5 correct answers in a row, a bomb will drop taking out one bar. If you answer 10 correctly in a row, you get a super bomb which takes out one complete row of the construction.

For each level there are 50 problems or bars with a total of 10 problems for each of the 5 speeds. You get 5 points for each right answer for speed 1, 10 points for each right answer for speed 2, and so on. Starting at the 1st level, players are ranked from preschooler to mathemagician.

The game is very simple to play and anyone can pick it up, even if you don’t understand the Tetris-like aspect of it. It starts out at a reasonable pace and of course things get quick in a hurry. I can’t find anything negative about it other than when entering a 2 digit number, and you inadvertently hit the wrong number for the first digit, there is no back key. This means you will definitely lose that bar even though you really knew the correct answer. The developer, InterGraphic, LLC,  said they will fix that with the next release. Either way, this adds to the “game” element.

Mental Math – Multiplication Table costs $1.99, but there is a free version to try, which consists of the first 3 levels. If you have a child, or even if you want to better your multiplication skills, download the free version to see what it’s all about. After that you can upgrade to get the full impact. Also, if you’re wondering about addition and/or subtraction, InterGraphics has those versions of this same game available in the Play Store as well. Just hit any of the download links to get started.

Ice Cream Sandwich update hits HTC Incredible S

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 01:06 PM PDT

The Android faithful may be licking their lips at the prospect of an incoming Jelly Bean update however it’s easy to forget the fact the many of your fellow fans are still patiently waiting for a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich. One such peer group are owners of HTC‘s Incredible S which, despite residing in HTC’s list of phones scheduled for the ICS update, remains on Gingerbread… until now. The good news is that the Incredible S will be jumping straight to version 4.0.4, the latest and greatest version of ICS. Better still, the update is rolling out right now.

Google’s issues with manufacturers and their upgrade schedules are well documented and the unsuccessful Android Update Alliance did nothing to address the concerns. Still I’m sure owners of the Incredible will agree that it’s better late than never. Here’s hoping that the top Android manufacturers are already preparing Jelly Bean and we can all enjoy a more timely update this time round.

If your Incredible S update hasn’t landed in your notification bar just yet it might be time to hit the ‘check for updates’ button in the settings menu. Enjoy!

Let The Modding Begin, Nexus 7 Factory JB 4.1 OS Image Released By Google

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 12:56 PM PDT

Google knows the importance of the factory OS image for Android power users and developers, plus it’s as a safe heaven in case any unforeseen issues arise. They have made it a policy to release the factory images for all Nexus devices, and the Nexus 7 has just joined the list in a very timely fashion, especially since the device has yet to see retail availability. Attendees of Google I/O last week received a special developer edition of the tablet along with other goodies in their gift bag.

The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS image can be used to return the device to stock should you brick the device when flashing ROMs or if you’re stuck in a boot loop from changing settings. It is also the best place for developers to begin making custom ROMs and tweaks to enhance the user experience. If you’re in need, the image is available for download now from the source link below.

Do you use your smartphone to make phone calls?

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 12:22 PM PDT

At first glance the question in the title might seem a touch odd however I challenge you to check out your most used applications over the course of a week and you may just be surprised. It’s ironic that in this day and age the phone in your smart phone isn’t high up the list of priorities for most people.  A recent study conducted in the UK by The Telegraph newspaper and mobile operator O2 suggests that making calls is actually as low as the 5th most used application for the average person. The study also finds that the average smartphone user will use their phone for up to 2 hours each day with web browsing, social media, gaming and music taking up the majority of that time.

Check out the info-graph below and let us know what applications you most commonly use in an average day.

Google and Samsung have a ‘game plan’ that will eventually lead to a cross-licensing deal with Apple

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 10:18 AM PDT

The ongoing feud between Samsung and Apple needs to be resolved so we can just get on with our lives. The latest has Apple winning a preliminary injunction against Samsung for the Galaxy Nexus and the older Galaxy Tab. Now we are hearing reports that Google and Samsung have a “game plan” that will most likely lead to a cross licensing deal with Apple.

The Korean Times was able to get a quote from one Samsung source saying, "It's too early to comment on our game plan (with Google) in the legal battle; but we will do our best to get more royalties from Apple, which has benefited from our technology. The fight is becoming more dramatic and the possibility of a truce in the form of a cross-licensing deal, seems to be becoming likely."

It’s also possible Google may team up with HTC for a similar “game plan.” Obvious since Google now owns Motorola, that arrangement is already built in. I think we are finally starting to see the benefits from the Motorola acquisition.

Meanwhile, the court battles won’t slow down as Samsung appealed the Galaxy Nexus decision.

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 10:03 AM PDT

It’s way overdue, but Verizon finally announced the DROID Incredible 4G LTE will be available on July 5th for $149. All I can say is, “What could’ve been.” How this isn’t the One X or at least a variant, I have no idea. I would have even taken a One S. How and why this happened just doesn’t make sense, but it is what it is.

Full specs:

  • 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, LED flash, BSI, f/2.2 and 28 mm lens

Jelly Bean ROM now available for Acer Iconia A500

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 09:32 AM PDT

As we've seen over the last few days, folks are hard at work creating Jelly Bean ROMs for a variety of devices. Up to this point, work seems to be limited to smartphones or Nexus tablets. That appears to have changed with some work done by user randomblame over at XDA. He has succeeded in creating an SDK port of Jelly Bean for an Acer Iconia A500. It is not yet ready for daily use as several items are still not functioning, including audio, wifi, sdcard access, and usb mounting of flash drives. While work continues on those issues, users can at least get a taste of Jelly Bean if they are willing to root their device and install the ROM. Hit the source link for instructions and access to the files.

Pantech Announces The Vega S5 Smartphone, Aims To Go Toe-To-Toe With The Galaxy S III

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 07:03 AM PDT

Pantech is no stranger when it comes to one-upping Samsung— and so it comes that a Galaxy S III challenger makes its way to news. Pantech has announced its Vega S5 flagship smartphone. This LTE-enabled device features a 5-inch screen, Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 dual-core processor, 1280 x 720 display, a whopping 13MP camera and ICS. Oh and in case you think the 5-inch display is massive, keep in mind that Pantech highlights the Vega S5 will feature a “zero bezel” technology which aims to make the device narrower than the Galaxy S III, while still maintaining a fairly thin profile.

While the device looks to talk the talk and walk the walk, there are two items going against it at this time. First, the premium features of the device will also come with a premium price: it’s set to cost 900K Won (approximately $800 dollars). The second thing to note is the fact it will only be available in Korean markets— specifically on SK Telecom’s network. Those of us outside of Korea will have to be green with envy in the meantime or hope that Pantech will eventually come to its senses and release the Vega S5 or something similar in the near-future. If you’re reading this Pantech, believe us— there are lots of folks interested in this type of device.
