Let us not forget that there are more than two apps available this election year -- the Gary Johnson 2012 app is now available for download in the Google Play Store. Whether you already know former New Mexico Governor Johnson's platform or have never heard of him, the app has a lot of great information available. You can see his live event schedule, read his updates from social networks, share with your friends and get links to all of his campaign resources. The app is free and available now, so hit up the Google Play Store link above and download it for yourself. A more politically informed voting base is always a good thing.

It's been about a month since we saw Motorola rolling out the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Wifi only version of the XYBOARD, and now we see that Verizon has posted the changes and instructions for the LTE version's update. In addition to the changes and security enhancements that come with ICS, Verizon lists the following benefits of the update:

Despite being somewhat overshadowed by the Jelly Bean toting Samsung Galaxy Camera, we shouldn't forget about the Nikon Coolpix S800c. Having been announced prior to IFA 2012 where we first saw the Galaxy Camera, all fell quiet ahead of an expected late September release. It's now late September, and we're starting to see some of the first retailers with stocks of the camera. One of the earliest U.S. retailers to announce pre-orders for the S800c, B+H Photo Video, let us know today that our camera has shipped. Down under, in Australia, the S800c is showing up in stock at CameraCity for AU$399 plus delivery and is available in black or white. According to the guys at Ausdroid, no local retailers are showing the device in stock, but some are showing up in retailers systems to place orders for. Considering the expected price for the Galaxy Camera, the Nikon could be a bit of a steal. The Galaxy Camera offers more on the Android front, that goes without saying, with the Nikon languishing on Gingerbread. But, we should remember this is supposed to be a camera first and foremost, and it's really this end of the device that matters the most. I've been ranting about this all week, so I'm taking a few minutes to blog about it here. Hopefully it does a little bit of good. By now, everyone knows that OMG clicking a link can maybe reset your Samsung phone and erase all your data!!!11!! Unfortunately, it's true for a good many phones out there, including about a jillion Galaxy S2 models. Like mine. While I'm the first to say that OEMs need to get off their ass and patch the phone of every user in the world that still has a contract or is under warranty, I also know that in the end, it's us -- the users -- that are responsible for our own security. For some, like me and many of you, that means getting out the data cable, giving the OEM and their jacked version of Android the finger and flashing a custom ROM that fixes bugs and exploits. There are plenty of AOSP builds already made for my Galaxy S2, and I'll be flashing at least one of them this evening. But some of us can't (or just don't want to) hack things up and deal with different bugs on unofficial firmware. That's cool, too. Not everyone is Here's a quick and dirty suggestion that will cut down on over 9,000-percent (totally made up figure) of exploits.

| Texas Instruments not leaving mobile after all Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:38 PM PDT
There was some talk that Texas Instruments would be getting out of the mobile game a few days ago, but a TI rep has clarified the company's position just a bit. Mobile is still in the picture, but they're looking to make their products suitable for automotive, industrial, enterprise communication, vision, and robotics fields as well. TI also reported that the first OMAP 5 consumer products should be hitting shelves in early 2013. It's good to hear that TI isn't completely abandoning mobile, even if it means they won't be focusing on it in as specifically as before. I've seen some really impressive OMAP tech demos at TI's booth at the last two Mobile World Congress events, and it would be a shame to lose out on that innovation and see it head towards other sectors. On the other hand, with Samsung, Apple, Qualcomm, and Nvidia all in the mix, the smartphone and tablet processor market has become quite competitive. OMAP 4 is still at the heart of Amazon tablets and a handful of other devices. Any big OMAP fans out there that are looking forward to version 5? C Spire Wireless, the regional carrier that covers the southeast, is finally getting some Samsung Galaxy S3 (see our review) love. More carrier availability means more S3 users, so this is great news for all of you on C Spire. The S3 comes at a time when C Spire is really pushing their 4G LTE service. It is the second device that can support the higher speeds on the network and they have said they will be aggressively be expanding it this fall. The S3 can be had in either Marble White or Pebble Blue on the 16GB model. It will cost $199 with a 2-year contract online or at any C Spire retail location. A recent Ice Cream Sandwich software update to the Sony Xperia Sola has enabled full use while wearing gloves. The phone's major selling point has always been its Floating Touch sensor, which enables users to interact with the phone without even having to touch the screen. Sony has been touting the gloves-on capability of the Xperia Sola since its announcement back in March, so it's a little confusing why it has taken so long for the feature to go live, but there you have it. Along with the Xperia Sola, Sony has also started rolling out ICS updates for the Xperia Go and Xperia U, which include a few extra features.
Glove Mode is activated depending on how you unlock your phone, so there's minimal manual fiddling back and forth (though there's also a manual toggle if you prefer). The only major difference here is that instead of normal Floating Touch, where hovering over the screen would produce a different set of actions, they're treated as regular, honest-to-goodness screen taps. Those taps also provide visual feedback similar to what's currently available in developer options. It would be nice if icons and UI elements were enlarged to reflect fingers fattened by big mitts, but this is a good start. As a Canadian that has spent more than enough time fiddling with a phone in sub-zero temperatures, this is a pretty sweet feature and easily a selling point for those of us in colder climes. It's not every day that a phone makes you want to put on a suit and tie. And pants. That's one of the perks of this job -- we can review any phone, at any time, and any stage of undress we see fit. And same goes for the Sprint Motorola Photon Q, we suppose. It's a mix of features that business types have been clamoring for on sprint for some time now, with features that any aspiring Android nerd demands. And that's the Photon Q. We'll save you a little trouble here, if you'd like. What Sprint has in the Photon Q is a 4.3-inch display, a killer 5-row keyboard and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. AT&T and Samsung made a hefty joint announcement this morning which includes the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Galaxy Express, and Galaxy Rugby Pro. They don't say anything about pricing or availability for any of these, other than that they'll be landing "in the coming months". That's not particularly helpful, but them's the breaks. At least we're pretty sure that we'll see the Galaxy Note 2 in November. We're already plenty familiar with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy Tab 2, but let's take a closer look at these other two LTE devices, starting from the left. Samsung Galaxy Express

That's some decent mid-range stuff all around. Sure, it's not quite as flashy as the upper-end Galaxy Note 2 and Tab 2 10.1, but it's always nice to have a rugged phone that doesn't entirely suck. Anyone biting on these two, or are you going to hold out for the upper-end devices?

Samsung has announced that their new Galaxy Note 2 will be available a day early (this Sunday) from their officially-branded Samsung store in the U.K. This is good stuff for anyone that happens to leave close to the one in Westfield Stratford City, but no surprise seeing as Samsung did something similar for the Galaxy S 3. The UK Brand Store will also be hosting some competitions on launch day whereby participants have a shot at winning a free Galaxy Note 2. The rest of the UK will proceed to get access to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 through various retail channels on October 1, while those of us in North America will have to wait until November to get our version. We spent some time with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 at IFA and walked away duly impressed. Anyone needing a refresher can take a look at the specs.
I'd be curious to see if any other official Samsung Brand Stores are offering the same promotion. Anyone near the one in the UK intending to check out the launch day festivities this weekend?

| Samsung Galaxy Camera and Galaxy Note 2 to be released in India Posted: 28 Sep 2012 06:58 AM PDT
The star of the recent IFA 2012 show in Berlin, the Samsung Galaxy Camera, has just been outed for release in India. At a recent press event -- where the Galaxy Note 2 was also confirmed for release in the country -- Samsung promised to deliver the Galaxy Camera for release prior to Diwali. While sounding pretty vague, Diwali is to take place this year on November 13, so eager Indian early adopters shouldn't be waiting too long to get their hands on the device. No pricing has been confirmed at this time. The Galaxy Note 2 however, is set for release next week at a price of INR 39,990 (£468, $756) which puts it in the realms of pricing for the European market, perhaps slightly cheaper. Initially the Note 2 will be available from Samsung Smartphone Cafes and Samsung Plazas, with other retailers and carriers offering it at a later date.

The Xperia Tablet S may be the new kid on the block, but Sony hasn't forgotten about the original Tablet S. U.S. owners of the original 'folded magazine' style Tablet S should be starting to see an Android 4.0.3 based update that brings some of the features of the newer tablet. First up is guest mode. For many, the ability to share a single tablet, and restrict access to certain features, apps, as well as having personalizations for each person is a much desired feature. The Xperia Tablet S comes with the feature out of the box, and is sure to be a welcome addition to the Tablet S. Also worth noting is the arrival of the new media applications from Sony. The Walkman, Movies and Album apps have all been updated visually and come packed with some new features. The small apps too gets a boost, with the addition of some extra windows that you're able to overlay. And, widgets can be registered and utilised as small apps too. Handy for popping up your GMail perhaps while playing a little Crash Bandicoot. The OTA update is pushing out now, so if you've yet to see a notification be sure to head into your Settings>About>System Updates to manually check. It's not every day that Apple has to admit one of its own products, well, sucks. (Hell, it's not very often that Apple releases a product that's not at least as good as the alternatives.) But this morning, that's exactly what CEO Tim Cook has done in an open letter on Apple's website. For our purposes, Cook does suggests Google Maps as an alternative, albeit with a web shortcut, since Google's yet to submit a native Google Maps app for iOS. Writes Cook: While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app. We've got the full letter after the break. | Motorola RAZR i to begin shipping in the UK from October 1. Posted: 28 Sep 2012 05:50 AM PDT
Right from launch day we'd heard early October would be the release timeframe for Motorola's new RAZR i. Now, at least one British retailer has narrowed that down further, and confirmed the device will begin shipping on October 1. Clove Technology are set to receive stocks of the device imminently, and have taken to their official blog to confirm that they will be shipping the new Intel powered RAZR i this coming Monday. At £342 we still feel it's a little on the pricey side, but there is a lot to like. It sets the ball rolling in the Motorola/Intel partnership and we're excited to see where things go from here. | Rayman Jungle Run hands on video - this is fun! Posted: 28 Sep 2012 05:20 AM PDT Yay - Rayman has arrived this week for Android. If you are looking for a fun, fast and colorful game then Rayman Jungle Run is well worth considering. It does come with a price tag I'm afraid of $2.99/£1.99 but in the last 24 hours since I have been playing it I would say its money well spent. Rayman has been around for years on other platforms, and hugely successful. I see no reason why that shouldn't continue with the Android platform. With wonderful, catchy background music, bright, smooth and vivid graphics the game is super fun. You guider Rayman through various worlds collecting treats along the way. Each world will give you an extra power so for example in World one you will just be able to jump but once in world two you can jump and fly thanks to the blades on Rayman's head. | Existing Orange T-Mobile customers being transferred over to EE Posted: 28 Sep 2012 04:37 AM PDT
UK mobile customers are eagerly anticipating the first LTE services from the newly announced EE (Everything Everywhere.) While current Orange T-Mobile customers will be required to transfer to an EE LTE plan to take advantage of those extra G's, it seems they're not the only ones seeing a transfer. Existing customers on a regular Orange or T-Mobile contract are also seeing the switchover. It happened to one of our devices following issues with web browsing over cellular data. A quick call to customer services, some settings updates to change over to EE, and we're back online. Something to bear in mind for customers on the two networks if you run into any issues. The Orange representative we spoke to informed us that the changeover is ongoing, so customers should expect to see it soon.

Well, then, what do we have here. At first glance, this is nothing more than a black HTC One X. However, according to the guys over at Pocket-Lint, this is in fact the much rumored HTC One X+. Having been rumored, and leaked, but not yet officially announced, the HTC One X+ is expected to be an upgraded version of the current HTC flagship device. Visually, aside from an updated Beats logo, the One X+ is identical to the regular One X. The difference is supposed to be internal -- a bumped up Tegra 3 and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean the key rumored upgrades. As ever with leaks, we'll hold off full judgment until we see an actual device. We have to say though, we're excited for Jelly Bean on a HTC device. If the rumors are true, it has to bode well for current HTC One X owners eagerly awaiting that update. Source: Pocket-lint

The ZTE Engage, a mid-range Ice Cream Sandwich device, is coming exclusively to Cricket for $249.99 without a contract on Tuesday, October 2nd. The Engage takes advantage of Cricket's new Muve Music service, which lets users choose a plan that has the service built-in to the cost and offers unlimited downloads to the device. For the service, a 4GB MicroSD card is built into the device specifically for the downloads. Overall, the device has specs that you would expect for the price:
There are three plans available for the device -- all without contract. Starting at $50 for unlimited talk, text and 3G data (1GB of full-speed data) per month. A $10 bump to $60 gives you 2.5GB of full-speed data per month, and $70 offers 5GB. Both the $60 and $70 plans include the ability for customers to tether their device to power additional wireless devices.

Google has delivered their Play Movies app and store to the folks in Korea today, bringing hundreds of full-length local and Hollywood movies. It's great seeing Google score more content deals in more countries, as many localities still don't have access to media through Google Play. Korea joins the U.S., UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Spain to offer access to their video rental and sales. There was no word from Google about any plans for other areas. After a brief exclusive period on the Amazon Appstore, Jetpack Joyride is now available for all on Google Play. You can get a full look at the game over at our review, but the tl;dr version goes a little something like this: use one-touch controls to lift a disgruntled office drone into the air with his minigun jetpack, dodge security systems, collect coins, buy cool new gadgets. Rince, repeat. Jetpack Joyride is a classic, and it sure has taken its sweet time finding its way to Android. Who's interested in giving it a shot? Does the gameplay feel dated at all, or has it still retained its charm from a year ago? Are in-app purchases a major turn-off, regardless of gameplay quality?
