In Brief: Other Android stuff worth knowing (Sept 11)

In Brief is a compilation of notifications, rumors, and Android-related news tidbits, which for whatever reason, did not end up with a post of its own on AndroidGuys.  These are things that we still feel are worth knowing, even if in a passing manner.  Consider it a grab-bag of Android goodies.  If you have something that you think is worth a mention on AndroidGuys, be sure to reach out to us via the contact page.

Shoparoo has partnered with Unilever to make it even easier to earn money for schools, now offering double rewards for products like Ragu, Skippy, Country Crock, Knorr, Breyers, Hellmann's, Dove, Axe, Degree, Suave, Vaseline, or Ponds.  Use the free app to snap photos of your receipts from a variety of retailers and  you can help your local school!

The developers of popular game Trial Xtreme, Deemedya m.s. ltd., have a new title coming that features a chubby cat with stolen sausage links.  The endless runner sees players “zipping and leaping across rooftops, tippy-toeing over power lines and dashing along ledges.”  Keep your eyes peeled for.

GAMEVIL’s latest game, Kingdom Royale, is one of those games that will appeal to fans of Lord of the Rings and Final Fantasy.  Details include quests, turn-based gameplay, skills, and strategy.  In other words, this isn’t one you’re going to finish in a few minutes.  Are you a fan of Elves, Humans or Orcs?

Find yourself hauling a big rig back and forth across the country?  Download Truck Stops Pro ($3.99) and locate truck stops, rest areas, weigh stations, CAT scales, Blue Beacon and other potential overnight parking locations.  Sorry, it doesn’t keep Smokey off your six.

Work with a bunch of Microsoft Office documents and need some help while on the go?  Consider Softmaker Office as it promises to do things that other Office-related apps cannot.

Seamlessly reads and writes not only the old Microsoft formats DOC, XLS, and PPT, but provides the same full-fidelity experience with the new formats DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX that have been introduced with Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010.

 

Those of you who need to get your sleep cycles on track are encouraged to check out Azumio’s new app, Sleep Time Alarm Clock.  Available as a free download, the app helps users track, change and improve sleeping behaviors by sensing subtle movements (thanks accelerometer!) while in bed. The app learns your patterns, can trigger your alarm up to 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled time, and wake you at a more appropriate time.  Just ’cause you set the alarm for 6:00AM doesn’t mean your body wouldn’t appreciate getting up at 5:47AM.

HeroCraft debuts its steampunk, fantasy puzzler The Tiny Bang Story

Some of you might have heard this, but HeroCraft recently released its popular PC and Mac game, The Tiny Bang Story, on Android. As a gorgeous blend of steampunk and fantasy, the game offers players over 30 brain teasers and requires that they solve riddles and puzzles.  Why?  Because that is how you are going to get this Utopian world back in order, duh.  If you grew up reading Highlights magazine and often found yourself jumping straight to the hidden pictures page, then this is the game for you.

Dyzplastic previews Series 3 of Android collectibles

Say hello to 8-Ball Huster.  This fella is the first of the upcoming Series 3 of the ultra-collectible Android vinyl figures.  With the new batch of Android goodies set to hit retail in the next few weeks, the Dyzplastic team has started teasing us with design previews.

Our shipment is arriving on the sunny shores of California today and should be hitting retailers in a week or two after we clear customs and truck it over to the distribution center! Let’s count down the days with a few design previews, starting with Sket One’s glossy conman, 8-Ball Hustler. This slick black fedora wearing pool player also includes a cue accessory.
We’re huge fans of the stuff that these guys put out and cannot wait to see what it’s store for Series 3!

Multi-client chat app imo adds NFC support, enhanced location sharing

Multiple chat and Instant Message app imo have announced that they have released an updated version of its Android app.  The new version (2.7.5) sees the integration of two key location-based components, Near Field Communication (NFC) and location sharing.  Should you ever run into another imo user who happens to own an NFC-enabled device (Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S III, HTC One X, etc), you’ll be able to share your profile by simply holding the phones back to back.

For those not familiar, imo is a free app that ties together multiple chat and IM clients.  The app does not go against your text message plan or minutes however it will need some form of a data connection.  If you happen to use multiple services like Skype, Facebook Messenger, MSN, AIM, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Jabber, and Myspace, then you ought to check it out.

Sony details camera technology in Xperia V

Sony is pretty sure you’re going to like the camera technology that’s found in their new Xperia V smartphone.  Why?  Because it makes for a better image quality than in the past (less haze, parallax issues) as well as a thinner and lighter handset.  The tech is called “sensor-on-lens” and it essentially lets Sony remove an extra layer of glass from the camera.

With the sensor-on-lens touch technology, the phone is also made lighter and thinner, as an extra glass layer is removed (as needed in conventional handset stackups using a discrete touch sensor). This technology also moves the image plane closer to you as a user, which makes it feel like you are actually touching the image itself.

Samsung confirmed to deliver Android 4.1 to Galaxy S III in October

Samsung today confirmed that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will be coming to the Galaxy S III in October.  Speaking today at the UK launch of the Everything Everywhere (now just ‘EE’) 4G LTE network, Samsung advised that the flagship handset will pick up the latest version of Android in just a few weeks.

“…the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system will be available on the Galaxy S3 from October.”

While we don’t have a hard date at this time, we like that the window is not so large any longer.  Look for an official announcement out of Samsung in the next few weeks.  Here’s to hoping the U.S. versions are right behind… or at the same time.

Hack the Nexus 7 to record 720p videos

Google Nexus 7 is without any doubt an amazing tablet, and it comes with a bag full of bells and whistles but still it couldn’t stop the hackers to come up with some extraordinary tweaks. If you like shooting videos with your Nexus 7, but you are not satisfied with the video quality, then you can take it up a notch. A developer known as hillbeast over at the XDA-developers forum turned the Nexus 7 into a 720p shooting tablet.

Out of the box, the Nexus 7 comes with a 480p video shooting capability, but the device supports 720p shooting at a hardware level, so why not? Hillbeast mentioned that “Google didn’t add the media profile for 720p to tell it how to use 720p”, though after installing the hack, you will be able to record 720p videos.

Android developers head to Toronto on October 25 for AndroidTO 2012

Android developers living north of the border are encouraged to sign up for AndroidTO 2012.  Heck, all Android developers looking for a bit of help with coding and practices would be wise to circle their calendar for October 25.

Now in its third year, the annual event has seen speakersand sponsorship from the likes of Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and Sony. With Rogers, Microsoft, Sony, and BNOTIONS already on board for 2012, this year promises to be just as big, and fun, and helpful.

Tickets for the all-day event are $199 however students can secure a spot for as low as $49, providing they bring a Student ID on October 25.

About the Event

The AndroidTO Conference provides a forum for Android developers, mobile designers/art directors, start-ups, entrepreneurs or enthusiasts of mobile technology to learn about the latest product innovations and solutions and network with the best and brightest in the industry.

Verizon Mobile Security designed with help of Asurion and McAfee

Verizon Wireless today introduced a new app designed to protect Android smartphones from cyber attacks, theft, and more.  Called Verizon Mobile Security, the app is created with help from Asurion and McAfee, and brings some of their better features to the forefront.

The app is created for Android 2.1 and above and comes in three different versions.  Depending on how much you want to protect yourself, or how much you plan to spend each month, the three plans are as follows.

  • Verizon Mobile Security Basic – Provides antivirus protection, powered by McAfee, to detect viruses and malware, and McAfee® SiteAdvisor® to identify and warn customers of suspicious websites.  There is no charge to download Verizon Mobile Security Basic, but a Verizon Wireless data plan is required and data usage will apply.
  • Verizon Mobile Security Premium – Includes the security features of Verizon Mobile Security Basic, as well as McAfee App Alert, which delivers information about which apps have the ability to access, store or transmit data to or from the device.  Available for $1.99/month per line, Verizon Mobile Security Premium also provides recovery features that allow customers to remotely locate, alarm, lock or wipe data from a lost or misplaced device using their My Verizon accounts.
  • Verizon Mobile Security Premium with Total Equipment Coverage – Customers with Total Equipment Coverage can add Verizon Mobile Security Premium for $1/month per line.  Total Equipment Coverage combines the benefits of Asurion’s Wireless Protection Plan for lost, stolen, and damaged devices, and Verizon Wireless’ Extended Warranty for mechanical or electrical defects after the manufacturer’s warranty expires.

ViewSonic VSD220 Android Smart Display launching in October for $399

ViewSonic officially announced the 22-inch ViewSonic Android Smart Display VCD22 at the Computex few months ago. I am still not sure what to call it, but after all it’s an all-in-one Android desktop. The good news is that it will hit US market this October as ViewSonic VSD220, and it will cost $399.99.

ViewSonic stated that the device is designed for both commercial and personal use, and it’s actually the future of connected computing. Its 22 inches display is touch enabled and Full HD, and there’s also a 1GHz ARM OMAP 4 processor under the hood, Android 4.0, three USB slots, a micro SD card, Bluetooth, 1.3MP webcam, integrated microphone, and a Micro HDMI. Though I hope it will be updated to the latest version of Android sooner or later.

Well, it’s not a bad device after all, also the price tag is cheap as compared to other AIO desktops and the price is almost equal to a price of a good Android tablet, so if you are looking for such device, then give it a shot.

Sprint confirms Android 4.1 has started for Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S 4G

Sprint today confirmed that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update has, in fact, started rolling out to their Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G.  Rumored last week to have been ready to go, it’s official today.  According to the press release, the Android 4.1 update is hitting devices now in an over-the-air capacity.

Jelly Bean, as many of you know, provides the following enhancements to Nexus S 4G and Galaxy
Nexus:

  • Google Now, which gets you just the right information at just the right time, like how much traffic to expect before you leave for work or when the next train will arrive as you're standing on the platform
  • Expandable, actionable notifications allowing you to take action directly from the notifications shade

Motorola and Intel teasing September 18 event with short clip

Motorola and Intel, obviously excited about their September 18 event, want you to get your adrenaline flowing.  To do that they have put together a very short teaser clip about their collaboration and are teasing the edge-to-edge power and performance. We’re expecting to see something with Intel’s mobile processor, of course, but now we’re also thinking a display and form factor that closely resembles the recently announced Droid Razr M.  Anyone have other ideas?

Google Play taps Boingo for free Wi-Fi in 4,000 hotspots through September

Boingo Wireless today announced that Google Play is sponsoring free Boingo Wi-Fi connections at more than 4,000 hotspots around the country through the end of September.  These sponsored locations include 15 airports ( John F. Kennedy, Chicago O'Hare, Seattle-Tacoma), Manhattan subway stations, and thousands of  hotels, coffee shops, and malls.  In case you were wondering, Google Play is the first sponsor to utilize Boingo's newly expanded Wi-Fi advertising network.

Starting this week, Wi-Fi users with Android phones and tablets, as well as Windows and Macintosh laptops, will be offered complimentary Wi-Fi at thousands of high-traffic locations in dozens of cities nationwide, courtesy of cloud-based digital entertainment destination, Google Play.

Sponsored Wi-Fi locations include 15 airports, such as New York's John F. Kennedy, Chicago O'Hare and Seattle-Tacoma, Boingo-enabled Manhattan subway stations, and thousands of hotels, shopping malls, cafés and recreational areas.

Consumers taking advantage of the free Boingo Wi-Fi sponsored by Google Play can get free content, check out the latest releases and stay entertained with instant access to their favorite music, movies, books, apps and more.

"Google Play is the first to take part in our newly expanded Wi-Fi sponsorship network, which reaches millions of consumers each month with place-based brand engagements," said Dawn Callahan, vice president of consumer marketing for Boingo Wireless. "Sponsorships like this give users the free Wi-Fi they crave, advertisers the consumer interaction they need, and venues the revenue to offset the costs associated with providing a high-bandwidth Wi-Fi experience."

The free Boingo Wi-Fi lasts through the end of September. Poll: Are you thinking of switching to iPhone 5?

As you all know by now, Apple is expected to announce the next generation of their iPhone smartphone tomorrow, September 12.  The rumors for this handset have been all over the place and the leaks seem to come by the minute.  That said, we’re pretty sure of what might be unveiled.  So, this got us to wondering…

Knowing what you know now, and factoring in what you expect out of Apple, would you consider switching to the iPhone 5?  We’ve got a quick and dirty poll below with four options to choose from.  Don’t like what you see here?  Use the write-in option.  In fact, we encourage you to get loud – on either side of the argument.

CyanogenMod team announces monthly M-Series releases

The CyanogenMod team recognizes that it’s tough to keep up with all of the nightly builds and rapid release of builds.  They also understand that if they don’t keep their foot on the gas with new releases, someone else is going to take their code and do it themselves.  Unfortunately, this can create a less-than-desired experience and lead to a bad taste for modding.  To combat this, the CyanogenMod team has announced M-Series releases.

M-Series builds will be done at the beginning of every month. We did a soft freeze of the codebase for the last week, blocking new features in order to stabilize. Our plan is to continue this (assuming that the response is good) up until stable release, and onward.  M-Series builds will be available under the EXPERIMENTAL tag. The filename will include the date stamp as well as the M version. These builds should be stable enough for daily use, and we encourage feedback and bug reports.

It’s not quite clear what the “M” stands for in M-Series, and even the CyanogenMod team doesn’t have a solid answer.  So, name it whatever you want, just be sure to look for it at the start of each month.  As of today the list of devices supported with an M-Series release is at eighteen models so be sure to check at get.cm!

Google Wallet: Prepaid cards discontinued

Google Wallet users are now getting a warning to spend their Google Prepaid Card balance before October 17th at which point Google will be removing all prepaid cards from the Google Wallet App. After this date passes the only way to get your money back is to put in a refund at the Google Wallet Prepaid Site. For you guys and gals that have a prepaid card sitting around and think you can spend it before the 17th of October, you can still add the cards to your account until September 17th. Also, resetting your Google Wallet app (if you have a prepaid card) during this time frame will be a bad idea because you will not be allowed to re-add it either.

Google claims they are discontinuing the Prepaid Cards because of the recent addition to their app, allowing users to add any debit or credit cards. Do you think this was a smart decision? Are you sad to see Google Wallet Prepaid Cards go? Let us know in the comments below!
