This Day in Android: Verizon announces $300 Droid Bionic (2011)

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 12:38 PM PDT

What a difference a year makes, eh?  Can you believe that it was twelve months ago today that Verizon and Motorola announced that the Droid Bionic would be joining the carrier’s lineup one day later.  Priced at $299 it was hardly the phone we saw some nine months earlier at CES.  Details for the Bionic, at the time, were pretty top notch stuff and included the following:

  • Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread
  • Dual-core 1GHz processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4.3-inch qHD display
  • 8-megapixel camera (1080p HD video)
  • 32 GB memory (16GB on board and 16 GB microSD)
  • Support for 4G LTE
  • Front-facing camera
  • HDMI output with mirror mode
  • Webtop docking capability

Where is it now?

You can’t even buy the Droid Bionic through Verizon today, even as a used model. Amazon has it in an no-contract option for $379.99.

How many of you were excited about the Droid Bionic?  Did any of you have $300 bucks set aside for the Droid that “rules all machines”?

Google patents mutli-user face unlock, first step to multiple user accounts?

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 10:09 AM PDT

Back at the end of July we discovered some information on what could become multiple user accounts for Android devices. Now the pieces are beginning to come together, as Google has just received a patent on “Multi-User Face Unlock.”

So imagine this: you’ve just finished writing an email on our Android phone, and your son asks if he can play a game. You simply lock the device, hand it to him, and it recognizes his face. Before you can say “Jelly Bean,” he’s off to playing his favorite game, without the possibility of his accidentally tampering with your personal information. Sounds pretty cool, right? This patent is a big step for Google, but there’s no rumored time frame for a release of this feature. In the meantime, we’ll have to imagine what multi-user face unlock is like.

So, who else is excited about this feature? What would you use multiple user accounts for on your device? Drop a comment below!

New HTC One X+ details confirmed?

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 09:50 AM PDT

The string of rapid-fire HTC leaks continues today as new details for the HTC One X+ have landed online.  According to XDA Developer @Football4PDA the forthcoming device will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and feature a quad-core Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.6GHz as well as 32GB internal storage.  Said device will measure 134.36 x 69.9 x 9.3 and weigh 129 grams when it arrives, hopefully in the next few weeks.

Should HTC debut the HTC One X+ at the September 19 event, we might also expect to see the latest versions of Sense (4.5) and maybe any other new features and services they’ve cooked up.

Comparing the Nexus 7 to the Kindle Fire HD

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 08:33 AM PDT

Until yesterday, the argument for low-cost tablets revolved, for the most part, around the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7.  Today, we’re swapping out the Amazon tablet for something a little more powerful.  We thought we’d put together a quick head-head list of the details so that readers can get a general sense of what each model has over the other, if anything.

It’s worth noting that this does not break down every single component, codec, and feature.  In a nutshell, these are the features that most users will look to for the sake of comparison.

Battle of the $200 tablet experience

ASUS NEXUS 7 KINDLE FIRE HD
OS Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Custom Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
Display 7" 1280×800 HD (216 ppi) 7″ 1280×800 HD LCD IPS

Early Consensus

If you are an experience Android user and really want to keep on the forefront of the platform, the Nexus 7 is the clear winner.  It’s a stock Google experience that just happens to be the latest release available.  The Tegra 3 processor is in a class of its own and the Google Play store opens the door to an exponential number of apps, including Amazon Appstore.

Those who are new to the tablet and e-reader game will likely find the Amazon Kindle Fire HD more appealing.  It might be easy to point to the extra storage, HDMI output, and Dolby Digital as the reasons for the justification, but it’s the experience that wins out.  Amazon’s WhisperSync, FreeTime, and X-Ray are incredibly cool features that users will come to enjoy.  Toss in access to the growing Amazon Prime Instant Video library and you can appreciate the “content is king” adage.

Which one is right for you?

We get the feeling that the younger you are, the more you’ll lean toward the Google device, but we could be wrong.  The Kindle Fire HD is going to be the one you see in beauty salons and airports while the Nexus 7 is the device you’ll see in colleges and and sports bars.  Obviously we’re speaking generally here, but the two appeal to different demographics.

Ask yourself what kind of user you are or expect to be. Do you plan to play the latest games and push the tablet around, bending it to your will? Heard about some great apps that sound like they’ll change your life?  Nexus 7.  Primarily want to read magazines, books, watch movies?  Like to game once in a while, but nothing too serious?  Kindle Fire HD.

In the end, neither of these are wrong for you.  It’s a cop-out answer, but  it’s what we’d tell our friends when they ask.

EA Mobile optimizes titles for Amazon Kindle Fire family

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 07:43 AM PDT

EA Mobile is sending out an email today to advise that their games are now optimized for the Kindle Fire, and that new Kindle Fire HD. Titles such as The Game of Life, TetrisMadden 12 and Plants Vs. Zombies are just some of the featured games they have ready for the new Amazon Kindle.

We have been supporting Amazon's platforms since the beginning and we are delighted to continue this relationship by having some of our top tier games available to consumers immediately for this new device, said Glenn Roland, VP of New Platforms for EA Social Mobile Publishing.

EA Mobile certainly seems to be growing fast as back in Q4 of 2011 they only had 10 games on the Amazon App store. Today, they have 24 games,  with plans on bringing more to Amazon App users.

What do you guys think about their success so far? Do you play any of their mobile-platform games? Let us know in the comments below!
