Android 4.0 update now available for the Samsung Captivate Glide on AT&T

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 03:33 PM PDT

With Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich becoming the 2nd-most popular version among device owners, it’s not hard to imagine that more phones will be receiving the long-awaited update in the very near future. Today, however, AT&T is adding to that number, as it has officially announced that Android 4.0 is now available for the Samsung Captivate Glide.

The update itself won’t be rolling out over the air. Instead, you’ll have to connect the handset to your computer, and download the software via Samsung’s Keys desktop suite. Once you’ve updated, be sure to let us know what you think of the new firmware in the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy Note II coming to Sprint?

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 02:12 PM PDT

A forum member on XDA claims to have confirmed the Samsung Galaxy Note II is coming to the Sprint network. rwilco12 posted earlier today that he was reviewing some Samsung RDF's on the Sprint web site when he discovered a new one for an unannounced device. An RDF is a document that describes the development and design specs for a device. According to the RDF some of the features the device in question will have include:

  • Exynos4412 cpu
  • 1280×720 resolution
  • Android 4.1.1
  • EVDO, DOrA, WiFi and LTE
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal storage
  • 8 megapixel camera

The list of specs matches up quite well with the information released by Samsung a couple weeks ago when they unveiled the Galaxy Note II at IFA. Since the original post, rwilco12 claims to have confirmed with Sprint that the device described in the RDF is in fact the Galaxy Note II.

No word yet from Sprint or Samsung to officially confirm any of this.

HTC announces the One SC for China with an updated design

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 12:45 PM PDT

At the beginning of the year, HTC promised us that they would release less phones this year, but for some reason they seem to be continuing the trend of offering many variants. We already heard about the One X+, now it’s time for the One SC. So far it looks like the One SC will only be for China. What makes this phone unique is the asymmetrical design on the back. As you can see in the image, the HTC logo is sideways and sits to the right in a ridged area. The Beats Audio logo is also sideways and to the bottom left. Last but not least, the camera lens is at the top left surrounded by a gray finish. I actually think it’s kind of cool, but unfortunately the specs aren’t impressing me all that much:

  • 4.3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) screen,
  • Dual-core 1.0GHz processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 4GB internal storage
  • microSD for up to 32GB of extra storage
  • 5MP rear camera f/2.0
  • 1800mAh battery
  • 8.85mm thick, 116g
  • Sense 4.0 on top of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Could this same design appear on the upcoming One X+? What do you guys think of the design? I think there will probably be a lot of love/hate.

HTC One X+ specs outed by XDA member

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 12:26 PM PDT

We’ve been hearing about a possible follow up to the HTC One X, dubbed the HTC One X+ for a month or so now. Well an XDA developer with the Twitter account @Football4PDA tweeted the specs. He said that it will sport a Tegra 3+ AP37 1.6GHz quad-core / 1.7GHz single-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and 1800mAh battery. We can also expect it to come with Sense 4.5 on top of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Last but not least, it will be 9.3mm thick and weigh in at 129 grams. Although HTC’s event on September 19th will probably be a heavy dose of Windows Phones, it’s likely the One X+ will be exposed as well.

The other important thing to note is that the Tegra 3+ will make it compatible with LTE. That is something I’m excited about. What I’m not excited about is the battery size and that it’s only 1GB of RAM. Since none of this is official, I will await further judgement.

Amazon Will Use The New Kindle Fire’s Lock Screen for Ads But You Can Opt Out

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 11:50 AM PDT

A top selling point for Amazon’s new Kindle Fire HD‘s is the low price. The web giant stresses this fact because Amazon knows they won’t make most of their money by selling devices, but by selling things in their massive online database of consumer goods through their devices. To get their customers to see those goods, Amazon will use the lock screen of the new Kindle Fires for advertising Amazon Special Offers.

This is not a new tactic for Amazon as they have used a similar model for the Kindle E-readers, but this will be the first time they use this business model for a Kindle Fire. On the e-readers there are options to pay so that you do not have to look at the ads every time you turn on your device. It looks like they will do something similar for the Fires because a rep from Amazon has confirmed that users will be able to opt out of the ads. Whether this option will be free or similar to what is offered on the e-reader side is unclear. Most likely the latter. Either way it’s still a pretty good deal for the price point.

Mysterious HTC device shows up in Verizon’s inventory system

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 09:32 AM PDT

Over the past couple months we have been tracking a new HTC device only known by its model number, the HTC 6435. This device first showed up in July when some GLBenchmark scores were discovered. The GLBenchmark data indicated the screen was running at a 1794 x 1080 resolution, leading some to speculate this would be a 5-inch device. The device appears to run on a Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor with an Adreno 225 GPU. Earlier this week, some images leaked of a new HTC device that some theorized was the 6435. Based on some visual cues, like red side rails, the new device appeared to be headed to Verizon.

The newest bit of information concerning the HTC 6435 is a listing that has shown up on Verizon's inventory system. Sources believe this indicates the device is 2-6 weeks away from being available to the public. With a press event scheduled for September 19th in New York City, the timing seems to work out well for Verizon and HTC to reveal this new device at that event.
