LG Nexus 4 appears in a UK retailer’s database, plus more info from XDA

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 03:02 AM PDT

The closer we get to the official unveiling of the next Nexus, the more leaks and rumors about the device make their way onto the internets. Today, courtesy of Minsk based XDA forum member “4shael”, we now have two additional photos of the handset, plus some specs. In case you haven’t heard by now, the LG Nexus is based off the Optimus G, the company’s latest flagship device. That means it’s going to have a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, and an 8 megapixel camera. According to the newest information we have, the LG Nexus will have just 8 GB of memory, which wouldn’t be a problem if it weren’t for the fact that it also doesn’t have a memory card slot.

We want to stress that the intel “4shael” provided is based off a prototype. Do you really think Google would be that stupid to sell a flagship device with such a small amount of storage?

There’s also some new information courtesy of Carphone Warehouse, a UK retailer. Someone who works there sent a photo to The Verge that shows the company’s database has two entries for a device called the LG Nexus 4. One of the entries lists a white model, the other a black model.

So when exactly is Google going to make this thing official? Andy Rubin, the father of Android, is scheduled to give a talk at an AllThingsD conference at the end of the month. That same conference is where Andy unveiled the Samsung Nexus S. It wouldn’t surprise us if that’s when Google planned to finally make the next Nexus official.

And what about the other smartphone makers? Rumor has it that there’s going to be another Samsung Nexus, an HTC Nexus, and even a Sony Nexus. Those devices have yet to leak as badly as the LG Nexus, so we’re just as confused as you are about their existence.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus spotted in AnTuTu benchmark, to come with dual-core CPU

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 02:16 AM PDT

It's definitely not safe to put all your eggs in one basket in today's tech world, but Samsung's basket count is getting a bit out of hand. We know that Sammy's increasing Android popularity is due to the fact that the company has devices for all tastes, needs and budgets, but the already thin lines between low-end, mid-range and high-end are just about becoming invisible.

The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 are Samsung's flagships. That's clear and obvious. The Galaxy S2 and all its variants are now considered mid-range. That is also undisputable. But what about the Galaxy S3 mini that will be on display in a German press event tomorrow? Is that high-end? Samsung seems to think so, although we're not convinced.

And if that wasn't enough to mess with our heads, here comes the Galaxy S2 Plus. This is a device that started making the rumor rounds right next to the S3 mini a couple of months back. While it is yet to be confirmed by Samsung, it looks like the real deal.

The S2 Plus has just been spotted in an AnTuTu benchmark carrying the GT-I9105 codename, and its rumored spec sheet continues to puzzle us. The test pretty much confirms that the handheld will be equipped with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz. The model and maker of the CPU is still unknown, although we're ready to bet it will be an Exynos SoC.

The GPU powering the S2 Plus is thought to be a PowerVR SGX 544 MP, which is the main reason we don't exactly know what to think of this phone. We're yet to see the new graphics processing unit in action, but chances are it's much snappier than the Mali-400 MP powering the S2, S3 and GNote 2. But if that's the case, won’t a 1.4 GHz dual core CPU cripple the GPU's performance? And if happens, will the S2 Plus end up being just another mid-ranger easy to lose track of?

Well, we can't fully answer those questions yet, but we do have the AnTuTu result that should shed some light on the S2 Plus' oomph. So, how does the new phone's 7,458 score compare with GS3 and GNote 2's results? In short, not good. The Galaxy S3 easily scores around 10,000 in the benchmark, while the Note 2 has been seen at a whopping 13,500.

We can't rely very much on just one benchmark result (especially one leaked online), but it does look like the Galaxy S2 Plus will be just a slightly evolved version of the original S2. The rest of the rumored specs support that, starting with the running of Android 4.0 ICS and wrapping it all up with a pretty modest 1,650 mAh battery. Not to mention that the 4.3-inch display is thought to come with a 960 x 540 pixels resolution, which is anything but high-end.

Would anyone consider getting a Galaxy S2 Plus with this rumored spec sheet? Is it really the time for Samsung to come out with a Galaxy S2 rehash?

HTC transitioning away from using Samsung components in their devices

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 02:01 AM PDT

Samsung is a very unique company. They’re one of the few players in the mobile industry who not only make mobile phones, but also manufacture many of the components that go inside their devices. Take the Galaxy S III for example. It has a Samsung made display, a Samsung designed Exynos processor, the RAM inside is definitely made by Samsung, and so are the storage chips. People often wonder how Samsung can make such advanced devices. Well, there’s your answer. They make the advanced components that are required to build bleeding edge smartphones.

HTC, like many other companies, relies on Samsung for parts. According to DigiTimes, the Taiwanese handset vendor is in the process of transitioning away from using Samsung components. Specifically, they’re now sourcing camera sensors from OmniVision and Sony, and screens from AU Optronics. Does this mean HTC has ceased doing business with Samsung? Not in the slightest. They’re just dabbling with other vendors in order to protect themselves. You know the old saying “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”? That’s what’s happening here.

Now don’t be fooled, this isn’t just an HTC only move. Apple was one of the first companies to do this. Considering that Samsung is their number one competitor, that shouldn’t surprise you. Also, we all know about Apple’s ongoing legal battles with Samsung. It’s kind of difficult to maintain a business relationship with a company that you’re also dragging into multiple courts in multiple countries.

Will other companies start mimicking Apple and HTC and wean themselves off the Samsung tit? It’s hard to say at this point. Part of the reason why people love dealing with Samsung is the fact that they don’t have to deal with multiple vendors. Think of it like this, would you rather go to that one grocery store that has everything you need, or one store for milk, another for bread, yet another for vegetables, and then on your way home you stop by the butcher?

Exactly.

Opera Mobile 12.1 supports ARM, MIPS, x86 and comes with built-in fraud protection

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 01:58 AM PDT

When it comes to browsers there are a multitude available for PCs, Macs and Android. On the PC, the leaders are of course IE, Chrome and Firefox. Behind the big three comes Safari (from Apple) and Opera (with about 2% of the market share). However for mobile devices it is a different story. Opera enjoys around 21% market share across all the different mobile platforms that it supports. That makes it a serious contender, and with the release of version 12.1 it has every chance of growing.

The Opera browser offers some key features that make it so popular. First there is its Turbo mode. This is similar to the Silk browser technology found on the Amazon Kindle Fire range of tablets. When a web page is opened the request goes via Opera’s servers. These servers download the page and compress the data before sending to the mobile device. According to Opera this means that pages can load five times faster than other browsers. In my testing I found that Turbo mode actually made pages load slower, but this may be due to my geographic location. However the advantage of compressed data is beneficial when using a 3G network, regardless of where you are and especially when roaming.

New in version 12.1 is the built-in fraud detection system that notifies you if a webpage you are visiting has been marked as suspicious. If you see the warning, it is a best to stay well away from the site. 12.1 also supports SPDY, the web protocol developed by Google to speed up page downloads. SPDY complements HTTP and using it allows HTTP requests to be compressed and prioritized.

In terms of raw processing power I ran the popular SunSpider JavaScript benchmark with Opera and with Chrome. There wasn’t much difference, but Opera did win by a fraction. After several runs I can say that it is about 1.5% faster than Chrome! Opera Mobile 12.1 also has various CSS and HTML5 improvements. I ran the standard Acid3 CSS tests on Opera and Chrome and both browsers scored 100 out of 100.

The architecture support for Opera Mobile 12.1 is impressive: it will basically run on any Android device including older ARM 6 powered devices as well as MIPS and Intel devices. What’s best is that your device will only download binaries for its platform, which reduces overhead and download size.

At the end of the day people can be very fickle about their web browsers, and switching isn’t really very hard (I know, since in my time I have used Firefox, Safari and now Chrome on my PC). The best thing to do is to give Opera a try and see what you think! You can download Opera Mobile 12.1 for from the Google Play store.

Leaked documents show ISIS is set to launch on October 22nd

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 01:16 AM PDT

Phones have been shipping with NFC (near field communication) support for several years now, but the one use case that we’ve all been waiting for, paying for things via a simple tap, has yet to take the market by storm. Google launched Google Wallet in May 2011, but hardly anyone is using it. Why? There aren’t any technical reasons to explain Google Wallet’s failure, it all boils down to politics. Today your financies are handled by your bank. They issue you a debit or credit card that you can use pretty much anywhere in the world. With mobile payments, who exactly “owns” the relationship with the customer? Is it the company that manufactures the phone? The operator that provides a SIM card? Does your bank release a mobile app?

ISIS was created in November 2010 by three American operators: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. They originally wanted to create a completely new payment platform, but now they’ve changed their tune. According to leaked documents, ISIS will work pretty much like Google Wallet. You manually type in your credit card information, and then that’s it. There’s also going to be a virtual “ISIS Cash Card” that you’ll be able to put money on, which is again, is similar to the Google Wallet virtual credit card.

When will it launch? The leak we mentioned earlier says October 22nd. Sadly, it’s not going to be available at a national level, at least not yet. The initial markets will be Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas.

Will mobile payments ever become a big thing? It’s an inevitability, but we’re going to have to deal with large companies and their competing interests for many years to come. That being said, we really question people who complain about today’s system. Credit cards are ubiquitous, and almost all the new ones being issued have chips in them that increase security.

Tapping to pay sure sounds cool, but is it really an improvement to what we already have?

Deal: AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S3 goes for $119.99 at Amazon Wireless

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 12:58 AM PDT

One of the perks of not jumping onto the latest and shiniest toy around is that once you eventually decide to get it, let's say six months down the road and after the hype has died down, you'll be paying a fraction of the price that early adopters had to shell out. Never mind the rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S4 for now, the Galaxy S3 is here and it's still the Android smartphone to beat.

For folks who still find the Galaxy S3 alluring, Amazon Wireless has some sweet deal on the AT&T variant of the phone.

If you're a new AT&T subscriber, the Galaxy S3 can be yours for a mere $119.99. If you fancy the blue flavor of the Galaxy S3, be prepare to wait for 1 to 2 weeks for the phone to be shipped out, since it's apparently in backordered status.  Both the red and white variants, however, are in stock – and Amazon will ship it to you in 24 hours.

If you're an existing AT&T customer and want to upgrade to the Galaxy S3, you will have to pay a bit more. The price for upgrader is set at $139.99. But hey, it's better than paying for full price if you get it directly from the carrier.

Are you going to take advantage of the offer?

Galaxy S3 mini name and announcement confirmed by Samsung’s JK Shin

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 11:41 PM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini

The Galaxy S3 mini rumors have been floating around the interwebs for quite a while now, although Samsung never confirmed anything. However, more and more reports indicated that the company will unveil the 4-inch Galaxy S3 version during a special event scheduled for October 11 in Germany.

And it looks that now w can confirm its existence, but also its name. The Galaxy S3 mini is coming this week – well, at least its announcement – and the news has been confirmed by Samsung's own JK Shin, the chief of the mobile division.

While Shin didn't reveal too many details about the Galaxy S3 mini, he did say that the handset is not going to be a entry-level to mid-range device. Instead it will be just a smaller form factor, but a high-end handset nonetheless, that they'll call "mini:"

“We’ll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S III on the 11th in Germany,” Shin said. “There’s a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it ‘mini.’”

His comments were made during a meeting with Korean press and they're very interesting. Even though he didn't say anything about the device, it's clear that Samsung is trying to put out a handset that will help it better fight the iPhone 5.

Apple's latest iPhone, which established a new opening weekend sales record for a smartphone and which is expected to sell in record numbers in the Christmas quarter, is also a 4-inch device, the kind of handset that would see a "lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe."

Is Samsung making a step backwards with a high-end Galaxy S3 mini model from the bigger-is-better movement we've seen in the Android universe?

Apple has been criticized for years for not increasing the screen size of the iPhone. Now that it finally did it, Samsung is getting ready to unveil a high-end 4-incher. Is it all a coincidence? If that's so, where was the increased demand for a 4-inch high-end smartphone last year when the 4.3-inch (and bigger) Galaxy S2 versions were launched?

Since we're dissecting Shin's statements to the press, we can't but wonder how a Galaxy S3 mini would be priced considering that it's smaller than the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2. Not to mention that the Galaxy S3 is already dropping in price with carriers. Will the Galaxy S3 mini be a high-end device available for a budget-friendly price (obviously we’re talking about on-contract pricing here), or will it be a high-end device that will come with a high-end price?

Availability details have not been revealed at this time, but the quote above seems to suggest that Europe will be the main market for this Galaxy S3 mini version At the same time, we'd be surprised not to see it launched in other regions as well.

Ultimately, Android buyers will definitely benefit from being able to choose from a variety of high-end devices especially at this particular time of the year, as the Christmas shopping season approaches. We'll definitely be interested to hear from you what high-end Samsung handsets you'd rather buy, the Galaxy S3 mini, the Galaxy S3 or the Galaxy Note 2.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, LG Optimus G and LG Mach coming to Sprint 4G LTE lineup

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 02:10 PM PDT

Last week LG announced that Sprint, along with AT&T, would be carrying the LG Optimus G. Sprint confirmed this in a press release today that also announced that they would be bringing the LG Mach and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to their 4G LTE lineup.

LG Optimus G

While everyone has already started talking about the LG Optimus G Nexus, the original LG Optimus G is no slouch. It has a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display with a resolution of 1280×768, a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage and 13-megapixel and 1.3-megapixel front and rear cameras. It ships running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but is slated for an upgrade to Jelly Bean in 2013.

LG Mach

While it may not be as powerful as the Optimus G, the LG Mach is under half an inch thick and includes a QWERTY slider keyboard for those who prefer a physical keyboard. The Mach is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and a 1,700 mAh battery. The LG Mach will arrive running Ice Cream Sandwich, and so far there doesn’t appear to be any word on when or if it will receive an upgrade to Jelly Bean.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is the only tablet mentioned in the press release and, according to Sprint, “is the first tablet to combine the benefits of Sprint 3G and 4G LTE with a vivid 10.1-inch touchscreen display, Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.” It also has a 7,000 mAh battery and mobile hotspot support for up to 10 devices.

In addition to the Android devices, Sprint will also be introducing the Plug-in-Connect Tri-Mode USB dongle, which offers 3G, 4G WiMax and 4G LTE connectivity. No word has been given on when we can expect to pricing or availability details for any of the devices, with Sprint simply stating that this information will be shared “at a later date.”

Do you have your eye on any of the new devices coming to the Sprint 4G LTE family? Which of them do you prefer?

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 2

We have known for a while now that T-Mobile is getting the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, even if the carrier had yet to officially confirm the news. It is now official, though we still know very little about when it is coming or how it will be priced.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has already started to ship across the globe, but U.S. consumers have had to wait a bit longer. An official confirmation from carriers is always a good sign that the wait is almost over. T-Mobile also told us that it will arrive in "the coming weeks". Want a more specific date than that? According to the rumor mill, Oct. 24th could very well be the official day for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Keep in mind that the date is only speculation for now, though.

If you’ve been living under a rock for a while, you might wonder what the excitement is all about. Besides following up the critically acclaimed Note as a leading phablet device, it also has extremely impressive specs. Here is a brief rundown of what to expect:

  • 1.6 GHz quad-core processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 5.5" HD Super AMOLED (1,280 x 720) display
  • 8MP rear cam, 1.9MP front cam
  • GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0 host, NFC

  • 80.5 x 151.1 x 9.4 mm, 180 g
  • Battery: Standard battery, Li-ion 3,100mAh

LG Optimus G Nexus camera photos spotted already on Picasa

Earlier today we showed you the first leaked images of the LG Optimus G Nexus – the name isn't official yet, but most rumors agree that the first LG Nexus handset will be largely based on the LG flagship handset – and we told you everything we know about the upcoming device.

But it looks like we're not done with the leaks for today, as the first photos taken with the camera of this LG Nexus handset have been spotted on Picasa. According to EXIF data, assuming it was not tampered with, the pictures were taken with a "Google mako" device that sports an 8-megapixel camera.

You'll say that "Google mako" sounds nothing like "LG Nexus," and that's true. Mako is a codename and represents a type of shark. How is that relevant? Well, previous Google devices also had fish-related codenames: HTC G1 "trout," HTC Nexus One "mahimahi," Motorola Xoom "stingray," Samsung Nexus S "herring" and Samsung Galaxy Nexus "tuna."

Furthermore, the users that have uploaded the images to Picasa "seem to be LG Korea employees," according to Androidos.in.

We'll be back with more details about the upcoming Nexus handsets in the coming days and weeks. Meanwhile, let us know whether you are excited about the LG Optimus G Nexus or not?
