Camera samples from LG’s Nexus smartphone leak

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 04:05 PM PDT

After yesterday’s leaked images of LG’s Nexus smartphone, camera samples from the device have made their way to the internet. A slew of photos have hit Google’s Picasa web albums, each designated to have come from the same LG device, codenamed Mako. It appears that both users who uploaded photos are employees of LG Korea, though this hasn’t been confirmed.

Most of the images are 3264×2448 in size which leads us to believe the camera utilizes an 8-megapixel sensor. So, unless the users changed the image size within the camera settings, it seems as though the next Nexus device will sport an 8MP camera. There’s always the possibility that the EXIF data could have been faked, but it seems unlikely. We’ve embedded the full set of images after the break. Be sure to take a look and let us know what you think.

Google Wallet’s first major competitor, ISIS Mobile Wallet, set to Launch Oct. 22 in Salt Lake City and Austin

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 01:27 PM PDT

Google Wallet’s acceptance into everyday usage hasn’t been the smoothest, but has been picking up. With some carriers not allowing installs of Google’s NFC-based payment system, not everybody has been able to reap the benefits of living a potentially wallet-free lifestyle. So with such spotty acceptance, is there room for a competitor on this shaky ground? The makers (AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile) behind Isis Mobile Wallet seem to think so. Consumers will finally get to try out the long awaited new service on October 22 in Salt Lake City and Austin.

Isis has a number of similarities with Google Wallet: When users sign up they receive a free $10 Isis cash card credit, along with accepting a wide variety of credit and debit cards. If Isis can negotiate wider acceptance of their application and offer a simple solution to increase the number of NFC payment terminals, their October 22nd might just be a success.

32GB Nexus 7 could spell doom for the16GB model

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 12:50 PM PDT

As previously reported, we all know a 32GB version of the Nexus 7 is coming, but now there seems to be a new twist; the 16GB model could be phased out. If this information holds true, the new model will still have a $249.99 MSRP just like its 16GB brother, but sport twice the internal storage. Maybe Google is taking input on how wildly successful the 16GB version was at launch, and giving new customers a reason to spend the extra $50 instead of aiming for one of Amazon’s latest Fire series tablets. From this recent information I would advise any of you who are looking for a new tablet to hold off for a few more weeks to see what Google and ASUS have in store.

This newest rumor would make sense as to why a Japanese customer received a 32GB version in the mail after ordering a 16GB version, as well as lend some truth to a few whispers of potentially removing the $199.99 8GB version from stores as well. For now, we’ll have to keep our ears to the ground and wait the next piece of information to leak or something gets officially announced.

Android 4.1.2 OTA update rolling out to the Nexus 7, brings landscape mode

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 11:58 AM PDT

Right on the heels of Jean-Baptiste M. Queru’s announcement of Android 4.1.2 being released to Android Open Source Project, it looks like the same update is now hitting Nexus 7 devices via an OTA update as build “JZO54K.” The 31.3MB update seems a bit much just to enable landscape mode, so here’s hoping we’ll see a full change log soon. The notification itself pulled from the Nexus 7 simply reads, “improves performance and stability and fixes bugs." Nexus 7 owners, keep looking for that upgrade notification, or you can always try to pull it manually through the Settings. Hit the break for the full statement from Jean-Baptiste M. Queru.

We’re releasing Android 4.1.2 to AOSP today, which is a minor update
on top of 4.1.1.

As a note to maintainers of community builds running on Nexus 7: please update to 4.1.2 at the first opportunity. Future variants of  the grouper hardware will have a minor change in one of the components  (the power management chip) that will not be compatible with 4.1.1.

The build number is JZO54K, and the tag is android-4.1.2_r1.

Enjoy,
Conley and JBQ

Android 4.1.2 being released to AOSP today

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 11:35 AM PDT

Following yesterday’s news of the LG Optimus Nexus running 4.1.2, today Google Technical Lead, Jean-Baptiste Queru, announced that Android 4.1.2 will be released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) today. Given the slight, incremental update in the version number, this is viewed as a minor upgrade bringing it to build number “JZO54K” (for the Nexus 7) and is available on the jb-dev development branch as “android-4.1.2_r1.” While a full change log is not available, the Nexus 7 notification revealed the requisite, “improves performance and stability and fixes bugs.” For those that are running custom Jelly Bean ROMs, I’m sure we’ll see 4.1.2 merged into the updates within the next 24-36 hours.

Opera Mobile update includes SPDY, added HTML5 support and improved security

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 11:02 AM PDT

A new version of the mobile web browser Opera has been released in the Play Store. Opera 12.1 isn’t a major overhaul of the app, it’s just an improvement over what was already a solid app. One big improvement is the increased security when browsing web pages. Now you will get a notification if you are visiting a website that has been “marked as being suspicious or used of illicit activity” the same way it does on a desktop web browser. This update also brings SPDY which improves the ability to fetch web pages so it may not jump out at you but you should be able to notice the difference. The latest Opera update also highlights HTML5 being the future of the web, or at least that’s what they told us during the Adobe Flash debacle, and Opera has added support including HTML5 drag and drop and clipboard APIs. Again this is not an overhaul but definitely brings nice improvements to the mobile browser. Hit the break for the full press release.

Opera launches Opera Mobile 12.1 for Android

Oslo, Norway — October 9, 2012 — After a strict diet, the new Opera Mobile 12.1 for Android is ready to show off its sleek new binary in the Google Play store. Despite being tailor made for four different chipsets, ARM v5 and v7, MIPS and X86, the Opera Mobile 12.1 browser remains sleek and slender since you only get the version suited for the chipset in your Android mobile or tablet. That saves time and data on downloading — Opera style. Combined with its Opera Turbo compression technology, Opera Mobile 12.1 is one lean, mean surfin' machine.

If you don't know Opera Mobile from before, it's most easily described as the full-featured sibling of the data-saving Opera Mini, a browser essential for anyone on a slow network, or in need of compression to save data, for example while roaming abroad. Opera Mobile 12.1 features Opera Turbo technology, one click turns on the compression capability — and you will use less data.

Keeping the baddies at bay

The bad guys on the web never pass up an opportunity to try their tricks on surfers, but staying mobile doesn't have to mean being unsafe. Unlike Blade Runner, you don't need a Voight-Kampff test to determine whether you have a rogue site on your hands, just Opera Mobile's new fraud detection. The fraud detection system tells you when a webpage has been marked as being suspicious or used for illicit activity. If you get a warning, it's a good idea to think twice about visiting that site.
Raisin' the standards

Using the web on the go should not mean sacrificing functionality. That's why Opera Mobile now supports even more web standards, making sure the experience of mobile surfing is as close to the desktop experience as possible.

From the big screen to the mobile

In Opera Mobile, several features that have previously only been seen on the big screen, the computer screen that is, come to life on your Android mobile or tablet. In Opera Mobile 12.1, several heavy-hitting desktop capabilities are available for your mobile and tablet devices:

SPDY: Shortly after the introduction of SPDY on Opera 12.10 desktop beta, the HTTP improvement protocol has made it into the Opera Mobile version. Using a new and improved protocol for communicating to web servers around the world, the SPDY protocol makes fetching webpages more efficient. Twitter and Gmail are two early adopters of the SPDY protocol. Rumors has it that SPDY, by the way, would be pronounced "spø-ddi" in Norwegian.

WebSockets: Rich content is the new way of the web, and WebSockets is here to make it happen. With WebSockets, the browser in your mobile device get top notch access to the web server, improving two-way communications between your mobile device and web server for applications.

Better-looking browsing

There is no reason for letting surfers have a bad day on the web while using mobile devices. With Opera Mobile 12.1, there are even more options for web developers to improve the surfing experience and make sure the content of their webpages is displayed in the best way possible. This is why we included even more web standards in the new, smaller package.

CSS features: New support for CSS Animations and Flexbox allows web developers to be even more creative in design and layout of their webpages.

More HTML5 goodies: Combine the visual eye candy of CSS with some HTML5 practicality and voilá, even better mobile browsing. That's why we've added HTML5 goodies like HTML5 Drag and Drop and the HTML5 Clipboard API to Opera Mobile 12.1. These features help web developers connect better to the surfer's devices and, e.g., access clipboard content such as text and pictures.

Motorola Atrix 2 gets a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 10:53 AM PDT

Motorola Atrix 2 owners are rejoicing today because AT&T started rolling out the Ice Cream Sandwich update. We were expecting this but there is no doubt Atrix 2 owners will be happy to ditch Gingerbread. This update brings ICS favorites like Face Unlock, swipe away notifications and tabbed browsing. The update also brings Motorola’s quick-launch lock screen which allows users to unlock their phone directly to the camera, phone dialer, text messaging or home screen. It is still unlikely that the Motorola Atrix 4G will get ICS despite the protests, but at least Motorola is making a step in the right direction with other phones.

Featured Play Store Review: Jellyflop! [Brain & Puzzle]

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 10:15 AM PDT

Jellyflop, from Concrete Software, is a brand new physics based puzzle game that just hit the Google Play Store. I doubt you ever saw a jellyfish fly did you? Well in this game, your jellyfish kind of does. It’s up to you to bounce a cute jellyfish around trying to capture raindrops and feathers. Along the way, you will meet new characters and earn achievements.

You are given a certain amount of jelly and your job is to draw lines utilizing this jelly. You can angle them however you want and make them as short or long as you need. The lines have a certain bounce to them so they will direct or re-direct your jellyfish, and hopefully you will collect all the raindrops as well as the feather. Watch out though, because if you draw too many lines, you could run out of jelly. As you would expect from a game like this, you will find obstacles like fans that could blow your jellyfish in the wrong direction. Other things like teleportals could be helpful or not depending on how you look at it. It’s really hard to explain this game, but if you check out their quick trailer video below, you will get the idea.

Along the way you will get the ability to dress up Jelly with stylish hats. The more raindrops you collect the more will be unlocked. There are also 21 achievements to earn, which are as simple as completing the beginning tutorials, to getting 3 seconds of hang time, and completing each zone.

Features Include:

  • 5 zones and 100 levels of high-flying fun!
  • Fun and addictive physics system!
  • Draw lines anywhere to solve puzzles!
  • Earn achievements and unlock stylish hats!
  • Meet quirky characters along the way!

In Jellyflop you aren’t graded by the 3 star system, but in a sense the rain drops that you need to capture are similar. If you aren’t able to grab all the raindrops, you can still unlock the next level by grabbing the feather, but you never really feel satisfied unless you accomplish the task and grab all the rain drops as well. So if you only get one raindrop, it’s similar to getting one star on Cut the Rope or Angry Birds. You also earn points and they are based on how much jelly you use. I haven’t figured out what the points really represent other than bragging rights. I felt satisfied enough by just grabbing all the rain drops and the feather, but I guess you can always try to tweak your lines to get more points.

Everything is easy to understand since there is a really short and sweet tutorial, and everything is explained when something new is introduced. I found Jellyflop to be very addicting, and if you like physics based puzzlers, you have to try it out. It’s Free so you have nothing to lose. Check out the quick trailer video below and hit one of the download links to get started. As always, let me know what you think.
