T-Mobile and Lookout delivering Mobile Security Solution to protect customers’ devices

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 04:05 PM PDT

Today, T-Mobile and the Lookout team have announced a partnership to bring customers an alternative mobile security solution. Lookout's Automatic App Security will come pre-loaded on select devices this year on T-Mobile and is expected on most Android devices in 2013, securing smartphones and tablets right out of the box for free.

The second you turn on your T-Mobile Android device that has this pre-installed, your device will automatically be secured upon boot. According to T-Mobile and Lookout:

Lookout will scan all applications upon download, in addition to providing weekly scans for potential threats, using its Mobile Threat Network, the world’s largest database of applications. The user will be notified if the application is determined to be safe or not. If an application is identified as potentially harmful, Lookout will provide information and instructions on how to protect against the threat or uninstall the application.

These days, plenty of people are looking for extra ways to protect their mobile phones. After all, these phones are more like computers these days than actual phones. You can always pay $2.99 extra per month for additional features such as remotely locking your device or backing up photos. Do you guys see this as something you’d love to have or do you see it as something you don’t need and will just add to bloat-ware?

You can check T-Mobile and Lookouts press release after the break for further information!

T-Mobile and Lookout Team Up to Bring Leading Mobile Security Solution to Protect Customers' Devices

An industry first, T-Mobile and Lookout will provide customers with exclusive service: Out-of-the-box protection against application malware and viruses

BELLEVUE, Wash., and SAN FRANCISCO — Oct. 24, 2012 — Today, T-Mobile USA, Inc. and Lookout Inc., the leader in mobile security, announced the companies have partnered to provide T-Mobile customers instant protection against mobile threats with Automatic App Security. Exclusively for T-Mobile customers, Lookout's Automatic App Security will come preloaded on select devices this year and is expected on most Android™ devices in 2013, securing smartphones and tablets right out of the box for free.

"T-Mobile wants our customers to enjoy the full benefits of the smartphone or tablet experience, including worry-free access to applications, which is why we are taking extra measures to protect their devices, privacy and data," said Ian McKerlich, vice president of product management, T-Mobile USA. "Lookout already scans more than 36 million applications for T-Mobile customers every day. Preloading Automatic App Security on our devices allows even more customers to enjoy the security and peace of mind of knowing that they're protected with the leading Android mobile security and antivirus app."

"As we rely more on our mobile devices, for everything from business to social to banking, it is increasingly important that we protect them from threats," said John Hering, CEO of Lookout. "Mobile security is a priority for T-Mobile, and we are excited to work with them on keeping people everywhere safe on their favorite devices. Automatic App Security is just one way that T-Mobile is making mobile security simple."

Since Automatic App Security is preloaded, T-Mobile customers are protected as soon as the device is turned on. There is no setup or registration required to safeguard the device.

With Automatic App Security, T-Mobile customers should receive an improved overall wireless experience — at no additional charge. The LG Optimus L9 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab® 2 10.1 will be the first devices preloaded with Automatic App Security when it is available in the coming weeks. Existing T-Mobile customers can enjoy the same benefits by either registering the version of Lookout that's preloaded on their Android devices or by downloading it from the T-Mobile Picks section of Google Play.

Automatic App Security from Lookout is added security against mobile threats for T-Mobile customers. In addition, customers will have access to security with the Lookout Mobile Security app, which will come preloaded on most T-Mobile Android devices. The Lookout Mobile Security app provides free award-winning protection from spyware and malware, provides the ability to back up and restore contacts, and finds a missing device with custom SCREAM™ Tones, even when the ringer is off. Sprint releases push-to-talk app called Direct Connect

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 03:58 PM PDT

Looks like Sprint has launched an Android app to allow push-to-talk on a couple of devices including the Kyocera Rise and LG’s Optimus Elite. This app virtually turns your phone into a walkie-talkie, much like that annoying “chirp” Boost used to have years ago. Personally, I’ve used an app like this before called HeyTell. I see it as a good alternative to using your minutes if you’re low. Hit the break for a QR code and download link!

Android 4.2 could be Key Lime Pie and is a Motorola Nexus and DROID RAZR X one the way?

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 11:44 AM PDT

We have another leak to throw into the rumor mill. There is no way to tell if this is legit or not, but it sure is interesting. What you are looking at is a Motorola document that specifies Android 4.2.2 as Key Lime Pie and proceeds to show when devices will get the upgrade. As you know, all of them don’t even have Jelly Bean yet. Now the other kicker is the first two devices mentioned: The DROID RAZR X and Motorola Nexus, which show them as being shipped with the said update. Now if a Motorola Nexus does exist, it doesn’t mean we will see it this Monday, it just means that it could come out at a later date. The other thing I find odd is that there is no DROID RAZR i. It’s simply the RAZR i since it’s not on Verizon. Furthermore, no international device names (non Verizon) are mentioned, just DROID devices, which appears fishy. All in all, there is no way to verify the source. I guess this information is somewhat plausible and not completely insane, but we need to caution you that it could really mean nothing. I need more information before I’m buying.

UK retailers cutting price on 16GB Nexus 7 in advance of Google’s upcoming event

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 11:36 AM PDT

With Google’s The Playground is Open event only days away, we have already seen the Google Play Store “de-list” the 8GB version of the Google Nexus 7 tablet. A 32GB Nexus 7 device is in the works along with a 3G-enabled variant, which apparently has prompted some retailers in the UK to guess these devices will be announced next Monday. In response, they have started to cut the price on 16GB Nexus 7 tablets as it appears destined to become the bottom rung on the Nexus 7 ladder.

Currys has reduced the price to £189.99 ($302 USD) while retail chain Comet has cut the price down to £179.99 ($287 USD). Prior to these price cuts, the 16GB Nexus 7 was selling for £199.99 ($319 USD). Before being cut from the Google Play Store, the 8GB Nexus 7 sold for £159 ($255 USD), so the 16GB version appears headed toward that price range.

Siri-like Dragon Mobile Assistant app from Nuance now available

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 10:38 AM PDT

For those Android users wanting a more Siri-like experience on their devices, the time may be now. Nuance announced today a beta for their new application called Dragon Mobile Assistant. Using your voice, the app will assist in booking appointments, texting, updating Facebook and Twitter, getting directions, finding businesses, and checking the weather. We saw a similar app from Nuance earlier in the year, however, it’s been quite some time since then, and they’ve modeled their newest offering more akin to Siri – if that’s your bag. I haven’t personally been able to get into talking to my phone however. I don’t know, call me old-school, I guess.

Dragon Mobile is a free app, however it must be noted that it’s only available in English in the U.S. and you must be running at least Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Give it a go and let us know how it works for you. Maybe one of these assistant apps will be able to sway me from my old-school ways.

Verizon’s HTC DLX becomes the Droid DNA?

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 09:43 AM PDT

Remember that little nugget about the DROID Incredible X variant possibly launching as the DROID DLX? Well we can purportedly scratch that. According to Verizon’s Minimum Advertised Price listing, the HTC 6435LVW (codenamed DLX previously) will most likely launch as the DROID DNA. Also on the price listing besides the revealing name? The price of course. We’re looking at a minimum price of $199.99 which shouldn’t be too surprising. As with all leaks, just remember it’s not official until it’s official, folks.

LG Nexus 4 press render leaks ahead of October 29 announcement

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 09:03 AM PDT

I don’t know about you guys, but it seems like this year’s Nexus just wasn’t kept as quiet as last year’s. I also don’t think the anticipation is as high. Maybe it’s because it’s going to be made by LG or maybe it’s the fact that it probably won’t have LTE capability. Either way, there won’t be too much left for Google and LG to unveil this Monday, at least on the Nexus 4. Now the press render has leaked and you can clearly see that it resembles the Galaxy Nexus, which we already knew. You can also see the back has “Nexus” instead of “Google” and the pattern resembles the original Nexus live wallpaper. Last but not least, you will notice the time in the notification area is in the middle.

At this point I’m not sure of what else could leak regarding this phone, but we will still have fun on Monday as we should finally get our hands on it as well as hear about some other Nexus devices.

AT&T reports record sales for Android devices during third quarter

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 08:56 AM PDT

AT&T announced their third quarter financial results this morning, indicating they experienced record sales for Android devices. Sales of smartphones for the quarter rang up to 6.1 million devices, 1.3 million more than for the same period last year. AT&T indicates smartphone sales represent 81% of their device sales and almost 64% (about 44.5 million) of all wireless customers now have smartphones. AT&T also reports that 89 percent of their smartphone subscribers are on a FamilyTalk, Mobile Share, or business plan. AT&T seems to be quite happy about the success of the new Mobile Share plans, reporting 2 million subscribers opting for one of the plans in the first five weeks of availability and higher than anticipated uptake for higher-data plans than expected. They report a third of their Mobile Share customers are opting for plans with 10GB or more.

Breaking down the smartphone buyers a little more, AT&T indicates that of the 6.1 million devices sold during the quarter, 4.7 million were iPhones. They do report that 18% of those were new to AT&T, or about 850,000. It is not clear how many iPhone 5 devices were simply replacing older versions versus a customer moving to that platform from something else, but AT&T did indicate that Apple’s inventory constraints resulted in “the vast majority” of iPhone 5 devices going to existing customers. The remaining 1.4 million smartphone devices were other devices, but AT&T does indicate they had a “record sales quarter for Android and Windows smartphones.” Another point AT&T noted in their discussion is that more than 40% of their smartphone customers use a 4G-capable device.
