AT&T rolls out 4G LTE in a handful of new markets

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 10:43 AM PST

Yesterday, we heard that Verizon has plans to launch 4G LTE in a bunch of new markets across the country on November 15. Before it can do that, however, AT&T is rolling out its own 4G LTE service in a selection of new areas. Today the company announced that it has turned on 4G LTE in 7 different areas around the country, enhancing already-existing 4G LTE in other areas as well.

That makes AT&T’s list of new areas a bit shorter than the list of locations that will be getting Verizon’s 4G LTE tomorrow, but no matter – AT&T is hitting some major areas with this particular roll out. Have a look at the list below to see if your area is one of the places getting AT&T 4G LTE today:

• Daytona Beach, Florida
• Denver, Colorado
• York, Pennsylvania
• Tacoma, Washington
• Louisville, Kentucky
• Milwaukee, Wisconsin
• Provo-Orem, Utah

In addition to those areas listed above, AT&T says that it has also expanded 4G LTE service in the Greater Seattle Area and Anne Arundel County in Annapolis, Maryland. AT&T says it’s turning service on today in all of the areas listed too, so AT&T customers in those markets should have 4G LTE service either now or shortly. All in all, not too bad a day for AT&T customers craving some 4G LTE speeds.

Of course, AT&T has some work to do if it wants to catch up with Verizon, but like its biggest competitor, AT&T has been rolling out its 4G LTE network pretty quickly. We’ll undoubtedly be hearing more news about AT&T’s 4G LTE roll out shortly, so keep it tuned here to Android Community for more. Are you in one of the areas that’s getting AT&T 4G LTE service today?

LG Nexus 4 available today from T-Mobile for $200

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 10:36 AM PST

If you’re one of the many that are excited about Google’s latest Android 4.2 Nexus smartphone, the quad-core LG Nexus 4, we have some good news. After the disaster and quick sell out of the Nexy on Google Play yesterday, some fans weren’t too excited on missing out. If you really want to save a few dollars, and sign a contract, T-Mobile has the 16GB model online and in-stores starting today.

Google’s popular new LG Nexus 4 went on sale yesterday, only to be completely sold out in about 24 minutes on the Google Play Store. The inventory seemed to trickle in and users were able to snag them throughout the day before it officially became “sold out” later in the evening. Today however you’ll get another chance, so long as you’re a T-Mobile customer.

T-Mobile is offering the 16GB Nexus 4, that Google’s selling for $349, on contract for just $199 online and in stores. If you’d like to give the new smartphone a try before you buy a local T-Mobile shop might be a good place to start. Or if you know you want it, you can start by heading here at T-Mobile.

For those that didn’t manage to snag one right from Google yesterday in the Play Store, this could be your only option at least for a few more days before Google gets more devices in stock. Sadly you can also buy it direct from T-Mobile for a mind shattering $499 — considering the exact same hardware is $349 from Google themselves. I’d suggest you buy it on contract, or just be patient and wait a few days for more to become available in the Google Play Store. Oh and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10-inch is available today from T-Mobile too, for those interested.

Who purchased the Nexus 4 yesterday? Or will you be resorting to T-Mobile stores instead?

Pantech Magnus 4G LTE leaks again – A few days late

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 09:54 AM PST

Today a smartphone headed for AT&T has leaked over on Twitter. The device is being listed as the Pantech Magnus, and was first leaked back in August with some impressive specs. Today we are seeing a final press image of the device, leading us to believe it will be hitting the shelves at AT&T stores soon.

Leaked on Twitter by @evleaks the Pantech Magnus 4G LTE appears to be running on Android 4.0 or 4.1 Jelly Bean, and has seen a few mild changes since it first leaked a few months ago. According to rumors this device packs the same 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core as the Galaxy S III, feature 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and obviously running on AT&T’s growing 4G LTE network.

Update: False alarm, this has since been released as the Pantech Flex.

A quick search finds that Magnus stands for “great”, and Pantech is aiming for more than just the budget crowd with this quality smartphone. We still don’t have any official details on the rest of the hardware such as screen size, resolution, or battery life. Previous benchmarks reveal a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720p HD display on the Magnus, and earlier leaks confirm an 8 megapixel 1080p video camera on the rear, and 1.3 VGA front shooter.

For now we still don’t have any additional details on this upcoming mid to high end smartphone from Pantech and AT&T, but should be hearing more soon. Now that official press images are going around (even if they are poorly photoshopped and missing the notification bar) this is a sign the device is ready to rock. The Pantech Flex is actually available as we speak for only $20 after mail in rebate and a new 2-year contract.

HTC DLX reportedly coming to China on December 6

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 08:55 AM PST

HTC is going to bring its 5-inch monster phablet to China. With China’s massive population, it seems like the perfect place for HTC to bring it’s incredibly powerful smartphone. China has long been considered a market where entry-level phones rule the roost, but there is a growing segment of the market seeking high-end devices, and HTC is looking to capitalize on that growing demand with the HTC DLX.

The HTC DLX (aka the Droid DNA) is an absolute monster of a smartphone. It comes with a 1080p, 5-inch touchscreen that looks impressive. It also features 2GB of RAM and a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. Of course, it’s a risk for HTC to bring such a high-end device to the Chinese market, but it could prove to be a great success for them.

The device is also slated to have a 12MP camera on the back, and a 2MP camera on the front. As with most high-end devices, it comes equipped with Android Jelly Bean installed, so Chinese consumers will be able to take advantage of the latest Android features. Our own Cory was impressed when he got his hands on the Droid DNA, and he said he “can't stress enough how amazing this screen looks.”

We shall have to wait and see how well this phone does in China. We expect it be a huge success in the US as the Droid DNA, where high-end smartphones are all the rage, but this is kind of a new venture in China. We shall wait and see what kind of response it receives on December 6, if this rumor actually comes to pass.

T-Mobile Galaxy S III getting Jelly Bean update OTA and through Kies

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 08:20 AM PST

Galaxy S III owners on T-Mobile are finally getting the coveted Jelly Bean update. Android 4.1.1 is coming to device owners OTA and through Samsung Kies desktop software. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of the upcoming Jelly Bean updates as AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and US Cellular have to yet to issue updates to device owners.

Of course, Jelly Bean brings some awesome improvements to the Galaxy S III. Some of the most noteworthy features include Google Now, Project Butter, and the new notifications bar. It definitely makes the device easier to use. Users have been patiently waiting, and at least for those on T-Mobile, that wait is coming to an end.

If your phone is rooted, you will need to download and flash the new firmware yourself. The folks at SamMobile have the new firmware available on its download page. You can flash this to your T-Mobile Galaxy S III and get all the slick new features of Jelly Bean 4.1.1 T999UVDLJA on your smartphone. It will also roll out to Samsung Kies soon enough, so you can get the official version of the firmware soon enough.

The update is rolling out gradually, so you may not see it on your device just yet. Be patient, and it will be ready soon enough. Hopefully, we will hear something from the other carriers in regard to a release of the new firmware. As always, we will keep you posted as to when the other major cell phone carriers in the US announce the release timeline for Jelly Bean on Galaxy S III devices.

Google TV updated with voice search and more awesome goodies

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 07:32 AM PST

Google has announced some awesome improvements to its Android-based Google TV service. The service has been out for around two years now, and while it hasn’t quite taken off the way Google may have hoped, it is slowly gaining traction, and nice updates like this should attract more people to it. The new update adds voice search and a rebrand of the movies & TV shows section now called "PrimeTime."

Voice Search allows you to find whatever you want to watch by simply speaking. You can start a YouTube video, open an app, do a Google search and do pretty much anything. It definitely should make using Google TV quicker and easier, which is what the service is all about. It can even use context to figure out what you are looking for. For example, Google suggests saying “hot to tie a tie.” This will cause it to automatically search YouTube for instructional videos on the matter.

Google also rebranded its guide feature. The name has been changed to PrimeTime, but it’s more than just a name change. Google has improved the functionality and made it easier to find the programing you are looking for. You can use it to flip through the best stuff on live TV, access your favorite channels, see TV shows you recently watched.

Google also improved the way Google TV functions with YouTube. As we reported, you can now use your Android smartphone as a sort of remote for controlling YouTube videos on your TV. All in all, this update makes it easier to get access to the wide range of content available on Google TV. Between the voice search, improvements to PrimeTime, and easier access to YouTube through smartphones, Google is taking Google TV to a higher level.

Samsung’s mobile chief says it has “no intentions” of settling with Apple

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 06:32 AM PST

HTC and Apple just came to a settlement agreement for patent claims, but Samsung has no intervention of following HTC’s lead. When asked if Samsung would be interesting in pursuing a settlement, Samsung Mobile head J.K. Shin told press that "we have no such intention." He went on to predict Q4 2012 sales at least as strong as those in Q3, which seems to be saying that Samsung is doing just fine, and has no need to settle.

HTC and Apple’s agreement sees HTC paying Apple somewhere in the region of $6-$8 per mobile phone sold. That put an end to several ongoing suits, but it is certainly painful for HTC to be forced to play Apple a fee for every device sold. Samsung appears to be uninterested in making such a deal with Apple. With Samsung easily topping smartphone sales, it’s easy to see why it would not want anyone else to get a piece of that pie.

Apple’s arguments claim that Samsung is a “copyist” that has borrowed its designs, functionality and other technologies in an effort to shorten the time to develop its own products. Samsung, on the other hand, is countering that Apple has infringed on several of its patents, including those around 3G connectivity in several devices. It seems like every week there is a new suit between the two, and if this statement from Shin is any indication, it does not seem that these are going to end any time soon.

Of course, Samsung has already been slapped with a $1-billion judgment in a high-profile case. As you would expect, Samsung is appealing that decision with a claim against the foreman of the jury. On the other hand, some courts in other countries have ruled in favor of Samsung, so it’s clearly a back and forth battle. In one popular case, Apple was forced to publish a statement on its website saying that Samsung did not, in fact, copy them at all.

Android sales double from Q3 2011 to Q3 2012

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 05:51 AM PST

A report from analysts Gartner has broken down the sales of smartphones from Q3 2012, and the numbers are rather interesting. As you would expect, Android was the best-selling OS by a sizable margin. Along with that, it also had the highest percentage of market share for Q3, and the competition was not even close.

In all, Android sold 122,480,000 units in Q3, according to the report. In second place was iOS, which sold 23,550,300. In third was Research In Motion (RIM) with 8,946,800, which is obviously a huge decline for the company that used to be the number one manufacturer of smartphones not long ago with its BlackBerry OS. All that said, Android clearly has the market on lockdown, and they are showing no signs of relenting that hold.

As far as market share for Q3 2012, Android had that well under control too. Android had 72.4-percent of the market, up from 52.5-percent in Q3 of last year. While Android grew a great deal year-over-year, iOS actually saw a decline in market share. It went from 15-percent of the market to 13.0-percent. RIM saw a huge drop too, from 11-percent down to 5.3-percent.

The report also talks about manufatures and their sales volumes. As you can probably guess, Samsung is the leader by a good margin. Samsung sold a total of 97,956,800 devices for 22.9-percent of the market. Nokia and Apple rounded out the top three device manufacturers.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean arrives for DROID RAZR M

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 01:32 PM PST

Late last week we shared some news that the Motorola DROID RAZR M was set to receive android 4.1 Jelly Bean in the coming weeks. Motorola stated the RAZR M would be the first of many to receive the update, followed by the RAZR HD and more. Today we can confirm the update has indeed started rolling out from Motorola and Verizon, and is arriving on RAZR M devices as we speak.

True to their word, Motorola is set to bring updates for their popular Android devices in a much faster manor than we’ve seen in the past. Something that we’ve been highly critical of Motorola for in the past. Back in September they stated they’d be issuing updates faster for all devices, and today that’s been confirmed.

The DROID RAZR M has barely been available two months, yet Motorola’s already updated it to the latest version of Android — that being Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Today however 4.2 has finally been released, but before today this was great progress for Motorola. With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean the DROID RAZR M (and essentially the RAZR HD, Atrix HD and more) will all get some much improved features and an even better Android experience.

You can now enjoy Google Now for all the siri-like features (and more) you’ll ever need, improved notifications that are expandable, project butter for even faster performance and much much more. Motorola’s also removed their ugly squared on-screen navigation buttons in favor of a more stock Android 4.1 Jelly Bean look as Google’s intended — as you can see from my screenshot above. The update should be arriving for all DROID RAZR M users over the next few days, so be sure and check for updates right this minute if you don’t want to wait. With faster updates, a new software Test Drive program and more, Motorola is slowly but surely getting back on track again. Thanks Google!

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean hitting AOSP – Get ready for ROM updates

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 12:12 PM PST

We had a feeling today would go exactly how it’s going. Basically it’s all about the Nexus and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in the world of Android news. Oh and Verizon announced the HTC DROID DNA if anyone noticed. Today Google is dropping all sorts of goodness on the Android Community, and they’ve just pushed Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to AOSP. They’ve also pushed the factory images for the Nexus 4, 7 and 10 too.

For average users this doesn’t mean much, but for all of the developers, tweakers, ROM building, and crack-flashing this is excellent news. Now that Android 4.2 Jelly Bean has been pushed to AOSP — the Android Open Source Project — it is in the wild for developers to access and use as they please. I’m getting excited.

All the developers at XDA and Rootz are probably already working hard to tear apart and integrate parts of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean into their custom ROMs. Nightly builds will probably all jump to Android 4.2 soon, and we’ll see ports to multiple devices too. Earlier today CyanogenMod 10 finally hit M3 (milestone 3) but most likely their nightly builds will get bumped up to 4.2 within the next 24-48 hours.

It looks like the Nexus S and XOOM won’t be updating past Android 4.1.2 — or it looks that way according to the AOSP update that just went out. Either way this is great news for everyone else. Now it’s only a matter of time before all of our favorite ROM developers start seeding out Jelly Bean to all their supported devices. Stay tuned folks and enjoy that Android 4.2

Verizon lists locations getting 4G LTE November 15

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 12:06 PM PST

Areas in the Midwest and western United States are about to get a big 4G LTE boost from Verizon. The company posted a bunch of releases to its News Center yesterday and today that detail all of the new markets Verizon’s 4G LTE will soon be available in. When we say “soon,” we mean it too – Verizon 4G LTE will be available in all of the markets listed after the break on November 15, just two days from now.

That means if you live in one of these areas and you plan on getting, say, the HTC DROID DNA at launch, you’ll be able to hop on Verizon’s 4G LTE network the moment its in your hands. Most of the list is comprised of areas in Missouri, though some folks in Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, and Montana will also be getting 4G LTE service come November 15. Have a look at the list below to see if your area will be getting 4G LTE service on Thursday:

• New Bloomfield, Missouri
• Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri
• Holts Summit, Missouri
• Otterville, Missouri
• Syracuse, Missouri
• Eldon, Missouri
• Tipton, Missouri
• Smithton, Missouri
• Etterville, Missouri
• Fulton, Missouri
• Kingdom City, Missouri
• Butte, Montana
• Laramie, Wyoming
• Cody, Wyoming
• Rock Springs/Green River, Wyoming
• Grand Junction, Colorado
• Mt. Vernon, Illinois
• Sierra Vista, Arizona
• Douglas, Arizona
• Benson, Arizona
• Nogales, Arizona

That’s certainly a fair amount of new markets, but these are just the latest in a long list of areas that have access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network. The company’s network continues to grow at a breakneck pace, and Verizon says that it should have its 4G LTE roll out finished by the middle of 2013. That’ll be coming up pretty quickly here, so it won’t be long before Verizon has 4G LTE set up and ready for use all over the country.

Verizon is the reigning king of 4G LTE, and with plans to begin wrapping up its nationwide roll out in about six months, it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon. We’ll keep you posted on new markets that are scheduled to get Verizon 4G LTE, but in the meantime, head down to the comments and tell us if you’ll be getting access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network on November 15.
