Google releases new Maps API for Android developers

Google today announced an update to the Google Maps API which gives developers a better, more comprehensive set of tools to integrate maps into Android apps.  It will be easier than ever to insert vector-based maps into applications, according to Google. Launching today as part of Google Play services v2.0, this is Google’s way of allowing for more simple and agile access to Google products within Android apps.

AT&T 4G LTE network now encompasses 150 million U.S. residents

AT&T has expanded its 4G LTE network to six new markets, three in the United States, three in Puerto Rico. With these new metro areas, the carrier now blankets 150 million people across 109 markets. Things seem to be moving pretty quickly for AT&T however they’ll want to step on the gas a bit of they hope to catch Verizon anytime soon. Big Red, for its part, already has 400 markets in the U.S., having hit the mark two months ahead of expectations.

  • Albuquerque, N.M.
  • Reading, Pennsylvania
  • Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Puerto Rico
    • Guayama
    • San German-Cabo Rojo

Best Buy knocking $99 off HTC smartphones on December 4

Best Buy will be holding a one-day sale tomorrow, December 4, where the retailer will discount HTC smartphones. The promotion, which you likely know from the headline, will be $99 off HTC smartphones. Among those getting the discount treatment are popular models such as the One X (AT&T), Droid Incredible 4G LTE (Verizon), and EVO 4G LTE (Sprint). Keep in mind that the slashed prices are only for qualified two-year service agreements.

Best Buy is also offered the Samsung Galaxy S III for $99 right now (December 2-8) for those of you looking at AT&T or Sprint. This is a savings of $100 off the normal asking price.

Sony issues minor updates to Xperia P, U, go and sola

Sony today announced that minor updates are being deployed to the Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia go and Xperia sola. Each device is staying with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, however the updates include bug fixes and performance enhancements.

The Ice Cream Sandwich firmware includes improvements to: stability, WiFi, tethering/portable hotspot, camera (capture and playback), NFC and Messaging.

It may take a few days or weeks before the various models get their update as each has to deal with carrier and regional barriers. As for Jelly Bean updates for Sony devices, we’re advised to sit tight and keep checking the Sony blog.

More proof of a 7-inch Galaxy Note

New benchmarks have been spotted which seem to substantiate the claims that Samsung may be readying a 7-inch version of the Galaxy Note experience. Previous DLNA certifications, which suggested that a GT-N5110 was on the horizon, line up pretty closely with the model number (GT-N5100) in these new benchmarks.

Samsung SCH-S960L found in recent benchmarks

Yet another Samsung device has been detected in benchmarks on GLBenchmark website, this one a potentially high-end handset. A Samsung SCH-S960L has some rather impressive hardware specs, including a Snapdragon S4 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, and a 1280×720 pixel display. Powered by Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, the device does not appear to have made its way to the FCC as of yet

Rumors bubble up for next round of Samsung models

Samsung may not wait a full year before they announce the next iteration of Galaxy S smartphone, according to new rumors out of SamMobile. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the tech blog advises that the presumed Galaxy S4 will arrive in April 2013. For what it’s worth, the device is said to be operating under the code name of Project J.
