Posted: 03 Dec 2012 04:29 PM PST

Peacock Imports promised Android/Linux dual boot devices to backers who pledged $99 or more on  indiegogo.com, a kickstarter-like site. They received 517 backers and easily met the $49,000 goal with a total of $72,707. The campaign ended yesterday but PengPod is taking pre-orders on the 7-inch  (PenPod 700) and 10-inch (PengPod 1000) tablets as well as the 3.5-inch miniPC (PengStick). Pre-orders are live now and will ship in January 2013.

All three devices are powered by a 1.2ghz Cortex A8 ARM single core processor and have hdmi and USB ports. The tablets have front facing cameras and a 3300 mAh battery for the 7-inch and 6000 mAh for the 10-inch. For comparison’s sake, the Nexus 7 comes with a 4,325 mAh battery and the Nexus 10 comes with a 9,000 mAh battery. The PengPods and PengStick will run Android 4.0 and KDE Plasma Active to help with the Linux touch interface. Android will be installed on internal memory while Linux will boot from an SD card.

Ice Cream Sandwich update for Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia go, and Xperia sola, brings performance updates and bug fixes

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 01:44 PM PST

Today, Sony began rolling out an update to Ice Cream Sandwich for the Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia go and Xperia sola devices that’ll come packed with ‘bug fixes’ and ‘performance tweaks.’ It’s unclear what exactly those tweaks are, but who among us doesn’t like a little tweaking?

The update to the firmware includes improvements to:

  • Stability
  • WiFi
  • Tethering/Portable Hotspot
  • Camera
  • NFC
  • Messaging

Xperia P users will get the update via OTA. Xperia U, Xperia go and Xperia sola users will get the notification as well via OTA if you’re already on Ice Cream Sandwich. If you’re on Gingerbread, you’ll need PC Companion or Bridge for Mac users to get the update. If you’re waiting via OTA, it’s said to arrive ‘in the coming weeks,’ but you can always check manually through your About Phone options. More information regarding your device can be found through the link below.

New cartoon by Google employee could hint at Android Key Lime Pie for next release

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 01:34 PM PST

As we noted in a recent post, Android has come a long way in the last five years, and we have truly seen an evolution of the operating system. As a spoof of this concept, Google employee Manu Comet posted a little drawing to his Google Plus page.  In it we see our little green friend evolving from a weak, frail, hunched-over blob, into a happy, healthy, upright and robust robot. In each phase of the evolution process he is eating the dessert that coincided with that particular Android release. Most interestingly, the last evolutionary phase of the process has our little green friend eating a slice of Key Lime Pie (long speculated as the next release of Android). This is by no means an official confirmation from Google, but it is pretty strong evidence to that end.  We don’t know what kind of features we will find in Key Lime Pie, or how much of a jump it will be from 4.2, but seeing all the great new features Google has cooked up in each of its recent releases gives us hope that we have a lot to look forward to! Now the waiting game…

Better Maps Headed to Your Apps

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 01:15 PM PST

Soon, we should all see better maps within some of the apps that we use. Today, Google launched an update to their Maps API that developers will use to incorporate Google Maps into their apps. This new API version will benefit both developers on the front-end as well as users on their end. It’ll allow developers to create their map features with less code and also provide them with the ability to incorporate satellite, hybrid, terrain, traffic and indoor maps into their apps, much like Google Maps currently does. It’ll, in turn, offer end-users more robust options in their applications when viewing maps. The overall goal is to make in-app maps look very similar to Google Maps for a seamless experience for all, and this update is getting us closer.

Gmail 4.2 update now live for non-Nexus devices

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 12:55 PM PST

Google released an update to the Gmail app in the Play Store, bringing it up to version 4.2. That brings the application up to speed with the version that ships with the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and updated Galaxy Nexus. Some of the improvements include auto-fitting text in emails and pinch-to-zoom within emails. Pinch-to-zoom must be enabled by going into settings and checking Auto-fit messages. They’ve also added some cool new swiping features to archive and delete messages. Those features are only available on Android 4.0 and above, though, so if you’re below that, you’ll still get some performance improvements, but not the new gestures and swiping. Hit the break to get your hands on the update.

Swiftkey reveals ‘Flow Through Space’ feature in new SwiftKey Flow keyboard

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 12:39 PM PST

Not too long ago SwiftKey showed of its new keyboard, appropriately titled SwiftKey Flow. There’s still no word on beta invites, but today we’ve got a new video showing a pretty unique, new feature in the keyboard. While typing out words, you can trace down to the spacebar and then keep going with the next word. No need to lift your finger at all for your sentences. Couple that with SwiftKey’s fantastic prediction engine, and I imagine this new keyboard is going to be a huge success. Hit the video after the break to see the feature in action.

Sony Xperia S Jelly Bean Update Details Coming Mid-December

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST

Sony Xperia S

Apparently just asking Sony for an ETA on software updates works sometimes. Sony responded, via its Sony Xperia News twiter account, to a tweet regarding the pending Jelly Bean update for the Xperia S by saying it would provide details in mid-December.  The update news falls in line with Sony’s statement regarding updating most 2012-release Xperia devices to Jelly Bean.

SwiftKey keyboard disappearing for Android 4.2 users, a fix is in the works

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 08:35 AM PST

Users of the ever-popular keyboard app, SwiftKey, are reporting problems after updating their devices to Android 4.2.  For many users, the keyboard disappeared entirely from devices after installing the Android 4.2 update. In some cases, the keyboard is simply soft-disabled, but others found the software to be uninstalled completely from their device.

SwiftKey is aware of the problem and is working closely with the Android team to get it solved. For now, the quick fix is to simply re-download the app and go through the installation process again. Unfortunately, this will not restore the lost user data or all the predictive word sequences that you worked so hard to build up. Hopefully SwiftKey will have this resolved soon. NenaMark2 Benchmark points to upcoming 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 07:22 AM PST

The first Samsung Galaxy Note featured a display of 5.3-inches, which many considered half phone half tablet (or phablet). Then came an actual tablet, the Galaxy Note 10.1, sported a 10.1-inch display. Of course more recently the original Note was upgraded to the Galaxy Note II with a slightly bigger display, at 5.5-inches. There has to be a 7-inch tablet in the works right? Well it looks like if that’s what is in your dreams, they just might be fulfilled. A recent NenaMark2 benchmark test has revealed the GT-N5100. Based on that model number it should be a Note device, and it happens to sport a 7-inch display. Other notables include a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 (same as Note II) and a Mali-400MP GPU. It will also come with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. We will most likely see this at CES or Mobile World Congress early next year. Anybody want to guess the price of this bad boy? I’m going with $299 for 16GB.

Right on cue, the Canadian variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III has begun receiving a heavy scoop of Jelly Bean across the major carriers. The latest update brings the Canadian builds to I747MVLDLK4 and will bring the usual Jelly Bean goodies like Google Now and Project Butter, as well as custom items like a sizable pop-up screen and additional home screen modes. All in all, the official update being launched should make those already awesome devices just a wee bit better.

The update is available now and can be found using Kies Desktop software or if you are the impatient type— you can always go to your Settings and manually grab the update OTA. Happy updating!
