Swiftkey Flow beta launching in ‘less than 24 hours’

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 04:26 PM PST

The company behind SwiftKey, the popular Android keyboard replacement, recently revealed that its all new “Flow Through Space’ feature would be arriving sometime this month. Well, it appears as though that time may be coming sooner rather than later.

Joe Braidwood, CMO of SwiftKey, took to Twitter today to announce that SwiftKey Flow would be launching “in less than 24 hours,” ensuring that eager users wouldn’t have to wait much longer to be able to try their hand at the Swype-esque keyboard. It has also been made clear that users who wish to get in on the closed beta should sign up on SwiftKey’s official VIP forums in order to receive the email invitation over the course of the coming day.

So, are you guys as excited as I am? Have you signed up for the beta yet? If not, be sure to head to the source link below.

Google Now Updated With More Cards And Faster Results

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 03:54 PM PST

Today’s update to the Google Search app brings some much needed speed tweaks to Google Now and adds even more scarily useful predictions to its “cards.” The update will probably continue to freak out those of us who are constantly surprised by how much the Goog knows about us but it’s also likely to help holiday travelers. It can now bring up your boarding pass (currently United only) when you need it, give you a heads up about the weather at your intended destination and let you know about events nearby. It will also let you search via the camera presumably in much the same way as Google Goggles.  The update also adds new voice actions like “what song is this?” and “scan a barcode!” And it now officially lets you know your monthly walking and biking distance totals.

I guess no one is going to accuse Google of resting on its laurels, eh?

How to setup multiple user accounts on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 12:58 PM PST

Android 4.2 brought Multiple user account support, which is a welcome addition. It’s only available on tablets since they are more likely to be used by more than one person in the household. This means yourself, your wife, your son, and your daughter can all use the same tablet and keep their own settings and app data. You can even set a pin or pattern to individual lockscreens to ensure privacy. For starters, this is only available on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, so if you own one, you will want to most likely utilize this feature. In a matter of minutes, you can get everyone up and running. Hit the break for a video highlighting the few simple steps.

Motorola sends out red and black jelly beans to the press to celebrate the DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD update

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 12:02 PM PST

Fed Ex just delivered a package from Motorola, and it was definitely a surprise since I wasn’t expecting a review unit. I knew if wasn’t a device since it was so light, so I opened it right away to find out what it was. In the box I found a bunch of silver tinsel, a bag of red and black jelly beans from Jelly Belly, and a picture card of the DROID RAZR HD display with a text message conversation about the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. As you know the update is rolling out this week to DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD users.

I know jelly beans and tinsel doesn’t cost a lot of money, but this was no cheap endeavor when you consider these were sent Fed Ex to many media outlets. Motorola is certainly proud they have been able to deliver Jelly Bean to their latest devices ahead of most of the other manufacturers. Hopefully this will be a trend that continues (and improve). So lets see, Key Lime Pie should be announced next May. Does that mean I can expect a pie on my doorstep shortly thereafter?

Chameleon Launcher Coming To Phones, Testers Wanted

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 11:50 AM PST

By now, you’ve probably heard of the Chameleon Launcher for tablets. Well now they’re looking for a few good testers (25 to be exact) to put the launcher through its paces on select phones. The main draw with the launcher is the context-based UI used to change the home screen. These contexts can be defined in different ways such as time of day, IP address, or location. It’s not quite like live tiles, but at the same time, your home screen won’t be static all the time.

The devices they want to test the launcher on are:

They’ve more than likely targeted the big boys for this test to make sure hardware wasn’t an issue. If you’ve got one of the devices listed above and are willing to assist by giving feedback, and not solely interested in just having the app early, then click through the source link below for more information.

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 10:18 AM PST

Sphero, our second favorite little robot, is one of the most creative ideas for a smartphone in the past few years. Some really dedicated Android users in Union Square, New York wanted to test out what they could do with the little robot ball by choreographing an entire light and dance show with 28 Sphero balls. It’s impressive, to say the least. If you want to see the coolest light show this year accompanied by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, hit the break below for the video.

Samsung ‘Mobile Store’ opens in Paris

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 10:12 AM PST

A few months ago, Samsung opened its doors to their stand-alone ‘Samsung Experience‘ store in Australia. They’ve quickly followed that up by opening another store – this one dubbed the first Samsung Mobile Store – in Paris. As you can tell from the pics, the store is immaculate with plenty of blue and white contrast for eye-popping appeal that should draw in folks of all ages. As the store’s name suggests, the Samsung branded store will feature mobile solutions including smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, notebooks and accessories.

The store is managed by a team of eight sales experts that are available to assist with your current Samsung device, help with questions about their devices in the store, and provide demonstrations featuring Samsung technology found in their devices. One cool aspect of the store is a dedicated room for the little ones with devices loaded with kid’s apps primarily targeted for ages 4-8. Samsung touts they will be able to “understand technology through writing games and drawing tablets.” This will enable parents time themselves to browse the latest Samsung offerings.

Featured Android App Review: Paintrala – SNS for Painting [Entertainment]

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 09:11 AM PST

Whether you are a seasoned artist or a complete novice, you will want to check out Paintrala. This app was developed by AltamiraSoft and won 3rd place in Samsung's Electronic Global App Challenge and 2nd place in Samsung’s Best S Pen apps. Now you don’t need a Galaxy Note device, but you will need a Samsung phone or tablet  for now. No word on whether this will open up to more devices, but Samsung is the king of Android right now, so a lot of you will be able to use it.

Paintrala has two really cool aspects to it that make this the perfect drawing/sketching app. The first is that it allows you to upload any image and trace over it. Unless you are a talented artist, drawing/sketching can be pretty tough. This tracing aspect makes it easy for anyone, and I mean anyone to make a pretty good looking sketch. You can trace/sketch a person, your pet, a sunset, a car, or just about anything. Of course, if you already have the talent, you can still do it all on your own. The second aspect is the sharing capabilities. Now I don’t mean uploading you images to Facebook. You can do that too, but Paintrala has its own social network for sharing your works of art. Think of it as an “Instagram” for artists. You can follow other artists and you can quickly see what’s hot right now. Paintrala even hosts contests, which gives everyone more incentive to share. The current contest running right now is portraits, and the one before that was on doodles.

The apps itself is fairly easy to use. Upon installing the app, you will need to create an account with whatever username you want. This way people can follow you and you can follow others. The main screen has five choices at the bottom and they are from left to right: People as in your feed of people you follow, the current gallery consisting of Hot Now and Today’s Choice, Open a new Paintrala, Contest winners, and your Profile.

When you open a new Paintrala, you have your choice of grabbing an image from your device gallery or going right to the painting tool. If you go to the painting tool, you will have the option of editing an existing sketch or starting a new one by tapping the pen at the top right. If you start a new project, you can still upload a photo by tapping the “+” sign at the bottom left. As far as tools go, you have the pen tool at the top left, which looks exactly the same as the Galaxy Note version. You can change the color and thickness to whatever you want and you can select from a pen, brush, pencil, marker, and so on. Next to that is the eraser, which also lets you select the thickness. Next to that is the eyedropper for grabbing a more precise color from a photo. Finally, you have options for undoing or redoing your last action.

If you uploaded an image, you can simply draw over it using either your finger or S Pen. You can in a sense add a drawing to your picture or make a sketch of the picture itself. If you’re opting for the latter, you will need to remove the picture after your done. You can do that by tapping the eye icon at the bottom left. Doing so will leave just your sketch, but you can tap the eye icon again to bring back the original picture for further editing. You can also zoom in and zoom out while drawing to get more detail.

You can also opt for an automatic themed sketch by tapping on one of the flower icons at the bottom. These themes include Origin, Pen Sketch, Color Pen Sketch, Pencil Sketch, Color Pencil Sketch, Cartoon, Grey, Vignette, Oil Paint, and Pastel Sketch. You can still trace or add to the new image if you so wish.

Paintrala is really a lot of fun and addicting. Like I mentioned at the beginning of the post, it doesn’t matter if you are a pro or a novice. It’s completely free so give it a shot. Check out the demo video below that shows you how to draw Gangnam style, and hit one of the download links to get started. As always let me know what you think.
