T-Mobile Galaxy Note II getting OTA update with Exynos and bug fixes

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 10:37 AM PST

If you’re the proud owner of a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphone it looks like the folks from Samsung and T-Mobile are pushing out a quick software update this morning. All you Note II owners should be on the lookout to accept an update that should fix a few problems, most notably that Exynos exploit we mentioned late last year.

P1100960-540x405

Yup, today T-Mobile is issuing a software update for their Note II. Back in December we learned about a potentially damaging exploit and bug in Samsung’s Exynos kernel, and reports are claiming that is one of many small bugs being fixed here today. Last month Samsung vowed to quickly fix the problem and this appears to be them keeping that promise.

Screen Shot 2013-01-16 at 10.32.21 AM

As usual, you can find all of the details and information from T-Mobile support pages as well as above. Like with most updates you’ll be able to accept an over the air update and quickly move along with your day, or use Samsung Kies should you choose to manually update.

Aside from the Samsung Exynos exploit we aren’t too sure what other bugs are being fixed, but rest assured a few fixes and improvements are surely present. T-Mobile doesn’t state what, and only mentions “various fixes.” Either way things should be steadily improved. Enjoy the update and drop us a comment if you notice anything different or have issues.

Android 4.1.1 update now available OTA for AT&T Galaxy S III users

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 10:20 AM PST

AT&T originally released the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S III back in December. Unfortunately, at that time the update was only available using Kies. And well, it looks like that has since changed and new reports are showing the update as now coming over-the-air. Simply put, if you have an AT&T Galaxy S III you can now get Jelly Bean without having to attach your handset to a PC.

first-540x355

The one (small) catch, you will need to be connected to Wi-Fi. That aside though, the update measures in at around 350MB in size and will bring your handset to Android 4.1.1. AT&T Galaxy S III users now have a few options to consider — sit back and wait for the update notification to arrive or take the pro-active approach and seek it out. That is, assuming you haven’t already updated using Kies.

Those taking the get it as quick as you can approach, grab your handset and navigate to Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> Software Update to get the process started. And given this is a healthy sized download, you will most likely want to make sure you are either plugged into power or have more than a fair amount of battery power before you get started.

That being said, we are fairly certain that most (if not all) of you know what Jelly Bean will bring, however just in case — you can expect the smoothness that comes along with Project Butter as well as enhanced notifications, some improvements dealing with the camera and of course, Google Now which just recently got the addition of digital boarding passes.

Motorola Atrix 4G ICS update in testing, could arrive soon

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 10:14 AM PST

We have some potentially awesome news for many of you happy Motorola Atrix 4G owners. When the device launched long ago as one of the first Tegra 2 dual-core smartphones it was rather impressive, but since then it has been long forgotten in terms of updates. Today however Motorola might finally be ready to test the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update before releasing it to the public.

motorola-atrix-4g-accessories-ac-02-AndroidCommunity-540x2831

Yes, the Motorola Atrix 4G is still sadly stuck on that little running Android 2.3 Gingerbread man, while we’ve all moved on past tasty Ice Cream Sammiches (yes, Sammiches) and now Jelly Bean. We have good news though. Motorola appears to be preparing their usual “soak test” where they’re looking for members to be part of an update early.

Nothing actually confirms this is in fact Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the Atrix 4G, but we’ve seen a few ICS builds leak for the device in the past, so it only makes sense. The issue we have is Motorola’s recently confirmed this device and a few others won’t get ICS, but maybe they changed their minds. News has hit XDA confirming the update soak test (or beta test) so we should be learning additional details here very soon.

We have a feeling this also means the Atrix 4G won’t be getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and that ICS will be the last official update for the aging yet still capable handset. At least you’ll be able to enjoy that new user interface and better performance from ICS, but Google Now is a no go. If you’re a part of the soak test drop us a comment below and let us know how it goes.

Nexus 7 dock now shipping to those in the US

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 09:42 AM PST

We had seen plenty of expected shipping dates for the Nexus 7 dock, however as of today — it has begun shipping. This applies to those in the US, however it looks like the dock is only shipping with one retailer at the moment. Those looking to make a purchase will want to head to the ExcaliberPC.com website where the dock is priced at $39.99.

IMG_295299 (1)

Of course, you also have to take shipping into consideration here. The shipping will vary depending on the location, however in this instance, they wanted a bit more than $10 to ship using FedEx. And even more to ship using the postal service. Simply put, you will have to decide whether having a dock is worth roughly $50.

In terms of what to expect, this is a fairly basic dock. You will get what is being described as a dock “with an attractive design that combines polished glass on the outside and durable-grip rubber on the inside.” More important here, you will be getting a dock with a microUSB port and 3.5mm audio jack. Basically, what you get is a dock that allows you to charge and/or play music through external speakers.

Otherwise, in addition to the ExcaliberPC.com listing, the Nexus 7 dock has also been spotted with B&H Photo. The B&H listing has the dock priced at $39.99, with an expected availability date as January 18. Finally, given we have seen some third-party retailers, we are also keeping an eye on the Google Play Store in hopes the Nexus 7 dock comes available (with a slightly lower price point).

Apple and Amazon “app store” trademark talks scheduled for March 21

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 08:43 AM PST

Back in early January we saw an update for the case that had Apple going after Amazon for the use of the term app store. At that time US District Judge Phyllis Hamilton ruled that there was no false advertising on the part of Amazon. Simply put, the judge dismissed the false advertising claim, however it left open the trademark claim.

Amazon-Appstore-540x332

Moving back up to the present day and we have word of a date. The details are coming by way of a Bloomberg report which notes that US Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Laporte in San Francisco has directed Apple and Amazon “to confer on March 21.” These talks will include the lead attorneys as well as anyone having “full authority to negotiate and settle the case.”

The interesting part here, the March 21, 2013 date will have this case in talks almost two years to the date of when Amazon originally launched the Appstore. The store launched in March 2011. Of course, it is important to remember that the March 21 event is just talks and the actual trial is set for August.

Otherwise, what Apple is trying to accomplish is to have Amazon blocked from using the term app store. Apple claims that Amazon is infringing on their trademark. Apple originally launched their App Store back in 2008. That all being said, given this has been ongoing for such a long time, the March talks may be a necessity, however we wouldn’t be surprised to see this go to trial (as scheduled) in August.

HTC M7 image render leaks showing a full front view

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 08:01 AM PST

The HTC M7 has received more than its fair share of attention up until this point. And while HTC was rumored to announce the M7 during CES, we now know that didn’t happen. Of course, there is always Mobile World Congress to hope and look forward to. The thought of an announcement aside though, it looks like an image of the M7 has recently been leaked.

HTC_M7_render

The image comes by way of @evleaks, who in the past has been spot on in terms of providing an early look at an unannounced device. Nonetheless, this image does come along with some warnings. To begin with, the image is a render (as opposed to in-the-wild style). According to the details coming along with the pic, this comes from an animation clip showing new users how to insert the SIM card.

The other warning comes in with the design and the lack of branding. As was pointed out, this could suggest that this is not a final design and that we may end up seeing something slightly different come an official announcement. Otherwise, some of the details that have come along with this render include the handset having an IR port, which would mean the handset would be capable of learning. Simply put, this means the HTC M7 would be capable of serving as a universal remote.

Aside from the IR port, the HTC M7 is also expected to have a 4.7inch 1080p display, quad-core 1.7GHz processor and Jelly Bean. And while this render may not have been what everyone had been hoping for in terms of a leak, it does offer some confirmation on a previous rumor that suggested HTC was going to ditch the capacitive buttons. But then again, we remember the previous warning and know that this may not be a final design.

MediaFire Android app lands in Google Play with 50GB of free storage

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 07:32 AM PST

MediaFire happens to be one of the more well known cloud storage solutions available. And while they have a nice offer, 50GB of free cloud-based storage (and a 200MB file upload size), there has been one item that may have kept them from being fully adopted by Android users — the lack of an app. That being said though, the MediaFire Android app has recently come available.

mediafire-app

And yes, it means you can now access your 50GB of cloud-storage from your Android device. Also for new users that may have been holding back because of the lack of on-the-go access — new users will also get the same amount of free storage. The app is available by way of the Google Play Store where it sits at version 1 with support for devices running Android 2.2 or later.

The app appears to have most of the features that one could want and/or hope for, however there seems to be at least one item that is missing. But before we get into the missing, lets get into the features that have been included. The MediaFire app will allow users to listen to audio files and watch video files as well as view documents, spreadsheets and presentations. You can also take and upload images (and videos) directly to your MediaFire account.

The app also allows the user to upload images from the gallery on your device, create new folders, manage existing folders and share files over email, SMS and through other Android apps. And with 50GB of storage, one may worry about finding items — rest assured in knowing that there is the ability to search. Finally, touching on the missing item, that would be batch uploads (and moves). Of course, with the features that are included, it seems the MediaFire Android app is off to a good start and while annoying, the lack of batch uploads will probably not be enough to keep many away.

Samsung SCH-I425 Godiva smartphone images leak

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST

We saw a bit of detail on a yet-to-be announced Samsung smartphone yesterday. The handset is the SCH-I425 “Godiva” and the leak included just a few of the basics in terms of specs. The handset had been believed to be heading towards Verizon Wireless as the Stratosphere III. And well, it looks like some images have since surfaced.

verizon-wireless-logo-540x218

Anyway, the pics do not confirm that the SCH-I425 will be the Stratosphere III, however they do show a handset that looks quite a bit like the previous Stratosphere handsets. The one key difference here, this handset does not feature a slide-out QWERTY which is something that was available on the past models.

There is also some Verizon Wireless branding, which sits in the expected location — on the front of the handset towards the top. On the bottom, sitting just below the display are four capacitive buttons. Otherwise, nothing all that surprising was revealed in the images. Well, aside from NFC being tucked in on the back cover.

samsung-godiva-image-leak

The images also show a device that is running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Of course, the previous leak had mentioned the SCH-I425 as running 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The handset is also expected to bring a 720p display (1280 x 720) along with a 1.4GHz processor. In the meantime, still no word from Samsung or Verizon Wireless just yet. That all being said, given the previous release history of the Stratosphere and we could be looking towards the fall of 2013 for a possible release.

Sony Xperia Z promo videos highlight the display, water resistance and more

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 06:34 AM PST

Sony unveiled the Xperia Z during CES 2013. The company was really pushing the water-resistance of the device during the show and it looks like that trend is being continued. Thankfully though, that is not all that Sony is showing off in regards to the Xperia Z. In fact, the company has been releasing Xperia Z promo videos on their YouTube channel.

XPERIA-Z-ZL-12-androidcommunity-540x447

The channel has a few vides that have been posted over the past few days. They include a look at (you guessed it) the water-resistance as well as the display and battery life management. There are also two videos that highlight the phone as a whole. That being said, lets kick things off with the water-resistance video (which can be seen below). Many have seen this before, in-fact we touching on this feature in our hands-on video. The key facts, the Xperia Z will be able to handle some rain as well as a drop in water such as a pool, bathtub or toilet. The handset can be submerged in up to 3.3 feet of water and will be ok with up to 30 minutes of submersion time.

The next video shows off the screen technology, which in this case means a handset with a BRAVIA Reality Display which Sony touts as bringing “the best combination of luminance, resolution and color gamut.” More to the point here, Sony believes the display on the Xperia Z will be able to replicate the colors that we have in our memories. The screen technology video can be seen below.

The battery life topic is always hot. Mostly because smartphones never seem to have enough battery life. Sony makes the comparison to some real-world items such as turning the lights off when you leave home and the fridge saving power by having the light off when the door is closed. Basically, Sony has introduced a battery Stamina Mode which will turn off functions you don’t need when the phone is in standby mode. This can be customized based on app, however once you leave standby mode, all functions come back to normal. Sony has said that by using Stamina Mode, you will be able to increase you standby time by up to four times.

Kite tablet runs Android 4.0 and Ubuntu with a full HD display for $400

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 04:38 PM PST

News is circulating about a rather impressive device from the Italian company DaVinci Mobile. It’s their new Kite-HD Android tablet that also manages to run Ubuntu 12.04 at the same time. The specs are rather impressive and it’s powered by Samsung‘s quad-core Exynos processor so read on for more details on this unique slate.

Screen Shot 2013-01-15 at 4.34.29 PM

According to the folks at Engadget this tablet is actually available right this minute for just over $400. What does that get you, you ask? The Kite HD tablet comes with a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 full HD display, and is powered by Samsung’s popular Exynos 4 quad 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. Add in Android and Ubuntu and things get a little interesting.

You’ll be enjoying Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as the main operating system, but then will be able to dual boot into Ubuntu 12.04 if you’d like. Then as far as performance that quad-core is accompanied by 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage for all your needs. To top it off we have a VGA front camera and 2.0 megapixel rear to snap a quick photo, as well as micro-USB, regular USB, and HDMI-out.

The tablet actually looks pretty impressive from some of their pictures, and the fact that they’ve got it running both ICS and Ubuntu is really exciting. All of that for $415 isn’t too bad of a deal if you ask us. We’re curious just how well the two operating systems play together, as well as the build quality of this slate. Most likely it won’t ever make it for sale in the states but it sure would be nice. More details and store links can be found at the via below.

Samsung Galaxy S II Jelly Bean updated delayed til February

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 03:47 PM PST

It looks like official updates for Samsung‘s highly popular Galaxy S II to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean have been delayed. We can’t technically call it delayed since it wasn’t announced, but previous reports had them coming before the end of the year and then delayed into early 2013. Back in December we mentioned they’d arrive in early 2013, and now reports have surfaced claiming the updates will start in February.

Screen Shot 2013-01-15 at 2.51.23 PM

Samsung has been busy updating all of their Galaxy S III flagship phones and popular Note II’s to the latest Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Bringing new features and multi-window modes to the phones. While we doubt the Galaxy S II will get all the same features, Jelly Bean will be a huge improvement.

The folks from CNET are reporting that a Samsung rep confirmed the update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S II will start next month in Singapore, then roll out to other regions in the following weeks. Naturally, the update will arrive first for the international i9100 (with the physical home button) then roll out for all those US models at a later date.

Reports are also confirming this will not be available over-the-air as usual, and users will be required to update manually using Samsung Kies PC program. Most of the Galaxy S II line got ICS back in June and July, and it looks like February and March will be Jelly Bean time. It’s nice to see Samsung keeping their promise and updating their highly popular devices. There’s still millions of Galaxy S II users, so we’re glad to see Samsung is working to deliver this update in a somewhat timely manor. Hit the links below for more details or to try out the recently leaked JB build.

TYLT Vu wireless charger and stand available for pre-order

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 03:04 PM PST

We saw a lot of awesome accessories and cases from the popular company TYLT at CES last week. Sadly most were geared towards the iPhone, but what we have below has Android all over it. TYLT’s impressive Vu Qi Wireless charger was hiding at their booth but today it’s available for pre-order. More details on this charger that doubles as a stand below.

Screen Shot 2013-01-15 at 2.08.00 PM

There’s plenty of different options when it comes to wireless charging. Energizer, PowerMat, JBL, and all those Lumia chargers come to mind. TYLT has a different idea though. Why drop your phone on a desk flat so you can’t see it when you can just add wireless charging right into a stand. The TYLT Vu does exactly that, and looks good doing it.

The TYLT Vu charger and stand will let you enjoy a book, watch some Google Play Movie rentals and more all while your phone charges at the same time. Why most wireless chargers lay flat is beyond us, this is the ideal design and something I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of. With devices like the Nexus 4, DROID DNA, and more all coming with wireless charging built-in expect to see a lot more stands like these.

What also helps make TYLT better than most is the fact that they have multiple charging coils throughout the stand. This means you can set the phone down any way you’d like. Landscape while viewing a video, portrait for anything else, and even toss more than one device on if you’d like. The TYLT Vu Qi Wireless Charger and stand comes in multiple fun colors like black, blue, yellow, and red, and is available right this minute for pre-order starting at $69.99. They’ll begin shipping on April 1st, so hopefully those Nexus 4′s have shipped from the Play Store by then. $70 is pretty expensive, but if you want wireless charging this is a decent solution.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 getting Jelly Bean update in the US

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 02:00 PM PST

Samsung‘s been updating all of their devices lately, but the Galaxy Note 10.1 seemed forgotten. After hearing reports it was coming soon today we can confirm Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is rolling out now to the US Galaxy Note 10.1 WiFi tablet. We saw Verizon’s LTE model last week at CES with 4.1.2, and now the rest of you will get to enjoy the same treat.

While most of Samsung’s devices released of late all run Jelly Bean, the Note 10.1 was stuck on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but today that will all change. You won’t notice a huge visual difference, but as you all know Jelly Bean brings tons of new features and goodies.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 and it’s stylus friend will get to enjoy everything we love on the Note II. Airview, multi-window modes and more will all be present after the update. For those curious what to expect with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean on their Note 10.1 check out the hands-on demonstration below from last weeks CES show. Everything will be the same, except for the Verizon branding.

You’ll be viewing previews with airview, multitasking with multiple windows, and using easy-clip to crop images and screenshots all with ease after the update. Not to mention Google Now and expandable notifications. As usual the OTA is rolling out as we speak, or you can manually update by checking in the about tablet settings or using Samsung Kies PC software. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Instapaper Android app update brings new features and bug fixes

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 01:49 PM PST

Those using the Instapaper app may want to fire up the Play Store and grab this latest update. The update has brought the Instapaper app up to version 1.2, however perhaps more important — it has brought a mix of fixes and improvements as well as some new features. Just to begin with, the update changelog notes performance improvements and bug fixes.

Nothing specific as to which bugs were taken care of, however it is hard to complain when things are getting fixed. Same goes for the performance improvements — nothing specific as to what or how, but improvements are generally a welcomed thing. Moving to something more important, the new features.

These include Pagination, which is the ability to scroll by full pages and the ability to scroll by tilting. These can both be adjusted by heading into the Settings under the option for Scroll Mode. This update also added in-line footnotes and a sepia mode. Those looking for the sepia mode should remain in the Settings and check under the option for Background. Of course, the Light and Dark options both remain available.

Additionally, this update also added something new, it is called The Feature. This is a section of editor recommended articles and looks like it could be nice for those who have reached the end of the Instapaper queue. Well, that is assuming one is able to reach the end of their Instapaper queue. With that, the Instapaper app remains available for devices running Android 2.3.3 or later and priced at $2.99. Of course, this update is free for those who have previously purchased the app.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z details begin to leak

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 12:30 PM PST

Sony unveiled the Xperia Z smartphone during CES, and well, it looks like a “Z” tablet may also be in the works. The details have yet to be confirmed by Sony, however it is looking as if they are getting ready to announce the Tablet Z. The tablet is expected to have a 10.1-inch Full HD display and arrive during the second quarter of 2013.

Aside from an HD display, the Tablet Z is also said to feature a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 6000 mAh battery, 2.2 megapixel front-facing camera and an 8.1 megapixel rear-facing camera. Other goodies will include NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and LTE connectivity.

The tablet should arrive running Jelly Bean. At the time of these details, that is said to be Android 4.1.2. Otherwise, the Tablet Z is expected to have a design that is similar to the Xperia Z smartphone. And taking that another step further, the Tablet Z will also be waterproof and dustproof with IP55 and IP57 ratings.

Aside from the specs, the tablet is currently sporting a codename of “Pollux” and with a model number of SO-03E. The Tablet Z is expected to arrive first in Japan and then later in other markets. That all being said, keep in mind these are early leaks which means details can and likely will change before an official announcement. Of course, even as it stands, these specs would be a decent improvement over the Tablet S which featured a 1280 x 800 display, Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

LG Optimus G2 reportedly coming this fall with 1.9 GHz quad-core

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 12:27 PM PST

New reports have begin to surface stating that LG plans to introduce their next-gen Optimus G2 in the fall. It’s being reported that their new model will arrive right around the 1 year anniversary for the original. Previous reports had many thinking LG would announce the phone last week at CES, but now late February for Mobile World Congress will probably be the stage at which the device is unveiled.

Screen-Shot-2012-10-22-at-1.59.50-PM-540x333

We’ve already seen multiple leaks and benchmark reports showing a new LG Optimus G2 in the works, so at this point it’s only a matter of time. However, we’ve seen conflicting reports on how big the display will be. Leaks have shown both a 5-inch 1920 x 1080p screen, and latest leaks have that increased to 5.5-inches.

New reports from CNET have appeared stating late fall is when we’ll see their new Optimus G2 complete with the 5-inch display and not the 5.5-inch model. The original Optimus G was the first smartphone with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core, and we’re being told the recently announced Snapdragon 600 series will grace the G2. That’s Qualcomm’s latest and greatest quad-core processor claiming speeds of 1.9 GHz while offering 40% better performance and up to 30% better battery life.

Qualcomm also announced their Snapdragon 800 series 2.3 GHz quad-core processors. Stating they’d arrive in Q3 so there’s a slight possibility LG will hold out for that latest and greatest instead. This is where the other rumor from CNET comes in. They are claiming LG will offer a “stop-gap” device with a 5.5-inch display before the Optimus G2 running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This will beat Samsung to the punch with a top-tier device. Then their G2 will have the latest and greatest Snapdragon quad-core, and Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. If these rumors are true it looks like LG will showcase some awesome phones next month in Barcelona and be prepared for an impressive summer and fall of powerhouse smartphones.

Is anyone looking forward to the Optimus G2 already? Or are you more excited for the Samsung Galaxy S IV?

Huawei Ascend D2 launches in China tomorrow with dual-SIM option

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 11:43 AM PST

It’s only been about a week since the folks from Huawei announced their new flagship smartphone at CES, and it is already set to hit the shelves in parts of China. The companies new Ascend D2 5-inch 1080p smartphone will apparently be going up for sale from China Telecom tomorrow with a dual-SIM option, and can be yours for about $640. Pretty big price to pay.

P1050297-540x304

Announced at CES, we were able to get a quick hands-on with the Ascend D2 and came away rather impressed. The smartphone will be available for select Chinese users tomorrow, but we’re expecting their WCDMA version to arrive outside of China soon as well, not to mention possibly making its way to the US.

According to Huawei’s recent announcements on Sina Weibo the smartphone will be available bright and early from China Telecom for just ¥3,990 and features the usual for China dual-SIM option. The phone is rather impressive with a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 32GB of storage, a 5-inch 1920 x 1080p HD display and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This is a pretty impressive phone, but we’ll be waiting awhile before we can get our hands on it for a full review.

Stock probably won’t last long as high end phones in China usually go quite fast, not to mention this is a pretty solid offering from Huawei. We haven’t heard when their 6.1 Ascend Mate will hit China Telecom’s shelves but will update as soon as we hear additional details. Who’s buying the D2 tomorrow?
