Tutorial: Install Android 4.2 on the Samsung Galaxy S3 (All Variants)

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 12:40 PM PST

Let’s face it, Android can be a bit fragmented at times. But who says we need to rely on carriers to push updates? Android is much more than a closed OS, ran by carriers. Thanks to the developers modifying Android, we can choose who we rely on for future updates and when we want to receive them. So with the new release of Android 4.2, there is no need to wait for your carrier to push it out, just install it now, here’s how:

Prerequisites:

  • Rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 (how to)
  • Unlocked Bootloader (how to)

Downloads:

Procedure

  • Place the two files on your SD Card
    •  *Download the files directly on the device to place them in your internal storage
  • Download Rom Manager
    • *This is a free root required application that allows you to boot into recovery, manage roms, and manage backups.
  • Reboot into Recovery
    • *Using Rom Manager, navigate to “Reboot Recovery”
  • Backup your current rom
    • *Using the volume rocker as up/down, navigate to “backup”, and select with the power button.
  • Clear Data and Cache
    • *Using your volume rocker as up/down, navigate to “Wipe Data/ Factory Reset”, and select with the power button. Then navigate to “Wipe Cache partition”, and select with the power button.
  • Install the Android 4.2 rom
    • *Using your volume rocker as up/down, navigate to “Install Zip from Internal”, then navigate to the “download” folder, and select the Cyanogenmod 10.1 .zip file.
  • Install the GAPPS
    • *Using your volume rocker as up/down, navigate to “Install Zip from Internal”, then navigate to the “download” folder, and select the GAPPS .zip file
  • Reboot and Enjoy
    • *You’re done!

Please remember that rooting and flashing custom roms to your device can be very, very dangerous. AndroidGuys.com and myself are not responsible for any problems that may occur during this process. For an added tutorial, please view the attached video for a visual step-by-step tutorial.

LG VS870 could be Verizon’s LG Escape

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 08:42 AM PST

In a recent clearing at the FCC, the LG VS870 may be making its way to Verizon in the near future. The VS870 is virtually the same device as the LG Escape, a 4.3″ budget phone on AT&T. If all pans out, the VS870 looks to be a Verizon variant with the same 4.3″ screen, now with added 4G LTE and Qi wireless charging. The LG Escape offered exceptionally good battery life for the price, hopefully they are able to keep that with the added LTE, making for a suitable budget Android phone.

T-Mobile the only carrier not confirmed to offer HTC M7

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 08:34 AM PST

m7_cropped_leak_wildT-Mobile USA is the only major carrier that has yet to sign on for the upcoming HTC M7, according to the often-correct @evleaks. AT&T is the third wireless provider to jump on board with the device, following Sprint and Verizon. Those two, by the way, have been tied to the device for a while now.

With roughly a month to go before Mobile World Congress, there’s plenty of time for T-Mobile to jump in line. Truth be told, I find it ridiculous to think that the carrier would not want to offer the same phone as the three bigger players. For a company who continues to struggle without the iPhone, T-Mobile should be doing their part to keep pace on every other front.

As a recap, the HTC M7 is expected to be unveiled at MWC in late February. Thus far, leaked renders and images suggest a form factor that blends the One X+ and Droid DNA with a splash of Windows Phone 8X in the mix.

Rumored specifications, which are always subject to change, include:

  • Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean
  • HTC Sense 5.0 UI
  • 4.7-inch 1080p 468ppi display
  • Quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 processor
  • 32GB internal memory
  • 2GB RAM
  • 13-megapixel rear camera
  • 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • No expandable storage card slot
  • 2,300 mAh battery
  • LTE/HSPA+ connectivity
  • Beats Audio enhancements
  • IR Port (universal remote control capabilities)

International Galaxy S2 Jellybean Update with Nature UX

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 07:58 AM PST

A few lucky Galaxy S2 owners recently received an OTA (over the air) update for Android 4.1.2 JellyBean. This update brings the beloved, Google Now, Project Butter, and expandable notifications. This update brings more than Android 4.1 however, with this update, TouchWiz Nature UX was also updated.

Samsung’s Nature UX is the same version of TouchWiz found on the Galaxy S3. Nature UX introduces features like smart stay, a more refined interface, and a few new Samsung applications. Currently, this update has only been spotted on Spanish International devices, but there is no doubt that this update will make its way to other regions in the coming weeks. As for the US variants, our fate lies in the hands of our carriers.

Lookout intros two new features to help fight lost and stolen phones

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 07:51 AM PST

lookout_appLookout Mobile Security today announced a pair of new features for the Android application. Designed to help combat lost and stolen phones, one comes in the free version while the other is in the Android Premium client.

  • New Lock Cam feature notifies you if anyone tries to access your device, whether it has been stolen, or if it is just someone else trying to peek. Lock Cam silently takes a picture with the front-facing camera of your device of anyone who enters an incorrect password three times into your lock screen. You'll then receive an email with the picture, and the location of your device. Available for Lookout for Android – FREE.
  • Also, now you can add a customized message up to 300 characters to your Lookout Lock Screen, so if your phone is lost, you can help the (hopefully) good Samaritan who finds it,  return it. Available for Lookout for Android Premium ($2.99 month / $29.99 year).

Have you downloaded and installed Lookout yet on your Android smartphone? You should, it’s one of our 50 apps you must install before the world ends!

Nexus 7 Case-Compatible Desktop Sync and Charge Cradle review

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 07:10 AM PST

nexus7_cradle

Nexus 7 owners looking to give their beloved Android a slightly more permanent spot in the office or home may want to check out the Nexus 7 Case-Compatible Desktop Sync and Charge Cradle from MobileFun.com.

It’s worth noting that this is not the official Asus product and does not employ any of the connectors along the left side of the Nexus 7. No, this one uses the microUSB port from the bottom of your tablet.  With that out of the way, let’s dive in.

The cradle itself is almost entirely plastic and provides a very light experience that can be moved about quite easily. Unfortunately, this is also presents an issue when removing the tablet. Seeing as it is not all that heavy, it takes two hands to undock the Nexus 7 from the microUSB port. Yeah, it’s a tight connection

Google yesterday released their specifics on earnings from Q4 2012, to include:

  • Some $14.42 billion in revenue, up 36 percent compared to Q4 of 2011.
  • Motorola, which Google continues to operate as a separate company, saw revenue of $1.51 billion, but an operating loss of $353 million.
  • Google has about $48 billion cash on hand
  • Google’s head count remained relatively even to Q3, with some 37,544 at Google proper, 11,113 at Motorola Mobility and 5,204 at Motorola Home.

Google did mention heavily in the actual earnings call that their Motorola merger is still not complete, and that the 12-18 month timeline of completion is not only still in full swing, but also unchangeable.

According to Google,

We do care about profitability, and that is our goal with every one of the areas where we invest, We’re not in the business of losing money with Motorola.

AT&T acquires Alltel’s 585,000 customers and spectrum bands for $780 million in cash

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 05:09 AM PST

Well, this was slightly unexpected. AT&T has announced that they will completely acquire the Alltel brand, to include all of their 585,000 customers and spectrum. The deal set AT&T back a hard $780 million, a price tag which AT&T plans to make up for with its new found 700, 850, and 1900 MHz bands of spectrum. AT&T will also get all of Alltel’s network licenses and wireless properties.

Alltel is currently a mostly rural area provider, service in mainly Georgia, Idaho, North Carolina, Ohio, and South Carolina. This leads us to believe that AT&T is planning on gobbling up this market and spectrum for their continuing LTE rollout.

Presser after the break.
