HTC M7 set to have “simple and clean” UI, all-black design

Posted: 04 Jan 2013 09:32 AM PST

the rumored HTC M7 has gotten some insider information leaked, and HTCSource has the scoop. According to the source, the HTC M7 will be running Android 4.1.2 (which has a possibility of being updated before it is released), and a new version of HTC Sense, more than likely 5.0.

On top of this, the source says that the new Sense will have a brand new, “simple and clean” UI overhaul. According to HTCSource:

“The lock screen and HTC apps have received a huge facelift and HTC has tweaked the software to make it easier to use. One example of these new tweaks is the on-screen volume controls which features a shortcut that jumps directly into the phone's volume settings page. Unfortunately, our source has debunked the recent rumor that the HTC M7 will feature on-screen buttons.

The physical design of the HTC M7 is said to carry a few design cues from the HTC Droid DNA with an black shell and a "very nice looking beveled edge" along the screen. While previous rumors indicated that the M7 would be constructed with a unibody aluminum shell, our source says that the phone he's seen is constructed with the same materials as the Droid DNA.”

As far as specs go, the device is said to come with a quad-core Qualcomm APQ8064 CPU, 4.7″ 1080×1920 display, 32GB internal storage (possibly with no expansion), and is being tested as we speak on Sprint’s LTE network. We should be seeing the device in Q1 of 2013, and we hope to see more info as time goes on. Be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S4?

Posted: 04 Jan 2013 08:16 AM PST

Oh, rumor mill… you never fail us. The folks over at SamMobile have gotten an insider tip, complete with what very well may be a leaked image of the yet-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy S4.

galaxysiv

According to SM:

We can't 100% confirm if this is indeed the Galaxy S IV but the picture he sent us looks really sharp and doesn't look fake at all. The design of the device looks also very similar to the design of the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Premier, which makes this picture more authentic.

By looking at the picture of the device we observed a few things, the device will use on-screen buttons as there is no home-button present on the device (Finally), the bezel around the device is much thinner and the device features a large display.

While the insider didn’t include any specs, the rumored specs that have been floating around her:

  • Exynos 5450 Quad-Core CPU clocked at 2.0GHz
  • Mali-T658 GPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 4.99" SuperAMOLED FULL HD resolution (1080×1920) Display
  • 13 Megapixel Rear Facing Camera
  • 2 Megapixel Front Facing Camera
  • Android 4.2.1 (Out of the box)

What are your thoughts? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

What is Google’s true aim with rumored X Phone?

Posted: 04 Jan 2013 07:40 AM PST

Some readers may recall recently reading that Motorola Mobility is making an Android powered device codenamed ‘X-Phone‘. While the known details are somewhat limited at this time, it seems pretty obvious that this may be Google’s attempt at directly taking on Apple… and Samsung.

Sure, one of the main ideas behind acquiring Motorola Mobility was not just to get hold of the patents, but also use them as a main hardware partner in future ‘Pure Google’ devices.  Done right, Google will use Motorola to make a direct impact in the very mobile market they have helped shape over the years.

With Samsung currently enjoying nearly half of all Android activations, Google could be interpreted as ‘losing control of its own operating system.  What happens if Samsung decides to change things up and go with another OS? What happens if their Windows Phone efforts are just as promising? Will relying on partners like Samsung come back to haunt Google? After all, we never hear specifically about how the Galaxy devices ‘run Android’. Is Google really benefiting from the way Samsung uses Android?

There is a very interesting read over at Unwired View which posits that Google is seeking to wrest back control of its own OS with this X Phone. If you’ve got a few minutes, we definitely recommend checking it out.

Do you think Google is worried about how Samsung employs Android for its mobile efforts? Is Google trying to go head to head with Apple and create the entire user experience at both the hardware and software level? Are they looking to become the dominant player in their own sandbox? What is Google’s true aim with rumored X Phone?
