Google Nexus 7 tablet in the works with Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 11:12 AM PST

Many are speculating that Google and ASUS will be unveiling and announcing a new Nexus 7 tablet at this years Google I/O event in May. Last year they debuted the exciting $199 Nexus 7 with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and this year we’re hearing a next-gen Nexus 7 is coming with an upgraded 1080p HD display, and along with it will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor.

n7-qual

Back in January reports and rumors started floating around that Google and ASUS look to continue their partnership on a 7-inch portable and budget-friendly tablet, and this seems to back that up. The initial report suggested a thinner bezel, more industrial design, the HD display and more as mentioned above. And now we’re hearing a few more reports that are getting us excited.

Some reports and analysis were dug up from the folks at UnwiredView stating Google will jump ship from NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 (or possibly the Tegra 4) and opt for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro for multiple reasons. One being excellent battery life as Qualcomm’s continued to improve, and then the other main factor being 3G/4G LTE radios under the hood. Having the entire Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC powering the device would be a good move to help keep costs down.

"Supply chain conversations indicate two reasons for Google's selection of the Snapdragon APQ8064 over Tegra 4: competitive pricing, and a decision to single-source the application processor and 3G/4G modem to simplify logistics and create a fully pin-compatible platform interface." – Analyst Michael McConnell

Hopefully this Nexus 7 supports 4G LTE. As a reminder Google I/O is set to take place this year on May 15-17th and Google should have plenty of exciting things to show off. Those include Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, the rumored Motorola X-Phone being developed in partner with Google, as well as this Nexus 7 tablet. Either way this year should offer another amazing and exciting Google I/O event.

Ubuntu for smartphones coming in October with developer access in February

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 11:04 AM PST

We spent a bit of hands-on time with Ubuntu for smartphones during CES. If you remember back, this is the mobile version of Ubuntu and it has been demonstrated running on the Galaxy Nexus. It looks like a bit of good news has arrived though, talk of availability. Except, as we often see with smartphone releases, this one is looking like it will initially only be available in limited markets.

20130108_162118-540x325

The details are coming by way of a recent Wall Street Journal report which notes that Ubuntu for smartphones will be launching in October. According to Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu for smartphones will be launching in two large geographic markets. The key here, he has yet to reveal which two. When asked about North America, Shuttleworth said that is “absolutely a key market for Ubuntu.”

Aside from launching in October, Shuttleworth also said that a developer preview will be available later this month. The developer preview will be available for download in “late February” and should be good for those looking to get a head start on app development. Or, we suppose it may also be nice for someone that is looking to play and happens to have a spare Galaxy Nexus laying around.

One likely important factor surrounding a US launch is going to be the carriers. Further details from Shuttleworth note that Ubuntu for smartphones has attracted some interest from carriers. There was not any mention of specific carriers, however there was a comment about how some were “eager” to break up what Google and Apple have going with Android and iOS at the moment. Either way, we are more than a bit curious to get Ubuntu for smartphones up and running on a Galaxy Nexus of our own, though we must admit that we are not all that certain how well it will do in the mobile operating system wars.

Tegra 4 powered Chromebook leaks with hints of Android

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 10:36 AM PST

We’ve been hearing quite a lot lately about Google’s other OS, that being their Chrome OS powering a new wave of ultra-portable laptops. The Chromebook is still in its infancy and the past few days we’ve seen reports that Google may in fact be working on their very own Chromebook. Now it looks like it could be powered by the new NVIDIA Tegra 4, and even have some Android included.

chrome-logo

A new NVIDIA Tegra 4 quad-core Cortex-A15 powered Chromebook with the code name “puppy” is apparently out and in the wild as we speak, being used by a few lucky developers. Reports from ChromeStory have uncovered the new Chromebook, the details regarding the Tegra 4, and even hints of Android as well.

We’re not sure if this will be a laptop or maybe some sort of Chromebox, or even something else at this point. Yesterday reports surfaced that Google has their very own device in the works with a Retina display being dubbed the Chromebook Pixel. Here’s where this gets interesting. Google’s used the term “dogfooding” while testing smartphones in the past, and this device is codenamed puppy — so it’s possibly the device we’ve been hearing about coming directly from Google.

Interestingly enough the leak doesn’t reveal too many details, but according to ChromeStory there’s tons of Android code being found in the leak. If Google ends up delivering their own device with a Tegra 4, an HD “Pixel” display, and possibly even dual-boot Android functions this would be amazing. The last bit seems a bit farfetched, but we’re still hopeful.

ASUS ME371MG tablet leak shows a 7-inch display and Intel processor

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 10:14 AM PST

We have seen details on a few ASUS tablets as of late. Details have recently surfaced on the MeMO Pad 10 and MeMO Pad 7, however it looks as if the company has another 7-inch tablet in the works. One with an Intel processor. The tablet is sporting a model number of ME371MG, but keep in mind, we have yet to see any official word from ASUS.

grwew

That warning out of the way, lets get into the specs that have been revealed thus far. The tablet is said to be powered by an Intel Atom Z2420 processor and with PowerVR SGX540 graphics. Other specs include the 7-inch display which is shown as being IPS and with a resolution of 1280 x 800. The tablet should also launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Aside from the few mentioned, the ASUS ME371MG specs round out as follows; 1GB of RAM, 8/16/32GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, 4270 mAh battery, 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera and a 3 megapixel rear-facing camera as well as the usual array of sensors to include an accelerometer, digital compass, proximity and light sensor.

Otherwise, the tablet is said to weigh in at 340 grams with measurements of 196.6 x 120.1 x 10.4mm. Aside from this one leak, the details on this tablet are at a minimum. That is really just to say that a release timeframe or possible price has yet to be mentioned. One could hope to see ASUS make an official announcement during Mobile World Congress, but time will tell how accurate that thought will be. So how about it, anyone interested in seeing an ASUS tablet with an Intel processor?

Gameloft’s multiplayer FPS Blitz Brigade video hits the web – looks amazing

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 10:06 AM PST

The developers at Gameloft have a pretty epic looking team-based first person shooter game coming soon for Android. A few weeks back we showed you all a quick teaser for the upcoming game called Blitz Brigade, and now an actual gameplay trailer is available for your viewing pleasure below. This actually shows up how fun this game will really be.

Screen-Shot-2013-01-25-at-3.54.19-PM-540x338

Our initial impressions immediately thought of the classic shooter Team Fortress 2 on desktops, and this new gameplay trailer we still have pretty much the same thoughts. Although that certainly isn’t a bad thing because TF2 is still one of the best shooters around. Think awesome cartoon characters running around all silly with rocket launchers and heavily artillery. Sounds great right?

This will be a multiplayer team-based shooter for Android smartphones and tablets, and we can’t wait to get our hands on this new game. As we said before this looks to be a nice mash-up of TF2 and Battlefield Heroes all rolled into one — for our favorite mobile devices. Check it out below:

Gameloft explains it by saying “War just got a whole lot crazier” and we have a feeling this game won’t disappoint. There will be 5 unique and great looking characters to choose from (as shown above) tons of weapons, explosives, rocket launchers and upgrades. Expect different level classes, multiple maps, and fun vehicles to cause mayhem. There will also be single-player campaign levels for those who don’t want to get online and play with your fellow Android peers. Stay tuned as we’ll update once it arrives in the Play Store.

Samsung and Chillingo to launch the “100% Indie” app portal on March 4

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 09:40 AM PST

Samsung, along with EA’s mobile game publishing division, Chillingo have announced a new partnership that will bring something called 100% Indie. This program is aimed at increasing the availability of indie apps. The 100% Indie program is set to kick off on March 4 and takes its name from the revenue scheme.

100-percent-indie-540

You see, Samsung and Chillingo will be letting indie developers keep 100 percent of the revenue earned. The 100 percent offer does come with a time limit though, in this case, the first 6 months from when the app launches. After that time is over, the developer will have a 90/10 percent split (where they keep the 90). This will remain until the end of the first year when the split goes to 80/20. The changes wrap after the second year when the split hits the more familiar sounding 70/30 percent.

Bottom line here, this sounds like a nice option for indie developers to keep a bit more of the revenue. Aside from being a potential perk for developers looking to launch an app, this should also have some perks for Samsung and Chillingo. As for Samsung, keep in mind, these apps will be available by way of the Samsung Apps store. Basically, this could further tie Samsung device owners into the Samsung ecosystem.

One key point that developers should know, using the 100% Indie program will not restrict you from publishing elsewhere. According to the Reuters report, this program is not exclusive and developers will be able to simultaneously publish their titles other app stores such as with Google or Amazon. Finally, developers looking for a bit more information can head to the 100% Indie website which can be found using this link.

Samsung Galaxy Note II in Pink arrives just in time for Valentine’s Day

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 09:38 AM PST

Samsung’s Galaxy Note II smartphone tablet has been pretty popular lately. After initially launching with just two color options then getting a few more added last month, it looks like Samsung will continue their tradition and release this smartphone in Berry Pink. Just like the original Note before it the Pink Galaxy Note II has surfaced over at Samsung’s website.

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-II-Pink-1

Just in time for Valentine’s Day they’ll be delivered a Pink version of their device for that special lady in your life. Don’t forget the box of chocolates, even though I’ve heard it’s only the thought that counts. This marks the fifth color for the phablet. Coming in white, grey, brown, ruby wine red, and now pink. Who’s getting excited?

Nothing about the Galaxy Note II has changed here except for the color. That means you’ll still enjoy that awesome 5.5-inch HD display, Samsung’s quad-core processor, as well as the near latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Doesn’t that S-Pen stylus look amazing in pink? You’ll be drawing on that screen and creating content in no time. You’ll still enjoy an 8 megapixel camera, 4G LTE, and the 3,100 mAh battery for awesome all day battery life.

So far Samsung hasn’t actually announced this color option, but most likely an official statement will be coming soon. Not all of their pink devices have made it to the states but this will be arriving in at least Taiwan, that’s for sure. Previous Pink phones eventually were sold throughout Europe, so we’ll keep an eye out for more details from Samsung. We’re more excited about the upcoming rumored 6.3-inch Galaxy Note III, but that’s just us. Who’s getting this phone for Valentine’s Day?

OUYA promising a new game console each year

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 09:09 AM PST

It looks like the OUYA game console will be following the model we often see with mobile phones. That is to say, it looks like they have plans to release a new console each year. The details are coming out of the DICE 2013 conference where CEO Julie Uhrman said that their strategy will be “very much similar to the mobile strategy.”

controllerCropped-e1359051633295-540x392

For those who need a bit more, Uhrman went on to say that they will be releasing a new OUYA every year and that we can look forward to seeing an OUYA 2 and an OUYA 3. A bit nicer than simply having a new console each year, further comments from the CEO mentioned about how they will be taking advantage of “faster, better processors” as well as falling prices. She didn’t offer any specifics in terms of a processor, however given the current generation OUYA has a Tegra 3, just maybe we will see a future model powered by a Tegra 4.

The improvements in future generation OUYA consoles could also mean additional storage space. A key point here will be to retain support for older models as new consoles are introduced. This appears to be something that was considered as Uhrman noted that “all the games will be backward compatible.” Basically, this means those who are waiting on the original OUYA will not have to worry. And honestly, with the OUYA not even released and already hearing talk of future models — we realize some may have been a bit concerned.

Otherwise, as we have been expecting, those who backed the OUYA game console on Kickstarter can expect the console to be delivered in March. Moving forward, those who pre-ordered direct from OUYA will likely see a delivery in April and then the retail availability is expected to begin in June. Finally, those who are waiting on a console to arrive or those who are still considering a purchase — make sure to check out our OUYA Starter Guide which details the apps and gear you will need on day one.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean roll-out begins for the Sony Xperia T and Xperia V

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 08:28 AM PST

Sony Mobile has recently offered up some updated details for Jelly Bean on 2012 Xperia devices. In short, according to details from Sony, the Jelly Bean roll-out will begin this week on select devices. The initial list includes two handsets with the promise of one more to come next month.

android-jelly-bean-logo

The lucky two include the Xperia T and Xperia V, which means users of either of those handsets will want to be on the lookout for an update notification to arrive. The handset scheduled for next month is the Xperia TX, though as of now that has been left as a general sounding “next month.” The update will be arriving as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and Sony has said they have been working to blend the Sony Xperia software with Jelly Bean to create an “optimum user experience.”

Fancy talk aside, this means that aside from the Jelly Bean goodies, Xperia users will also see updated versions of the Sony Media apps to include WALKMAN, Album and Movies. The update also includes increased options for personalization, improved app organization and search and improved camera functionality.

Shifting over to the Jelly Bean specific items and we have Project Butter along with Google Now, Google Voice Search and the enhanced notifications. With that, Xperia T and Xperia V users will have the option to download the update over-the-air or using the PC Companion or Bridge for Mac apps. Bottom line though, keep an eye out for that notification.

Wikipad 7-inch Android gaming tablet to arrive this spring for $249

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 07:59 AM PST

While many were likely expecting news for the 10.1-inch Wikipad gaming tablet, it looks like the company has decided to shrink things down just a bit. Simply put, the 7-inch Wikipad pricing and availability details have been revealed. Of course, for those who are interested in the larger Wikipad, rest assured as that model is still noted as being “forthcoming.”

wikipadding

As for the 7-inch Wikipad, the reasoning in regards to the smaller display comes from Fraser Townley, President of Sales, Wikipad, Inc who said that they “wanted to get Wikipad into our community’s hands and what we found was that the smaller 7″ form factor just seemed right.” Speaking of the display, aside from measuring in at 7-inches, it will arrive as an IPS display with an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a resolution of 1280 x 800.

Other specs for the 7-inch Wikipad include a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot with support for cards up to 32GB in size and what is being referred to as an “ultra-light and thin chassis.” The tablet will weigh in at 0.71 pounds and measures in at 0.42 inches thick. Remaining specs include a non-slip back, 5-point multi-touch, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera.

As far as the gaming aspect, the Wikipad will have an attachable dual-analog controller and given the processor — will have games from the Tegra Zone. Wikipad also noted PlayStation Mobile and Big Fish Games as partners. For those wondering about the version of Android, the Wikipad will be running 4.1 Jelly Bean. Specs aside, let us get back to the price and availability. The price will be $249 and the tablet is expected to arrive in the spring. So far we have yet to see anything specific in terms of a date.

LG Optimus G Pro image leaks along with updated specs

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 07:34 AM PST

We have seen some official details on the LG Optimus G Pro in the past. Those arrived a few weeks back and if you remember, they came by way of a wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo. Those details included some specs, however the images at the time were nothing more than a render. As of today though, it appears as if an in-the-wild style image of the Optimus G Pro has surfaced.

LG-Optimus-G-Pro-phone

Perhaps more interesting here, this image has come along with some specs. The interesting part about the specs is that they are showing some differences as to what was announced for Japan and NTT DoCoMo. To begin with, the NTT DoCoMo announcement had the Optimus G Pro as sporting a 5-inch 1080p display and this latest leak is showing the handset to have a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display at 1920 x 1080. It appears as if LG has at least two variants of the Optimus G Pro.

Other goodies in this round of Optimus G Pro specs include LTE and HSPA+ connectivity along with a quad-core 1.7GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera, 13 megapixel rear-facing camera, 3140 mAh battery, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

For the most part, these specs all match up with what we had seen from NTT DoCoMo. Aside from the display the main differences came with the battery (previously a 3000 mAh) and the front-facing camera which was previously a 2.4 megapixel. This particular model is expected to eventually arrive in the US as well as Europe and China. While not yet confirmed by LG, it is looking as if an official announcement will arrive during Mobile World Congress.

RunKeeper 3.0 for Android exits beta with new features and a new look

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 07:11 AM PST

RunKeeper 3.0 was released a few days back in beta form. The folks at RunKeeper offered the app for those willing to sideload the APK file and as fans of the app, we naturally took a look. In fact, we not only took a look at RunKeeper 3.0, but continued to use it right up until this morning when v3.0 landed in the Google Play Store.

rk-001

This one seems quite simple, if you are using RunKeeper on Android — you will want to grab this update. The only case we can see for not updating is if you happen to be 100 percent sold on the look and/or layout of your currently installed version. RunKeeper 3.0 brings a new look and some new features. For one, the app has been given a complete redesign and if you are running the app on a device with 4.0 or later, you will notice the Holo theme.

Another nice perk with RunKeeper 3.0 is the ‘Me’ tab which is now a central place for all your personal data including your activity totals (including the total miles for the week), personal records and progress towards goals. You are also prompted to set a goal on the ‘Me’ tab if you have yet to already set one. Other goodies that arrived along with this update include in-activity splits, workout reminders and improved audio cues.

The workout reminders can be set and adjusted by heading into the settings and scrolling down to “Workout Reminder.” From that point you can set the reminder for a certain number of days and then for a specific time on that day. Touching on the improved audio cues and this is simply having more options available. You can now set cues from 1 minute up to 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can also set cues based on distance with pre-set options from every quarter mile to every 10 miles. With that, those looking for RunKeeper 3.0 can follow this link to the Google Play Store.

HTC M7 could arrive as soon as March 8

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 06:45 AM PST

Following up on the previous HTC M7 release date rumors and it looks like we have some further evidence pointing towards a March 8 release date. This date was previously mentioned at the end of last month and at that time we were referring to US availability. This time around we are once again seeing the same March 8 date, however the details are coming by way of a French retailer.

HTC-M7-Phone-House

This leak has arrived by way of the French language FrAndroid blog who have posted what appears to be a sales flyer for Phone House. According to details in the flyer, the HTC M7 will be selling for a contract-free 649.99 EUR. While the dollar amounts do not always make for an exact translation between currencies, that would be nearly $900 in terms of US dollars. In this case, we at least hope that translation will not hold.

Otherwise, the flyer is showing some specs and an image. The specs are what we have been seeing in the rumors and note the M7 as having a 4.7-inch full HD display, 32GB of internal storage, NFC, 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and 4G connectivity. The flyer also mentions that handset as having Sense 5. No specific mention of Android, however that has been shown to be Jelly Bean.

The one catch here, the image of the M7. This pic is showing an older render of the M7, which does cause us to wonder about the accuracy. Then again, this could be a case of a rough layout for the flyer in which the image will be swapped out once the official pics are available. Regardless though, we are expecting to learn the official details for the M7 during the February 19 HTC event.

LG continues to tease in the lead up to MWC 2013

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 06:27 AM PST

LG Mobile dropped a little teaser on their official Facebook page yesterday. That teaser was in image and text form and was throwing around some fancy sounding terms such as a “new series” of mobile phones that would be arriving with an “unexpected distinction.” And well, it looks like LG has since released a Mobile World Congress teaser video as follow-up.

lg-teaser-screen-540

The one catch here, before anyone thinks we are going to be given a look at something. Despite this being a video, it is once again focused on buzz words. The video is on the shorter side, measuring in at just 36 seconds and kicks things off by saying that a “breakthrough will be made at MWC 2013.”

From here they kick off into the buzz words with some of the highlights coming in as premium, limitless, ultimate, innovative, professional and powerful. Of course, that is just the beginning and things shift to speedy, confident, fresh, stylish, trendy, edgy and smart. But they all lead up to the comment about making a world of difference. Basically, LG has dropped a 36 second video that is filled with text.

Needless to say, we are more than a bit curious. We just wonder about the potential level of disappointment though. After all, with so many buzz words being thrown around — it seems LG may have a hard time living up to what some may be imagining. As a reminder, Mobile World Congress will take place between February 25 and 28 and Android Community will be on-site to bring you the latest.

Google Chromebook Pixel leaks with retina-like touchscreen

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 04:33 PM PST

The folks from Google have been pushing their Chromebooks pretty hard lately. With options of any shape and size available from multiple laptop manufacturers including Samsung. However, it looks like Google will soon be taking matters into their own hands (think CR-48) and releasing their own device rumored to be the Google Chromebook Pixel. There’s a neat video and some pictures that have leaked sharing all types of information.

chromebook-pixel-580x325

While many wish Google Chrome OS and Android would blend together, we’re still not too convinced that will be happening any time soon. However, now that we’re seeing a full HD 2560 x 1700 resolution option from Google with full touchscreen abilities – we’re starting to have wishful thoughts. Imagine having everything we love about Android 4.2 (or 5.0 KLP) on a Chromebook. Booting into both, or even blending the two OS flavors together.

According to the leaked video that has since been removed (but still available at the via below) the device is referred to as the Chromebook Pixel — which is “designed by Google down to the last pixel.” Could this be something that ends up for sale in the Play Store? We’ll have to wait and see. We’re not expecting Google to merge the two OS options together, but they might soon be offering a “Nexus” line up of Chromebooks for consumers.

The name comes from the high pixel count in the truly HD 2560 x 1700 resolution retina-like touchscreen, but so far that’s about all the details we have. It has some design cues from the Macbook. With that aluminum design and chick-let style keyboard and all. The Google CR-48 never hit the streets but hopefully this Chromebook Pixel manages to become available sometime soon. Samsung Galaxy S IV 5-inch 1080p display goes into production

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 03:55 PM PST

Earlier this afternoon we reported on some rumors floating around that Samsung will announce and unveil their new Galaxy S IV flagship smartphone on March 15th. Reports suggest an initial Samsung Unpacked event will take place, with retail availability coming sometime in April. Today new reports seem to align perfectly with those rumors.

Samsung-display

According to SammyHub and the trusted and popular Korean site DDaily, Samsung has initiated full launch and production of their new 4.99-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD AMOLED display. The one that will be front and center of their brand new Galaxy S IV smartphone. We’re being told this 1080p 4.99-inch AMOLED display will be impressive and boast more than 440 pixels per inch. So basically look amazing.

The comments from DDaily are reportedly from a trusted source, who detailed that Samsung’s production lines for the new 5-inch screen have been put into full force this month. They’ll be producing millions and millions of Galaxy S IV phones and this will require all of February and March to get anywhere close to having enough for a product launch. For those unaware, Samsung’s Galaxy S III is the highest selling Android smartphone to date with well over 50 million back in January.

If these reports are correct it sounds like production is under way, will be moving swiftly by the time Samsung announces their new Galaxy S IV in March, and should have plenty for a mid to late April launch. If this is accurate Samsung will beat their last year release by a few months, have it arrive before Google’s next Nexus or the X-Phone, and more. It looks like the X-Phone, Galaxy S IV, and HTC M7 all have important months coming up soon. As soon as we get clear details on the Galaxy S IV we’ll report back. For now hit the timeline below for all the news you can handle!

LG Optimus G heads to Australia with LTE early next month

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 03:20 PM PST

The mobile team over at LG has been working hard lately on their smartphone lineup. Their impressive flagship smartphone known as the LG Optimus G was met with great expectations here in the US, and has slowly arrived for more regions since. Today we’ve learned that the folks from LG have one more launch coming up soon. Their flagship phone will hit Australia with 4G LTE come March 13th.

According to reports from AusDroid it appears that LG will be holding an official launch party and media event in Sydney, Australia, where they’ll confirm the handset is arriving for at least one carrier. Reports also confirm 4G LTE will be on board, so that’s certainly good news for those on Telstra.

For now we’re being told the LG Optimus G 4G LTE will be a Telstra exclusive in Australia, but hopefully after an exclusion period other carriers will jump on board and offer this impressive quad-core smartphone. For those unaware, the LG Optimus G is much like the Nexus 4.

The LG Optimus G offers a 4.7-inch 720p HD IPS display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5 GHz quad-core processor accompanied by 2GB of RAM, and we’re still waiting for other details for the Telstra model. There’s two versions stateside. One with an 8 megapixel camera, and another rocking a 13 megapixel shooter. The phone will be powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean so should be an excellent option for the carrier and its customers.

Twitter app updated with improved search and discovery

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 02:03 PM PST

For all those Tweeters out there that opt to use the stock Twitter client on Android, we have good news regarding their latest app update. Today the folks from Twitter’s developer team have released details on their new and improved search and discover tools. They’ve combined tons of tools to make discovery even easier and much more so read on for all the details.

twit

Carbon Twitter app was just updated, but this is all about the official Twitter app so lets take a look. Out of the gate the entire Discovery tab has been redesigned and combined everything into one easy to see and discover place. Now things like suggestions, tweets, activity and even trends all flow into one easy to read and enjoy stream. This should really make things easier and faster for all users on Android and iOS.

Search has also been widely improved. Now when a user searches for something Twitter will not just return results, it will return the most relevant mix of tweets, accounts, photos and more — instead of just a wall of results to dig through. It’s as if someone at Twitter finally learned that making this all streamlined would be better for the users. Something we’ve known for quite some time.

Links, you can’t forget links. Since Twitter is such a social site full of news and links being delivered by the millisecond they’ve finally improved that aspect. Instead of having to tap once to expand a tweet and again to click the link, if you directly tap the link it instantly opens. That one was a no brainer and we’re glad to see it finally arrive for their mobile app. The Play Store listing also mentioned improved support for Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew. As well as miscellaneous bug fixes and performance improvements. Get it now!

Jelly Bean now available for Motorola RAZR HD LTE users in Canada

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 01:51 PM PST

Today seems to be a good day for Jelly Bean updates. Earlier today we learned Motorola was rolling-out Android 4.1.2 for the Electrify M and now it looks like the company has an update ready for those in Canada. Specifically, for those carrying the RAZR HD LTE smartphone, which is available with Rogers and Fido.

Simply put, your Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update has arrived. Motorola posted the details on their official @Motorola_CA Twitter account which states that the update is “now available.” Those with a RAZR HD LTE will likely want to get it now. If so, grab your handset and navigate to Menu -> Settings – About phone -> Software update to get the process started. Otherwise, sit back and wait for the update notification to arrive.

One point to remember, this update is rolling out in batches which means that it may, or may not be available for your device just yet. As we have come to expect from Jelly Bean — this update means improved notifications along with Google Now, Google Voice Search and the smoothness of Project Butter. The first three are the features that you will see and likely want to take advantage of.

The improved notifications mean (amongst other points), that you will be able to take action directly from the notification shade. Google Now is your virtual assistant and aims at being able to remind you of things you need to do, before you need to do them. Lastly, Google Voice Search allows you to search by voice. This includes simple web searches as well as things that are a bit more involved such as finding a local restaurant, getting a train schedule and much more.

Android 4.1.2 now available for the US Cellular Electrify M

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 12:34 PM PST

A bit of good news has arrived for those using a Motorola Electrify M with US Cellular — an update has been announced. The update is coming as Jelly Bean, specifically, Android 4.1.2 and will be coming over-the-air. Users should be on the lookout for an update notification to arrive. But remember, this update is rolling out in batches so there may be a short wait involved.

IMG_3321wtmk-w1024-540x405

Aside from having Android 4.1.2, after the update has been applied your handset should reflect build number 9.8.2Q-50_SLS-7. US Cellular has said that you will need to be connected to Wi-Fi in order to update. Assuming you have your phone in hand and have it connected to Wi-Fi — you can head to Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> System Updates to try and get the process started manually.

The update to Jelly Bean means the smoothness that comes along with Project Butter as well as the addition of three key items. These three goodies include Google Now, Google Voice Search and the improved notifications. Many of you will likely be familiar with what each of these offer, however for those who need a bit of a reminder lets offer a brief recap. Google Now is your assistant. It will get your day started by telling you the weather and make sure you arrive to work on time by letting you know how much traffic you can expect on your commute. Plus, Google Now also offers goodies such as sports scores, reminders of upcoming appointments and more.

Next up is the Google Voice Search and as the name would imply, this means you can speak your questions. These include everything from a basic web search to something a bit more involved such as where a business is located or whether you should bring an umbrella. Finally, the improved notifications. These are a nice plus and mean quick and direct action right from the notification shade. You can return a call, reply to a call with a text message and even expand items to get more details.
