Google rumored to drop NVIDIA in favor of Qualcomm for Nexus 7 refresh

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 11:54 AM PST

nexus7_720w

Google may turn to Qualcomm as the chipmaker of choice for the next-generation Nexus 7, reports  Pacific Crest analyst Michael McConnel. Citing supply chain issues and competitive pricing, Google could be leaving NVIDIA and the Tegra 4 out of the tablet.

Supply chain conversations indicate two reasons for Google's selection of the Snapdragon APQ8064 over Tegra 4: competitive pricing, and a decision to single-source the application processor and 3G/4G modem to simplify logistics and create a fully pin-compatible platform interface." – Analyst Michael McConnell

Additional details for the Nexus 7 are expected to include a true HD display and thinner bezel however everything else is still unclear. Google I/O 2013 takes place in May and many are anticipating a new model or refreshed version of the Nexus 7.  Presumably, this will also be running the newest version of Android – Key Lime Pie. Let’s also hope that the next edition comes with a 4G LTE variant as well.

7-inch Wikipad due in spring

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 07:33 AM PST

To the delight of gamers and Android fans everywhere, the 7-inch Wikipad tablet arrives this spring. Priced at $249, the device will be available in the coming weeks as it hopes to become your tablet of choice.

Consumers will have access to entertainment and videogame content from partners and services including PlayStation®Mobile, Big Fish Games®, TegraZone – NVIDIA’s free app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor – Google Play™, OnLive and many others.

When the gamepad controller is detached, Wikipad's sleek design and full Android 4.1 Jelly Bean functionality make it a powerfully versatile device whether you are surfing the web, reading emails or enjoying films, music and apps at home or on the go.

Powered by Android Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Wikipad is quite powerful with its Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, and microSD expansion.  The 7-inch IPS display features a 16:10 aspect ratio and will surely show off games from the TegraZone, Sony’s Playstation Mobile library, and Google Play.

Wikipad-WP005-Press2-20130206

The obvious comparison that comes to mind is how this is different from the OUYA or Gamestick. Unlike the others, the Wikipad is a tablet at its core. This means you’ll enjoy all the functionality of a traditional Android tablet, including email, books, and web browsing.

Where is the 10-inch model?

The 10-inch Wikipad is still on the horizon however the focus is very much on this current 7-inch design. The developers assure us it’s going to feature the latest and greatest specs however they are not prepared to speak on the time frame.

Why late to the party?

Initially expected to arrive before 2012 was out, the Wikipad has been retooled in order to come in with the $249 price tag. The developers are also quick to admit they found of a flaw in the pilot production run which was “neither a mistake of our excellent design team nor a fault of our incredible manufacturing partners.”

Keep your eyes and ears open for more news on the Wikipad as we get closer to the launch.

5.5-inch LG Optimus G Pro spotted

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 06:43 AM PST

LG has been pretty coy these past few days, teasing their Mobile World Congress announcement(s) but we think we know what one of them may be. A 5.5-inch LG Optimus G Pro has been spotted by our colleagues over at Phone Arena, and the specs are most impressive.

LG-Optimus-G-Pro_specs_leak_wmk LG-Optimus-G-Pro-leaked_full-wmk

Reportedly, the LG Optimus G Pro will feature a 5.5-inch 1080p HD IPS-LCD display, a 1.7GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Where things get really interesting is in the 3140mAh battery and 32GB internal storage with microSD support (up to 64GB). In other words, much like the Optimus G but more where it counts.

How does an Android 4.1-powered LG Optimus G Pro sound to you?  We say Japan’s NTT DoCoMo can keep that 5-inch model, we’ll take this one!

LG stays coy with new teaser for Mobile World Congress

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 06:23 AM PST

Guess who has something new and (superb/beautiful/powerful/innovative) for Mobile World Congress! Guess who likes to play games and tease their fans and followers. If you answered LG to either of these questions, you’re on to the bonus round.

The video you see below is LG’s way of hooking you into keeping an eye on their upcoming product announcements. Mobile World Congress takes place in but a few weeks where we expect to see LG unveil a number of new models for 2013. We’re hoping for a larger roll out of the Optimus G Pro, but we’ll be happy if there’s more for the U.S. Maybe the 5.5-inch LG Optimus G Pro?  We’ve really come to dig the Nexus 4 and Optimus G and think LG is on the right path for the new year.

Chromebook Pixel completely designed by Google with touchscreen, 2560×1700 resolution leaks on video

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 05:15 AM PST

In a new drool-worthy leaked video, we’re seeing some leaked info on the Chromebook Pixel. The notebook is entirely designed by Google, and features a 2560×1700 resolution, as well as a full touchscreen, and – by the renders – looks quite sexy.

While the video is a lot of feel-good imagery and flowing poetry, the idea is pretty cool. With a tagline of “designed by Google, down to the last pixel”, the video was leaked onto Google Plus by developer Francois Beaufort (who is no stranger to leaks). The video has since been removed, but you know what they say… once on the internet, always on the internet.

Check out the video below, and let us know what you think.

Dropbox Sync API released to developers

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 04:50 AM PST

For those of you not familiar with Dropbox… well, you might want to get outside every once in awhile. The service provides cloud hosting for your files, and makes them available on mobile and desktop devices. Now, imagine that you’re trying to download a large file on your mobile device, and you lose signal – that’s bad news. Enter the Sync API.

With the new sync API, developers can let their application work with Dropbox as if it were a local file system, and even work offline. They simply need to add the new API into an app, and the magic happens. According to Sean Lynch, Product Manager for Dropbox, “Our mission is to let users access their data wherever they are. The Sync API lets Android and iOS developers focus on the core of the app and leave all the complexities of syncing and storage to us”.
