Apps of the Week

Ahh yes, the Apps of the Week. We meet here every Saturday afternoon to bring you an app from each of the Android Central writers. But not just any apps, these are the apps that we're using day-to-day and have found useful enough to keep on our devices. We have some tools, games and everything in between on the list today.

Stick around with us after the break and see how we did with our app picks this week.

HTC One is in the house

HTC One

Finally, we've got our hands on the HTC One for official one-on-one time. This is finished hardware, and nearly complete software, so it's time to get our official HTC One review under way.

Before all that, though, it's worth reading over our HTC One preview. While things have been simplified, there's still a lot to go over. And if you've yet to visit our HTC One forums, there's a lot of good stuff going on in there as well.

A now a few quick thoughts, now that we've got the HTC One away from the show floors and into a more intimate setting. (We've turned down the lights and lit a few candles for this guy.)

Netflix shutting down public API program, current third-party apps will continue to function

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 10:34 AM PST

Android Central

While third-party Netflix applications are somewhat limited as to what they can offer anyway, some folks still love to use them. Netflix is putting an end to any future third-party clients however, by killing off the public API program.

Currently active clients will continue to function, as all API keys currently issued will remain active. What it does mean is that no new keys will be issued to third-party developers, so what we've got today is as far as it goes. Additionally the developer portal is being set to read-only, and the OData catalog will be retired in April.

Netflix says that the changes are being made so as to focus on the products and features most used by its subscribers -- or in other words, the official Netflix clients. It's still a little sad to see future third-party apps killed off completely, but given the times we live in -- Twitter being the obvious example -- it isn't all that surprising either.

HTC One. Galaxy S4 leakage Sony Xperia Z. Google Play gift cards in UK

What a week we’ve got ahead of us. In the next seven days we’ll have seen the HTC One launch in Europe, and the unveiling of the Galaxy S4 at Samsung’s big event in New York City. But before we launch ourselves right into yet another smartphone silly season, there’s just enough time to look back over the past week’s international news.

And there’s been a lot to talk about. Retailers and carriers in Europe are preparing for the launch of the HTC One. We got what looks like our first legitimate screenshot leak from the AT&T Galaxy S4. And we gave you our first impressions of the Sony Xperia Z, including a camera comparison with Sony’s earlier flagship. Check out this week's international roundup after the break.

Optimus 4XHD Jelly Bean leaked, bootloader unlock achieved

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:44 PM PST

4XHD Jelly Bean

The Optimus 4X HD was a really well built device with great 2012 specifications released in the middle of last year. But it had some severe software problems, and was locked down so tight nobody could do anything hackish to try and fix them. Glaring software bugs and lack of third-party support is a recipe for a dud in the Android community, and the phone languished away with very few folks paying any attention to it.

Today, all that changes. Jelly Bean has been leaked, the bootloader has been unlocked, and there's already a ClockworkMod recovery built and ready to go. I warn you -- it's not as straight forward as some of the things you'll see, and you'll want to read, read, and read some more before you get started.
