The HTC “phablet” is real, and it’s coming

Posted: 30 May 2013 02:49 PM PDT

Earlier today I mentioned HTC’s recent ego-boost, and their plans to take on Samsung once again with a line up of three new devices in the future. One of those devices mention was referred to as HTC’s uniquely dubbed “phablet.” Well ladies and gents, I am happy to give you a little more detailed information about this interesting device.

HTC T6 InfoHTC is indeed working on a so-called “phablet-class” smartphone with pen-based input, in an attempt to challenge their biggest competitor. The T6, as it is code-named, is a 5.9-inch full HD device, powered by a Qualcomm MSM8974 (aka the Snapdragon 800.) It is rumored to include BoomSound speakers and an optically-stabilized UltraPixel camera in the back. It will also have 2GB RAM (storage may be as low as 16GB,) with a microSD feature to help soften the blow. Need that front-facing camera? Don’t worry, as it is said to offer an impressive 2.1-megapixel, wide-angle configuration. It should be no surprise that Sense will be on HTC's largest handset, but it will be updated with a version of BlinkFeed said to incorporate more partners, more customization options, and the ability to save content for offline consumption.

On top of all that, not only are we hearing that HTC is selecting their pen in a very careful manner (we’re not quite sure if Scribe is powering this device,) but HTC is also looking at including biometrics, in the form of a fingerprint reader, to the table as well. From what we have heard they are being smart about it, and mounting the sensor on the back of the tablet, so that it instantly turns on when it is handled.

Impressed? Wait until you read this. The T6, due to launch in late summer or early fall, will supposedly run Android Key Lime Pie under the hood. Take that with a grain of salt however, as the newest version of Andy isn’t expected to be released until the end of this year. With all of these new pumped-up features from HTC we must ask: Is your interest peaked?

List of HTC devices slated to receive Android 4.3 arrives before version is even announced

Posted: 30 May 2013 12:14 PM PDT

htc_jelly_bean_feature

Well, this is certainly interesting. A list of HTC devices expected to receive Android 4.3 updates has surfaced before Google has even confirmed that such a version of Android exists.

You can see from the accompanied photo that a number of models should see the next release of Android come the 4th quarter of the year, including a handful of older (2012) handsets.

htc-43update-leaked_list

In line to see Android 4.3 are the HTC One, One X, One X+, Droid DNA, and Desire HD. Unfortunately, there are a couple that will get left behind, including the Desire V, Desire X, Droid Incredible 4G, and One S.

Keep in mind that this list is unofficial and Google has yet to formally unveil an Android 4.3 build. With that said, this list seems fairly accurate at first blush; newer, more popular models getting the latest release while others stay back.

Google’s new offering for nutritional information

Posted: 30 May 2013 10:35 AM PDT

Are you a health nut who compulsively checks nutrition facts of everything you ingest? Are you a casual dieter who just wants to make sure you aren’t poisoning yourself? Google’s fulfilling yet another need!

I fall into the latter category and I know that I hate having to download whole apps that do way more than what I need, because I’m usually just looking for fat or caloric value of what I’m buying while I’m at the grocery store. Especially for someone like myself, this update is wonderful. It brings quick and easy access to nutrition information by one tap from your home screen.

Here are a few examples:

  • Tempted by some popcorn at the movies? Ask "how many calories are in popcorn" and you'll get your answer. [Hint: it's 31 calories per cup]
  • Perplexed by a food label or recipe? Ask "what nutrients are in breadfruit?" or "is there sugar in granadilla?"
  • Big on a high protein diet? Ask "how many carbs in corn?" or simply search for [corn] and you'll see detailed nutrition info.

In a nutshell, you can ask Google queries regarding foods, fruits, and veggies for over 1,000 items. The answers, as you might suspect, come in the form of clean cards not unlike Google Now.

The feature will also, of course, be available through the Google website on your favorite browser and in the Google app for iPhone.

If you just tried it and you aren’t yet getting the desired result, don’t worry, they’ll be rolling it out progressively for the next 10 days.

Who’s excited? Anyone else going to be replacing an entire app with this feature?

LG Optimus L4 II and L4 II Dual will be available in Russia this summer

Posted: 30 May 2013 10:14 AM PDT

It looks like LG is expanding their L-series with two new devices according to the Russian website Hi-Tech.Mail.Ru. According to their sources, LG will begin releasing the LG Optimus L4 II and LG Optimus L4 II Dual in Russia sometime this June.

As far as specs go, the Optimus L4 II and Optimus L4 II Dual will both run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The L4 II will feature a 3.8 inch HVGA (480 x 320) True IPS display, will include the HSDPA protocol, a single-core 1GHz MediaTek MT6575 processor, a 3MP rear camera, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory, MicroSD card support, and a 1,700 mAh battery. It will cost around $173 (U.S.).

The Optimus L4 II Dual looks slightly different from the L4 II, but other than design differences and supporting two SIM cards, it's exactly the same device. It's going to be slightly more expensive than the L4 II at $189 (U.S.).

Note: Both the LG Optimus L4 II and L4 II Dual will more than likely only be available in Europe and Asia.

Ice Rage – A bear walks into a hockey rink…

Posted: 30 May 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Ice Rage brings hockey to your Android device in the form of bears, brawls, and general mayhem.  It does not necessarily deliver these all the time, but the makers of WWII: Strategy and Tactics have created a fun, fast-paced, arcade-style hockey game so that you can deliver all the bumps and bruises you wished you could dish out in real life.

unnamed4The title screen gives you everything you need to start Ice Rage.  Nothing fancy, just pick your character, Red for yourself and Blue for your opponent/computer, and select your game type.  There are a few game types that you can choose from that bring Ice Rage from a shallow game into waist-high depths.

Quick match is the normal quick game that throws you into the action.  Tournament mode pits you against the entire Blue team, and Rage-Off makes you defeat three enemies before your health runs out.  Multiplayer gives you local quick-match options and the Rage-Off where you battle and beat each other until someone’s health is depleted.

Starting a game gives you a few, minimal options.  You can select the difficulty:  easy, medium, or hard (which is a real challenge where you manually control the goalie), and you can select the one-button option (this takes away your control of the character’s movement so you only shoot and check).  I would like to see a lot more options like how long you play for, maybe a few costume choices, and the ability to add players into the fray.

The matches are quick and furious…over the top…you can be blown out or make an unprecedented comeback all within 10 seconds.

A game plays out in under a minute or two depending on which game type you are playing.  The games turn into a quick flurry of movement for the puck, and the controls mimic the ice so you have to prepare for sliding and looping turns instead of being able to do a 180 turn.  Shooting is imprecise as well which is part of the difficulty.  You can slow down to help aim your shot better or you can fire off a low-percentage shot that bounces around the boards.

All of this coalesces into a nice cartoony mixture of hockey and air hockey.  The matches are quick and furious, the checks and shots are over the top, and the imprecision creates a match where you can be blown out or make an unprecedented comeback all within 10 seconds.  However, what starts as a simple treat could be grown into a full-fledged hockey simulator.  It would be great to see Ice Rage have a full season mode where you build up your players and team.

That said, Ice Rage brings action-packed hockey to your device so that you can pick it up and play in just a few minutes.  Hopefully, Herocraft can transform Ice Rage into a franchise and make it deeper with more customization.

What we liked

  • Easy to pick up and play.
  • Local multiplayer.
  • Great graphics and fluid motion.

What could be improved

  • More upgrades.
  • A season mode could be awesome.

HTC One with “Nexus user experience” announced for June 26

Posted: 30 May 2013 09:46 AM PDT

Time to put another rumor to bed – HTC has officially announced a “Nexus” version of its flagship smartphone, the HTC One. Available in the Google Play Store starting June 26th, it’s the hardware of the HTC One but with the stripped down, pure Android software experience.

Priced at $599, the HTC One Nexus Experience will be initially offered in the United States with support for AT&T and T-Mobile’s GSM bands. Also of note, the phone is SIM-unlocked and bootloader-unlockable.

Last, and certainly not least important, this version of the HTC One runs Android 4.2.2 out of the box with future updates coming directly from Google.

We swapped out our old laptop hard drive #ificandoit

Posted: 30 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT

In a bit of “inside baseball” news, we recently replaced the hard drive of one of our laptops. Yeah – for some reason we actually do end up filling these things…despite what the sales rep would have us believe.

Somewhere along the line we end up with tons of photos, renders, and other files (first world blogger problems) on top of our music and programs. Instead of adding a secondary or USB hard drive we opted for a new 512GB SSD (840 Pro SATA III) from Samsung. Not only would this be more storage than we already had, but considerably faster and more stable as well.

Samsung is currently offering a running a social media campaign (#ificandoit) where they invite people to document the process of installing one of their solid state drives. We took the challenge and were only too please with the results.

In the event you didn’t see our YouTube video over the weekend, we’ve embedded it below.

A quick glance through some of the other results online tells us that we’re not alone in finding the process simple. Should you be in the market for a lighter, faster, more stable hard drive in that old laptop of yours, we suggest checking out Samsung’s offerings!

HTC looking to take on Samsung with rumored 5.9-inch phone, as well as two other devices

Posted: 30 May 2013 07:12 AM PDT

live_htc_logo_featureIt looks like HTC is trying to make a statement once again, as sources are saying the company is testing a new device. Surprisingly, this possible smartphone is rumored to be 5.9-inches in size, identical to the upcoming Galaxy Note 3.

Laura Chen, an analyst for BNP Paribas Securities Taiwan, is also stating that there may be a total of three devices in HTC’s future. Adding to the list is: a “phablet”; a smaller version of the HTC One powered by a newer processor (likely Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 SoC,) which should be arriving sometime in June; and a new version of the Butterfly (which was HTC's first 1080p device.)

It looks like HTC is starting to believe in themselves as they look to take on Samsung once again. While they are still in recovery mode, it looks like selling 5 million Ones and improving supply demands may have helped boost their ego a bit. Who knows, 2013 might just be the beginning of a renewed HTC and a true competitor to Samsung. Are you starting to have faith in HTC? Let us know in the comments below!

Moto X confirmed as new flagship Motorola device

Posted: 30 May 2013 02:30 AM PDT

At the All Things D conference yesterday, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside finally gave up the ghost on the long-rumored “X” phone. The phone is set to be the new lead device for an equally “new” Motorola. According to Woodside, who said he had the phone in his pocket but couldn’t show anyone, the new Moto X is made in the USA and uses all the new APIs shown off at Google I/O. He also said that, while Motorola was all set to build and release new devices that focus on high quality for a low cost, the X will not be in that category. The X will be ‘more contextually aware” than those devices, and you “can interact with it in different ways”.

While the aforementioned slew of ramblings are exciting, they don’t tell us much of anything. We don’t know which carriers will have the device (although it seemed to pass through the FCC for AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint earlier this month), what hardware will come on the device, or – let’s be perfectly honest – if it’ll live up to the hype being set up for it. There was one particular, however, that was very briefly discussed, concerning battery life. One person asked, “How can you fix it, [battery life] when everyone else has struggled with it so much? There are ways to improve it, but can you solve the underlying problem? How do you go about doing that?” To which Woodside replied:

I’ll save the more detailed discussion for later. But your question about how you understand the change in state and optimized the battery — we have some of the best engineers, and they’ve created a system where there are two processors that are more aware.

Motorola has released a miniature press release of sorts, which can be found below. Be sure to check it out and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Moto X: The First Smartphone Assembled in the USA

There are more than 130 million smartphones in use in the USA today and not one of them was assembled here…until now.

May 28, 2013  Danielle McNally

Today at the AllThingsD conference Dennis Woodside revealed how we are reinventing Motorola through a portfolio of products starting with Moto X, a new flagship smartphone that will be designed, engineered and assembled in the USA. We're not talking about just a handful of units either — available this summer, every Moto X sold in the USA will be assembled in Fort Worth, Texas, making it the first smartphone ever assembled domestically.

There were a few reasons why we decided to do this. There are several business advantages to having our Illinois and California-based designers and engineers much closer to our factory. For instance, we'll be able to iterate on design much faster, create a leaner supply chain, respond much more quickly to purchasing trends and demands, and deliver devices to people here much more quickly. And as a part of Google we're being encouraged to take big bets on things that make a difference.

We still have a network of global operations, and that won't change. Our global manufacturing partner remains Flextronics and we'll continue to assemble devices locally in China and Brazil. But Flextronics is busy looking for people for the new Fort Worth facility now. If you're interested, we encourage you tocheck the available positions and apply.

This is an incredibly exciting time to be in the mobile device industry. Our role in inventing the mobile phone is well known. We're happy to be shaping its future as well.
