Samsung ATIV Q convertable devices redefines usability, dual-boots Windows 8, Android

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 01:10 PM PDT

Among the plethora of new devices unveiled during Samsung’s event in London today, the Samsung ATIV Q is certainly one of the most intriguing. Yes, there are a handful of people on the planet who would love to take pictures with a mirrorless DSLR running Android, but a laptop/tablet hybrid running Windows 8 and Android 4.2 is definitely a product the general public will be interested in.

The Samsung ATIV Q features a 13.3-inch 3200 x 1800 qHD+ (275 ppi) display with a 178 degree viewing angle, Intel’s new Haswell processor, S Pen that tucks away nicely into the magnesium body, measuring a mere 13.9mm thick and weighing in at 1.29 kg  (2.85 lbs). Samsung has yet to disclose the size of the battery used to power the ATIV Q, but they are promising 9 hours of battery life. Taking a few pointers from Sony and Lenovo’s latest Windows 8 laptop/tablet hybrids, the Samsung ATIV Q sports a  four-position hinge, which allows the device to be used in tablet, typing, floating and stand mode.

While the specs of the Samsung ATIV Q may seem impressive, what intrigues us most is how Samsung has managed to seamlessly run Android and Windows 8 at the same time. Samsung’s black magic allows users to switch between the two operating systems at will. Tap an app shortcut and you’re ported from one OS to another. To make things even more simple, users can pin Android app shortcuts to the Windows 8 start screen and launch directly into an Android app from Windows 8. The two operating systems are also capable of sharing the same file structure so that images, videos and other documents can be accessed and edited regardless of the operating system the user is running.

Pricing and launch details have not yet been confirmed, but Samsung is expecting the ATIV Q to hit retail shelves around the back-to-school season.

Over the past few years we have only seen a handful of Android tablets that are actually good. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of a large device with less functionality than the phone that fits into my pocket. A device like the ATIV Q may be the perfect marriage of work and play for those who need Windows 8 for productivity, but also want a better tablet ecosystem than what Microsoft is currently able to provide.

For the right price, do you think the ATIV Q could be this year’s best-selling Android tablet?

With less than a week until retail, Google Edition phones seem stranger than ever

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 01:05 PM PDT

Just six days from now, every Android user’s dream is going to come true. Or at least that’s what a very vocal minority wants you to think. On June 26, the two hottest Android phones available, the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, will be available directly from Google running bone stock Android. You would think this is huge news, and it is, but it doesn’t quite feel like it.

Think about it: die hard Android power-users have been asking for this for years now. Every time a phone comes out, the first thing the most vocal Android users, bloggers and hackers all say is something along the lines of, “If only this phone had stock Android! If only the updates were managed by Google!” I never thought I’d say this, but that’s what’s happening. Google is on the verge of selling totally unlocked, commitment-free Nexus-like devices from every major manufacturer. The Galaxy S4 GE, the HTC One GE, the LG Nexus 4 and hopefully sooner than later, the Sony Xperia Z GE and Motorola Xfon.

Where is the kind of hype that surrounded the Nexus 4? Where are the, “I can’t wait for this to come out” forum threads? Things seem eerily quiet, and I can’t put my finger on why.

Maybe it’s the price. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition will come in at a whopping $650. That’s $300 more than the Nexus 4. Yes, the hardware is superior to the Nexus 4. But is it nearly twice as expensive superior? The HTC One Google Edition will be $600 — still $250 more than the Nexus 4. Both of those prices are compared to the $350 16GB model Nexus 4. There is a cheaper 8GB model as well. The US may be ready for $300-$350 unlocked phones, but $650 is pushing it.

Maybe the majority of Android users like the extra features provided by Sense and TouchWiz. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: not everything included in the latest versions of TouchWiz and Sense are bad. Not even close. There are some very important features and optimizations that make the S4 and One attractive handsets. It’s not just about the display or camera anymore. In fact, we’d argue that software is more important than hardware at this point. TouchWiz and Sense do have a lot to offer.

Maybe people don’t know. Or care. Ask anyone who doesn’t know anything about technology if they know what the Galaxy S4 is. Chances are, they might actually say yes. Ask them about the HTC One, and they’re less likely to say yes. Ask them about the Nexus 4, and if they’re a T-Mobile user, there’s a small chance they’ll know what you’re talking about. Ask them about AOSP, stock Android, Google Edition devices and updates directly from Google, and they’ll think you’re speaking Swahili.

With the amount of effort, or lack thereof, Google has put into marketing the upcoming Google Edition phones, you’d think they don’t care whatsoever. Which makes you think, why? Why go through the effort of getting these phones made? It’s starting to look like Google will be lucky to sell 10,000 units of either device. Are they doing it just to say they did? Maybe so the vocal minority, and bloggers and hackers, will pipe down next time?

If you thought that Google Edition devices were confusing before, seeing how quiet things are surrounding the devices should have you questioning Google’s sanity a bit here. So long as they don’t affect Google’s ability to update their Nexus devices on time and don’t slow the pace of innovation we’re used to, there’s no harm. Still, even if it is business as usual, you have to wonder what Google is thinking. With the minimal amount of hype surrounding the Galaxy S4 GE and HTC One GE, maybe they’re thinking this was a bad idea after all.

Samsung shows off, details Galaxy S 4 Zoom, Mini, Active

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 12:06 PM PDT

Samsung kicked off their Premiere 2013 event by immediately showing off their three new Galaxy S 4 variants: the Galaxy S 4 Active, Galaxy S 4 mini and Galaxy S 4 Zoom. These may be devices we already know about, but Samsung went over all the official specs and features.

The Galaxy S 4 mini will be a smaller Galaxy S 4 with “no compromises.” It’ll feature 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, a 1.7GHz dual core processor, 2GB of RAM and an 8MP camera. Not quite a smaller Galaxy S 4, but it should perform pretty decently. It definitely will have to be at a low price, though, since it’s only qHD.

The Galaxy S 4 Active is a tougher version of the Galaxy S 4 with an IP67 rating. It is fully dust sealed and water resistant, able to survive in a meter of water for 30 minutes. It’ll also have an aqua mode in the camera to enhance the look of underwater photos and allow the use of the volume button to take photos. (The touch screen won’t work under water). To demonstrate it, they threw it into a container of water, and of course, it worked.

The specs of the Galaxy S 4 Active are the same as the Galaxy S 4, including the 1.9GHz quad core Snapdragon 600, 2GB of RAM and 2,600 mAh battery, but it’ll have a TFT 1080p display instead of the Super AMOLED panel. It also has an 8MP camera instead of the 13MP shooter that comes with the Galaxy S 4.

Screenshot (74)

The Galaxy S 4 Zoom is the world’s first smartphone with a 10x optical zoom lens. Using zoom on any smartphone sucks, because digital zoom ruins image quality. Optical zoom will not impair the quality of the photos, just like a real point and shoot. It’ll also have an optical image stabilizer, meaning better video, less shaky shots and better low light performance. The sensor itself is a backside illuminated 16MP sensor paired with a real xenon flash.

On the software side, everything is based on the ring around the lens. Spinning the ring will bring up a menu with many features. You can take a photo in the middle of calls, and it’ll send the photo automatically to the person you’re talking to. With 25 different smart modes, which might be overwhelming, Samsung created a Smart Suggest Mode to automatically suggest the best modes for the situation. Yes, they have so many smart modes, they need a smart mode to choose a smart mode. Either way, it’s a pretty well featured camera-with-a-phone-in-it.

Screenshot (73)

Samsung also announced five new colors for the Galaxy S 4, one of which we already have here in the US. Red Aurora is now an AT&T exclusive, currently available for purchase. The other colors are Blue Arctic, Purple Mirage, Brown Autumn and Pink Twilight. I won’t make a joke about that last color; Samsung already did it for me. But if you were looking for more color in your smartphone, then you’re in luck.

These devices are exactly what we expected from the Premiere 2013 event, but now we get to see all the fine details and specs. These devices, being Samsung, should sell pretty damn well. We’re interested in trying these devices out, so stay tuned for more info from Android and Me! And tell us, what do you think of these Galaxy S 4 variants?

Samsung announces the mirrorless, DSLR-like Galaxy NX

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 11:51 AM PDT

Samsung’s Premiere 2013 event is going on right now, and they started it off big. They showed off the Samsung Galxy S 4 mini, Galaxy S 4 Active and Galaxy S 4 Zoom. Then we got a short look at the Galaxy NX, the next Galaxy Camera, looking exactly as it did in leaked images. It has a DSLR-like body with Android on its large display. And now, they’ve announced the specs.

The Samsung Galaxy NX is the first interchangeable lens Android camera with 4G LTE. This device will have many lenses available at launch and is compatible with all Samsung NX lenses.

Inside, you’ll find a large 20.3MP APS-C sensor. This is the same sensor size used in most DSLRs, so that’s pretty damn impressive. For the photographers here, you’ll find Samsung’s Hybrid autofocus system, a shutter speed as fast as 1/6000s and a dedicated image signaling processor to get the fastest shooting speeds possible.

For the spec guys, you’ll get a 4.8-inch HD TFT display and a 1.6GHz quad core application processor with Android 4.2.2 out of the box. It’ll have more than 30 smart modes for those who like auto modes and will also have a professional mode for those who want to use it in that capacity.

A price has not been announced yet, but the device is pretty impressive! With DSLR-like functionality, it could appeal to a lot of people. And the fact that it runs Android could make the device a lot more useful than other cameras. The original Galaxy Camera was awesome, but a bit of a disappointment when it came to image quality. This device will most likely fix these issues, but at a higher price point. Would you buy one?

Xperia Z Ultra leak shows off Snapdragon 800, massive 6.21 inch display

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 11:00 AM PDT

The Sony Xperia Z is a pretty large device, but it is by no means a phablet. It has the industry standard screen size, which is currently 5 inches. But with the phablet craze taking over every company, it was only a matter of time before every single one started making some sort of massive device. Samsung is already established in this sector with their Galaxy Note and Galaxy Mega. HTC has their rumored T6 on the way. LG has the Optimus G Pro. And now Sony has the Xperia Z Ultra.

This device (codenamed Togari) was rumored to have a 6.4-inch display, and according to these newly leaked screenshots, that is very much true. The screenshots are of Quick System Info PRO showing, you guessed it, system info. The resolution is stated to be 1080 x 1824, with an estimated screen size of 6.21 inches. Factoring in on-screen keys, that’s 1080 x 1920 and 6.4 inches, as previously rumored.

It also mentions an MSM8974, better known as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. It’s a beast of a processor that benches incredibly well. There’s also Android 4.2.2, and in a few of the screenshots, you can see a small tab in the corner that looks awfully similar to Samsung’s multi-window tab. Other specs include 2GB of RAM and 16GB of memory.

This giant device may be announced soon, but knowing Sony, it won’t come to the US in a timely fashion. It took Sony months to bring the Xperia Z to the US, so we won’t hold our breath for the Z Ultra. However, Europe is getting some nice devices from the company. Sony has been doing pretty well in recent times, and we’re excited to get our hands on this massive device. What do you think of it? Would you carry a 6.4-inch device in your pocket?

Facebook officially unveils video sharing for Instagram, ready to take on Vine

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 10:39 AM PDT

Originally rumored on Monday to to be unveiled today, like clockwork, Facebook has just announced video sharing for its massively popular photo sharing network, Instagram, to take on Vine.

Video sharing through Instagram is similar to other social networks and apps in that videos are limited in time, 15 seconds in this case, and are able to be assembled in clips or chunks. Instagram will set itself apart from its fiercest competition, Vine, with the ability to delete clips and with filters. There are 13 brand new filters developed just for Instagram’s new video sharing. All of Instagram’s new video sharing features are built right into the existing Instagram app, and excluding custom image stabilization, are going to be available on Android from day one.

Over the last few days, concern for how Instagram with video will fare against Vine’s already established user base has been voiced by many, but we don’t think there’s anything to worry about. On Android, Vine has yet to live up to the hype. Missing features and simple functionality problems have prevented the app from performing well on Android. Vine is currently sitting in Google Play with three stars at over 30,000 reviews; Instagram will have a big opportunity here if they don’t screw it up.

What do you think? Will you be sharing videos through Instagram now, or are you still holding out for Vine to get better? The new Instagram with video should be available for download any moment now.

Introducing Video on Instagram from Instagram on Vimeo.

Watch the Samsung Premiere 2013 event livestream here at 2 PM EST!

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 10:22 AM PDT

Samsung’s Premiere 2013 event is going on today, and it starts in less than an hour! Be here at 2 PM Eastern (or 11 AM Pacific, if you roll that way) and watch the live stream straight from Samsung! There will be some cool announcements, and if you miss it, we’ll be telling you all about them.

Rumored to debut at the Premiere 2013 event is the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini. The device should come with a dual core processor, a 4.3-inch qHD display and aesthetics in line with the full-size Galaxy S 4. We wish it would have a 720p display resolution like HTC put into the One Mini, but the S 4 Mini still seems like a competent device.

We may also see Samsung’s newest device in the Galaxy Camera lineup, the Galaxy Camera NX. It’ll have a mirrorless design, and according to leaks, will be the size of a DSLR and feature interchangeable lenses. With an APS-C sensor, it should take some pretty awesome photos, but we’ll have to see for ourselves.

We’ll also see devices that have already been announced, like the Galaxy S 4 Zoom. And if you’re interested in Windows devices, Samsung has some plans for their Windows-powered ATIV series. Watch the livestream at 2 PM Eastern and tell us what you think of the event!

NVIDIA drops price of Shield to $299; release date June 27

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 06:57 AM PDT

The NVIDIA Shield is a unique device; it’s NVIDIA’s first attempt at an honest to goodness Android gaming tablet. Complete with a foldable design, 5-inch 720p display, complete console controls and the ability to play both Android and PC games, the Shield certainly packs a lot of features. But the $349 price tag has always seemed a bit steep to consumers, and they didn’t stay silent about it. The public made sure NVIDIA knew they would be more likely to buy a Shield if it was priced lower. NVIDIA listened and lowered the price to $299 just one week before the device’s release date.

But was NVIDIA’s only motivation consumer backlash? That’s definitely part of it, but NVIDIA wouldn’t have lowered the price of the Shield if it was selling well. The company admits pre-sales, which started May 17, have been “very limited,” but attribute this to its decision to hold off on heavily marketing the Shield until NVIDIA knew it could produce and deliver the device. NVIDIA has stated that it will not release the product internationally until it has nailed down a price point and sales model in the U.S.

While a reduction in price is often enough to convince consumers to pull out their wallets, our gut tells us this product will flop. NVIDIA is targeting a niche market where competition is already fierce.

What are your thoughts on NVIDIA lowering the price of the Shield? Is the price decrease enough to spur you to purchase one?

LG’s next G series smartphone will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 06:35 AM PDT

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor is the primary choice for a competition-destroying processor,  so we were bound to see it get stuffed into our phones soon. LG has come out to say that the next smartphone in their high-end G series line will indeed feature a Snapdragon 800 processor. They didn’t reveal anything more than that regarding this new phone, but let’s quickly run over what we already know regarding the Snapdragon 800.

The Snapdragon 800 features four Krait 400 CPUs that can run up to 2.3GHz in each core, which greatly outpaces anything else on the market. The Snapdragon 800 can also display, record and playback videos in Ultra HD resolutions; normal screen resolution of a device can be up to 2560 x 2048 pixels. Some of the other benefits are improved performance and battery life, full support for LTE advanced networks and stunning graphics capabilities with the new Adreno 330 GPU.

What we’re expecting to see with this phone is something that simply blows the competition out of the water. If LG can push this smartphone into the US carriers in a timely fashion, they could have a real shot at getting a best-seller. The Galaxy S4 and HTC One wouldn’t be able to compete with a device with specs like this.

On a scale of 1-10, how much do you guys want to see this device get fully revealed?
