Posted: 18 Jun 2013 02:01 PM PDT

We’re huge fans of changing the home screen around a bit and creating a new user experience for our Android. So much so that we present this weekly series of Get This Look posts.

In a nutshell we show you a new look for your Android handset and tell you which apps you’ll need if you want to mimic the feel. Some of these are a little easier to create than others and many of them can be tweaked to no end. The following details are but the ingredients to which you can create your own delicious Android dish; your results will vary. Which is awesome!

If nothing else, this is a great way to discover new apps, widgets, icons, and more!

WHY WE LOVE THIS LOOK:

As if we really need to explain why we chose this look. It’s a whole bunch of great apps and widgets that bring together a nice cohesive experience. It’s magical, revolutionary, and simply the best you could ever hope for. Radical. Breathtaking. Innovative.

All joking aside, we really like this look as it brings together some clean and simple designs with the right dash of color. Yes, it looks like iOS7. But we cannot help it if iOS7 looks like Android. Nevertheless, we appreciate the overall look. What we like most is that it starts at the lockscreen and continues into a full-fledged JB/OS7 hybrid.

Indeed, the layout takes a bit of configuring and it might seem a bit daunting. That’s okay, however, as the creator has put together a nice tutorial video on how to pull it all together.

Kindle FreeTime Unlimited adds tons of popular new content to their program

Posted: 18 Jun 2013 09:44 AM PDT

kindle freetimeAbout six months ago, Amazon released Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, an easy to use service that brings together all types of content kids and parents love (books, games, educational apps, and more) into one service. Today, Amazon let us know that since launch it has added more than a thousand books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows to Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, including popular titles from Disney, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and Electronic Arts (EA). If you have been thinking of introducing your little one to the world of technology, this may be the place to start.

New kid-favorites currently being added to FreeTime Unlimited include Disney's hit Where's My Mickey?, Warner Brother's LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4, Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat Comes Back from Oceanhouse Media, Plants vs. Zombies by EA, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Curious George at the Zoo. According to Amazon, kids love FreeTime because they can easily explore content on their own, check out their favorite topics like “robots” or “princesses,” and can feel like an individual with their own customized profile. Parents love the program because all apps are secure and have removed in-app payments, advertisements and social media, all apps are screened for age-appropriateness, and once you make a purchase, it is yours forever.

time limitsKindle FreeTime is a free service on the current generation Kindle Fire family. A really nice feature of the program is the way in which they have helped reinvent traditional parental controls. This newer program makes it possible for parents to personalize their children's experience with easy-to-use tools such as Time Limits, a tool that allows parents to manage their children’s screen time. No more telling your child over and over that it is time to put down the game. With Time Limits, parents can set daily cut-offs, or restrict certain categories – like games and video – while leaving unlimited time for reading.

Kindle FreeTime Unlimited is an optional extension to Kindle FreeTime, and is available for Prime members for monthly fee of $2.99 per child or $6.99 per family. Customers who are not Prime members can subscribe to FreeTime Unlimited for $4.99 per child or $9.99 per family. For more information on Amazon FreeTime and FreeTime Unlimited, make sure to visit Amazon’s website.

Oppo Find 7 to be launched in September?

Posted: 18 Jun 2013 08:58 AM PDT

Oppo has created a set of beautiful Android handsets in the past, for instance the Oppo Finder and the Oppo Find 5. Arguably, the Oppo Find 5 has hardware specs we might expect to see on flagship devices from Samsung or HTC, but at lower costs. Oppo may continue that trend with the successor to the Find 5,the Oppo Find 7, later this fall.

No, no, it’s not a 7-inch Android phone, despite what the name might have you believe. Instead we will see a 5-inch 1080p Full HD on it with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. It also features  a 13 MP rear camera with an 8 MP front camera, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, NFC support, and with a huge 4,000 mAh battery. Coule the Oppo Find 7 stand out in the smartphone crowd? On paper, yes.

Word on the street that it will be launched in September; we are also hoping that it will hit US shores as well.

Are there any Oppo fans out there? Share your thoughts about the Oppo Find 7 in the comment box below.

Posted: 18 Jun 2013 07:13 AM PDT

tmobile_xperia_z_720

T-Mobile confirmed today that the Sony Xperia Z will soon be available as part of its Android smartphone lineup. A press release indicates that the UNcarrier will offer the sexy handset as part of an exclusive deal in the “coming weeks”. Pricing was not disclosed however we’re optimistic that T-Mobile will do the right thing and put it at or below the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 stickers. Color options will be black and purple, however the latter is a limited time deal.

As a refresher, the Sony Xperia Z runs Android Jelly Bean and features a 5-inch 1080p HD Reality Display, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. First announced back at CES 2013, the handset is also waterproof and dust proof.

Xperia® Z from Sony to Make a Splash at T-Mobile this Summer

T-Mobile is the only U.S. mobile provider of Sony’s flagship water-resistant smartphone

BELLEVUE, WA – June 18, 2013 – Continuing to offer customers a wide selection of hot 4G LTE smartphones, T-Mobile US, Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) today announced it will be the exclusive U.S. wireless company to carry the Xperia® Z from Sony.

The Xperia Z packs the best Sony has to offer into a premium Android-powered smartphone. T-Mobile will offer the device on its Simple Choice Plan with no annual service contract plus unlimited talk, text and Web on a screaming fast, nationwide 4G network with 4G LTE rolling out across the country.

“T-Mobile customers traveling this summer will love the Xperia Z with its big, beautiful HD screen, water-resistant design and advanced camera features,” said Jason Young, vice president of product marketing, T-Mobile. “This is an outstanding combination: a premium 4G LTE smartphone with Sony’s best features coupled with T-Mobile’s unlimited data and speedy nationwide network.”

Simple Choice Plan

With T-Mobile’s Simple Choice Plan, Xperia Z customers design their plan based on the number of lines and amount of high-speed data they want. Unlimited talk, text and Web with up to 500MB of high-speed data is $50 per month (plus taxes and fees) for the first line. Customers can add another 2GB of high-speed data at up to 4G speeds for $10 per month per line or get unlimited 4G data and up to 500MB of tethering for an additional $20 per month per line. A second phone line can be added for $30 per month and each additional line is just $10 per month. There are no caps, no overages and no restrictive annual service contracts.

T-Mobile’s 4G LTE Network

The Xperia Z will seamlessly connect to T-Mobile’s high-speed nationwide 4G HSPA+ network and advanced 4G LTE network wherever it is available, which is expected to reach 100 million people by midyear and 200 million nationwide by the end of the year1. T-Mobile’s 4G LTE rollout complements its existing nationwide 4G network covering 228 million people, which third-party tests show already rivals or beats existing competitive LTE networks in many markets. T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network is currently available in seven metropolitan areas: Baltimore; Houston; Kansas City; Las Vegas; Phoenix; San Jose, Calif.; and Washington, D.C.

“With Xperia Z, we are thrilled to bring a breakthrough smartphone to T-Mobile, the breakout carrier in the U.S.,” said Timothy Hernquist, North America Vice President of Marketing, Sony Mobile Communications. “Xperia Z offers customers a beautifully designed, water-resistant premium Android smartphone ready to handle whatever life throws at it.”

Amazon announces Amazon Birthday Gift for your Facebook friends

Posted: 18 Jun 2013 06:42 AM PDT

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it has a new way of offering gifts to your Facebook friends. Dubbed Amazon Birthday Gift, it connects to your Facebook account and lets users send a virtual gift card to your friends. Not only that, but other mutual friends can chip in with their own denominations, adding up to one potentially giant birthday gift card! In other words, everyone tosses in money and you get one card full of win.

We’re just spitballing here but we can think of tons of things we might consider purchasing with gift cards. Heck, just this morning we noticed the Droid DNA is only a penny with a two-year service agreement.  We’d use the rest for accessories and games!

For a limited time, visitors may be eligible for a $3 Amazon.com credit so be sure to log in and have a look around!

Yeah, we know this isn’t entirely Android-related news, but we felt like sharing nonetheless!

HTC intros entry-level Desire 200

Posted: 18 Jun 2013 06:17 AM PDT

htc_desire_200_720

HTC confirmed on Tuesday that the entry-level Desire 200 will soon arrive at various carriers around the globe. Specifications are a few steps behind the typical Android so we’re inclined to believe that developing countries and areas are the key demographic here.

Powered by “Android with HTC Sense” we might assume an older version is in order, maybe even 2.3 Gingerbread? Nevertheless, hardware includes a 3.5-inch display, single-core 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, and 5-megapixel rear camera.

Pricing is not yet known however we’d expect something very inexpensive for the HTC Desire 200. While you might scoff at the hardware, imagine this being your first taste of internet or mobile phone in a market that previously didn’t have access to either. It’s more than enough for first-time users in developing lands.
