Since smartphones became popular, they have been getting bigger and bigger. The Galaxy S 4 Mini and now the HTC One Mini suggest otherwise. There’s still a lot left to discover about the One Mini, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated. source: htcmms.com.tw

DooMLoRD from XDA Developers has released version 11 of his Easy Rooting Toolkit, which allows users to easily and quickly root their handsets. However, only three devices are supported so far, including the Xperia S, Xperia Z, and the Xperia SP. The program works with both locked and unlocked handsets. | Shazam – former HTC execs startup Kazam to produce smartphones Posted: 18 Jun 2013 01:34 PM PDT
Last month HTC was purged of many top executives, including Michael Coombes, the former head of U.K. sales for HTC and James Atkins, a U.K. marketing head for HTC. Those two have resurfaced only weeks later with the announcement that they are launching Kazam, a new smartphone manufacturer. Coombes will be CEO for the new company and Atkins will serve as chief marketing officer. According to the two, Kazam will be about “stunning design, robust hardware, and intuitive technology, underpinned with improved customer service.” The move is certainly a bold one at a time when we see companies like HTC, Sony and LG struggling against the twin behemoths Apple and Samsung. Considering the trouble established companies are having, it is hard to imagine a startup becoming successful. Kazam will have the challenge of both sourcing parts for the devices it plans to produce and striking deals to get connected with carriers willing to offer their devices. One glimmer of hope is the fact that the company plans to focus on the European market where unlocked devices are more popular. Kazam also promises to differentiate itself by offering support after a sale is made, although it is unclear what that means. Perhaps there will be more of a focus on keeping devices up to the most recent version of Android, assuming that is the operating system chosen for their smartphones. source: CNET

| AT&T announces Street Charge mobile charging stations around New York City Posted: 18 Jun 2013 11:27 AM PDT
AT&T launched their Street Charge program today, opening solar-powered mobile charging stations around New York City’s five boroughs. This initiative, for which AT&T partnered with solar industry leader Goal Zero, was inspired after Hurricane Sandy left so many people without power. The charging stations, which are currently available in only four locations, are in plans to arrive in 21 additional places around the city. It will be interesting to see how successful this program will be in such a highly populated place like New York. You can see AT&T’s official press release after the break.
What is AT&T Street Charge?As part of an ongoing effort to keep New Yorkers connected, AT&T is pleased to unveil AT&T Street Charge. This pilot initiative provides free solar mobile charging stations in locations across all five boroughs where the public can charge their phones, tablets and other devices. AT&T Street Charge is a direct outgrowth of Superstorm Sandy when AT&T powered New York City’s distribution centers with commercial generators and pop-up cellular service. New Yorkers who had lost power for days or longer flocked to the centers seeking a charge and a way to communicate to the outside world. Recognizing the need for a sustainable charging solution, AT&T teamed up with solar industry leader Goal Zero and Brooklyn-based design firm Pensa to develop the initiative and bring it to local residents. Between now and the end of summer, AT&T will deploy approximately 25 AT&T Street Charge solar mobile charging units across the five boroughs. Along with the two solar mobile charging units now live at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1, charging units are also available today at Governor’s Island, Union Square and Pier 1 at Riverside Park. Two years ago we debuted free Wi-Fi in 26 locations across New York City Parks and last year became one of the first major carriers to offer underground cellular service on 36 subway platforms. Solar mobile charging is a natural next step in AT&T’s efforts to provide innovative services for New Yorkers that empower them to lead more sustainable lives. Dashclock is one of the most popular customization apps on the Play Store. It offers tons of options for customizing your lock screen on Android 4.2 and has many more plug-ins for other apps. Today, Dashclock is getting an update that includes Daydream support and more detailed weather information, as well as a handful of new APIs for developers making Dashclock extensions. HTC had apparently begun pushing out an Android 4.2.2 update to the HTC One, but according to UK carrier Three, the update was pulled with no specific reasoning. They didn’t, however, say when or if HTC was going to begin rolling the update out again. HTC attempted to clarify some things, saying the One is still slated to receive Android 4.2.2, but customers are going to have to wait just a little bit longer before its available. Better late than never, I guess. Hopefully we’ll see that update sooner rather than later. source: Engadget

Have you been eyeing the Galaxy Note 8.0 and the Galaxy S 4 but can’t decide which one you want to pick up? AT&T might just have a solution for you. AT&T will begin carrying the 4G-enabled version of the Note 8.0 on June 21st for $399, but if you purchase a Galaxy S 4 with it, you can snag the tablet for just $199. (That deal also applies to the Galaxy S 4 Active and the Galaxy Note 2) You’ll have to sign two year contracts for the devices, obviously, but it’s still a pretty nice deal if you were wanting to pick up both devices. If you would rather just buy the tablet, you can get one for $399. You’ll be able to get in on the deal starting June 21st both online and in-store. Not much is known about the event, but its safe to assume Samsung will be showing off the new variants of their flagship S 4 (the Mini, Mega, Activ and Zoom) as well as a possible look at one of the two rumored camera’s Samsung will be introducing to their Galaxy line. For those interested, tune in to the event on their YouTube page and let us know below what you want to see from Samsung on the 20th. I for one am hoping for an announcement regarding the Galaxy NX Camera and am excited to see what else Samsung has up their sleeve.

The next great HTC budget device has officially been unveiled to the masses with the introduction of the Desire 200 smartphone. Like many of HTC’s previous budget offerings, the smartphone comes in a compact, yet sleek package as the device will feature a 3.5-inch display encased in a nice black or metallic grey shell. Specs-wise, the smartphone has your typical run-of-the-mill items like a single-core Snapdragon chip, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of on-board storage (plus an expandable microSD slot), a 5MP camera and a 1,230mAh battery. Oh and for prospective customers out there looking for an extra kick when listening to music, the Desire 200 will feature Beats Audio as well. While the newest addition to the HTC family is officially launched now, there’s still no word on when or where the device will hit retail outlets— nor do we know how much it will cost for now. The good thing is that the wait for the specific details shouldn’t be too much longer from now. source: GSM Arena

| Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg travels to S. Korea to pitch next Facebook phone to executives Posted: 18 Jun 2013 06:56 AM PDT
Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg recently visited South Korea to meet with top executives from Samsung’s mobile division, reportedly asking Samsung to launch a phone with a Facebook interface. This would be the next step in Facebook’s quest to be the next Google, following HTC’s disappointing HTC First, a mid-range Android-powered Facebook phone that has apparently only sold around 10,000 units. Between those sales numbers and Samsung’s extremely close ties with Google, a Samsung/Facebook collaboration is highly unlikely. The HTC First was the most recent attempt from HTC to provide a Facebook-oriented smartphone, previously launching the poorly received HTC Salsa and HTC Status in 2011. The First introduced the Facebook Home launcher, a disappointing attempt at a launcher replacement with a built-in news feed and not much else. AT&T dropped the unit due to its lackluster sales and lukewarm reception. Samsung has yet to comment on the proposal, though its safe to assume they will not be manufacturing the next Facebook phone.
