Asus gives their tablets a fresh look; budget friendly MeMo starts at just $129

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 12:34 PM PDT

In need of a tablet but don’t want to spend half of a paycheck plus your favorite puppy to buy one? Look no further as Asus might have just what you’re looking for.

Asus MeMo Pad
Asus MeMo Pad HD 7
Asus MeMo Pad FHD 10

While certainly not the most agressive, the Asus MeMo Pad HD 7 should end up being the most popular of Asus’ models thanks to its attractive starting price of just $129 for the 8GB model. (The 16GB version will go for $149.) As far as specs go, the HD 7 sports a 1280×800 7-inch IPS display and weights just 302g. It will be available in pink, green, blue and white, and is powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex A7 processor. You can start looking for it this July.

Need something a little bigger? The MeMo Pad FHD 10 is the 10-inch version with a 1920×1200 IPS screen. It runs on the Intel Atom Z2560 processor and features wireless options such as Wi-Fi, GPS and GLONASS for navigation, as well as Miracast for wireless display. The FHD will come in 16GB and 32GB versions, and supports memory expansion via a microSD card slot.

Asus Transformer Pad Infinity

Maybe you are willing to spend a little more on a nicer tablet.  At the high-end of the Asus spectrum is the Transformer Pad Infinity. It sports a 10-inch 2560×1600 display and is powered by Nvidia’s latest 1.9GHz Tegra 4 processor with a 72-core GeForce GPU. Its additional keyboard dock includes a touchpad, USB 3.0 port, and an SDXC card reader.

Asus FonePad Note FHD6Now I know how you all feel about the ‘phablet and fonepad’ hype, but this one may be worth mentioning (after all, if we gave HTC some press, the least we can do is be fair.) The Asus Fonepad Note FHD 6 is a 7-inch Fonepad that has just become available in Asia. The Fonepad Note is meant to be used as a mobile phone, however that is all up to the user and how much they like holding tablets up to their faces. Though smaller at 1920×1080 pixels, its display has a higher resolution than the original Fonepad. The Note FHD 6 has a stylus slot and comes with Asus’ software, a feature that will likely be similar in function to their competitions. Price and availability in the states is yet to be known.

Overall, it looks like they have something for everyone at this point. Let us know, which would you choose, if one at all?

Vine arrives for Android 4.0+ devices

vine-for-android

After what seems like a painstakingly long time, Vine has been officially released on the Android platform. Available immediately, the free app lets users shoot, watch, or share the short video clips that seem to be popping up everywhere.

Those of you who have spent time with the iOS version will find that the Android app is a little bit different. Not to worry, though, this is a preliminary release with plenty of updates expected in short order. In fact, the developers promise there will eventually be features for Android that are exclusive to the platform.

Over the coming weeks, you'll see frequent updates with new features –– including front-facing camera, search, mentions and hashtags, and the ability to share to Facebook… we have exciting plans for features that could exist only on Android.  We even added a few features that are unique to Android: zoom (on devices that support it), and much improved offline browsing.

Google Play downloads look to overtake Apple by this fall

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 07:53 AM PDT

google play 4.0We talk a lot of smack about Apple around here, and this time I’m going to try and be a little kinder. Let me begin by saying congrats to Apple as they recently celebrated their 50-billionth app download. Ok, the ability to be nice stops there as it has been announced that Android users are currently downloading 500-million more apps per month than Apple, and at that rate Andy will speed on by and be the most popular on the market by this fall.

Thanks to new devices from Samsung, Google Play has forged ahead despite limited top-end applications and consumers who are conscious buyers. There are now 900-million Android devices in the market compared to 600-million Apple products today. To help push Andy ahead, Android has recently won over a large number of app developers and even though things started slow and less apps launch first on Android, a growing number of the most popular are now available on both platforms and the gap between launches seems to be narrowing.

Here are some interesting stats: Apple says that more than 850,000 titles are available on its App Store, while Google recently mentioned that 48-billion apps in total have been downloaded from Play. Approximately 2-billion iOS apps are downloaded each month, but about 2.5-billion are downloaded on Android devices from Google Play.

At this rate, it is expected that Google will be in the lead by October. Go Andy!

21.5-inch Acer DA220HQL “all-in-one” announced with TI processor

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 07:33 AM PDT

Acer announced on Monday that it has begun offering the DA220HQL, a not-quite all-in-one PC experience powered by Android. Details include a 21.5-inch (1920×1080) display, USB 3.0, VGA, HDMI and DVI ports, microSD expansion, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Of particular note is the Texas Instruments 4430 ARM chip, which is different from what we were expecting late last week.  Apparently some online retailers had incorrectly listed the device with an Intel Haswell processor. Chances are good, however, that this won’t matter much to the average user or target demographic. Really, if you look at where this is listed within Acer’s website, it comes across more of a monitor that also runs Android.

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Acer DA220HQL is available now with a $399.99 starting price.

Internal Samsung code confirms Samsung Galaxy Note 3, other models

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 07:08 AM PDT

Some internal codes from Samsung Kazakhstan have seemingly confirmed the existence of multiple rumored devices. Spied over the weekend, the code tells us model numbers and names for a handful of products we already expected down the road. Among those is the SM-N9000 Samsung Galaxy Note III.

leaked_samsung_models-580x290

The takeaway here is that Samsung looks to be in the later stages of development or testing and that we should soon anticipate announcements in the near term.

  • Galaxy Note 3
  • Galaxy Tab 3 7.0
  • Galaxy Tab 3 8.0
  • Galaxy Tab 3 10.1
  • Galaxy S4 Zoom

Assuming Samsung doesn’t schedule any more separate events, the two most likely scenarios are the Premiere Event on June 20 and IFA.  The annual IFA conference is where we saw the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Note and its predecessor one year later.
