Don't forget to watch Google's Breakfast with Sundar event!
Jul 24th 2013, 14:47, by Nick Sarafolean

We’re about an hour away from Google’s Breakfast with Sundar Pichai event where the new Nexus 7 is rumored to be announced. Sadly for Google, it’s already been leaked out the wazoo and is actually up for pre-order at Best Buy right now. Nonetheless, El Goog is livestreaming the event for everybody to watch. We should also see Android 4.3 announced at this event. If you’re looking to watch the event, we’ve embedded it below.

New Nexus 7 pops up for pre-order on Best Buy's website
Jul 24th 2013, 13:41, by Nick Sarafolean

With just a couple short hours left until Google is expected to announce the new Nexus 7, Best Buy has decided to just put it up for pre-order already. What the listing does is confirm a lot of what we knew about the device. Pricing is set to be very low at just $229 for the 16GB model and $269 for the 32GB model. So far, the Wi-Fi models have been the only ones to crop up; maybe the LTE versions will be released a bit later. Here’s a full rundown of the specs from Best Buy:

  • 7-inch 1920 x 1200 display
  • 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB or 32GB storage
  • 5MP rear camera, 1.2MP front-facing camera
  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 11.2 ounces, 0.3-inches thick

There are also a few pictures of the device, but we’ve already seen most of them thanks to previous leaks. So far, the new Nexus 7 is shaping up to be a powerful successor to last year’s model. That high-res screen is certainly going to be a very nice addition to the tablet.

Are you planning to order a Nexus 7?

Ubuntu Edge crowd funding campaign introduces new lower cost perk tiers
Jul 24th 2013, 13:23, by Nick Gray

If you missed out on the first day $600 Ubuntu Edge perk tier, fear not. Canonical has updated the Indiegogo campaign with nine new perk tiers which span the gap between the original $600 and $830 pledge amounts. Backers are rewarded with the limited edition Edge smartphone that dual-boots Ubuntu and Android. Each of the new tiers will be unveiled once the previous tier is sold out.

The Ubuntu Edge may not be for everyone, but the campaign has shown that there are quite a few smartphone junkies out there who are willing to invest their hard earned cash to help fund an idea which could lead to the next smartphone revolution. With $4.2 million already secured in less than two days, the Ubuntu Edge crowd funding campaign shouldn’t have any issue reaching its $32 million target.

More opportunities to get your Ubuntu Edge

Hi everyone

The last few days have been absolutely incredible — over $3.5 million in the first 40 hours. We've broken records, we've attracted the attention of the world, and we're marching closer and closer to bringing the Ubuntu Edge to life. $32 million is a huge number, and we've never danced around this fact. To get there, we're going to need your help to bring family, friends, fans, and followers to the campaign.

This crowdfunding process has already provided us with a lot of great feedback, especially about our perks — and we've been listening to it all. You told us you want more opportunities to get the Ubuntu Edge at a lower contribution level, so we went back to our spreadsheets and came up with a solution. Today we're changing our perk levels. We'll offer a limited number of phones at each level, and as each tier runs out the next ones will be made available, so act quickly to get the best deal!

You'll only see the first few levels on the campaign page today, but continuing our habit of openness and transparency we want to share the whole plan with you.

Hundreds of you have already contributed $830 for an Ubuntu Edge, but don't worry. We'll refund the difference at the end of the campaign so you won't lose out. We'll contact you all directly with more information.

We need to keep the campaign momentum going. Please help by sharing the news and, of course, keep pledging!

The Ubuntu Edge team
