Nexus 7 2 release set for July 31, says retail leak
Jul 19th 2013, 18:51, by Robert Nelson

It seems the Nexus 7 2 leaks are beginning to pick up in pace. Earlier this morning we saw a bit of talk about the specs and now it is looking like the release date has been revealed. We should point out that this has yet to be confirmed by Google or the retailer, in this case Staples, however it does show some dates that are starting to line up. This recent Staples leak points towards two dates.

The first of those dates is July 24th, which just so happens to be the same date Google is having their next event. The details coming from the Staples leak isn’t suggesting that is when the tablet will be available though. Instead the leak mentions how the “NEW Nexus 7″ inventory may be arriving as early as July 24th. The release date is actually set for a week later — on July 31st.

Further details from this leak go on to talk about how the tablet will be displayed and about how any inventory that arrives before July 31st will need to be “kept in lockup.” There was however mention of a demo unit arriving on July 26th. While this wouldn’t give us any chance to play, that demo unit would at least be a way to confirm whether these recent Nexus 7 2 image leaks were the real deal.

Otherwise, there was mention of how the new Nexus tablet will have “superior specs all the way around with some other new exciting features we can’t talk about yet.” Sounds intriguing, but it also seems like we have already seen quite a bit of those specs already leak.

The details from earlier today mentioned specs to include Android 4.3 along with a 7-inch display, quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 32GB of internal storage, 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, wireless charging and a Slim Port that will allow for 1080p HD video out. If nothing else, we suspect this news will be enough to convince some to start pestering their local Staples on the 24th in hopes of getting a device a bit ahead of schedule.

Chromoting app incoming as remote desktop solution for Android
Jul 19th 2013, 18:03, by Robert Nelson

It looks like the Chromium team has begun work on a remote desktop app. The app is called Chromoting and early details have recently been discovered by François Beaufort with more available on the Chromium code review site. While the details are still on the light side, it is looking like the Chromoting app will bring a remote desktop control solution to Android.

chromoting

Granted, this is something that is already available by way of third party solutions, however this one would presumably be available for free. Google already offers an app called Chrome Remote Desktop which allows the user to remotely access another computer through the Chrome browser or using a Chromebook.

The code reviews page for the Chromoting app mentioned how this is the beginnings of the app and goes on to list what the app can and cannot do at the moment. And before anyone thinks of giving this a try — the missing features include being able to “display the host’s desktop” and “handle any kind of input.” Pretty much everything you would want to do with a remote desktop app.

Basically, it seems this is still so early that it could not even truly be considered an alpha just yet. Needless to say, it would be nice to see a mobile version of the Chrome Remote Desktop app eventually makes entry into the Play Store. And as one would expect given this early stage — we have yet to see any sort of timeline for a release.

Sony tipped to release "clip-on" 20MP camera lens for Android
Jul 19th 2013, 17:21, by Cory Gunther

Smartphones with impressive cameras are the hot thing lately. Samsung’s released a Galaxy Camera, and even a Galaxy S4 Zoom smartphone with a 16 megapixel huge lens mounted on back. And don’t get us started with Nokia’s Lumia and that 41 megapixel shooter. Today we’re hearing another will be entering this space, but with a completely different approach. That being clip-on accessory lens options for the photographer in you.

sonylens

According to Sony Alpha Rumors the company is hard at work building “lens camera” accessories for Android smartphones. Most notably, their wide range of high-powered Xperia smartphones, but any Android will do. Hopefully.

As the report goes, two sources have both “confirmed” this is indeed the real deal from Sony and coming extremely soon. On a scale of 1-5, the chances of this hitting the market is a 6 according to the leaksters. So take that as you will. So what exactly is Sony planning? A clip-on or optional 20.2 megapixel high-end camera lens that will attach to our smartphones, sync to the display, and make our devices take truly great photos.

It won’t be a low-end accessory either. It will be the same 1-inch 20.2-megapixel Exmor R sensor and f/1.8 Carl Zeiss quality lens as the recently announced Sony RX100 II pictured above. Which means this will be quite the mobile accessory, and probably not cheap.

The lens sports a built-in battery, WiFi, and NFC and your smartphone display will double as the camera viewfinder. We have a feeling WiFi or Bluetooth will be used for communication, and this is essentially their answer to these recently released camera-smartphones. Hopefully it isn’t a Sony exclusive, but we won’t be surprised if it is. Who likes the idea of optional improved lenses, instead of a bulky phone like the Galaxy S4 Zoom?

Google Play Store blows past 50 billion app downloads milestone
Jul 19th 2013, 16:49, by Cory Gunther

Back at Google’s I/O developer event in May the company announced how well their Play Store had been doing. Claiming roughly 48 billion apps downloaded, and over 900 million Android devices in the wild. Pretty impressive feat. This week we’ve learned things are still on target for unprecedented growth as Google‘s Larry Page confirmed even more numbers during their quarterly earnings call.

Just like iOS, who recently celebrated the 50 billion apps downloaded milestone, Google’s Android is enjoying the same fame this week. Even though iOS had a strong head start Android’s growth isn’t slowing down anytime soon and this is just one more example of that.

Yesterday during the earnings report Larry Page confirmed there’s now nearly 1.5 million Android devices that are powered up and activated each and every single day. So that doesn’t even count the ones without Google’s official support. Like all those Chinese knockoff’s and such.

In just a few months time Google’s added another 2 billion to their numbers and this week they announced the Google Play Store has officially served over 50 billion app downloads. Not only that, but the Play Store is seeing roughly 500m more downloads a month than iOS, as of late. We have a feeling we’ll be getting to 60 billion and beyond a lot quicker than the Apple.

Page ended by saying the first half of this year they’ve paid out more to developers than 2012 as a whole, so keep on creating amazing apps guys!
