There was a time when just about every handset released seemed to be a 'carrier exclusive' in the United States. Luckily this is starting to change.

The Moto X is said to arrive on all major carriers, the HTC One is slowly making its way to Verizon and already exists on several other U.S. networks, and the same goes for just about every major Samsung device. If analyst Mark C. Newman is correct, LG will be following suite with a similar cross-carrier plan.

It already seemed likely at least AT&T and Sprint would receive the LG G2,  but LG has also supposedly secured Verizon and T-Mobile as launch partners, allowing it to launch on all four major networks around the same time.

What about the rest of the globe? Newman claims that the G2 will find itself on considerably more networks around the world than previous LG flagships, as LG hopes to sneak its way past Apple for second place in the global smartphone market.

Unfortunately for LG, this will be no easy feat, thanks to increasing competition in the mobile world.

According to Strategy Analytics data from the second quarter of this year, LG is currently hovering around 5 percent, with Apple controlling 13.6 percent and Samsung leading with an impressive 33.1 percent of the market. Let's also not forget that ZTE and Huawei are nipping at LG's heels, with both controlling close to 5 percent of the market as well.

Will the upcoming LG G2 be enough to catapult LG's marketshare forward into 'second place' territory?
