First Motorola ad for Moto X surfaces

Posted: 02 Jul 2013 12:44 PM PDT

The first ad for Motorola’s forthcoming Moto X handset has leaked online and it appears to be heavy on two themes: “designed by you” and “Made in America”. The ad, spotted by Ad Age tells us that while we’re going to be spending the 4th of July celebrating the fact that we can do what we want and be who we wanna be, Motorola is working to deliver that same principle to smartphones.

“What we are doing which is very different is assembling here in the U.S. in our assembly plant in Ft. Worth, Texas… What better time than July 4th to come with a message like that? Smartphones are very different than other tech products a consumer owns…They’re closer to shoes or a watch. You carry it with you everywhere you go. Everyone sees what phone you’re carrying and they judge you on it. Yet, it’s the one thing you carry that’s the least customizable.” - Motorola’s VP-global brand and product marketing Brian Wallace said in an interview. “

We’re getting closer and closer to the launch of a reborn Motorola and anxiously await a post-Google acquisition message and brand.

Look for this full-page ad to run in newspapers around the country on July 3, 2013, including the The New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.

DigiTimes: HTC One Mini and Galaxy S4 to be launched in Q3

Posted: 02 Jul 2013 12:21 PM PDT

Last month, we saw the HTC One Mini alongside the HTC One, and the smartphone looked like a treat for people looking forward to mid-range devices. Also, Samsung came out with the Galaxy S4 Mini, which is a cheap alternative of the Galaxy S4. Samsung didn’t make it official when they are planning to launch it, and HTC One Mini is still in the pipeline. DigiTimes is now reporting that both HTC and Samsung will launch their entry-level smartphones in Q3. Although, it’s still 50/50 so we are not going to bet any money on it.

Mini versions previously launched by international smartphone vendors were significantly inferior to corresponding flagship models in hardware specification and intended to cater to entry-level and mid-range market segments, the sources indicated. However, the Galaxy S4 mini and HTC One mini are only slightly less competitive with Galaxy S4 and HTC One respectively in screen, processor and camera specifications and have the same industrial design and software functions, the sources pointed out. The two mini versions will be positioned as mid-range to high-end smartphones, the sources noted.

Well, lets take the rumor with a grain of salt and wait for both Samsung and HTC to let the cat out of the bag. Anyway, what are your thoughts about the mid-range versions? Would you prefer a HTC One Mini or a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

International version of HTC One receives Android 4.2.2

Posted: 02 Jul 2013 11:58 AM PDT

Back in May, we told you that HTC One will receive Android 4.2.2 update very soon. HTC One is one of the best rated Android phones right now, and Bloomberg even said that the Galaxy S4 is over-hyped and under-performing, where as the HTC One is the start of the art in Android. The only thing that was missing from the HTC One was Android 4.2.2, and now it is finally here as well.

htc-one-otaThe update is now rolling for the international version of the HTC One. Users in Taiwan were the first one to see the update, reported Android Central. A lot of new things are included in the update like a new lock screen style and widget, an enhanced launcher bar, quick settings, and a battery percentage in the notification bar.

No words on when the carrier version of the HTC One will receive the update, but we hope to see it sooner or later. Do you have an international version of the HTC One running on Android 4.2.2? If yes then tell us about it in the comment box below.

HTC says “no further updates” for HTC One S

Posted: 02 Jul 2013 11:12 AM PDT

htc_one_2_720

Sad news for those of you who own an HTC One S. HTC doesn’t plan to issue any more software updates to your smartphone. A statement from the handset maker says that the phone will be stuck with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

"We can confirm that the HTC One S will not receive further Android OS updates and will remain on the current version of Android and HTC Sense.  We realize this news will be met with disappointment by some, but our customers should feel confident that we have designed the HTC One S to be optimized with our amazing camera and audio experiences." – HTC

It’s not exactly the worst news in the world; Jelly Bean is better than having Ice Cream Sandwich…or Gingerbread. You know, you could always root and ROM your way to new features, too.

Unannounced Snapdragon 800-powered device found on benchmark test

Posted: 02 Jul 2013 08:59 AM PDT

According to our friends at GSM Insider, it looks as though another Snapdragon 800 device could be joining the ranks. A recent AnTuTu Benchmark test showed the unannounced LG-F320, and it has us scratching our heads as to what  it could be.

LG-F320

The device was tested in the home country of LG (South Korea,) and is powered by a 2.3GHz processor. From the information given by the benchmark, the processor is likely to be Snapdragon 800, but more info isn’t yet available leaving us to guess and just become more confused.

If you look at the model number of LG-F320, you could speculate that it is the rumored Nexus 5 from LG. However, since it was announced by LG Mobile’s VP that they were weren’t working on the Nexus 5 a few months back, one could say that it may be the Korean version of the LG Optimus G2. With no definitive proof, it truly is anyone’s guess.

AT&T keeps foot on the gas, announces 35 more LTE markets

It seems almost like clockwork these last few weeks that AT&T will announce a handful of new markets seeing 4G LTE speeds. One week it might be a dozen new areas, the next with another 18 or so. This week, AT&T is announcing faster data speeds in 36 new markets. On top of that, AT&T is enhancing coverage in cities such as Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Atlanta.

New markets seeing AT&T 4G LTE:

Pine Bluff, Ark.; Searcy, Ark.; Chico-Oroville, Calif.; Grand Junction, Col.; Silverthorne, Col.; Homosassa Springs, Fla.; Palatka, Fla.; Milledgeville, Ga.; Valdosta, Ga.; Lafayette, La.; Morgan City, La.; New Iberia, La.; Cape Cod, Mass.; New Ulm, Minn.; Corinth-New Albany, Miss.; Greenwood-Cleveland, Miss.; Grenada, Miss.; Meridian, Miss.; Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Atlantic City-Toms River, N.J.; Batavia, N.Y.; Dunn, N.C.; Lawton, Okla.; Dillon, S.C.; Midland, Texas; Odessa, Texas; Sherman-Denison, Texas; Victoria, Texas; St. Croix, US Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; Bremerton, Wash.; Moses Lake, Wash.;Yakima, Wash.; Beckley, W.V.; and Oak Hill, W.V.

AT&T is moving so fast on its 4G LTE deployment that it has raised its forecast and year-end goal from 250 million to 270 million people covered. With these new cities, AT&T now covers 326 markets across the United States. Verizon, by contrast, recently wrapped up number 500; Sprint is officially over 100 and T-Mobile is pushing for 100 million people by the middle of the year (now?).

Droid Ultra listing found on Motorola website

Posted: 02 Jul 2013 06:40 AM PDT

droid_ultra

Well this is a little odd… A page dedicated to a Motorola Droid Ultra has been spotted on Motorola’s website; however, it appears as only a temporary placeholder for now.

DROID ULTRA

THINK THIN

Available in a bunch of glossy colors, this high-grade DuPont™ Kevlar body proves you can be even thinner and still be tough as steel.

A listing for the device, void of any photos (naturally) shows the yet-announced handset as having identical hardware specifications as the Droid Razr M. The most likely scenario is that Motorola is not ready to share all of the details and the page should not have gone live yet. With that said, we’re certainly interested in the “bunch of glossy colors”.

Motorola is expected to be in a period of radio silence where they should return with a vengeance on August 1. Considering the timing lines up with earlier Motorola reports we might see the company reemerge with a new brand and product or two.
