Samsung UK teases "something new and groundbreaking" on Facebook
Aug 30th 2013, 21:44, by Cory Gunther

Samsung‘s annual Unpacked event is just days away, where the company and their CEO will take the stage to announce what’s next from the company. We already know what to expect though. That being the Galaxy Note III and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Well, today they’re teasing “something new and groundbreaking” on Facebook, which we can only assume is the Galaxy Gear.

There’s nothing new about the Galaxy Note III. Even though it will have an impressive 5.68-inch display, quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 13 megapixel camera. What’s more exciting, is the wearable Android device that will be strapped to your wrist. Samsung’s first smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear.

We’ve seen countless leaks confirming September 4th in Berlin, Germany, will be when Samsung shows it off. One of their execs even confirmed the device earlier this week. While we don’t know the exact details yet, Samsung is promising that this will be “groundbreaking”. Some recently leaked specs show a decent device, but sadly they also claim only 10 hours of battery life. If the device does everything rumors have claimed, it will still be pretty impressive.

Talk of a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and even a 4 megapixel camera and built in speakers all inside a smartwatch. It is reportedly going to do it all. Be a smartphone companion, track calories and heart rate like other watches, compete with the Nike FuelBand and more. Samsung has big hopes for this device, and we can’t wait to see it. Oh, and their Facebook page is even giving away one on launch day. Whatever that groundbreaking device may be.

We’ll be live in Berlin for all the details from Samsung, and hopefully all the hype doesn’t instantly make the Galaxy Gear seem not as exciting. We’ll have to wait and see.

CyanogenMod 10.2 arrives for the Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire
Aug 30th 2013, 20:57, by Robert Nelson

Custom third-party ROMs provide a good way to keep older hardware running current versions of Android. And in this case the aging hardware we are talking about is the Nook Tablet and the original Kindle Fire. These were both originally released with a customized version of Android 2.3, however thanks to CyanogenMod they can be running Android 4.3.

In both cases the ROM you would need to look for is CyanogenMod 10.2. Builds for both of these tablets can be found by way of the xda-developers forums (Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire) and both can be paired up with an Android 4.3 build of Gapps, which is what you will need to get all the Google apps such as the Play Store.

Similar to installing CyanogenMod on any other tablet or smartphone, there is a bit of work to do in order to get up and running. This process isn’t necessarily hard to do, but it should be done with caution as things can go wrong if you make some mistakes. While the process will vary from device to device, the basics is that you will need to root the tablet, install a custom recovery and then flash the ROM (followed by Gapps).

Of course, those who have already rooted their tablet and installed a custom recovery will have it a bit easier. Looking back and we have seen other CyanogenMod builds for these two tablets. For example, a build of CM10.1 (Android 4.2) came available for the Nook Tablet back in December of last year. The upgrade from CM10.1 to 10.2 may not be as big, but those going from the stock setup to CM10.2 will see more than a handful of changes.

That all being said, aside from the warning about making sure you proceed with caution in terms of updating these devices — it should also be said that CM10.2 is still under development and these builds are both based off the nightlies. Or in other words, those updating to CM10.2 may experience some bugs or other issues.
