Oppo teases new smartphone camera lens plugin
Aug 30th 2013, 02:37, by Juan Carlos Torres

The smartphone battle seems to have shifted to photography, with manufacturers trying to outdo each other in sheer megapixels or better picture quality. With a new camera smartphone on the way, Oppo is definitely not taking a back seat, giving everyone a sneak peak at its new camera lens.

The popular electronics maker is expected to announce a camera-oriented smartphone in just a few days. The rumomred Oppo N1 is believed to be sporting a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, 2 GB of RAM, and a 5.0-inch 1080p display. The company also confirmed that the device will feature a full touch panel on the back. But what camera smartphone would be complete without a decent camera? And so the N1 has either 12 or 16 megapixel camera with Xenon flash that utilizes the company’s “Owl” technology for low-light photography.

It seems that Oppo has been busy with other things as well and is now giving a glimpse of what that is. This camera lens plugin has a Sony CMOS sensor and optical image stabilization. The 16 megapixel plugin comes in two variants: a thinner version with 10x optical zoom, and a thicker one with a larger 15x zoom. The device also includes support for WiF and NFC as well as SD card storage.

Pricing and availability details have not been given but the company might be giving out more information when it launches the Oppo N1 next month.

T-Mobile Moto X leaked screenshot shows availability from Google Play only
Aug 30th 2013, 02:05, by Juan Carlos Torres

With the Motorola Moto X starting to become available on other major US carriers, T-Mobile customers are probably itching for some news or even rumors. Unfortunately, not every leaked information brings good tidings, as this screenshot seems to show.

A source provided a screenshot of T-Mobile’s page set up for the Moto X. Indicated here is the fact that the Moto X is “Available Externally” and sold by Google, through Google Play only. On one hand, this matches an earlier statement made by the carrier that they are not planning to stock on Moto X devices immediately. However, it was also indicated that T-Mobile customers should be looking towards Motorola when trying to purchase the Moto X. Now it seems that buyers will be redirected to Google Play instead.

On the other hand, this is sending conflicting signals to T-Mobile customers. On the same date that the image was leaked, T-Mobile CEO John Legere took to Twitter to poke fun at rival AT&T. In the same breath, he implied that T-Mobile customers will be able to jump to a Moto X next month, a reference to the carrier’s recently launched JUMP offering. Of course, Legere didn’t say this explicitly so his statements might be open to different interpretations.

It isn’t clear whether this Google Play exclusive applies only to off-contract units or for all T-Mobile offerings, which could contradict Legere’s statements. Whether leaked information or implied statements and hashtags hold more weight, T-Mobile users who are eager to get their hands on a Moto X will probably have no choice but to wait for the real deal.

Aio Wireless going nationwide in September
Aug 30th 2013, 01:22, by Juan Carlos Torres

Aio Wireless has just announced that will be rolling out their service throughout the US starting next month. Aio Wireless, which provides no-contract prepaid plans, is so far only available in selected markets in Tampa, Houston, and Orlando.

Launched just last May, Aio offers cheaper options for users who do not want to be tied to contracts. Aio offers three tiers starting with the voice-only Aio Basic plan that is only available for feature phones. Both the Aio Smart and the Aio Pro plans come with talk, messaging, and data, with a difference only in the amount of data. Prices range from $35 to $70 a month but may vary depending on the market. A month later, Aio added 4G LTE service to its data plans.

Aio Wireless will soon be expanding to other markets and states nationwide next month. No exact date has given but the carrier is offering the third month of service free of charge for those who will be signing up and activating their service by September 29. Those who wish to avail of the promo, however, must set up auto-pay and will still have to pay for additional features on top of the plan they signed up for.

This announcement comes right on the heels of T-Mobile filing a trademark lawsuit against AT&T. Aio Wireless is a subsidiary of AT&T so it comes as no surprise that T-Mobile would target its rival instead. And the content of T-Mobile’s beef? Just the simple fact that Aio Wireless’ branding makes use of the purple or magenta color that is “strikingly similar” to T-Mobile’s own branding. The carrier unveiled its own budget “UNcarrier” plans last March.
