Since hiring Android’s Hugo Barra yesterday, Xiaomi’s co-founder, Bin Lin, has offered a little bit of insight into how he’ll fit into the company, as well as their philosophy on selling phones. According to a phone interview with AllThingsD, Lin says Barra will help the company branch out their business globally. Xiaomi currently does extremely well in China and decently in Hong Kong and Taiwan, it’s not a powerhouse outside of that area of the world. Hugo Barra, thanks to his experiences making Android a global phenomenon, knows what features and devices are more likely to do well in other markets. Lin expects the company to start shipping phones to other countries by the beginning of next year at the latest under Barra’s expertise.

Bin Lin also talked about the fact that Xiaomi’s Mi-2 phone is right behind the Galaxy S 4 and HTC One in sales on one of Taiwan’s major phone carriers, which he said helps the company maintain some pretty strong momentum. He uses their latest low-end device as an example; the device, named “Red Rice,” sells for about $130 off-contract, and as soon as it was offered online, Xiaomi sold 100,000 units in 90 seconds. For an Android OEM that’s localized to just three or four markets, that’s an impressive number. Maybe we’ll see another major player step into the Android market in the US by the end of next year.
