Full HD who? 2560 x 1440 Quad HD LCDs for smartphones announced by LG Display

LG Quad HD Display

LG Display has announced a monster of a smartphone display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a pixel per inch (PPI) density of 538 on a 5.5-inch panel – a world’s first – which we could see in the future on Android devices.

In addition to offering Quad HD resolution – or four times more pixels than an 1280 x 720 HD panel of the same size – this new AH-IPS LCD display is also "the world's slimmest and narrowest panel" beating the company's 5.2-inch display that was just recently announced (and which is found on the LG G2).

According to the press release, the Quad HD display is 1.21mm thin and has a 1.2mm bezel.

Furthermore, the display also offers a brightness of 430nit, made possible by the Low Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) substrate.

The company did not reveal what upcoming smartphones will use such a display, but did say that research firm DisplaySearch expects LTPS-based smartphone display shipments to reach 765 million next year, "as displays with larger screens, higher resolution, and less power consumption prove key to competitiveness in the premium model segment."

LG certainly appears ready for the next phase of the display battle when it comes to mobile devices. But is it really worth moving above Full HD displays in smartphones?
