HTC One Max release date tipped for October 15th
Sep 27th 2013, 16:53, by Cory Gunther

The HTC One Max phablet has surfaced yet again this morning in another round of images as it passes through China’s version of the FCC. At this point we’ve seen plenty of it and just want to know when HTC plans to unveil the smartphone. Yesterday we heard an October 17th release date, but other sources have something a bit sooner on the calendar.

At this point all of the rumors, both good and bad, have continued to flood in without any concrete information. We know nearly everything about the device already, and now it sounds like they’ll announce it mid October and try to stir up the Galaxy Note 3 launch, even if they are a few weeks late.

Today another source is reportedly confirming October 15th will be the official announcement date, which means we probably won’t see it available on store shelves til end of October, or early November. We’ve heard reports of aluminum casing delays for the HTC One mini, which could also have caused this launch to be delayed, and now this morning HTC and Beats Audio are parting ways. So maybe they need to remove that from their handset. We’re not fully sure what the holdup is from HTC’s end.

That aside, this beautiful and aluminum 5.9-inch smartphone with front facing speakers and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean surely will be impressive. If they ever get it on the market and in our hands, of course. Reports of a Snapdragon 800 quad-core have been tossed around, but we’ve also seen a Snapdragon 600 and rumors of something even older like the S4 Pro. We’ll confirm all the details once HTC gets around to making an official announcement.

LG talks optical image stabilization in latest G2 video
Sep 27th 2013, 16:00, by Robert Nelson

LG has posted the latest promo video for the G2 smartphone and this time around the talk deals with the camera. Specifically, dealing with one feature that makes the LG G2 camera stand apart from other Android handsets. That feature is optical image stabilization (OIS) and LG has opted to show how this works using a chicken.

First things first though, LG has a 13 megapixel camera on the back of the G2 and as we noted in our earlier review, taking pictures from a moving car, while walking or with shaky hands was nothing to worry about. Anyway, LG has dropped this 2 minute plus video titled “Steady Feathers” and is using the chicken to show how optical image stabilization works.

Perhaps the key though, this essentially means the software will be able to make up for your shaky hands. And as we shown in that review, it can also make up for the shakiness that would be associated with taking pictures from a moving car. Anyway, those choosing to skip the video, just so you know what you will be missing — a chicken wearing a football helmet with a camera doing some crazy stunts.

Aside from the optical image stabilization, the LG G2 camera is also able to capture 1080p video at 60 frames per second. We have a sample video coming from the G2 tucked in just below.

Other points about the LG G2 camera include a lens that is protected by a finger print coating and sapphire glass as well as a 4x digital zoom, 9-point auto-focus system and auto scene prediction. Those buttons on the back also double as a shortcut to the camera.

All of this being said, the LG G2 is a solid device and those still considering a purchase may benefit from some of our earlier coverage which included a full hands-on review and well as an everything you need to know style post. Not to mention, we did a battle of the buttons post to show the differences between the Verizon and AT&T models.

LG Spectrum 2 software update rolling out from Verizon Wireless
Sep 27th 2013, 15:15, by Robert Nelson

Verizon Wireless has posted the details for the latest LG Spectrum 2 software update. This update is arriving as software version VS93022A and while there is a decent sized changelog — the changes may not be as exciting as some users were hoping to see. Simply put, there is an update rolling out at the moment, but it deals mostly with apps.

With that in mind, the changelog seems to follow the usual patterns in terms of a description for this update. Basically, that is to say Verizon notes this update as being one that has been “designed to improve the performance” of your handset. They then go on to list the changes as being “key device enhancements” but again, most of the list includes talk of apps for everything from the My Verizon Mobile to VZ Navigator and even to some third party apps including Real Racing 2.

Aside from one exception, the changelog includes the following items;

  • Google GMS has been upgraded to R5 version
  • Single Sign On (SSO) engine has been updated to 3.1.14
  • My Verizon Mobile has been updated to v10.0.0440
  • VZ Navigator has been updated to v9.0.123
  • Real Racing 2 has been updated to v.000770
  • Verizon Daily Scoop v5.0.8. has been added
  • Verizon Remote Diagnostics (VRD) has been removed
  • Backup Assistant Plus contacts have been enhanced
  • Data Usage Notification' feature is now supported
  • Volume can now be changed while using Visual Voice Mail
  • Access and function Visual Voice Mail even when unsubscribed
  • Use Visual Voice Mail without having to enter a PIN request
  • Contact Backup no longer gets interrupted when making voice calls

That one exception was buried in the middle of the list and while it may not be the most exciting portion — it may be one of the more beneficial and important items. Verizon has said this update includes the latest Google security patches. Specifically, they have noted the following; Google security patches have been performed.

Those carrying an LG Spectrum 2 now have two options in front of them. You can sit back and wait for an update notification to arrive on your handset or take the pro-active approach and look for it now. Those choosing the latter option should grab their phone and navigate to Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> Software updates -> Check for Updates to try and get the process started.
