AT&T reports $17.5 billion in profits, close to a million new subscribers
Oct 23rd 2013, 21:50, by Nate Swanner

A week after Verizon posted their impressive earnings results, AT&T has followed suit. The nation's number two carrier sits firmly in second place, both in regard to subscribers and revenue. They've reported gains in just about every category, and are up year-over-year from 2012.

AT&T reports a $17.5 billion profit, and $15.5 billion in mobile revenue. A robust $5.5 billion comes from wireless data revenue, and 989,000 new subscribers (net) added in Q3 alone. Their churn — how many customers left — was nearly stagnant, with a mere 1.07% for postpaid customers, and 1.31% including prepaid.

With the addition of nearly a million new subscribers, and 1.21 million if you don't appreciate for churn, AT&T now says they have a full 75% of their postpaid subscriber base on smartphones. That's up from 66% this time last year. Nearly three-quarters — 72% — of those postpaid customers are on a shared or tiered data plan, signalling the death of unlimited mobile for AT&T subscribers.

A respectible chunk of the nearly one million new customers were prepaid, with AT&T saying they added 192,000 prepaid customers in the quarter. AT&T also noted they had 719,000 net device activations in the quarter, but resellers lost 285,000 subscribers. AT&T attributes that loss to "losses in low-revenue 2G subscriber accounts."

Samsung Galaxy S4 has sold 40 million units since launch, says CEO
Oct 23rd 2013, 21:00, by Nate Swanner

The Samsung Galaxy S4 launched to high acclaim, but reports of slow sales have dogged the handset since. While new of initial sales reaching 10 million in one month were impressive, the ever-so-suspect "insiders" note that shipments since then have slumped. One report said Samsung was accelerating their Galaxy S5 efforts in response to those slow sales.

Officially, Samsung has sold 40 million Galaxy S4 units. According to Samsung CEO J.K. Shin, Samsung reached 30 million devices shipped four months after launch, and recently topped the 40 million mark. If it's true that total Android activation number has now topped one billion, the S4 has about 4% of the total Android market share.

The news, which is from a Korean site and subject to Google translation for us, also notes that Samsung is dedicating themselves to fixing the issue that causes batteries to swell or explode. The translated text notes that Shin was not clear on the cause of the issue, and said the batteries were made by a Chinese company, not Samsung.

This seems to echo a report recently regarding the overall sales of smartphones, which had the Galaxy S4 sitting firmly at the top of the heap. With 40 million devices sold, Samsung definitely has a hit on their hand, as usual. Having been launched in April, it's reasonable to think that Samsung could sell 100 million devices by the time their annual refresh cycle comes again.
