New Samsung Galaxy S4 Active to sport LTE-A, headed to SKT
Oct 7th 2013, 04:24, by Juan Carlos Torres

We’ve already heard rumors of Samsung preparing an updated version of its Galaxy S4 Active smartphone early last month. This time we’re getting some somewhat official details of what the device will be fitted with as it makes its way towards an official release in Korea and Japan.

When Samsung announced the its Galaxy S 4 flagship, it tried to capitalize on that brand by also unveiling variations of the smartphone revolving around specific themes. The Galaxy S4 Active is the tough and rugged sibling of the premium smartphone, boasting of a dust-proof and waterproof IP67 rating. You can read up more about Samsung’s sporty spin in our review of the Galaxy S4 Active here. Like the Galaxy S 4, it also sported a quad-core 1.9 GHz processor, which isn’t quite the fad these days anymore.

It seems that Samsung is planning to correct that with a new Galaxy S4 Active that instead runs on a quad-core 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, bringing it up to speed with current smartphones. Otherwise, the refresh will retain all other aspects of the first generation, including the IP67 rating. Now it seems that the new Galaxy S4 Active will be gaining a new feature as well, in the form of LTE-Advanced or LTE-A support.

As LTE-A networks are still few and far between, it seems only fitting that the LTE-A capable Galaxy S4 Active would be first made available in the place where the network was born. As such the new Samsung Galaxy S4 Active will be coming to Japan via SK Telecom, which pioneered the technology in the country.

Lenovo IdeaPad B6000-F, B8000-F Android Yoga tablets surface in Europe
Oct 7th 2013, 03:56, by Juan Carlos Torres

While the company has released Android smartphones, Lenovo hasn’t truly been big in the Android tablet scene, with most of it’s large-sized devices leaning towards Windows. But now it seems that Lenovo will be dipping its toes further with two new Android tablets from the manufacturer’s unique bending Yoga hybrid line.

The Lenovo IdeaPad B6000-F is the smaller of the two, with an 8-inch WXGA 1280×800 display. The B8000-F, on the other hand, sports a larger 10-inch display but with the same pixel resolution, giving it a lower pixel density. Both tablets, surprisingly, run on a 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT8125 processor with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. Both also have 5 megapixel rear cameras. The smaller B6000-F is powered by a 6000 mAh battery while the B8000-F has a 6000 mAh, giving the tablets and advertised battery life of 16 and 18 hours, respectively.

The two tablets, however, are a strange pair from Lenovo’s distinct folding tablet/laptop hybrid form factor. The tablets do not have a built-in keyboard. Instead, all the Yoga bending happens on a built-in rotating stand that can be set to various angles. We’ve yet to see an actual announcement for Lenovo but, if this is for real, the devices will be quite interesting as they will be one of the few Lenovo devices that do not run on an Intel chip, adding some fodder to recent talk about Lenovo switching to Qualcomm, or in this case, MediaTek, for its mobile processing needs. However, the company has used NVIDIA Tegras for its previous Android tablets, so this is also a curious switch.

The Lenovo IdeaPad B6000-F and B8000-F Yoga tablets have so far only been sighted in online retail stores in Germany and Italy. The B6000-F carries a price tag of 215-242 euros, around $290-$330, while the larger B8000-F is priced as 280-313 euros, roughly $380-$425.

BLU Studio 5.5 unveiled, a colorful no-contract phablet alternative
Oct 7th 2013, 03:11, by Juan Carlos Torres

BLU Products might not be at the top of the list when it comes to Android smartphone manufacturers but there is no denying that they offer affordable and sometimes interesting options. One such offering is the new BLU Studio 5.5 which may or may not be the budget phablet that you are looking for.

As if having a giant-sized smartphone isn’t eye-catching enough, BLU wants your next device to shout your uniqueness with five color options which includes bright shades of yellow, pink, and cyan, along with the usual white and black. These smartphones are, of course, Google Play certified, so you get access to the usual variety of apps, games, books, music, and video, of course depending on market availability.

Things go a slightly different turn here, depending on your preferences. The Studio 5.5, as the name implies, sports a generous 5.5-inch display. However, do not plan on watching your high quality videos just yet as the screen only supports a 480×854 resolution. It runs on a 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, the chip of choice for budget devices. It only has 4 GB of internal storage but is expandable with a microSD card. The 5 megapixel rear camera is capable of shooting 1080p videos. At least it is running Andoroid 4.2 Jelly Bean, so you wouldn’t be far behind the latest, at least for another half-month or so.

If the specs don’t seem like something to die for, the price point might be. The BLU Studio 5.5 phablet will be available from retailers such as Amazon without any contract for an enticing price of $179.
