Sony might not be upping its game in the United States anytime soon, but that's not stopping the Japanese giant from continuing with its regular strategy of releasing many of its mobile devices directly for sales in the states through its website and via select retail partners.
With that in mind, today Sony announced that the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Sony SmartWatch 2 are now available in United States.
Sony Xperia Z1
The Sony Xperia Z1 picks up where the original Xperia Z left off, delivering a beautiful smartphone experience that also happens to be water and dust resistant. This time around, Sony is also focusing quite a bit on the device’s image-taking capabilities, bringing a high-end 20.7MP camera to the party.
Other specs include a 2.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, microSD, a 2MP front cam, NFC, and a 3000 mAh battery. There's also a 5-inch 1080p TFT display with 441ppi, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box.
The Xperia Z1 is a heck of a handset and can be yours for $699.99 – without LTE. If you are holding out for an LTE-compatible variant, odds are you'll want to turn your attention to the rumored T-Mobile version of the handset.
Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Arriving on the heels of the Galaxy Note 3, the Xperia Z Ultra arguably bests its large-screened rival in some ways by offering a massive 6.4-inch 1080p LCD display, a water/dust resistant design and the ability to use pencils and pens as an alternative to a typical stylus.
The Z Ultra is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, 2GB RAM, 8MP rear cam, 2MP front cam, 16GB storage, microSD, NFC, and a 3050 mAh battery. The handset runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra will set you back $649.99 for the 3G variant, or $679.99 for the LTE model.
Sony SmartWatch 2
The Gear competitor might not have all the shiny extras or as big of a display, but the SmartWatch 2 does feature a water resistant design, NFC technology, a much better battery life and is compatible with any Android 4.0+ device.
The Sony SmartWatch 2 has a more modest 180MHz processor and low-rez 220 x 176 pixel 1.6-inch TFT LCD, but it really isn’t a bad device if you are looking for more of a typical watch that just happens to also receive all sorts of notifications from your mobile device.

Sony mobile devices might not be well-known in the United States, but for those that prefer buying their devices outright and unlocked – you can't go wrong with Sony.
