Now that the Nexus 5 has landed, the season for big Android launches seems to be drawing to an end. Big manufacturers have already put out their best devices on the market, looking anxiously to the crucial holiday season ahead. But don't let the lull fool you: behind the scenes, big Android makers are hard at work preparing flagship devices for the first part of 2014.

We know, for instance, that HTC is working on the successor to the popular One, due in the first quarter of 2014. According to @evleaks, the device is codenamed internally M8 (the HTC One was M7) and will be the first device to run HTC's Sense 6 Android overlay.

Now we have the first alleged images showing components of the M8, revealing a design that is very similar to the current HTC One. There are some differences though: most visibly, the metal body wraps around the edges, instead of having straight sides with chamfered edges. This wraparound design evokes the older One X, though that was made of plastic instead of metal.

Another interesting feature is the small round hole above the camera on the back. The Chinese source of the images speculates it may be an opening for a fingerprint scanner, or, less likely, for a secondary camera lens.

On the inside, the new HTC One is said to feature a Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a Full HD display, though it's all just unsupported rumors so far.

How credible are these alleged shots of the M8/HTC One (2014)? Well, if HTC hopes to deliver its new flagship early in the year, it's not too early to see leaks like this. It's also plausible that the Taiwanese company is marching on with the industrial design of the One, which proved quite successful.

Then again, we might be looking at a prototype, a different device, or something else altogether. One thing's for sure: expect more HTC M8 leaks in the coming months.
