One Laptop per Child (OLPC) debuts child-friendly XO tablet Jul 16th 2013, 15:06, by Scott Webster The team behind the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) has teamed with Vivitar to introduce a 7-inch family-friendly XO Tablet. Set to arrive in early August, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet is loaded with games, videos, apps, and other educational tools aimed at children. “The XO Tablet is the first and only tablet designed specifically to help kids explore their dreams and spark their imaginations,” said Jeff Saka, president of Vivitar. “Not only does it combine active learning with fun, imaginative play, but parents can also feel confident in giving the durable and secure XO Tablet to children of any age—and they can even use it themselves.” The XO Tablet allows for up to three separate user accounts and works as a full-on Android/Google experience; mom and dad can use this for productivity. Designed as the first multlingual (English/Spanish) tablet with Google Certification, the tablet will cost $149.99 at Walmart stores around the country. In terms of hardware, the XO Tablet features a 7-inch 1024 x 600 display and a 1.64GHz dual-core processor. Battery life is listed at 8 hours per charge and we’ll assume the standard fare of Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth are on board. A render of the device found its way to ePrice who promptly passed it along for everyone else to see. Set to debut as soon as IFA 2013 in September, the Honami bears a striking resemblance to other Sony devices of late. AT&T intros yearly, hassle-free upgrades with "AT&T Next" Jul 16th 2013, 14:36, by Scott Webster AT&T announced on Tuesday that customers will soon be able to upgrade their smartphones as often as once per year, without any down payments, financing fees, activation fees, or upgrade fees. Called AT&T Next, it allows users to purchase a smartphone or tablet by paying for the device over monthly installments. Once 12 months of payments are reached, customers can choose to trade it in toward a new phone or keep paying another 8 months and keep the device. Neither option will require the subscriber to pay any fees. "With AT&T Next, customers can get the newest smartphone or tablet every year with no down payment. That's hard to beat, and it's an incredible value for customers who want the latest and greatest every year," said Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer of AT&T Mobility. It'll be a fancy paperweight. No matter how good the physical device is, if it has crappy software on it, nobody's going to care about it. Conversely, we've seen many times that excellent software can make up for crappy hardware. The device you hold, but by and large it's the software that you interact with. It's the operating system that loads the apps, that displays your information, that connects you to the wider digital frontier. The operating system is often one and inseparable with the brand. Software is where the real innovation happens. It's software that gives us multitasking interfaces, voice and gesture controls, notifications, and everything else. Software is what happens on our devices. The software is what defines the experience. But what's important in software? Good features or a lot of features? Does it matter if it's open or closed source? And is the app launcher due for a revolution? read more
