Galaxy Note 8 LTE getting Android 4.2.2 update Aug 5th 2013, 15:41, by Brad Ward It seems Samsung is trying to roll out Android 4.2 to some of its major devices these days. The Galaxy S2 Plus and Galaxy Note 8.0 (Wi-Fi) received the update, and now its LTE counterpart is getting the update. As per the norm, you may not be able to snag the update just yet, as this is a gradual rollout. At the time being, the update is available in the U.K., but more countries will be soon to follow. You can download the update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 LTE (GT-N5120) via Samsung’s Kies desktop software. Just make sure your device’s battery is fully charged, as this is a very large update. While Android 4.2 isn’t a very major update, it’s still an improvement, bringing with it cool things like Photo Sphere and Google Now improvements. HTC Mini+ now available for preorder in the UK Aug 5th 2013, 15:54, by Brad Ward Credit: Cnet Asia Earlier this year a small phone surfaced known as the HTC Mini, whose sole purpose is to connect to the HTC Butterfly, which is known as the DNA in the U.S. The HTC Mini surfaced again, only this time in the U.K. U.K. retailer Clove announced on its blog the coming availability of this device, only calling it the HTC Mini+. This tiny device seems to have some additional features as well. As you may have noticed, the HTC Mini+ is a very simple phone. It’s an NFC equipped device and resembles one of those cordless phones that would hang on the wall, before smartphones took over. The HTC Mini+ is basically an extension of the Butterfly, and unlike a cordless wall phone, it can make or receive phone calls and text messages, in addition to acting as a remote when connected to your TV, thanks to its infrared functionality and the HTC Media Link HD. For now, it seems that this device will only work with the Butterfly and DNA, however, it’d be awesome if it could be used as a universal phone extension, not just a select few HTC devices. Either way, we still don’t know when the Mini+ will be available, but Clove is already taking preorders, listing the device for £64.99GBP, including VAT, which adds up to around $100USD. We've all heard good things, and often enough that it was evident I needed to get one and have a look. I've used plenty of them, had some varying results, but I had never heard anything bad about the ZENS unit. At ShopAndroid.com, it has a solid five star rating after 26 reviews. I think I understand why, after using one for a few days. There's no secret, it's a Qi compatible coil housed in a casing that rests quietly on your desk or nightstand. As long as the Qi standard is followed faithfully (looking at you, first-run Nexus 4 and your weird issues in this area), setting a Qi compatible device on top of the coil should charge it. The Zens charger does just that, but someone put a little thought behind the rest of the unit. read more

Obtained by ePrice, the two images show exactly what you might expect – a larger HTC One. Rumors suggest the HTC One Max will feature a 5.9-inch display, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 3200mAh battery, and very current versions of Android and HTC Sense. Leaked pictures show off the upcoming HTC One Max Aug 5th 2013, 14:58, by Nick Gray The HTC One mini may be a great option for those who want a smaller phone with the fit and finish of the HTC One, but if you’re looking for more power and a device that can bridge the gap between phone and tablet – the upcoming HTC One Max should definitely be sitting at the top of your wish list. Thanks to ePrice, we now have two leaked images which claim to show off the HTC One Max. Like the HTC One, the One Max features an aluminum shell with front-facing stereo speakers, a large, wide-angle front-facing camera and two capacitive buttons nestled below the One Max’s 5.9-inch display. The design is certainly inspired by the HTC One, but HTC has equipped the One Max with white plastic trim along the edge of the phone, making it look nearly identical to the HTC One mini. The source of the images claims that the Chinese variant of the HTC One Max does feature a removable back panel which gives users access to microSD and two SIM card slots. The phone is also said to be heading to three different service providers in China, but there’s still no clear indication as to when the phone will go on sale. The day has arrived for that invite to Samsung Unpacked Episode 2, scheduled for September 4th during IFA. Since we call can’t make it across the pond to Berlin, Samsung is hosting a livestream of the event for everyone to enjoy, along with a live broadcast and hands-on demo of the new device in Times Square. We’re excited to see what comes of the event because we should see the Galaxy Note III and maybe even something else interesting. Samsung Apps to offer BBM for Android Aug 5th 2013, 14:55, by Alex Dobie Release confirmed for Africa on all Galaxy smartphones Samsung has announced that it'll offer the Android version of BlackBerry's BBM messaging app upon its release. A press release issued today confirmed that BBM will be "available to all Samsung GALAXY smartphone consumers across Africa" on Google Play as well as Samsung's own app store. And while today's presser refers to Africa specifically, it's likely Samsung owners in other territories (not to mention other Android device owners) will be able to download the app too. Samsung also states that BBM "will form part of Samsung Messaging Hub" on Galaxy devices, suggesting some kind of deeper integration with the built-in Messaging app may be on the cards. There's still no word on exactly when BBM for Android (or iOS) will appear, but it's understood to be in beta testing right now, so the public release probably isn't far off. Source: CrackBerry

Motorola's Dennis Woodside on the Moto X: 'We were thinking about the total user experience' Aug 5th 2013, 14:20, by Robert Nazarian Ever since the Moto X was announced, a lot of critics cried foul with the price, including yours truly. I’m fine with the specs, but I just didn’t think the price was warranted. However, in an interview with AllTHingsD, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside isn’t pleased that the press is calling it a mid-range phone with a high-end price. “We made some different choices from our competitors." We were thinking about the total user experience." Basically, they spent their investment developing always-on voice recognition and Active Display. As far as the screen resolution, he said, "Beyond 720p — unless you have a vision of a hawk — you aren't going to notice much of a difference."  For Motorola, it was about being able to operate the phone with one hand. They surveyed a bunch of people to find out what device size was the most comfortable. Once they settled on that, they set out to fit the largest display size they could into the chosen device size. Of course Motorola is going after the user experience, but isn’t Samsung, HTC, and LG? Motorola thinks they have the best features so therefore the cost is justified. Samsung has more features than anyone, but the Galaxy S 4 is priced the same with higher specs. Again, I am not saying that Samsung’s features are better or worse, just different. Motorola really doesn’t have to convince the critics or readers of sites like TalkAndroid. The bottomline is that the average consumer doesn’t read blogs like ours, nor do they buy based on specs (other than maybe screen size). It’s all going to come down to the marketing. If they can convince people that the Moto X’s features are awesome, then people are going to buy it.
